Following Congress passing a rescission order to claw back $1.1 billion previously allocated to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting on July 18, the Cpb has announced it is effectively shutting down. It’ll eliminate most of its jobs by the end of September, with a small transition team kept in place until the end of January 2026 to wrap up final operations.
Make no mistake, though: This is not the end for public media. It’s a grim moment, because it represents that PBS and NPR will go very underfunded in the time ahead, and viewers and listeners will notice differences in the programs and services available to them. But at the end of the day, the Cpb was just the funding mechanism for PBS and NPR, the local stations that have been savvy at finding diversified revenue models over the years. There will be winners and losers with the Cpb going away,...

The romances on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have been somewhat unexpected. The show is set before Star Trek: The Original Series, so we know that pretty much none of these relationships are "endgame," so to speak. In a way, that gives Strange New Worlds the freedom to have a little fun with love stories that are doomed, angsty, non-traditional, and/or casual. That's how we ended up with the delightfully complex LA'an Noonian-Singh (Christina Chong) — yes, that Noonian-Singh — and an alternate universe James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley).
And, most importantly for fans of Star Trek: The Original Series, there's the love triangle between Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) and Spock (Ethan Peck) and T'Pring (Gia Sandhu)! At the Tribeca Film Festival's premiere event for the long-awaited Strange New Worlds Season 3, the cast and crew dished about some of those love stories and what it means to make them in the Trek-verse.

Leonard Nimoy left big shoes to fill: he created one of the most iconic characters in TV history when he starred as Spock on Star Trek: The Original Series in the 1960s. In recent years, Ethan Peck has taken on the mantle, first on Star Trek: Discovery, and now on its spin-off series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He discussed the challenges of the role in a Strange New Worlds Q&a, moderated by NPR TV Critic Eric Deggans, following the show's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Asked about the challenges of playing a character who suppresses his emotions, albeit to a lesser degree than his older, Nimoy-portrayed self, Peck answered:
"Portraying Spock's emotions is a constant source of anxiety. I think the writers do a great job of putting me, the actor, Ethan, that plays the character Spock, in really uncomfortable situations. At the same time, they're putting...

How do you go from wrassling Captain Kirk to serving Alien realness on the final frontier? In Season 1,Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced, or rather re-introduced, the Gorn, an alien race from an iconic episode of the original series that had kind of a bad rap in a good way. At the Tribeca Film Festival's Strange New Worlds Season 3 premiere, which screened the episode that concludes a Gorn-heavy cliffhanger from 2023, here's what co-creators Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers had to say about bringing the Gorn to screen again.
"My obsession with the Gorn begins [...] as a boy," Goldsman told the crowd at the Q&a, which was moderated by NPR TV Critic Eric Deggans. "Michael Chabonand I actually had a day glow Gorn poster in the commissary of the occupied Borg cube on Picard," he continued. "They painted it out in [post-production]. Is Rebel Ridge about to follow in the Emmy-winning footsteps of Quiz Lady, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and ... Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers?
The Netflix telefilm has held the No. 1 spot in Gold Derby's Best TV Movie odds all season long, despite increasingly fierce competition from the likes of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Out of My Mind, Mountainhead, Am I Ok?, and The Gorge. Why? Perhaps Rebel Ridge is still coasting off its awards juice from earlier in the season, where it claimed prizes at the Critics Choice Awards (Best TV Movie) and Image Awards (Best Actor for Aaron Pierre), and scored nominations from the Producers Guild and Writers Guild, among others.
The action thriller stars Pierre as Terry Richmond, a former Marine who has a run-in with a small town's corrupt and racist police force, including Don Johnson's Chief Sandy Burnne. The cast is rounded out by AnnaSophia Robb,...

If you're expecting the fast-paced outright absurdity of "30 Rock" or "Girls5Eva" when you queue up Tina Fey's new Netflix series "The Four Seasons," you might be caught off guard. But while this project is a bit different from a lot of Fey's small-screen work, it's still yet another worthy effort from the multi-talented "Saturday Night Live" veteran. Based on Alan Alda's 1981 movie "The Four Seasons," which was written, directed, and led by Alda alongside Carol Burnett, Rita Moreno, and Len Cariou, this Netflix miniseries of the same name reimagines the story for modern times. Fey, who created the show with her longtime collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, stars as Kate, who's married to Jack (Will Forte), and every "season," they vacation with their friends Danny (Colman Domingo), Danny's husband Claude (Marco Calvani), Nick (Steve Carell), and his wife Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver). According to FlixPatrol, the...

When “Sinners” opened to very good if not overwhelming box office numbers, the film’s performance elicited several skeptical reactions from the entertainment press. In doing so, those outlets and their industry sources might have made a case for the value of diversity, at a time when Dei efforts at media companies have come under siege by the Trump administration.
Writer-director Ryan Coogler’s period horror film has provided a welcome spring surge for Hollywood. Yet the tentative responses to its initial results missed the enthusiasm that greeted its arrival, particularly within the Black community, which both over-indexes in terms of movie attendance and is underrepresented in media jobs.
The coverage in outlets like Variety and the New York Times prompted anger across social media, and allegations of double standards when it comes to filmmakers of color. The subsequent discussion has also focused on blind spots in Hollywood about Coogler...

The White House breathed a sigh of relief for cinema enthusiasts worldwide by clarifying its position on President Donald Trump’s “100% tariff on foreign-produced films.” The White House stated that no final decisions had been made since May 5, 2025. The previous day, Trump announced the tariff on Truth Social, framing it as a measure to revive Hollywood and counter national security threats posed by foreign filmmaking.
The policy has sparked widespread debate, with industry experts and global partners questioning its feasibility and potential impact. As reported, the administration is now exploring options to implement Trump’s decision while navigating the complexities of the global film industry.

Netflix has been attempting to steer audiences away from the Yellowstone universe of Taylor Sheridan with their own epic Western series, Ransom Canyon. However, months after the series was teased as a worthy replacement for Sheridan's sprawling shows, its arrival has turned out to be a very divisive affair, with the show gaining a less-than-convincing Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, and plenty of comparisons with Sheridan’s mighty Paramount+ franchise.
The synopsis of Ransom Canyon doesn’t exactly set out to separate itself from Yellowstone. It reads, "Created, written, and executive produced by April Blair, Ransom Canyon is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country." Doesn’t sound familiar at all.

There’s been a major shakeup in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actress: The Substance star Demi Moore has jumped into our top five for the first time.

The Best Limited/Movie Actress race at the 2025 Golden Globes has had the same two frontrunners all season long: Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Cate Blanchett (“Disclaimer”). But there’s a brand new challenger in the third place position in the form of Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”). Can she pull out a victory when the 82nd annual Golden Globes air on Jan. 5, 2025, on CBS?
Foster, Blanchett, and Milioti are expected to be joined by Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Nicole Kidman (“The Perfect Couple”) in this year’s nominations lineup, per our combined odds. Foster recently won the Emmy for “True Detective: Night Country, with Vergara and Watts being co-nominees. Blanchett, Milioti, and Kidman star on new programs that will be eligible at next year’s Emmys.
“The Penguin” is HBO’s take on the classic DC Comics “Batman” villain, with Colin Farrell playing the titular role.

The term “Dad TV” has been around for years. Typically it refers to a series with a male lead that’s relatable and an expert in a particular field who overcomes some kind of challenge or unexpected hardship. Throw in a touch of humor, a sense of nostalgia, and a dog or child to protect, and you have a TV series any dad would be happy to watch. While some may argue that television has always been Dad TV, the genre has recently evolved. Thanks to strong female leads in what used to be viewed as prototypically male roles, the genre has completely evolved from Dad TV into Grown-Up TV. Eric Deggans, a TV Critic and media analyst for NPR has also noticed this evolution. Citing two particular reasons for the shift: “Women watch TV more than men do, so it’s never ...

Peacock’s crime drama “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” made its streaming premiere on September 5, 2024. The star-studded cast including Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Don Cheadle, and Samuel L. Jackson was enough to attract early buzz, but what are critics saying now that six episodes have aired, with the final two slated for October 3 and October 10? And how could positive reviews impact its chances at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards?
In a city bursting with fight night anticipation, streetwise hustler Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams (Hart) plants himself at the center of the action. As dawn breaks on a city reeling from the heist, Jd Hudson (Cheadle), a pioneering Black detective, is thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse as the body count rises.

Love it or hate it, "Sanford and Son" is one of the most groundbreaking American sitcoms of all time. The NBC series about a widowed get-rich-quick schemer (Redd Foxx) living in Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood with his adult son (Demond Wilson) was an undeniable hit during its run. It ushered in a Golden Age of Black family sitcoms thanks to dynamic performances, frank dialogue written from a working-class Black perspective, and its often uproarious scripts. It was such a ratings juggernaut that it's often credited for killing off its much more sanitized competition, "The Brady Bunch."
"It was a groundbreaking series," Eric Deggans wrote in a series retrospective for the official Emmys website, noting that "Before 'Good Times' and 'The Jeffersons' would make TV history with powerful stories focused on Black families, 'Sanford and Son' would explore the prickly relationship between a middle-aged Black man and his son.

Netflix’s “The Crown” could be set to join an exclusive Emmys club by winning the award for Best Drama Series for its final season.
The period show wrapped up late last year by exploring the death of Diana, the Princess of Wales; the premiership of Tony Blair; and the wedding between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. This sixth season saw the return of Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki asDiana. The show earned rave reviews.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) noted: “With this devastating first section of its final chapter, Netflix’s crown jewel bids farewell to an icon, and retakes its throne.”
Melanie McDonagh (Evening Standard) observed: “This season is even more plagued than the rest by us knowing what happens. The interest is in how we get there. And boy, Peter Morgan fills the gaps.

Last week on The Bachelorette, Thomas Nguyen went home.
When he first arrived on Jenn Tran’s season, we had high hopes for the Vietnamese-American retirement advisor from Georgia.
His first impression was that he was handsome and witty, and Jenn seemed to like them.
As the season began, she complained about the lack of Asian-American men in her cast, so we expected more from her connection with Thomas N.
That didn’t last long, though.
Thomas N quickly found himself at the center of the biggest drama. He couldn’t stop coming for Devin Strader and focused on his relationship with The Bachelorette lead.
So when Thomas didn’t receive a rose in Episode 5, it wasn’t a huge surprise.
Thomas Nguyen says he also faced racism from The Bachelorette viewers
After his Bachelorette exit, Thomas N shared a lengthy message for his fans on Instagram. In it, he thanked the network,...

“Sugarcane” illuminates the generational trauma inflicted on First Nations youth at the St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School in British Columbia — just one example of widespread abuse in the Canadian Indian residential school system that resulted in Pope Francis apologizing for the Catholic Church’s role in the horrors. Physical and sexual abuse were rampant at these institutions that Indigenous youth were forced to attend by the Canadian government as an exercise in forcible assimilation, and some students disappeared altogether, later to be found in unmarked graves. (The U.S. had its own version of these boarding schools as shown on “1923.”)
National Geographic picked up “Sugarcane” — the title comes from the name of the reservation where many of the Williams Lake First Nation community resides — out of Sundance. The film, directed by Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat, had won the Directing Prize in the U.S. Documentary Competition there.

The Bachelor has taken a lot of heat for its mishandling of racial issues, and the show’s producers admit they still have a lot of work to do.

After The Bachelor’s issues surrounding race were in the spotlight during the ABC reality series’ Television Critics Association presentation earlier this year, the show’s producers are now acknowledging prior missteps.
“It’s hard to say out loud, that people of color didn’t see themselves represented, that they did not see The Bachelor franchise as a safe place,” franchise executive producer Bennett Graebner told the Los Angeles Times in a story published online Wednesday. “We didn’t have a Black lead in this franchise for 15 years, and that’s inexcusable. It created a vicious cycle, and it’s taken a lot of work to get back to a place where we feel at least we’re working for the positive.”

Update: The NPR editor who penned an essay criticizing the network for what he saw as bias in its coverage of Donald Trump and a host of other issues has resigned.
Uri Berliner, who had been a senior business editor and reporter, posting his resignation letter to NPR CEO Katherine Maher on his X/Twitter account.
“I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years. I don’t support calls to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay.”
A spokesperson for the network declined to comment.

About the abuse and death of Indigenous children at a Canadian-based Indian Residential School, the docu premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival (Sff), where it picked up the U.S. documentary directing kudo. In February, National Geographic Documentary Films acquired the film.
The doc feature jury made up of producer Wren Arthur, Indiewire’s Christian Blauvelt, NPR’s Eric Deggans, and Doc NYC artistic director Jaie Laplante said in a joint statement that they selected the film for “bravely tackling the legacy of trauma from the abuse of First Nations students at the St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School in British Columbia. The Catholic Church-run school closed decades ago, but the horrors there are still deeply felt by generations across an entire community. The filmmakers do not lose sight...
