Lionsgate Television finally unveiled the 4K, Blu-ray and DVD release date for Dune: Prophecy, which had just wrapped up its six-episode first season. The sci-fi prequel is led by Emily Watson as Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen and Olivia Williams as Reverend Mother Tula Harkonnen.

Dune fans will now have a chance to purchase their own copy of HBO’s latest epic drama Dune: Prophecy, once Season 1 officially arrives on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. According to Collider, the two-disc set of Dune: Prophecy Season 1 will be available to buy starting on April 15, 2025, for the suggested retail prices of 4K - $29.95, Blu-ray - $24.95, and $19.95 - DVD. At the moment, Lionsgate has yet to release the special features that will be included in its physical release. Since making its debut, the show has received positive reviews from critics, with a Tomatometer score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 85 reviews.

The first season finale of Dune: Prophecy is in the can, and it was by far the most action-packed, eventful episode of the show so far. The twists came fast and furious. Together, dear readers, we’ve made it. Through the jarring edits, the meaningful looks, the scheming and the space weasels. Everything we’ve experienced in Dune: Prophecy so far has built to this – the grand finale. The moment where truths are revealed and scores are settled. Well, sort of.

In the land of television, final episodes are often supposed to leave us with something to chew over and questions to ask ourselves. But not quite like this. Maybe it’s just this writer, but there were at least two moments in episode six that prompted reactions along the lines of, ‘Eh?’ and ‘Wait,...

Dune: Prophecy serves up a meaty finale worthy of its expanded hour-and-20-minute runtime. This was a proper climax to the six episodes so far, and now that we know the show is coming back for a second season, I can rest easy knowing we'll actually get to see what happens next.

Billed as a Bene Gesserit origin story, the series has been light on the in-fighting within the Sisterhood, focusing instead on an anti-Imperium rebellion, authoritarianism under the reign of Emperor Javico Corrino, and a strange and troubling prophecy that has something to do with the Machine War that took place before the events of the series.

The series will return for a second season, showrunner Alison Schapker announced at a press conference Thursday. The renewal comes a few days ahead of the show’s first-season finale, which debuts Dec. 22 on HBO and Max.

According to HBO, the premiere episode of Dune: Prophecy has racked up 15 million viewers worldwide on Max since its Nov. 17 debut.

Denis Villeneuve has already created a masterpiece with his Dune duology. However, Warner Bros.’s poor attempt at recreating the similar scale and vision of his universe with Dune: Prophecy has failed spectacularly, to say the least.

The studio could not grasp the depth and layers that the complex narrative of Villeneuve’s universe holds, let alone implement it on a subliminal level in the new series. As such, Dune: Prophecy makes a daring few attempts to rise to the levels that its parent universe laid down for the fans. But even after 6 episodes, it ultimately fails to ascend to the level of perfection that Villeneuve achieved within his 2-hour-long masterpieces.

This week's episode of Dune: Prophecy features a major escalation of stakes in several ways. Not only does Desmond Hart's (Travis Fimmel) fiery demonstration at the Landsraad pit Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) against the Great Houses, but the death of Evgeny Harkonnen (Mark Addy) in the episode's final moments likewise marks a turning point for the future of Valya's (Emily Watson) disgraced house. Yet, despite Episode 4's public executions and private betrayals, one of the most unnerving scenes in the latest installment of Max's prequel series is when Lila (Chloe Lea) is seemingly resurrected in the depths of Wallach IX, with the character's unnatural return bringing audiences one step closer to the true villain of Dune: Prophecy.

Dune: Prophecy is firing on pretty much every cylinder it has in its fourth episode, "Twice Born." The plot moves forward, the twists keep coming, and the character work is solid. That doesn't seem to have translated into this Dune prequel becoming a runaway hit, but it's enough for me.

Let's start with our B-plot on Wallach IX, where young Sister Emeline (Aoife Hinds) goes for a nighttime sleepwalk only to nearly take her own life in front of that weird reflecting pool in the school's courtyard, driven by some mysterious force. Sister Jen (Faoileann Cunningham) is there to wake her up. In fact, all of the young Bene Gesserit sisters-in-training were having nightmares, although Jen claims to be immune. To get the bottom of things, Tula (Olivia Williams) gives them all spice pellets and guides them in an art therapy exercise designed to help them remember what they saw.

Actor Timothée Chalamet is probably best known for his recent roles in Denis Villenueve’s Dune movie franchise, and as Willy Wonka in 2023’s Wonka, but 10 years ago he played the son of Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Chalamet was a guest picker on ESPN’s College GameDay show during which he predicted a win for McConaughey’s favorite team, the Texas Longhorns.

After the show, Chalamet posted on his Instagram a photo of himself and McConaughey with the caption: “My movie dad Cooper” with a teary-eyed emoji. Although the Longhorns ended up losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the game, Chalamet’s Instagram followers were more interested in the reunion between the two actors who worked together in 2014 than in the game itself. After Season 3’s revealing look into the past of characters, the next episode of Dune: Prophecy is due to be "incredible." From the teases by the cast, it is expected we’ll see another display of power by Travis Fimmel’s Desmond Hart as he continues to solidify his power.

Episode 4 will also see Valya attempt to bring her family, the Harkonnens, out from the cold after a century of forced shame. Fans will be eager to see how this plays out as the series comes closer to a close with only two episodes remaining in the season to come.

When Game of Thrones ended its eight-season run with its divisive finale in 2019, it was among the most watched series of all time. So, naturally, networks across the TV landscape were clamoring to find the next show that would recapture the original's enticing blend of political intrigue, intense violence, and pitiless storytelling. Plenty of shows have been labeled "the next Game of Thrones" over the past five years, from FX's Shogun to HBO's own attempt to recapture the magic in the prequel series House of the Dragon. And with the release of Dune: Prophecy, another big-budget epic has entered the fray.

While many shows have attempted to replicate Game of Thrones' success, very few of them have come anywhere close to its level of zeitgeist-capturing popularity. Time will tell if Dune: Prophecy becomes a true successor, but one thing that makes the comparison even more inevitable is the presence of some recognizable GoT faces.

The latest prequel series in the massive Dune franchise details the origins of the Bene Gesserit and chronicles the early steps the secretive sisterhood took in steering the trajectory of the Imperium from the shadows. Unlike Denis Villeneuve’s films, Dune: Prophecy takes place in the worlds beyond Arrakis and its desert sands. In fact, there’s hardly a worm in sight. What the series does possess is an array of various villains, all vying for ultimate control and power. In the show’s first episode, viewers were introduced to Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who heartlessly used his “gift” to murder Lord Pruwet Richeseand (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and is believed to have done the same to Reverend Mother Kasha Jinjo (Jihae). As such, he’s clearly the primary villain of the series, or so viewers might have initially thought.

Say whatever you will about Frank Herbert and Brian Herbert, but you cannot accuse them of being narrow in scope or not comprehensive in the fictional worlds they’ve built. There is a 10,000-year gap between the Denis Villeneuve “Dune” films and the events of “Dune: Prophecy,” and enough lore for production designer Tom Meyer to imbue every piece of that history into the design of the HBO series.

The assignment is a designer’s dream in many ways; Meyer needed to create a variety of extremely different environments that would be immediately visually distinct, even if they all share the same large-scale, imposing geometric force established in the films. But whether with the stern austerity of the Bene Gesserit base on Wallach IX or the cancerous grandeur that could potentially swallow up the Corrino family on Salusa Secundus, Meyer thought through how well, or how harshly, history would have treated them.

In its third episode, Dune: Prophecy looks to the past to show us just how Valya and Tula Harkonnen became the ruthless Bene Gesserit leaders we now know them as. After the end of Dune: Prophecy episode 2 saw the Bene Gesserit expelled from the emperor's home and inner circle, Valya has been backed into a corner. Now, after her confrontation with Desmond Hart, the series takes us to Lankiveil, the home planet of House Harkonnen, where much of this episode's action takes place as we track the formative years of Valya and Tula.

Episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy closed out with a face-off between what are widely viewed as the show's most interesting characters, and it looks like the shocking developments that followed have taken their toll on Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson).

Towards the end of "Two Wolves," Valya returned to Salusa Secundus to find herself confronted by the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who had previously admitted to using his strange pyrotechnic abilities to murder both Revered Mother Kasha (Jinhae) and the young Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior).

Upon learning that Hart - who apparently survived being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis - had made it his mission to wipe out the Sisterhood entirely, Valya uses "the Voice" to command the soldier to plunge his own dagger into his throat. Incredibly, Hart manages to resist the order.

Following Denis Villeneuve's epic sci-fi adventure Dune: Part 2, The Bene Gesserit's origin story is the subject of Dune: Prophecy on Max. Premiering on November 17, 2024, the six-part backstory concerns Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) establishing the Bene Gesserit, a socio-religious sect of women whose members gain supernatural strengths and powers through disciplined mental conditioning.

Set 10,000 years before the events of Dune, the pilot introduces viewers to a mysterious soldier named Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel). Desmond Hart does not appear in the Dune source novels and is solely created for the TV origin story, leading many to wonder who he is, his motives, and what special powers and superhuman strengths he uses to advance his mission.

Following Dune Part Two's massive success, it was no surprise that Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary would want to expand on the mythos with a television series. Dune: Prophecy recently premiered its first episode on HBO, providing insight into the world of Dune thousands of years before the birth of Paul Atreides. With a focus on the Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit, Dune: Prophecy is more concerned with the origins of the manipulative and powerful Harkonnen family, showcasing how the quarrels of the royal houses in the past would help shape the world that would lead to the events of Denis Villeneuve's films.

Despite the series' disconnect from the feature films, there is still overlap since they occur in the same shared Dune universe.
