Horror Under Construction: Five Docs about the Making of Our Halloween Favorites
Old (2021)
Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.

But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

Jonathan Majors Doesn’t Testify In Domestic Violence Trial As Defense Rests; WME’s Elan Ruspoli Details Conversations With Client On Night Of Alleged Assault – Update
Image
Update, 1:58 Pm: Jonathan Majors will not be testifying in his own defense in his domestic violence trial.

After just a few hours today, the defense just rested its case in the Manhattan courtroom of Judge Michael Gaffey. With the outcome unknown until the very end, the Creed III actor was eventually not called as a witness. There had been rumors that Majors would give his perspective on what went down on March 25 between him and then girlfriend Grace Jabbari, but in the end, his team played it safe.

Majors’ WME agent Elan Ruspoli was the final defense witness, detailing conversations and correspondence he had with his client in and around the night in question.

Arrested by the NYPD that March weekend, Majors has entered a plea of not guilty in the matter. If the jury of three men and three women convict him, the Loki star could face up...

Driver in Jonathan Majors’ Domestic Violence Trial Claims Actor ‘Was Not Doing Anything’
Image
The driver who was in the car during Jonathan Majors’ alleged attack on his ex-girlfriend testified the Marvel actor “was not doing anything,” but while jumping out of a car they were traveling in, Majors attempted “to throw [his ex] in the car.”

Naveed Sarwar took the stand on Monday during the second week of the 34-year-old’s domestic violence trial in New York. Majors was arrested on March 25 following an altercation with professional dancer Grace Jabbari after she witnessed him receive a romantic text from another woman and grabbed his phone.

Jonathan Majors’ Texts Emerge As Crux Of Domestic Violence Trial; Correspondence Of Potential Past Incident Unsealed
Image
Entering the second week of Jonathan Majors domestic violence trial, the Loki actor’s phone and texts have become central to both the prosecution and defense cases.

Put bluntly, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and the defense team have very different perspectives on the alleged assault by Majors in late March on his then longtime girlfriend. However, as was evident today and has been clear even before the trial began on December 4, both sides admit whatever happened that night erupted out of Grace Jabbari seeing texts on the actor’s phone from another woman that read “I wish I were kissing you.”

Things escalated quickly after that.

Today, with Majors in court at the defense table, the driver of the car the duo were in when Jabbari saw those texts recounted her version of what went down.

“The girl became very angry,” driver Naveed Sarwar told the court Monday...

“He Knows What He’s Done”: Jonathan Majors Domestic Violence Accuser Tells Court Of ‘Loki’ Star
Image
“It’s felt like the abuse that I was in has just not ended,” said Grace Jabbari today in court of the personal aftermath of Jonathan Majors’ arrest on domestic abuse charges against her back in March.

The British National continued her testimony in Majors’ trial of what occurred on March 25 in New York City with her then boyfriend and how fraught the relationship with the Creed III star had been beforehand.

Under questioning from Manhattan District Attorney’s office and later from the defense, Jabbari may have had to pause on occasion because she became so upset over questions about another ex’s suicide and more. Yet, at the same time, the self-described “professional dancer” who dated Majors for almost two years was steely adamant about who put hands on who and why eight months ago.

“He knows what he’s done,” Jabbari told Judge Michael Gaffey and the...

Jonathan Majors Domestic Violence Accuser Tells Court How Actor “Scared” Her Early In Their Relationship
Image
Grace Jabbari on Tuesday told a Manhattan courtroom at Jonathan Majors’ domestic violence trial how she was frightened of the Loki actor even before the incident that saw him arrested in March.

With a Bible-clutching Majors sitting just a few feet away, the self-described professional dancer took the stand just after 10 a.m. Et on the second day of testimony in the case to detail how the two met in the UK in 2021 during the filming of Marvel/Disney’s Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

“We spent every day together, maybe minus a few, within the next few months,” British national Jabbari said under questioning from Assistant District Attorney Kelli Galaway. “He told me he loved me very early on.”

Reiterating a lot of what Ada Michael Perez declared when he cited Majors’ “cruel and manipulative pattern of abuse” in his opening statement Monday, Jabbari informed Judge Michael Gaffey...

Jonathan Majors Joined by Girlfriend Meagan Good During First Day of Assault Trial
Image
Jonathan Majors is wrapping up his day in court.

The 34-year-old Marvel actor held hands with girlfriend Meagan Good as he left the courthouse following Day One of his assault case on Monday (December 4) in New York City.

Jonathan was first arrested back on March 25 after alleged domestic dispute with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. He is facing charges of misdemeanor assault, aggravated harassment, and harassment. He has pleaded not guilty.

Keep reading to find out more…

In the opening statements of the trial, Prosecutor Michael Perez detailed events that led to Jonathan‘s arrest. He said that the former couple took a private car service back to their apartment after attending a party in Brooklyn, Variety reports.

Grace then saw a text message on Jonathan‘s phone from a woman named “Cleopatra” that read, “Wish I was kissing you right now.”

Jonathan Majors trial hears opening arguments
Image
Prosecution argues manipulative behaviour; star’s attorney says former girlfriend was out for revenge.

The assault and harassment trial of Jonathan Majors kicked off in Manhattan court on Monday when prosecutors claimed the Hollywood actor engaged in a pattern of abusive behaviour towards his former girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

The pair met in 2021 and according to Assistant District Attorney Michael Perez, Majors, whose credits include Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, Creed III and TV show Lovecraft Country, became increasingly hostile over time and manipulated Jabbari, a London-based dancer and movement coach.

Majors was arrested on March 25 and charged with assault and...

Jonathan Majors Assault Trial Begins: Actor’s Lawyers Claim Ex-Girlfriend Made ‘False Allegations’ Out of ‘Revenge’
Image
Opening statements began on Monday in the criminal trial against actor Jonathan Majors, who has been accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

He arrived at New York City Criminal Court around 9:30 a.m. wearing a long coat and beret. Majors entered the lower Manhattan courtroom at 10:05 a.m. with a Bible in hand. He greeted friends and family in attendance, including his new partner Meagan Good, with a kiss on the cheek.

Majors, who has appeared in blockbusters like Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Creed III,” was arrested on March 25 after an alleged domestic dispute in Manhattan with his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. The actor, who has pleaded not guilty, faces four remaining charges of reckless misdemeanor assault, intentional misdemeanor assault, aggravated harassment and harassment; another charge of strangulation has been dropped. He faces up to a year in jail if he’s convicted.

Jonathan Majors Domestic Violence Accuser Threatened Suicide, Defense Tells Trial; Actor Had Pattern Of Abuse Over Relationship, Da Says – Update
Image
(Editors’ Note: An earlier version of this story said that the Manhattan prosecutors in Jonathan Majors’ domestic violence trial said that accuser Grace Jabbari was a potential suicide risk. It was the defense that said that this morning. We regret the error and have corrected it) Jonathan Majors used cruelty and manipulation to control Grace Jabbari, and when his girlfriend of two years discovered that the acclaimed actor was cheating on her with another woman, the psychological abuse turned physical, the prosecution told a New York City jury today in opening arguments of the actor’s domestic violence trial.

Assistant Manhattan district attorney Michael Perez told jurors Monday that Majors told 911 on March 25 that Jabbari had possibly attempted suicide, which later was part of her evaluation at a local hospital that night. Doctors at Bellevue determined that she was not a suicide risk, which is one of the reasons Gabbari was released that night.

Jonathan Majors: Opening Statements Begin in Domestic Violence Trial
Image
Opening statements in Jonathan Majors’ criminal domestic violence trial began Monday morning, with prosecutors claiming that Majors used physical violence to manipulate, control, and physically hurt his former girlfriend, whom he allegedly attacked in March in New York.

However, lawyers for Majors — who has maintained his innocence since his arrest — claim that Majors’ ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari made “false accusations” in an act of “revenge” against the actor after she discovered that he received a compromising text from another woman.

Majors faces up to a year in jail if convicted on...

‘Vincent Must Die’ Review: A Witty, Grimy, Timely Parable for Our Paranoid and Persecuted Era
Image
Kathryn Bigelow’s underappreciated “Strange Days” features a line that goes something like “The issue isn’t whether you’re paranoid. The issue is whether you’re paranoid enough.” Although that film is set in 1999, it’s an aphorism that would work equally well in Stéphan Castang’s fun, violent, high-concept “Vincent Must Die,” as a punchy summation of post-pandemic — rather than pre-millennial — nervousness and malaise. Who among us has not gazed in dismay at a world that’s not just increasingly bad-tempered, but seems to hold against each one of us some focused, individual grudge? The times have doubtless always been bad, but they hit (and hit and hit) differently now, like this time, it’s personal.

Vincent is initially not paranoid enough/at all. A bit uninspired, perhaps. Low-level depressed, possibly. And carrying his inevitable thirtysomething disillusionment in a little schlub around the midriff, for sure. But not...

‘Vincent Must Die’ Review: Beckett Meets ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ In This Satirical French Horror – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Recently split from his co-worker girlfriend, Vincent (Karim Leklou) is having a bad day at the office. First, a young intern batters him over the head with a laptop, and then Yves from accounting stabs him savagely with a pen. And after a meeting with human resources, the poor guy is left with the curious feeling that, somehow, he deserved it. Even his shrink, who has a print of J.M.W. Turner’s ironic masterpiece “The Fighting Temeraire” on his wall, thinks so, planting further seeds of doubt in Vincent’s mind. “I think you’re looking for attention from those who attack you,” he decides.

Vincent’s “crime” is to make eye contact, and after a further series of interactions — notably with a middle-aged female motorist, who tries to run him down, and, crucially, his upstairs neighbor’s young children — Vincent drops everything and heads to his family’s country home.

Alan Ball at an event for Towelhead (2007)
‘Uncle Frank’: Film Review
Alan Ball at an event for Towelhead (2007)
One of the people who’s made long-form television drama arguably more interesting as a whole than its mainstream big-screen equivalent in recent years, Alan Ball has underlined his superior comfort with that format in the few theatrical features he’s made to date. His screenplay for “American Beauty,” which Sam Mendes directed, was brilliant but glib; as writer-director of 2007’s “Towelhead,” he couldn’t quite make the complicated agenda of Alicia Erian’s novel gel in two-hour form.

Set in the early ’70s, it casts the reliably deft Paul Bettany as a gay man forced to confront the Southern family to whom he’s stayed closeted — though they’ve managed to communicate tacit disapproval of his being “different” anyhow. Well-cast and gracefully handled,...
