Jesse Eisenberg Wraps Third Directorial Film with Julianne Moore in Untitled Musical Comedy
Jesse Eisenberg
Aleksandro A24 wrapped principal photography this month on Jesse Eisenberg’s untitled musical comedy, marking a rapid turnaround since cameras rolled in April at various community theatre venues and studio stages. The film, which reunites Eisenberg with producers Emma Stone’s Fruit Tree banner and A24, stars Julianne Moore as a withdrawn woman suddenly thrust into a local musical production by Paul Giamatti’s charismatic director.

Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu and Bernadette Peters join an ensemble that also features Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper and Maulik Pancholy, reflecting Eisenberg’s ambition to blend veteran talent with emerging voices. Moore––who announced “that’s a wrap” on social media––revealed she performed all her own singing, underscoring the production’s commitment to authenticity.

Eisenberg, who wrote the screenplay and original songs, told Variety the project is “completely joyful and unhinged,” aiming to “celebrate the chaos and catharsis of community...

Julianne Moore ‘Just Wrapped’ Jesse Eisenberg’s Upcoming A24 Musical: ‘We’re All Singing in It’
Image
Julianne Moore celebrated the premiere of her next project, “Sirens” on Netflix, on Tuesday, May 20 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The limited series features Moore alongside Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Kevin Bacon, and Glenn Howerton in the Margot Robbie-produced project from “Maid” creator Molly Smith Metzler.

On the carpet, IndieWire caught up with Moore about Jesse Eisenberg’s upcoming A24 musical film. As for what she can tease, Moore told us that she will indeed be showing off her vocal chops, a follow-up to singing a little bit in 2021’s “Dear Evan Hansen”: “Yes, I am. I’m singing. We’re all singing in it,” she said.

“Jesse Eisenberg is just the most extraordinary person,” she continued. “He’s so incredibly creative. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with him. This is very different, but I think that he can have sort of a satirical worldview.

‘New York, New York’ Musical Sets Broadway Closing
Image
New York, New York, the John Kander & Fred Ebb musical that arrived on Broadway last spring to considerable anticipation, will play its final performance on Sunday, July 30, having played just 33 preview and 110 regular performances.

The musical, which features additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, opened to mixed-to-negative reviews at the St. James Theatre on April 26. The approximately $25 million production was nominated for nine Tony Awards but took the trophy for only one – Beowulf Boritt’s elaborate scenic design.

Recent weeks have seen attendance at the St. James hovering around 70% of capacity.

“We would like to thank the extraordinarily gifted and committed performers, who have been a dream to work with, alongside all of the friends — John Kander, David Thompson, Sharon Washington, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the sublime orchestra, the unwaveringly dedicated creative, production and administrative teams, the backstage staff and technicians, all of whom were...

Broadway Musical ‘New York, New York’ Will Close on July 30
Image
New York, New York, the latest Kander and Ebb musical on Broadway, announced Sunday that it will close in one week.

The musical, which also features additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is inspired by the 1977 film, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. The show opened at the St. James Theatre on April 26 and will now play its final performance July 30.

The sudden closure comes as the large-scale production, which had a big cast and expansive scenery, has failed to pull in big numbers at the box office, amid unfavorable reviews. In recent weeks, capacity has hovered just above 70 percent. Additionally, the musical won only one Tony Award, for best scenic design, after being nominated for nine, including best musical.

Oscar nominee Hong Chau was aces on ‘Poker Face’
Image
Hong Chau will be looking to round off a pretty good year by snagging her first-ever Emmy nomination. This would come after she claimed her first Oscar bid, which came in Best Supporting Actress for “The Whale.” That was for her moving performance opposite Brendan Fraser in Darren Aronofsky‘s film. But, now, on the TV side of things, she will be competing for Best Comedy Guest Actress for Rian Johnson‘s “Poker Face.”

The Peacock episodic murder-mystery show follows Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, a young woman who goes on the run from a casino following a suspicious death. On her journey, she encounters various, mysterious new cases and uses her unbelievable ability to figure out if somebody is lying to help solve the murder. The show follows a case-of-the-week format and introduces new characters and guest actors every week, who are all a treat to watch. And none more so than Chau.

2023 Tony Awards Goes On Without Writers: ‘Some Like It Hot,’ ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ & ‘Leonpoldstadt’ Win Top Honors
Image
On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.

At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.

The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

Ariana DeBose returned as the host,...

Image
On Sunday evening, the 2023 Tony Awards will recognize the best of Broadway during the 76th annual celebration hosted by Ariana DeBose. The ceremony, which unfolded a bit differently this year after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike with studios over fair compensation, revealed the winners of 26 categories while still providing a showcase for many of the top nominees with live musical performances.

Leading up to the big night, a total of 27 new productions were nominated, with the musical adaptation of Some Like It Hot coming out on top with a total of 13. The other top musicals were & Juliet, New York New York and Shucked with nine each and Kimberly Akimbo with eight. The most nominated revived musical, meanwhile, was Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which also garnered eight nods.

On the play side, Ain’t No Mo’ and Leopoldstadt were the most nominated originals...

Tony Awards Predictions: Who Will Win & Who Should Win On Broadway’s Big Night 2023
Image
Has there ever been a less predictable Tony Awards?

Just a few weeks ago there were doubts that a televised ceremony would even happen, due to the ongoing WGA strike. That problem proved to be just a speed bump: The guild agreed not to picket the show, but the show will include no scripts, no pre-written introductions or podium banter. There will be the usual musical numbers from the nominated shows — the heart of the ceremony — as well as some additional performances, tributes to John Kander and Joel Grey, the traditional In Memoriam segment and, well, we’ll all just have to wait and see for the rest.

But the usual Will Wins/Should Wins are predictions of a different sort, and no strike or toxic-looking orange sky over New York City can stop those speculations. So here we go. Deadline’s 2023 Tony Awards Predictions,...

2023 Tony Awards: Predicting the Likely Winners, from A Doll’s House to Kimberly Akimbo
Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot (1959)
There’s a shadow hanging over the 2023 Tony Awards, and we don’t just mean the WGA strike, which nearly derailed Broadway’s biggest night. In a Broadway season boasting three nonbinary actors in major musical roles, the Tonys continue to require performers to submit themselves in either of the gendered actor and actress categories.

Both Some Like It Hot’s J. Harrison Ghee and Shucked’s Alex Newell are frontrunners in the categories they selected, while Justin David Sullivan, who would have been eligible in one of the featured performer categories for & Juliet, removed themselves from consideration early in the season. This year, the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards, which recognize both Broadway and Off Broadway productions, shed their gendered performance categories, allowing recent wins at both ceremonies for Ghee and Newell in all-gender fields.

If Ghee and Newell repeat those victories at the Tonys, it’ll...

‘Poker Face’: Which 19 comedy guest acting contenders are entered for 2023 Emmys? [Exclusive]
Image
One of the hottest Emmy contenders for the 2023 comedy categories is “Poker Face” for NBC and Peacock. Created by Rian Johnson, the mystery show stars Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine if someone is lying. That is not good news for the murderers she encounters on her cross-country escape from a threat in Las Vegas.

Each guest star is virtually a lead performer for their one and only episode of the 10 first season installments. We see who is killed in the opening moments of an episode, and then Charlie enters to figure things out. The show is much in the style of the landmark mystery series “Columbo,” with touches from “Murder, She Wrote,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Rockford Files” as well.

2023 Tony Awards slugfest: Final predictions for musical nominations [Watch]
Image
Another busy Broadway season has drawn to a close and Tony nominations are just days away. David Buchanan joins me in a rousing slugfest to sift through what musicals will be remembered at the 2023 Tony Awards. The sheer volume of quality productions and striking performances in contention makes for exciting races that are challenging to predict. Watch our full video slugfest above.

We begin by examining the potential nominees for Best Musical, which is possibly the only straightforward race in this discussion. David and I are certain that “Kimberly Akimbo,” “Some Like it Hot,” “& Juliet,” and “Shucked” should feel secure about their impending nominations. But that final spot is totally “up for grabs.”

I’m fairly certain that the “grandness” of “New York, New York,” with its lush design elements and swoon-worthy dancing, will help the show attain a spot in the lineup. Plus, the show should benefit from the...

‘New York, New York’ Broadway Review: Kander & Ebb Musical Wakes Up Late For A City That Doesn’t Sleep
Image
Imagine a New York where construction workers tap dance on steel girders high above the city, sorta like that famous photograph you’ve seen a million times, and where kindly landladies who once played Carnegie Hall might tutor a young Holocaust refugee to a Julliard scholarship, and breezy jam sessions do away with generations of friction between races, genders and sexual identities. You’d go there, right?

Well, you can. New York, New York, the new(ish) Kander & Ebb musical, opens tonight at Broadway’s St. James Theatre. But be warned: Even the rosiest-hued urban utopia can get a bit tiresome when it’s this overstuffed with good intentions.

Inspired, at least in name, by Martin Scorsese’s 1977 movie starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli, New York, New York is less an adaptation than it is a John Kander & Fred Ebb jukebox musical: In addition to the two very...

Outer Critics Circle nominations: ‘New York, New York’ leads with 12, ‘Leopoldstadt’ has 6
Image
The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.

“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.

This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

Colton Ryan on recreating the sound of the 1940s and working with legends [Exclusive Video Interview]

“I’m a nerd first,” Colton Ryan quickly points out. In that sense, the actor is having the time of his life on his two recent projects which have connected him with legends in the industry. Ryan recently worked with auteur director Rian Johnson on the hit Peacock series “Poker Face.” He also currently stars in the new Broadway musical “New York, New York,” where he is directed by Susan Stroman while singing tunes by theater icons John Kander and the late Fred Ebb (with an assist from Lin-Manuel Miranda). “From my nerd perspective I’m just elated that I’m even associated with any of these songs,” admits Ryan. Natasha Lyonne and ‘Poker Face’ on the rise in Emmy comedy best actress/series odds – and that’s no lie
Image
Don’t look now, but Natasha Lyonne and her first-year Peacock murder mystery/comedy “Poker Face” are rising fast on Gold Derby. Lyonne, a four-time Emmy nominee now sits in fifth place with combined odds of 17/2 after passing Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”) this week. Having jumped five spots since mid-February, she now trails only Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”), Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) and Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) among leads.

The rise hasn’t been quite as dramatic for “Poker Face” in the comedy series. Over the last week, it slipped past “What We Do in the Shadows” to claim the eighth spot with 16/1 combined odds. This means that were the Emmy nominations to be announced tomorrow, and if they followed our predictions, the show would be among the nominees – the first Peacock effort to be so honored. The seven shows in front of it are,...

The book chronicles four hundred years of the rise and fall of one of America’s most powerful dynasties. From the family’s humble beginnings in New Amsterdam, patriarch Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt weaponized cunning, cutthroat business tactics to amass unimaginable wealth leading to power struggles between heirs over control, salacious scandals and financial ruin.
