Local Is the New Universal: Saba’s Journey Through Shared Struggles
Image
After its world premiere and three sold-out screenings at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Saba, a film by Maksud Hossain, has embarked on a prestigious global festival circuit, screening at the Busan International Film Festival and now in competition at the Red Sea International Film Festival. I recently reconnected with Maksud, my Global Media Makers Fellow, for an in-depth conversation about the creation of his film, reflecting on our shared experience in Los Angeles back in June 2023.

Film Independent’s Global Media Makers (Gmm) is a six-week residency in LA, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, supporting independent filmmakers worldwide. This is where I, a Lebanese screenwriter and director, met Maksud Hossain from Bangladesh while we were both in the screenwriting track. It was here that I first read the screenplay for Saba and later watched an early draft of his debut film.

Joe Cole and Sope Dirisu in Gangs of London (2020)
Gangs of London | Cast confirmed for series 3
Joe Cole and Sope Dirisu in Gangs of London (2020)
Violent crime drama Gangs of London is back for a third series, the cast has been confirmed.

After revitalising action cinema with the two astonishing martial arts films in The Raid franchise, Gareth Evans turned to television, co-creating Gangs of London with Matt Flannery in 2019.

A sprawling crime saga, the show follows the Wallace family as they grapple to keep control of their criminal empire. And we’ve had two series of it so far, with plenty of memorable moments to talk about.

The show became known for its notoriously violent action scenes, which are as visceral and gory as anything seen in a big screen slasher. Unsurprisingly, given Evans’ involvement, the work that went into those scenes was really quite something. And now, with season three confirmed and on its way, we wait to see

Reprising their roles are Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísu as Carter, Joe Cole as Sean Wallace, Michelle Fairley as Marian Wallace,...

‘Gangs Of London’ Season 3 Cast Revealed
Image
Exclusive: Andrew Koji (Warrior), Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) and T’Nia Miller (Fall of the House of Usher) have boarded the upcoming season of Gangs of London.

The pair join the likes of Phil Daniels and Ruth Sheen in the anticipated third season of the Sky and AMC+ series, which is produced by Pulse Films.

Koji will play an unnamed assassin at the heart of the unfolding mystery across the series. Cornelius Quinn, played by Dormer, is a face from the past whose arrival awakens old rivalries for Marian Wallace and Ed Dumani. Miller takes on the role of the formidable new Mayor of London set to wreak havoc for the gangs.

Season kicks off with ex-undercover cop Elliot Carter, played by Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísu, now operating as a top-level criminal alongside the Dumanis, but their business is thrown into chaos when their shipment of cocaine is spiked, resulting in the...

Jamila Woods Unveils New Album Water Made Us: Stream
Image
Jamila Woods has shared her new album, Water Made Us, via Jagjaguwar. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.

The title of Water Made Us references Toni Morrison, who once said, “All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” The album maintains Woods’ interest in Black feminism, but, as a result of being written in the midst of quarantine, is more self-reflective than her past works.

“Water Made Us feels like the most personal and vulnerable piece of art I’ve ever made. I love creating from source material, diving deep into a subject and extrapolating from what I discover,” Woods said in a statement. “We sat in the house for two years and I became my own source material. Shout out to the therapists, the astrologers, the family members and friends who listened, who helped me process and transform...

Boygenius Pop Up at the Austin Airport, and Other Surprises
Image
The music portion of SXSW 2023 kicked off with wild parties, quietly powerful songwriting, new artists making an impression, and one surprise pop-up from an A-list act — all the things that make this a great festival. Here are the best things we saw on Monday, March 13 and Tuesday, March 14 (the music festival’s first full day).

Surprise! It’s Boygenius

“Phoebe’s got a plane to catch in 20 minutes,” Lucy Dacus tells me, nodding at her boygenius bandmate, last name Bridgers. We’re at a bar in the Austin airport. And the group has,...

J.I.D, Saba Kick Off Rolling Stone’s Future of Music Showcase With Fire and Lyrical Excellence
Image
It’s an exciting time to be a fan of sharp, focused music — and if the artists who kicked off Rolling Stone‘s Future of Music SXSW showcase at Acl Live at the Moody Theater in Austin on March 14 are any indication, there are even better things to come.

Spill Tab opened the first night of the four-night showcase with a few notes of deep-rumbling bass, some tight drums, Claire Chicha’s voice, and not much else. And that was enough. On record, Spill Tab is a compellingly lo-fi solo project for Chicha.

The Documentaries of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy – Liff Special Review
There is a bittersweet bit of irony at play in the fact that Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s Academy-award winning short documentary film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness is on the schedule at LIFF2016. I watched it the same day I heard about the death of Pakistani internet sensation Qandeel Baloch (allegedly an honour killing at the hands of her brother).

A Girl in the River traces the case of the attempted honour killing of a girl at the hands of her father and uncle. Each year, the film tells us, at least 1000 Pakistani women are killed by family members who deem that they have sullied the family “izzat” or honour in some way. Saba’s “crime” was to run away and marry – in fact, to marry the man that her own family had arranged her marriage with, a marriage they decided to break off when Saba...

The case of Saba Qaiser and the film-maker determined to put an end to 'honour' killings
In 2014, Saba Qaiser was shot in the head by her father and dumped in a river. She survived. Now Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy wants her Oscar-nominated film about Saba to expose the shameful crime Pakistan has ignored for too long

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a documentary film-maker whose 2012 film about acid violence, Saving Face, made her the first Pakistani to win an Academy Award. This year, she is nominated again for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, which tells the story of 19-year-old Saba Qaiser, from the Pakistani province of Punjab, whose father and uncle shot her in the face and threw her in a river because she had married without her family’s consent. Because she had tilted her head at the last minute, Saba survived the shooting and managed to get to a petrol station for help. But although her father and uncle were subsequently arrested,...
