Is ‘Fantastic Four’ a Marvel Reset or Another Step Backward? Screen Talk Reviews the Film and Previews Fall Festivals
Image
As the sweltering heat of summer movie season rages on, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (Disney/Marvel) is the latest addition to the multiplex pack. So far, we’ve seen “Superman,” “F1,” and “Jurassic World: Rebirth” make bank at the box office.

Meanwhile, Matt Shakman’s MCU needle-reset has grossed more than $24 million in previews. It’s looking at a potential $100-million-plus debut for the sci-fi comic book adaptation starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. Soon, they will join the next “Avengers” movie from the Russo Brothers, set for 2026.

As we discuss on this week’s episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, the movie isn’t horrible, but certainly doesn’t make a lasting impression in terms of its visuals and uninspiring narrative. Ryan has been depressed over the latest summer offerings that offer no psychological challenge, though he and Anne appreciate the smart casting that went into this movie,...

‘The History of Sound’ Trailer: Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Fall in Love Over Folk Music
Image
Two of the indie film world’s favorite young actors will share the screen this fall in what many are already clocking as an award season contender to watch.

Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound” made waves at Cannes for its sensitive portrayal of a love affair between Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. The film was acquired by Mubi, which will roll the film out theatrically in September as the Oscar race begins to take shape.

The film begins in 1917, where budding, preternaturally gifted musician Lionel (Mescal) first meets David (O’Connor) at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over their shared love of folk music. They reconnect years later when David asks Lionel to join him on an impromptu journey through New England to collect traditional folk songs. That journey paves the way for a romance — set against the music they’re preserving — that will change the course of Lionel’s life.

This Beatles Legend, 85, Admits the Script Changes He Made to the Upcoming Sam Mendes-Helmed Band Biopic
Image
For years, there have been cries for a thorough, big-budget biopic centered on music's most famous quartet: The Beatles. Now, not only are we getting one, but we're getting four, with director Sam Mendes bringing the personal and professional lives of John, Paul, George, and Ringo to the big screen in a cinematic event truly like no other. As the director told a packed audience at the CinemaCon market event earlier this year, "We need big cinematic events to get people out of the house."

Currently, Harris Dickinson is set to appear as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and, finally, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, with the trio of Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Adolescence's Jack Thorne penning each script. However, it seems as if the trio have had help piecing together the story from one of the two remaining members of the Fab Four.

Ringo Starr Explains Script Changes He Requested For Sam Mendes’ Beatles Biopic
Image
With theaters preparing for a British Invasion ahead of the upcoming Beatles cinematic event in 2028, Ringo Starr is making sure the movies get it right.

After flying to London in April to meet with director Sam Mendes, the Beatles drummer revealed he had issues with how his first marriage to Maureen Starkey Tigrett was depicted in the script for the upcoming four-part biopic about the legendary British rock band, which is penned by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan and Jack Thorne.

“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,” Starr explained to The New York Times. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.'”

Starr is now pleased with his depiction in the script, but he remains skeptical of how Mendes will shoot four films at a time.

Ringo Starr Gave Director Sam Mendes Many Notes for Beatles Biopic
Image
The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr recalls sharing some notes with Sam Mendes for his biopic on the musician.

According to a new interview with the New York Times, Starr and Mendes spent “two days” going over the script “line by line” and Starr “offered extensive notes” in order to make the film more accurate to his personal life and experiences.

“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen [his first wife] and I,” Starr told the publication. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.’”

However, after they went over revisions, Starr felt content with the script. “He’ll do what he’s doing,” he said, before adding, “and I’ll send him peace and love.”

There are four biopics on each Beatles member being made by Sony. Barry Keoghan is portraying Starr.

He is also set to be joined by Paul Mescal (Paul McCartney), Harris Dickinson (John Lennon), and Joseph Quinn (George Harrison).

Speaking with the New York Times, the real-life Starr revealed that he previously sat down with Mendes to go over the four films’ scripts. Highlighting that while the director had employed an excellent screenwriter, the original...

Denzel Washington has starred in many hit films throughout his decades-long Hollywood career, but his latest big-screen entry is surprisingly his biggest box-office smash. The star-studded historical epic Gladiator II has become a huge hit Paramount+ -- and that's not the first time it's enjoyed streaming success.

Per FlixPatrol, Gladiator II is the top-ranked film on Paramount+'s global Top 10 films chart, outdoing the Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick for the No. 1 spot. It's the second time since Gladiator II's release that it topped the streaming charts, having taken over Prime Video's Top 10 movies chart immediately in April 2025.

Gladiator II was the follow-up to Ridley Scott's 2000 film Gladiator, which won five Academy Awards -- including Best Picture and Best Actor for leading man Russell Crowe. Washington previously worked with Scott on the acclaimed 2007 crime drama American Gangster, in which he played notorious crime boss Frank Lucas. The...
