In the landscape of contemporary romance, Rule (Chase Stokes), a tattoo artist, and Shaw (Sydney Taylor), a seemingly perfect student, emerge as complex characters wrestling with deep family wounds.
Their relationship—a nuanced exploration of unspoken connections—reveals the intricate dynamics of modern emotional interactions. Rooted in long-standing friendship, they navigate a delicate dance of subtle glances and hesitant interactions.
The narrative delves into emotional barriers and personal struggles that shape romantic experiences. Rule, burdened by his twin brother’s death, wrestles with vulnerability, while Shaw grapples with her mother’s intense social pressures. Their story peels back layers of interpersonal complexity, challenging typical romantic tropes and examining the intricate psychological landscapes that influence human connections.
“Marked Men: Rule + Shaw” offers a raw glimpse into the fragile terrain of young relationships, inviting viewers to reflect on the depth and authenticity of emotional bonds.

There are few directors with as eclectic of a career as Nick Cassavetes. From The Notebook to God Is A Bullet, the type of movie he makes can span quite a wide range. He switches back and forth between darker stories and sappy romances so you never quite know what you’re going to get with him. His latest film, Marked Men: Rule + Shaw (which I can’t help but constantly call it Marked Men: Hobbs and Shaw) takes the latter approach and puts the book series Marked Men in his sights. The adaptation really wasn’t for me (check out my review Here) but I’m sure there are teen girls who will love the melodrama on display here.

Jay Crownover made a splash with readers of romance novels 12 years ago with “Rule,” a good-girl-tames-bad-boy tale that generated five interlocking follow-ups. Their blanket title “Marked Men” referred to tattoos — a frequent motif in the prolific author’s several subsequent books. Now there’s a screen translation in “Marked Men: Rule + Shaw,” which ostensibly draws on the whole sextet but focuses on its first installment.
Whether this Fathom Events release will itself generate sequels is a question mark left dangling at the end of these 90-odd minutes, which play theaters nationwide Jan. 22 and 23. Crownover’s fans enthuse over her bringing above-average character dimension to the genre’s usual “spicy” content requirements. Yet neither of those qualities really comes across in “The Notebook” director Nick Cassavetes’ feature, a fairly painless diversion — albeit one shallow as a kiddie pool in emotional engagement, while surprisingly short on sexy-time as well as chemistry between...

Plot: Shaw has loved Rule since she saw him, but Rule doesn’t see her as a suitable match, but a night of drinking and secrets leads them to question if they can be together without ruining their relationship…or each other.
Review: The theater experience has struggled over the years, with mid-budget comedies and romance films being the biggest victims. The solution to this has been to release the films for a limited time in theaters via a company like Fathom or Icon Events. And it seems to give films that would usually be relegated to streaming, a chance at success in theaters. Marked Men: Rule + Shaw is probably a film that should have just stayed streaming as it’s a sadly hollow experience.

Filming has wrapped on a horror thriller called The Cure, and Deadline reports that the film stars Ashley Greene of the Twilight franchise and genre regular David Dastmalchian, who was recently seen in the likes of Late Night with the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Afraid, and The Boogeyman. Newcomer Samantha Cochran also has a lead role.
Nancy Leopardi, who previously directed Nanny Cam and Lethal Seduction, was at the helm of this one, working from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writing duo behind Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane. The story they crafted for The Cure centers on Cochran’s character, Ally Braun, an adopted 16-year-old with a mysterious illness who learns her bio-tech billionaire parents (Dastmalchian and Greene) are harvesting her blood for nefarious purposes.
Sydney Taylor (American Born Chinese), Tyler Lawrence Gray (Wolfpack), and Dylan Flashner (Running on Empty) round out the cast.

Deadline has revealed that David Dastmalchian and Ashley Greene are set to star in the upcoming sci-fi horror film ‘The Cure.’ Joining them in this eerie venture is newcomer Samantha Cochran.
Under the direction of Nancy Leopardi and penned by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the team behind ‘Unsane,’ the movie promises a gripping narrative steeped in the frights of biotechnology.
‘The Cure’ centers on Ally Braun, a role taken by Cochran, who is an adopted 16-year-old suffering from a mysterious illness.
Her journey takes a dark turn when she discovers her biotech billionaire parents, portrayed by Dastmalchian and Greene, are exploiting her illness for their own sinister purposes.
Director Leopardi has described the movie as a satirical thriller that critiques the modern billionaire class through the lens of classic horror and sci-fi films.
She aligns ‘The Cure’ with influential titles like ‘Ex-Machina’ and ‘Videodrome,’ known for their commentary on technological and societal shifts.

ColorCreative’s Find Your People Program is introducing more people – this time, composers.
The talent development initiative from the company founded by Issa Rae, Deniese Davis and Talitha Watkins is unique in that it isn’t only targeted to emerging creatives in above-the-line roles. Instead, it solicits applicants from seven disciplines – directors, producers, cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, editors and now composers – to form four separate production crews, with one representative from a field on each project.
Each team works together to pitch a greenlight committee and will receive funding from program partner Canva, whose visual communication platform is used throughout Fypp’s yearlong curriculum-based training workshops.
“It’s been a privilege to support the Find Your People Program, and we’re delighted to be back for a second year,” Canva global head of consumer marketing Kristine Segrist said in a statement. “There is incredible value alignment between our brands...

American Born Chinese has been canceled by Disney+ after one season, likely due to low viewership numbers. The show is unlikely to be picked up by another streaming platform due to its large scale and licensing issues. Season 2 could have expanded on the mythological origins of the story and introduced other Chinese figures, but it will not happen.
The Disney Plus original series American Born Chinese presented an action-comedy experience unlike anything else on the streaming service, but season 2 isn't happening. This is why we can’t have nice things. Disney+ announced today that it will not move forward with a second season of the action-fantasy series American Born Chinese. The decision to cancel the series comes seven months after Disney debuted the eight-episode series on its streaming service, Disney+. The cancelation is raising a red flag for fans of the series, as Disney tends to purge content from Disney+ to save money and digital real estate. We’ve seen the mouse-eared streamer purge content before, with shows like Willow, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and more. According to Deadline, options on the cast expired yesterday. However, there could be a silver lining to this disappointing news. 20th Television still plans to shop the series to other outlets, giving the show a chance to live again through another platform.

“American Born Chinese” has been canceled after one season at Disney+, Variety has learned.
According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Disney was high on the creative of the series, but its viewership did not justify greenlighting a second season. The producers plan to shop the series to other outlets.
“American Born Chinese” debuted on Disney+ on May. The Disney Branded Television series was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The cast of the series included Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu, Ke Huy Quan, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu. The show received positive reviews from critics, with the first season holding a 94% approval rating based on 51 reviews.

Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

The decision comes more than seven months after the eight-episode first season was released May 24. It also comes after the options on the cast expired yesterday, I hear. 20th Television still plans to shop the series elsewhere.

Disney+ has mined the world of superheroes quite well with their various series forays into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, there are other graphic novels and stories that fit within the Disney wheelhouse. It is a fortuitous coincidence that Everything Everywhere All At Once won big at the Academy Awards just as marketing began for American Born Chinese, boasting Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, amongst many other cast members. But it is no coincidence that American Born Chinese is a solid series for the streaming platform.

Chinese folklore gets a Disney spin in “American Born Chinese,” an eight-episode series created by Kelvin Yu, which landed on Disney+ on Wednesday. An adaptation of the 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, the series centers on Bay Area teenager Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who becomes entangled in a fantastical quest after a new classmate, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), reveals himself to be the son of the Monkey King and recruits Jin to help him search for the Fourth Scroll.
Featuring an all-star cast that includes Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Chin Han, Yann Yann Yeo and Sydney Taylor, “American Born Chinese” recontextualizes ancient history for modern audiences both familiar and unfamiliar with the original stories, bringing together the talents of some of the most prominent Asian actors, writers and directors in entertainment.

American Born Chinese is now streaming on Disney+, and season 1 skillfully takes audiences through young Jin's (Ben Wang) hero journey while also introducing them to iconic figures from Chinese mythology. Jin's cautious way of life is thrown into chaos when he meets transfer student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), whose overconfidence stems from his heritage as the son of the Monkey King. The latter, believing that Jin holds the key to saving Heaven, drags his friend into a world of powerful gods and destined missions — but all Jin wants is to ask out new girl Amelia (Sydney Taylor).
Though the series is based on Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel of the same name, American Born Chinese also borrows many characters and elements from the classic novel Journey to the West. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan plays a fairly minor role in the Disney+ family series American Born Chinese. But there may be no more important character to convey what the show is trying to do, and how well it succeeds at most of it.

American Born Chinese, which premieres May 24 on Disney+, is a sweet and stunning series that throws an awkward high schooler into the mystical world of Chinese gods. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel Gene Luen Yang and directed by Shang Chi's Destin Daniel Cretton, the new show follows the meek Jin, who is afraid to stand up for himself and doesn't know where he belongs. When he reluctantly befriends the new transfer student Wei-Chen, he learns more than he ever imagined possible about himself and his heritage.
The young cast consists of Ben Wang as unwitting hero Jin, Jimmy Liu as his ultra-confident cohort Wei-Chen, and Sydney Taylor as Jin's school crush Amelia. Though American Born Chinese stands on its own as a charming coming-of-age tale, the Disney+ series gets a star-studded boost from the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once. In recent years, films and television shows have been tasked with the mission of depicting under-represented groups on screen while passing a simple litmus test: Who is this for? For American Born Chinese, it’s immediately apparent that the answer is everyone. The show’s characters speak Mandarin about 30 percent of the time, and signs of Asian-Americana are littered throughout. Yet despite its cultural specificities, this adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name is an obvious play for Disney’s general audience, what with its comic storyline mixed with fantasy and martial arts.
The series begins with Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a teen struggling to find his social footing, being tasked with showing Chinese transfer student Wei-chen (Jim Liu) around school. A culture clash ensues as Wei-chen, due to his accent and awkwardness, thwarts Jin’s burgeoning popularity. Jin is initially horrified by Wei-chen’s...

Actor Ke Huy Quan says portraying an American born Chinese in the upcoming series of the same name “scared the hell” out of him.
Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s’ historic Oscar wins ‘Beef’ and on May 24, ‘American Born Chinese’.

At a White House event on Monday, President Joe Biden expressed support for Hollywood writers in their ongoing strike, saying in part that he hopes they receive “a fair deal they deserve as soon as possible.”
Biden’s comments came after a special screening of the upcoming Disney+ series “American Born Chinese,” held to honor Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
“Nights like these are a reminder of stories and the importance of treating storytellers with the dignity, respect and the value they deserve. I sincerely hope the writers’ strike in Hollywood gets resolved and the writers are given a fair deal they deserve as soon as possible,” Biden said.
“This is an iconic, meaningful American industry. And we need the writers and all the workers and everyone involved to tell the stories of our nation and the stories of all of us,” Potus added.

Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.”

Ever since its original publication in 2006, the acclaimed graphic novel "American Born Chinese" by author Gene Luen Yang has always felt ripe for a live-action adaptation. Divided up into three initially unconnected stories, the story manages to balance mythical and possibly supernatural tales involving Chinese deities with the otherwise grounded and all-too-relatable struggles of two Chinese students — one American-born, the other recently emigrated from China — attempting to assimilate and fit in among the daunting environment of high school. How these disparate threads manage to intersect in the end is well worth reading to find out.
The rights to a series-length adaptation ultimately found its way to Disney, with "Short Term 12" and "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton attached to direct several episodes and starring practically the entire core cast of "Everything Everywhere All At Once".
