Along with Haim, other new additions to the cast include “A Thousand and One” breakout Teyana Taylor, “Creed” actor Wood Harris, rapper Shayna McHayle (a.k.a. Junglepussy) and newcomer Chase Infiniti. Anderson is producing the film with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.

With production beginning in Northern California for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature, the casting announcements are finally starting to flow in. After Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, and Sean Penn were announced, we learned this week that newcomer Chase Infiniti is part of the ensemble.
Now, THR reports Licorice Pizza star Alana Haim will join the project, alongside Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One), Wood Harris, and Shayna McHayle aka Junglepussy (Support the Girls).
The recent set photos have also further fueled much speculation that Paul Thomas Anderson is taking on a contemporary update of Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, shifting its 1984-set depiction of Reagan’s reign of terror to the Maga state of today. If this proves to be the case, we would imagine DiCaprio takes the lead Zoyd Wheeler role, Regina Hall is Frenesi Gates, Chase Infiniti is their daughter Prairie, and Sean Penn plays the villainous Brock Vond.

In some ways, the 2010s belonged to women in Hollywood. The last ten years saw a renewed resurgence of conversations about diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. Actresses and filmmakers sharing their stories of sexual assault or exploitation became among the first to usher in the #MeToo movement and change the way the public talks about gender violence and discrimination. Yet, for all the many strides these past several years, there continues to be a lack of women behind and in front of the camera and throughout several branches of craft and technical fields of the business.
Women characters have yet to reach on-screen parity with their male counterparts, actresses’ careers have impossibly shorter shelf lives than their male co-stars, and women still face a daunting wage gap throughout the industry. There’s a lot of work left to be done on and off the screen, but for now, let’s...

We follow Lisa as she goes through all manners of problems concerning her co-workers, personal life and societal prejudice. The strongest element of Andrew Bujalski’s film is the sub-textual gender politics that surround the events that occur within the film. How good a movie year was 2018? Netflix got snubbed from the Cannes Film Festival and still managed to give the world “Roma,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “Happy as Lazzaro” and a reconstruction of Orson Welles’ final film (plus two captivating documentaries about its production and restoration). The ubiquitous superhero genre gave us instant classics like “Black Panther” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse,” and even embraced its sillier side with “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies,” “Aquaman” and “Deadpool 2.” This was a year so great that it gave us not one but two juicy lead roles for John C. Reilly.
Paring the year’s highlights down to 25, let alone 10, was no easy feat, but here goes:
#11-25 (alphabetically): “1985,” “Annihilation,” “A Bread Factory,” “Burning,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, “The Favourite,” “First Reformed,” “Lizzie,” “Private Life,” “Shoplifters,” “Skate Kitchen,” “Stan & Ollie,” “A Star Is Born,” “Tully,” “Zama...

To those of us who have toiled at fast food joints designed to be as alienating and as profitable as possible, the feeling is a painfully recognizable one: After eight hours of working on your feet, peddling here and there—but mostly staying in the same, agonizingly static position—your knees begin to give, your back to seize, and your feet to cramp. Lisa (Regina Hall), the manager of a Hooters knockoff located somewhere between the highways and byways of Austin, Texas, knows the physical cost of streamlined labor all too well. On the single day portrayed in Andrew Bujalski’s Support the Girls, this tenacious yet tender middle-aged black woman mostly pulls off the virtuosic juggling act demanded of her. As new recruits are hired (to keep up with the accelerated turnover at low-income jobs) and long-standing ones wrangled, the troupe of young, scantily-clad waitresses prepare for the day ahead.

They call ’em “breastaurants” — those sports-bar-and-grills less known for their cuisine than their well-endowed waitresses poured into tight t-shirts and oh-so-suggestive shorts. If you’ve been to Hooters, or are aware of the concept behind this formerly popular pin-up-calendar-come-to-life chain, you know the business model. These places sell dudes a sanitized version of sex with a side of hot wings — or as a character says in Support the Girls, a fantasy fueled by “boobs, brews and big screens.” It’s why people come to Double Whammies, the movie’s fictional...

The Regina Hall-starrer “Support the Girls” may be targeted toward working-class women in the ‘Hooters’-esque ‘breastaurant’ industry, but today’s rapidly increasing ticket prices could very well be keeping them out of theaters.
“As much as in my idealistic dream world, everybody would still go to the movie theaters, I understand that the culture’s moved on, the technology’s moved on, and … certainly the Arclight — I don’t know what they charge now — but not everybody can come out to [see] this,” director Andrew Bujalski told Variety at premiere on Wednesday.
The indie drama features Hall as Lisa, the general manager of Double Whammies, a highway-side sports bar. Through Lisa’s eyes, and the experiences of her female servers, the film exposes the grit and sisterhood that come with waiting on the restaurant’s male clientele.

Workplace comedies used to be all the rage in the independent film world. Clerks was the movie that launched 1000 others, after all. Recently, there hasn’t been much in the way of this genre. Now, however, we have a new one that stands tall with something to say. Opening this week, Support the Girls is a winner of a workplace comedy and character study. Filmmaker Andrew Bujalski has his most mainstream work yet, one that suggests the former mumblecore godfather may have a future attracting larger audiences. He has a singular view of the world, so that often leads to a smaller group interested in his work. Not this time though. This is a winner that everyone can easily enjoy. The film is a comedy, but one more concerned with the little moments that make up a day than just making you laugh. This is the synopsis that Magnolia put...

"You're not wearing a whole lot of clothes, but it's a family place." Magnolia Pictures has released the first official trailer for an indie comedy film titled Support the Girls, about a group of women who work at a highway-side "sports bar with curves" - basically Hooters, but not really because that brand is trademarked. This is the latest film from Andrew Bujalski and it first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Regina Hall stars as the manager of the bar, whose optimism and faith is "tested over the course of a long, strange day." The film's full ensemble cast includes Haley Lu Richardson, Dylan Gelula, Aj Michalka, Shayna McHayle, Lea DeLaria, James Le Gros, Jana Kramer, Brooklyn Decker, and Lawrence Varnado. Well, I'll be damned, this looks fantastic - seems to be a very smart satire with a few low key excellent performances. Check this out.

From his early so-called mumblecore days to his higher-profile features like Results, there’s been flashes of brilliance in all of Andrew Bujalski’s work, and now he’s created his best feature yet with Support the Girls. Starring Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, Shayna McHayle, Brooklyn Decker, Jana Kramer, James Le Gros, Dylan Gelula, Aj Michalka and Lea DeLaria, the film follows a group of workers at a sports bar as they band together under the pressures of life and difficulties of the job.
John Fink said in his review from SXSW, “Bujalski as a filmmaker has created a film as fascinating as anything in his previous output. Similar to what he’s done for early computing, disabilities, and the fitness industry, he’s again demystified unseen worlds, finding gentle humor and drama in these settings. Support The Girls tackles diversity, racial identity, and an economy built on flirting and mutual exploitation.

Double Whammy is the kind of roadside “breasturant” that sells escapism alongside their fried food and burgers. They may in fact be a dying breed as those damn millennials are choosing to eat healthy, fresh, local, and artisanal; or as we’re told by Double Whammy’s national competition, Man Cave – millennials prefer booties. This is the kind of place with “big ass” or “man size” beers, big screen TVs, and “cute” young waitresses instructed to flirt with clientele. And it’s the setting for the most mainstream comedy yet from Andrew Bujalski, a founding member of Mumblecore. Director of pioneering films of the sub-genre like Funny Ha Ha and Beeswax, Bujalski’s latest film, Support The Girls, is a very funny drama following a day in the life of manager Lisa, as played brilliantly by Regina Hall.

“Life keeps throwing you bullshit,” says Lisa (Regina Hall), in Andrew Bujalski’s remarkable “Support the Girls,” a thoughtful and touching look at the day in the life of a woman running an Austin sports bar, and her maternal support of the scantily clad waitresses who answer to her. Lisa has to put up with a lot of bullshit: an attempted robbery, unruly sexist customers, the bar’s obnoxious owner (James LeGros), marriage troubles, and her own staff. But she juggles each new challenge with a steely resolve that makes her one of Bujalski’s greatest characters, the indefatigable creation of a filmmaker who excels at exploring the nuances of human behavior.
There’s nothing subtle about Lisa’s place of an employment, the crudely named Double Whammies, where she oversees a sexist operation with an unusual amount of dignity. The movie unfolds as a succession of small moments, with...
