Speaking to TV Line, co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal responded to the question of what other firsts fans should expect from Austin Stowell's Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs in Season 2 of NCIS: Origins after the first of his infamous elevator stops played out in the hit prequel series' first season. "One thing we haven’t shown yet, that I’m really excited for, is Gibbs’ first interrogation," Monreal noted. This fall can’t come any faster for fans of the hit NCIS spin-off, NCIS: Origins, as it makes its highly anticipated return in October. Chronicling the early career years of young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, before the events of the original series, the procedural was renewed for a second season in February before its nineteen-episode debut season came to an end on April 28. Now with Season 2 fast approaching, many are curious about what’s next for Gibbs, who, as seen in the Season 1 finale, killed Pedro Hernandez, the man responsible for his family's death.
Gibbs, portrayed by Austin Stowell in NCIS: Origins, experienced a couple of firsts in Season 1 with even more to come this fall. Speaking with TVLine, co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal has teased a significant scene involving another first for the character: a proper interrogation coming up next season, even though viewers may have seen him already conduct some questioning in previous episodes.

NCIS: Origins season 2 will introduce one of Gibbs' trademarks from the main show. The first prequel in the NCIS franchise focuses on the formative years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, in the early 1990s, as he works with an unlikely team under the guidance of Mike Franks. Franchise veteran Mark Harmon narrates, with Austin Stowell taking over the lead role.
The formula has proven successful for CBS, with NCIS: Origins season 2 set to debut at 9 Pm on Tuesday, October 14. Steadily, however, Gibbs will begin to shift away from the relative newcomer to the seasoned pro that viewers would come to recognize from Harmon's decades on NCIS. That process, in many ways, is already taking shape.

One of the longest-running shows on television is NCIS, which has spawned several spin-offs over the years. One of the most recent offshoots of the original series is its prequel, NCIS: Origins, whcih chronicles the early years of one of NCIS' most beloved characters in Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The character is played by Mark Harmon in the original series, with Austin Stowell taking on the role of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the prequel. Harmon is attached to the project as narrator and executive producer, as audiences witness the rise of Gibbs in his career. NCIS: Origins might revolve around Gibbs, but his story is not the only one being told in the prequel.

NCIS: Originsstar Caleb Foote shares the advice that franchise veteran Mak Harmon gave him. Harmon returns to narrate and executive produce the prequel, which debuted in October, and focuses on a younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) in the early 1990s. Gibbs works alongside an unlikely team, which includes Foote as Special Agent Bernard "Randy" Randolf.
Even though the prequel is focused on Gibbs, zeroing in on the pivotal NCIS character and highlighting a different side to him, NCIS: Origins season 2 is poised to continue highlighting the people who helped him along the way. Randolf, the so-called golden boy, is far from it. Though he's capable, he's also still evolving and growing.

'NCIS: Origins' Executive Producer Hints at Gibbs’ Growth From Probie to Assertive Agent in Season 2
NCIS: Origins is a prequel series which looks to set up the foundation that many of the other NCIS shows are built upon. Mark Harmon played one of NCIS' most beloved characters in Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and for a significantly long time. The character has been brought back in a younger version, with Austin Stowell taking on the role as the burgeoning career of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991 begins to take shape. As we know, Gibbs will some day lead the D.C. office, and do that very successfully as well. However, in NCIS: Origins, he has remained quiet and studious for the most part, learning the ropes as a "probie."
So when does Gibbs move from probie to assertive, confident agent? Season 1 saw a young Gibbs working under Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) and Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), alongside “Randy” Randolf (Caleb Foote) and Vera Strickland (Diany Rodriguez...

NCIS: Origins might be a prequel, but it’s still stuck in the same old loop, worshipping Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs like he’s the one and only law of the land. A recent comment from Austin Stowell, admitting that he “was scared for so many reasons,” proved that the franchise still refuses to move on from its golden boy.
Instead of carving out its own identity, Origins looks set to keep polishing Harmon’s legacy while newer characters play second fiddle. For longtime fans hoping the series would evolve, this latest soundbite might just confirm their worst fear: NCIS still lives and dies in Gibbs’ shadow.

The latest update on NCIS: Origins season 2 confirms a key change for Gibbs. The prequel to the long-running NCIS franchise debuted in October 2024, focusing on a younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) as he assembles a ragtag team in the 1990s. NCIS: Origins season 2was renewed in February.
With an NCIS: Origins cast that includes Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Diany Rodriguez, and Caleb Foote, with the narration of Mark Harmon, the prequel intentionally doesn’t perfectly align with Harmon’s version of Gibbs that viewers know from his decades on the original NCIS series. According to co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, it’s an intentional choice.
In an interview with TVLine, North opened up about how Gibbs will evolve in NCIS: Origins season 2. In the quote below, the co-showrunner and executive producer specifically talks about how Gibbs will learn to trust...

When it came to taking on the role of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, actor Austin Stowell had his work cut out for him as the star of the hit prequel series NCIS: Origins. For over two decades, Mark Harmon played the older version of the character, and Stowell still feels like he'll never get fully comfortable in the role.
Stowell and co-star Mariel Molino fielded some questions about NCIS: Origins while at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, per Deadline. Concerning playing Gibbs, Stowell shared that the role is no less nerve-wracking now than it was at the start, even with the success of the first season. While he likes the challenge as an actor, feeling he can actually "thrive" in these instances, Stowell still feels like the role belongs to Harmon.
“I was scared for so many reasons,” Stowell explained about joining the show. “There were just so many first times.

The first season of NCIS: Origins has proven to be an exciting one, with the NCIS franchise continuing its rapid expansion with an electrifying addition. The spinoff wrapped up its first season run on Monday, April 28, and amidst all the loose ends being tied up, the show threw an unexpected wrench in the works. A young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) has found himself growing ever more attached to Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) as the season progressed. While the potential for a tragic end for the duo was common knowledge, none quite expected it to come so soon. NCIS: Origins Season 1 ended with Lala possibly dead — bleeding out in an overturned car.
Lala hasn't been pronounced dead yet, so there exists the potential for a return in Season 2, which has already been renewed. Co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, were asked by Screen Rant if Molino's character was really dead.

At this point, it’s our own fault for being so surprised every time NCIS: Origins delivers another incredible episode. The series is not wasting a bit of potential from its stable of fantastic characters.
For one, what seemed like a series of coincidental episodes has become a full-blown strategy of character-centric stories. My God, does it work.
NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 16, “Bugs,” was a perfect mixture of lighthearted humor, thrilling mystery, and gripping emotional drama.
(Robert Voets/CBS)
All that was missing were a few jump scares and a romantic moment to have run the entire gamut of broadcast TV genres.
Not for nothing, but was anyone else surprised by the amount of casual comedy on this episode?
Why was everyone eating so much? You know those actors have to take a bite every time they re-do the scene, right?

"NCIS: Origins" is a change of pace for CBS' long-running procedural franchise. As demonstrated by shows like the canceled "NCIS: New Orleans" and the short-lived "NCIS: Hawaii," the saga previously set its spin-offs in the present day but changed up the locations, leaving the door open to some exciting crossovers. "Origins," on the other hand, travels back to the 1990s and focuses on the Naval Investigative Service (which was later restructured as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service) during a time when some familiar characters were still rising through the ranks -- and dealing with some serious personal drama outside of work.
The prequel aspect of the show allows "NCIS: Origins" to answer some long-lingering questions fans of the property have been asking for years, such as what actually happened to Leroy Jethro Gibbs' wife and daughter prior to "NCIS" and why he came up with some of his famous rules.

You know how some people say be careful what you wish for? Well, the NCIS: Origins writers apparently have excellent hearing and an interesting sense of humor.
Many of us viewers have been clamoring for more character development, particularly from a high-heel-wearing Nis administrative agent.
It’s doubtful anyone could have expected NCIS: Origins to become the show it has, but the series has made monumental strides toward distinguishing itself from other police procedurals.
(Erik Voake/CBS)
Namely, the show has found a way to balance episodic storytelling with pockets of character arcs that keep each episode fresh and exciting with new drama.
On the surface, it seemed like NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 14 was your run-of-the-mill spotlight episode to flesh out another supporting character, but it was so much more than that.

NCIS: Originscontinues to go beyond just being a prequel story focusing on a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) becoming the iconic NCIS character fans love. With its timeline set when the federal organization was still going by Nis, it shows the beginnings of what will eventually become NCIS. NCIS: Origins also introduces original characters like Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) and Bernard "Randy" Randolf (Caleb Foote) and gives them meaningful storylines that audiences want to invest time in. Along with following a young Gibbs, the series also features a young version of Muse Watson's Mike Franks, this time played by Kyle Schmid. In NCIS, Franks and Gibbs have a strong friendship that is always enjoyable to watch. While it seemed that Franks was the reason Gibbs joined Nis, NCIS: Origins Episode 10 shows the real reason he did and how the duo weren't the best of friends from the first time they met.

The following contains spoilers for NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 11, "Flight of Icarus."
NCIS: Origins is well into its first season, having touched on Mike Franks' backstory in Episode 11, "Flight of Icarus." Kyle Schmid, who brings the character to life on the CBS procedural drama, recently opened up about the unexpected story arc.
Speaking to TV Line, Schmid said he was unaware that Mike's past was going to be explored. "I mean, I always figured I'd come onto this [show] and I would be playing a tool to explore the evolution of Gibbs," he explained. "And yes, I am doing that in so many ways, but the fact that they recognize the opportunity to really explore Franks means so much to me as an actor, to have the opportunity to have a character grow in the eyes of the writers and the studio."

Special Agent Bernard "Randy" Randolf will be a more prominent presence in the remaining NCIS: Origins episodes when the show returns on Monday, January 27. Deadline reports that Caleb Foote has been upgraded to series regular from recurring guest star. This upgrade might not have a noticeable effect on viewers who have seen Randy show Gibbs (Austin Stowell) the ropes, appearing in most episodes. However, there is a chance Randy might get a storyline that is not tied to Gibbs, especially after Gibbs learns of the secret Randy has been carrying for months.

NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 8, "Sick as Our Secrets," announces the arrival of Randy Randolf. Audiences have never seen Randy, or actor Caleb Foote, quite like they do in this installment. The storyline adds a whole new dimension to Randy's character, making him more than the office golden boy or a source of comic relief. It's exactly what the show needs as it continues to flesh out the world around a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
"Sick as Our Secrets" tells the story of a priest who is shot and killed during confessional. When it becomes clear that he was filling in for a colleague, Randy and Gibbs are tasked with protecting the intended target -- and trying to get him to name the killer. But the episode is truly about the survivor's guilt that Randy lives with, and how that connects to his relationship with Gibbs, just two episodes before audiences...

NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 3, "Bend, Don't Break" is an example of the challenges that TV prequels have to deal with. It's an episode that reveals an important fact about Leroy Jethro Gibbs, but then also has to build a new and interesting plot around that piece of his backstory. And while it succeeds in the former, it struggles somewhat in the latter.
"Bend, Don't Break" continues Gibbs' grieving process (or lack thereof) in the wake of his family's murders. Stepping in to provide their own points of view are his father Jackson and his boss Mike Franks, but NCIS fans know that the only person whose opinion will matter is that of the young Gibbs himself. There's a story involving drug dealing and arms smuggling, but it's mostly a way to get into Gibbs' head and remind the audience how different he is.

NCIS: Origins season 1, episode 9, "Vivo o Muerto"
In NCIS: Origins episode 9, Leroy Jethro Gibbs gets dangerously close to his family's killer, with a massive reveal at the end. The prequel delivered one of its most compelling plot points yet in "Sick As Our Secretes," which revealed that Special Agent Randolph (Caleb Foote) has a secret connection to what happened to Gibbs' wife and daughter in NCIS. Randy is a new NCIS character, and tying his story back to what happened to Gibbs was a good move.
Episode 9 ties a new NCIS: Origins character's story back to Gibbs. The case in "Vivo o Muerto" brings Gibbs and Special Agent Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) to Mexico, where Gibbs' team member tells him how deeply she connects to his case. The agent has a special connection to Mexico, revealing she's half Mexican, and the agents grow closer on their journey over the border.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for NCIS: Origins season 1, episode 8, "Sick as Our Secrets."NCIS: Origins episode 8 focuses on Caleb Foote's Randy character and explains the special agent's more profound connection to Austin Stowell's Leroy Jethro Gibbs. NCIS: Origins' cast of characters includes familiar faces from NCIS, like Roma Maffia's Vera Strickland and Muse Watson's Mike Franks. Diany Rodriguez and Kyle Schmid revived the characters for the prequel series, but the show has a few new faces, too. Foote's Special Agent Benjamin "Randy" Randolf is an entirely new character to the NCIS franchise. So is the story's unadvertised muse, Mariel Molino's Lala Dominguez.
In episode 8, "Sick as our Secrets," the NCIS: Origins story finally highlights Randy, revealing the new father was initially assigned to protect Gibbs' wife and daughter. The outing establishes how Randy's baby was sick. The father was strung out and exhausted, causing him to...

Although NCIS: Origins was billed as a story focusing on Leroy Jethro Gibbs' (Austin Stowell) beginnings as a federal agent at Nis (later named NCIS), the series has devoted episodes to its other main characters. At this point in Gibbs' life, he works at Nis alongside Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) and Bernard "Randy" Randolph (Caleb Foote), with Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) leading the squad. Franks is the only other character on this team featured in NCIS, while Lala and Randy are completely new characters to the franchise. The NCIS: Origins series premiere teased a dark fate for Lala that could explain why her character is never mentioned later on in the NCIS timeline. As for Randy, very little is known about him besides that he's recently quit smoking, is married, and has a relatively newborn baby who has periodic moments of unexplained, intense crying.
