Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the anticipated third installment in Rian Johnson's wickedly delicious mystery series starring Daniel Craig, will have its world premiere at the film festival — a traditional launchpad for Academy Awards contenders. The sequel, whose starry cast also includes Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, and Kerry Washington, was one of 11 official selections unveiled Wednesday, all of which have Oscar aspirations.

The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival added several world premieres by prolific filmmakers including Netflix’s Rian Johnson threequel Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Sony Pictures Classics’ Nicholas Hytner title The Choral, Miramax/Paramount’s Derek Cianfrance caper The Roofman, Paul Greengrass’ AppleTV+ movie The Lost Bus, Searchlight’s The Rental Family from Beef episodic director Hikari as well as the Canadian premiere of Hament from Oscar winning Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao.

In total TIFF unveils today 11 more Official Selections in the Gala and Special Presentations programmes. The fest, presented by Rogers, runs from Sept. 4-14.

The Toronto International Film Festival celebrates its 50th year in 2025, and this year will play host to a number of exciting world premieres. For TIFF 50, the festival announced 11 new Galas and Special Presentations on Wednesday morning, including heavy hitters like “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” at the September festival.

TIFF 50 will also have Special Presentations for “Franz,” “The Lost Bus,” “Rental Family” and “Steal Away.” The six newly-announced Galas include “The Choral,” “Homebound,” “Hamnet,” “A Private Life,” “Roofman” and “She Has No Name.” Both the Special Presentations and the Galas are meant to platform high-profile premieres from notable creators with significant audience buzz.

“Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” the third murder mystery in director Rian Johnson’s hit series, will have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. That movie and several others, including Chloe Zhao’s Shakespearean drama “Hamnet” and Channing Tatum’s action comedy “Roofman,” have been added to the lineup.

Johnson’s two prior whodunnits in the trilogy, 2019’s “Knives Out” and 2022’s “Glass Onion,” also had their world premieres at TIFF. For years, there have been cries for a thorough, big-budget biopic centered on music's most famous quartet: The Beatles. Now, not only are we getting one, but we're getting four, with director Sam Mendes bringing the personal and professional lives of John, Paul, George, and Ringo to the big screen in a cinematic event truly like no other. As the director told a packed audience at the CinemaCon market event earlier this year, "We need big cinematic events to get people out of the house."

Currently, Harris Dickinson is set to appear as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and, finally, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, with the trio of Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Adolescence's Jack Thorne penning each script. However, it seems as if the trio have had help piecing together the story from one of the two remaining members of the Fab Four.

With theaters preparing for a British Invasion ahead of the upcoming Beatles cinematic event in 2028, Ringo Starr is making sure the movies get it right.

After flying to London in April to meet with director Sam Mendes, the Beatles drummer revealed he had issues with how his first marriage to Maureen Starkey Tigrett was depicted in the script for the upcoming four-part biopic about the legendary British rock band, which is penned by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan and Jack Thorne.

“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,” Starr explained to The New York Times. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.'”

Starr is now pleased with his depiction in the script, but he remains skeptical of how Mendes will shoot four films at a time.

According to a new interview with the New York Times, Starr and Mendes spent “two days” going over the script “line by line” and Starr “offered extensive notes” in order to make the film more accurate to his personal life and experiences.

“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen [his first wife] and I,” Starr told the publication. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.’”

However, after they went over revisions, Starr felt content with the script. “He’ll do what he’s doing,” he said, before adding, “and I’ll send him peace and love.”

There are four biopics on each Beatles member being made by Sony. Barry Keoghan is portraying Starr.
