‘Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari’ Director Reveals Shocking Details You Didn’t See in Hulu Doc
Image
If you’re looking for your next true crime binge, Dani Sloane is ready to take you on a wild ride. The first-time director helms the fascinating Hulu docuseries Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari, which chronicles the years-long investigation into shady dentist Larry Rudolph and the death of his wife, Bianca Rudolph, in a safari cabin in Zambia. Rudolph was hiding a mouthful of secrets underneath his successful Pittsburgh-area dentist persona. From his longtime affair with Lori Milliron to his involvement in fraudulent practices, Rudolph was far from the clean-cut family man. During a big game hunting trip to Africa in October 2016, Bianca was found dead from a gunshot wound to her chest. Years later, Rudolph was found guilty of killing his wife and is currently serving out a life sentence. Milliron was sentenced to 17 years for her role as an accessory to the murder of Rudolph’s wife. Rudolph...

Dana Carvey on ‘SNL’ Joe Biden Impression: ‘It Was a Delicate Thing’
Image
“Saturday Night Live” legend Dana Carvey recently discussed his role as President Joe Biden on the podcast “Fly on the Wall.” Carvey, who appeared in several sketches during the 2024 election cycle, portrayed Biden distinctly different than predecessors like Jason Sudeikis and Jim Carrey.

“I knew that he was compromised mentally, I mean, it was obvious,” Carvey said (via Variety). “But it was a delicate thing in the comedy world. There were a lot of people who did not want to do anything that would kind of ding him in an awkward way.”

Carvey said, though, that his job was simply to create a version of the former president that could make everyone chuckle.

“That’s the key, if I can do Biden, if I can make Biden funny to everybody, then I am where I want to be… And to make it funny, it had to be recognizable,” he said.

Fritz Lang
Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge - Jennie Kermode - 19039
Fritz Lang
The second part of Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou’s adaptation of the epic poem, Kriemhild’s Revenge picks up directly where the first part, Siegfried, left off. The legendary hero is dead, and his wife – though it was partly her stupidity that led to it – is seriously pissed off. She blames royal advisor Hagen Tronje (Hans Adalbert Sclettow), but her brother King Gunther (Theodor Loos) won’t let her kill him – to do so would be to break a bond of honour. Engaging directly in violence, as a woman, is apparently not something she can conceive of, but she does have other options. She is still young and beautiful, and with access to Siegfried’s famous hoard of treasure, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a new husband.

Kriemhild has a very particular husband in mind: one of history’s most famous conquerors, Attila the Hun.

Molly Isn't the Real Star of 'Loot' This Character Is
Image
Apple TV+'s Loot has a great cast as it tells the story of a rich woman finding new meaning in her life after a bitter divorce. With Maya Rudolph as the lead, it's clear the comedy had the right idea from the beginning. But, while the story centers around Rudolph's Molly on a difficult road to becoming a better person amid a major life change, another character steals the show: Howard (Ron Funches). The always positive and caring coworker is easily one of the most interesting in the series. Howard adds lighthearted humor to the show that could easily get caught up in dramatic issues as Molly deals with the emotional fallout of her divorce and the company works to improve serious problems like homelessness. His good-natured hilarity plays off Molly's out-of-touch drama and is always a welcome addition.

Maya Rudolph Refuses to Think About Lorne Michaels Leaving SNL
Image
It’s become the question du jour for just about anyone with ties to SNL: Who will replace Lorne Michaels when he leaves?

While a growing number of SNL alums are denying the premise, Maya Rudolph won’t even consider the hypothetical. “I can’t do it,” she insists.

Michaels first turned heads back in 2021 when told CBS Mornings that the show’s 50th anniversary would “be a really good time to leave.” He’s since said that he hasn’t made up his mind either way.

Appearing on the red carpet at the Time100 Gala on Thursday, Rudolph was asked by Et who she’d want to replace Michaels. “I can’t think about those things,” she said. “You know how there’s things you can’t think about? I can’t do it. I can’t bring my brain to think about things like that.” She went...

Star Wars' The Ewok Adventure Has A Connection To Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
Image
"Star Wars" has always been a fairy tale at its core. The phrase "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" conjures visions of mythic adventures and imaginative settings as much as "Once upon a time" does. Yet, no entries in the franchise have held truer to this ethos than, arguably, the infamous live-action Ewok movies (and if you're surprised to hear me say that, then you clearly haven't looked at my author page before).

Now relegated to the non-canon sectors of the "Star Wars" universe, 1984's "Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure" (originally released as "The Ewok Adventure") was a made-for-tv movie following the cuddly murder teddy bears of the forest moon of Endor as they set out to reunite two young humans with their parents. Despite its limited budget, "An Ewok Adventure" is often just as visually accomplished as other theatrical '80s fantasy features thanks...

He is saddled with the task of babysitting a handful of students during the Christmas period,...

‘Rudolph’s Shiny New Year’ Is the Bouillabaisse of Holiday Strangeness to Cure Your Post-Christmas Hangover
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Then All the Cavemen (and Founding Fathers) Loved Him

The magic of a good Christmas is an unparalleled childhood experience, but it always ends with the anticlimactic holiday hangover that is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The final day of the year and the first day of the new one can be plenty of fun for adults, as they revolve around a paradoxical combination of socially sanctioned binge drinking and a renewed focus on fitness and career goals. Horror TV Shows We Miss: Christmas Episodes
Image
This episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series was Written and Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Horror for Christmas? Yes, I’m here to holly your jolly, deck your halls, and sacrifice your children to Krampus. What a merry holiday season indeed! Since our October vid focused on Halloween Specials, I figured the Spooky Christmas crossovers deserved some attention as well.

As a kid, my family did have Christmas watching traditions like most. We did Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Frosty, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Home Alone, Gremlins (Ahhhh it’s controversial), Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands…and my mom may have snuck in Black Christmas. She was and is a fan of Holiday-based Horror. Her favorite being My Bloody Valentine. All of this is totally normal. So, as you can probably guess, the tradition has continued.

The Real Meaning Of The Thirsty Movie Explained
Image
Thirsty flips the male gaze on its head, portraying a female mosquito infatuated with a man, showing him as an object of desire. The film subverts romantic comedy tropes by putting the thoughts of longing in the female mosquito's head, making it cute and relatable. Thirsty's ending spoofs classic fairy tales, with the man turning into a mosquito and being flattened, commenting on the fleeting nature of love.

Hulu's Thirsty is a short movie with a unique relationship. Thirsty, from Nicole Delaney, premiered on Hulu in 2019 and puts a twist on a classic love story. The film starts with a quote from The Little Mermaid, "I know that I shall love the world up there, and all the people who live in it," a setup for the strange fairy tale that is to follow. Thirsty follows a mosquito, with human thoughts, voiced by Maya Rudolph. The mosquito happens to...

It’s amazing to think about now, but once upon a time, there was apparently a limited amount of television programs and, consequently, a lot of extra time, especially in December, that TV programmers needed to fill. There were, of course, the annual broadcasts of Frosty and Rudolph and Charlie Brown and the Grinch, plus John Denver and the Muppets (a particular favorite in my family) but those only filled a few hours of the entire long season.

What to do? Show a network Christmas special, of course! Why not assemble a whole bunch of people who had nothing in common besides having contractual obligations to the same television network and have them sing songs and perform half-assed skits and discuss the probability of snow and the arrival of Santa on camera in order to fill up an hour of TV time?...

Big Brother Reindeer Games Crowns Its First Winner: Who Sleighed the Finale?
Image
With all due respect to Rudolph, we’ve got a new most famous reindeer of all.

Big Brother‘s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Reindeer Games spinoff came to an end on Thursday night, with Xavier Prather, Nicole Franzel, Taylor Hale and Frankie Grande poised to face off in the titular final series of competitions. And y’know, I owe Big Brother an apology: With no live feeds or house votes, I’d expected Reindeer Games to be a schedule-filling dud — but it’s been kinda fantastic! If nothing else, it’s been proof that modern-day Big Brother can indeed come up with interesting,...

Inside Laika Studios: One Frame At A Time
Image
Here at Empire, we have a tradition of sharing one article from our year at Christmas — consider it a digital stocking-filler. As 2023 rolls out, let us bring you some bonus cheer with a feature that’s close to our hearts: our visit to the Portland headquarters of stop-motion animation legends Laika. We got up close and personal with the puppets, sat down for a lengthy chat with studio boss Travis Knight, and even got an extended set visit for Laika’s next big-screen epic, Wildwood. That won’t be out until 2025 (stop-motion takes time), so in the meantime, please enjoy the next best thing…

The dogfight was going to look awesome. The boy was sure of it. Buzzing from the movies he had sat through, enthralled, on Saturday-morning TV or at cinema matinées in his farm town outside of Portland, Oregon — stop-motion classics such as the Ray Harryhausen-enhanced The...

Kelly Clarkson Falls to Her Knees in Awe After Singing Cher’s New Christmas Song
Image
Two months have passed since Cher released her floor-thumping yuletide anthem “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” and the request finally reached The Kelly Clarkson Show’s house band on Tuesday. The show’s host, who is a Christmas Queen herself, crooned and belted the neo-disco tune (in bellbottoms!) during the “Kellyoke” portion of her show. When the chorus came in, she beamed a smile brighter than Rudolph’s nose: “DJ play a Christmas song, I wanna be dancing all night long.”

She positively growled with Christmas spirit by the end of the performance,...

Kate McKinnon Kicks Off Debut as ‘SNL’ Host With Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph During Monologue
Image
Saturday Night Live‘s final episode of 2023 featured several alums of the sketch comedy show.

Not only did Kate McKinnon, who departed the show last year, return to host, but fellow alums Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph also made a special appearance during her monologue.

As McKinnon took to the Studio 8H stage, she started by saying it was weird to come back to her “old job” and do the monologue: “I don’t really like to talk in my own voice. That’s kind of why I got into this racket in the first place.”

The comedian proceeded to quip that she left SNL because “my skin was reacting poorly to the prosthetics” from all the characters she played over 10 years.

“I’ve never been myself in a monologue before,” she said, adding that she usually plays “the role of freak next to hot person” during past monologues with other hosts.

The MCU Is Finally Paying Off Iron Man's 11-Year-Old Nickname For Loki
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Loki season 2

Loki's journey from villain to potential savior showcases his growth and enduring popularity in the MCU, defying his nefarious origins. Iron Man's nickname for Loki, "Reindeer Games," was a dig at Loki's look, but also a mark of Stark's defiant spirit. But the insulting nickname gains new meaning as Loki's story has changed in the MCU.

Marvel's 2023 storytelling is finally giving Iron Man's nickname for Tom Hiddleston's Loki from The Avengers (2012) its real meaning, 11 years on. The eternally popular God of Mischief returned once more to the MCU in Loki season 2, thrown immediately into a hugely impactful mission to save the Sacred Timeline. Against all odds, the MCU timeline's first great villain could become its ultimate savior.

Just how far Loki has come since his debut in 2011's Thor is quite stunning: cast off thanks to his attempt to overthrow his brother,...

Why The Little Drummer Boy (1968) Was Taken Off TV
Image
The Little Drummer Boy, a beloved Christmas special, faced accusations of offensive content due to its villainous portrayal of Arab characters. The controversy against the special has been ongoing since the '90s, with some viewers calling out the racist portrayal and stereotypical charges against Arab people.

The Little Drummer Boy (1968) is a classic Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas special, but it was taken off some channels in the '90s after accusations of offensive content. The Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, as well as their non-yuletide related TV offerings, are widely popular and praised for their cozy animation style, heartfelt messages, and earworm-inducing songs. Most of their films contain wholly fictional characters and worlds, based on myth and folklore. Santa Claus, Jack Frost, and Rudolph figure prominently in the movies. However, the specials will occasionally depict something closer to reality.

Some of the Rankin/Bass specials feature religious and/or historical plots and characters.

10 Ways Humans Resources Is Actually Better Than Big Mouth
Image
Human Resources is actually better in comparison to its flagship series, Big Mouth, in various key ways. That's not to say Big Mouth is not amazing in its own right as one of Netflix's biggest and most awarded adult animation series, but Human Resources successfully overtakes its predecessor with several distinct characteristics. As Big Mouth's spinoff subseries, Human Resources opens up the opportunity for audiences to experience an entirely new world within the franchise.

Still, though, Human Resources's two seasons champions some of the best features of Big Mouth — the crude hilarity and "no holds barred" mentality masterfully layered overtop of very deep and compelling storylines makes Human Resources a special success that is also an ode to the original series. However, the addition to Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg's Big Mouth brainchild is, in a number of ways, just a cut above.
