The word-of-mouth has been positive. Both Vadivelu and Fahadh Faasil received a thumbs-up for their acting chops, but the overall storyline is just decent. The Tamil drama thriller made a slow start at the box office, but the graph remained in the upward direction throughout the first weekend.

As per Sacnilk, Maareesan earned an estimated 1.39 crores on day 3. It remained on similar lines as 1.37 crore earned on the first Saturday. The opening weekend total comes to 3.51 crore net, approximately 4.14 crores in gross earnings.

Maareesan is set to release this week and marks the reunion of Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu after their collaboration in the 2023 political drama Maamannan. However, unlike their previous outing, Maareesan is not a political film. This time, the story unfolds as a road movie. In an interview with OTTPlay, director Sudheesh Sankar revealed that while the first half plays out like a thriller, the second half will take the audience by complete surprise. He also noted that Vadivelu will be seen in a role unlike anything he has done before.

The idea of bringing Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu together for a film like this, the director revealed, came only after watching Maamannan. In that sense, Maamannan acted as a catalyst for Maareesan. As for the title, there’s an interesting story behind it, too. The name Maareesan is drawn from the Hindu epic Ramayan.

Sung by 40 singers, the title track is an unprecedented blend of 17th and 18th century inspired local Tamil choir with the revered Budapest orchestra, as Simon King brought together 100 musicians from around the world.

Sharing his process of composing music for the series, Simon King said, “When we decided that we are going for choral music and choral arrangements, the first challenge was to get a good choir. There were a lot of voices needed, and they should be able to pronounce and sing perfectly.

"When I first heard the narration of 'November Story' from director Ram Subramanian, I could have never anticipated that the storyline was going to be so layered. I have never watched a crime thriller series that is so complex and intriguing at the same time, and one that engages audiences in every episode like an authentic whodunit," she says.

"What commences as a plain Jane murder spirals into the unleashing of a series of hair-raising events interlaced with a multitude of characters and narratives that come to the fore, raising more and more questions while building mystery around the killer and motive," she promises.
