Cartuna and Irony Point have acquired the North American distribution rights to Julian Glander’s feature debut, “Boys Go to Jupiter.” The animated feature bowed at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

Cartuna and Irony Point plan to release the film theatrically, kicking off Aug. 8 at New Your City’s IFC Center, followed by an Aug. 15 bow at the Laemmle Glendale in Los Angeles and rollout nationally.

Glander’s “Boys Go to Jupiter” is described as a surreal coming-of-age story set in suburban Florida. The film follows Billy 5000, a teenage delivery driver who stumbles into a cosmic mystery after a routine gig leaves him caretaker of a mysterious alien egg.

The voice cast includes Janeane Garofalo, Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman, Cole Escola, Eva Victor, Elsie Fisher, Tavi Gevinson, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Jack Corbett and Joe Pera.

The film was produced by Glander under his Pittsburgh-based studio, Glanderco, with Peisin Yang Lazo serving as executive producer.

Boxing great Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez is teaming with Cartuna and Campanario Entertainment to develop an adult animated series inspired by his life and career, Variety has learned exclusively.

“I’m excited to see my story and my career brought to TV through this incredible medium,” Álvarez said. “It will give my loyal fans a new way to follow my journey to the top of boxing and can also bring new followers to this beautiful sport.”

Erick Galindo will write and executive produce the series. James and Adam Belfer, the co-heads of Cartuna, will executive produce along with along with Mike Flavin, senior vice president of development at Cartuna. Jaime Dávila and Rico Martínez will executive produce for Campanario Entertainment. The project is currently in development and is expected to be taken out to networks and streamers later this year.

Syfy has set premiere dates for its first two Tzgz animated original series. Magical Girl Friendship Squad and Wild Life will premiere Saturday, September 26 with back-to-back episodes. Magical Girl Friendship Squad will kick it off at midnight, followed by Wild Life at around 12:15 Am Et/P on Syfy’s late-night adult animation block Tzgz.

Voiced by Ana Gasteyer, Quinta Brunson and Anna Akana, in Magical Girl Friendship Squad, when a little red panda named Nut (Gasteyer) arrives in the apartment of two directionless twenty-somethings and gives them the ability to transform into badass magical girls, Alex (Brunson) and Daisy (Akana) are forced to get their shit together in order to save the Universe from otherworldly threats.

The 6-episode, 15-minute anime-inspired comedy also stars Matteo Lane.

Exclusive: Syfy has set the full ensemble cast for the Tzgz anime-inspired comedy Magical Girl Friendship Squad. Led by Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Anna Akana (Let It Snow), series regulars also include Ana Gasteyer and Matteo Lane (The Comedy Lineup).
