Dylan Dreyer Appears on ‘Today’ After Announcing Split From Husband Brian Fichera
Image
Everything was business as usual for Dylan Dreyer on the Monday, July 21, episode of Today. Dreyer kicked off her week on the NBC morning show just three days after announcing she and her husband, Brian Fichera, had called it quits. The meteorologist did not address her split while filling in for Al Roker and Carson Daly on Monday and appeared not to be wearing her wedding ring. Dreyer was one of several Today personalities filling in for many absent cohosts. Weekend Today‘s Laura Jarrett joined Savannah Guthrie at the news desk in place of Craig Melvin on the show’s first two hours and later joined Dreyer and NBC News’ Savannah Sellers on the third hour of Today. (Guthrie and Willie Geist also took over for Jenna Bush Hager on Monday’s Today With Jenna & Friends.) Dreyer has been filling in for Roker since Thursday, July 17. It was...

Amazon in Talks With Brian Williams to Host Election-Night Special (Exclusive)
Image
Brian Williams may have found his next TV-news job….except it won’t be on traditional TV.

The veteran NBC News and MSNBC anchor is in late-stage discussions to host a live Election Night special on Amazon Prime Video, according to five people familiar with the matter. The aim, these people say, is to have a non-partisan discussion of that evening’s events. If the project comes to fruition, it could mark the first entry into news-related programming by one of the industry’s stand-alone streaming giants, which have largely focused on movies, scripted original series and reality programming.

The concept isn’t necessarily guaranteed to be completed, these people cautioned. Amazon declined to make executives available for comment. Through a spokesman, Williams declined to comment.

Amazon would potentially vie for attention on one of the biggest nights for traditional journalism. Many media companies see a presidential election cycle as...

NBCU News Group Launches Voting Registration Push, Backed By Top Talent (Exclusive)
Image
NBCUniversal News Group wants its viewers to vote, and in an unusual twist for a network news organization, it will help them figure out how to do so.

The NBCUniversal division, which includes NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC, is launching a PSA campaign featuring many of its top anchors, encouraging them to register to vote and take part in the electoral process.

“I think we were a little inspired by the Olympics and the reaction that we saw around the country to the recent Olympic Games in Paris, and just how much attention was drawn there, and how popular the Olympic team and their athletes were, and they really did see this renewed sense of patriotism flowing from that,” Tom Clendenin, the CMO and senior VP of marketing for the NBC News Group, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And so I just really wanted to lean into that and and celebrate...

‘Morning Joe’ Pushed on MSNBC Monday After Trump Assassination Attempt
Image
MSNBC recognized the start of the Republican National Convention by giving its flagship morning program the day off.

“Morning Joe” and its early-a.M. companion program, “Way Too Early,” were scrapped on Monday as the NBCUniversal-backed cable-news outlet focused instead on breaking-news coverage tied to this weekend’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Most of NBCUniversal’s news outlets — NBC News, MSNBC and the live-streaming service NBC News Now — have offered a single “special report” feed, all of it showing the same coverage of the violent event and its aftermath.

CNN previously reported that executives at NBCU News Group, led by chairman Cesar Conde, were sensitive to the potential effects of a guest on “Morning Joe” saying something that could offend general sensibilities. But MSNBC has been in what producers call “rolling” coverage of the Trump shooting and the investigation into it. On Monday morning, the cable...

Streaming NBC News Now Vies With Linear News Outlets in Xfinity Placement
Image
Cable subscribers typically recognize a handful of news brands, including CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel. If Comcast has its way, they may start to search more readily for one outlet that has been linked more readily to the emerging realm of broadband.

NBC News Now, the free ad-supported streaming service launched by NBC News in 2019, is set to be made a bigger a part of Xfinity, the consumer-facing cable-and-broadband service from corporate parent Comcast. NBC News Now will, starting Monday, become part of the company’s X1 platform and channel guide, alongside 20 other Fast channels. Users will see its offerings throughout various guides, including the ones pointing to live programming.

“Having an opportunity to get distribution on Xfinity was a chance that we did not want to pass up,” says Janelle Rodriguez, executive vice president of NBC News Now. “We are very seriously committed to being wherever we can...

NBCUniversal’s Film Slate Steps Into Spotlight During Company’s Upfronts Pitch
Image
The upfronts may be an annual ritual steeped in TV and streaming advertising, but NBCUniversal gave film more than a fleeting moment in the spotlight during its pitch to media buyers Monday morning.

The event at New York’s Radio City Music Hall opened with a prominent mention by TV and streaming chief Mark Lazarus of Super Mario Bros., the Universal/Illumination release that just became the first billion-dollar movie of 2023. NBC News and MSNBC correspondent Savannah Sellers followed a bit later to anchor a segment dedicated to the film output of Universal, Illumination, Focus Features and DreamWorks.

Fresh film titles have become significantly more important to the progress of Peacock, with the streaming service revealing at its NewFronts pitch earlier this month that two-thirds of its 22 million subscribers have watched a recently released film. The company revamped its pay-1 window when an output deal with HBO elapsed last year,...

Writers Strike Front and Center as NBCUniversal Kicks Off Upfronts Week
Image
If NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation Monday morning was any indication, the week ahead will be a relatively low-key affair, with plenty of pitching, with very little in the way of specifics.

There will be one constant, however: Striking writers.

Outside of Radio City Music Hall on Monday, a crowd of more than 200 writers marched in front of the venue’s various entrances, calling for a fair deal.

The strike was also present during the presentation itself, where the usual parade of actors and stars was replaced by a cavalcade of NBC News anchors, like Willie Geist and Savannah Sellers, who introduced clip packages for the company’s lineup of TV shows and films.

“If you squint a little bit, I could be Colin Jost,” Geist said, before introducing a Saturday Night Live clip reel.

But the strike was also addressed overtly, with executives resigned to navigate the upfront with the uncertainty it will create.

Gadi Schwartz’s NBC News Now Show Will Be A Rarity: A National Nightly News Show Based In Los Angeles
Image
When NBC News officially debuts Stay Tuned Now on its streaming platform tonight, it’ll be the rare national primetime news show based in Los Angeles which, because of distance and time zones, still is treated as the hinterlands from the D.C. and NYC media sphere.

Anchor Gadi Schwartz said, “For a long time, 8 o’clock rolled around and everyone’s like, ‘Oh well, we’re all done,’ and forgot that it is only 5 o’clock on the West Coast. This is a chance to reinvigorate the day’s news, and then expand the coverage with a perspective from the west looking east.”

Schwartz will be doing the NBC News Now show from the network’s broadcast studios in Universal City. The newscast is part of an expansion of Stay Tuned, the Snapchat show he’s hosted for nearly six years along with Savannah Sellers.

The show will reflect...

The Sun claimed that a follow-up was now in the works 17 years later, with the main characters all signing up.

5 Years In, NBC News Plots ‘Stay Tuned’ Expansion
Image
Click here to read the full article.

On July 19, 2017, NBC News rolled the dice on Snapchat.

Just a few months earlier, parent company NBCUniversal had invested 500 million in the tech company in conjunction with its IPO, and in turn its various divisions were figuring out how they could build a presence on the Gen Z-skewing platform.

“I still have a vivid memory of traveling to the Snap offices in Venice Beach and sitting with their team there, as they were thinking of getting into the original content business,” NBC News president Noah Oppenheim recalls in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “We at NBC News were realizing that Snap was a platform that was reaching millions of young people, and we were thinking, how could we take our trusted news brand and expose it to that emerging audience?”

The end result of those conversations was Stay Tuned, a daily news...

Streaming Wars Send TV News Outlets Searching for New Screens
Image
TV streaming wars have erupted in Hollywood and are wreaking havoc on Madison Avenue. They are even making a splash in places like Gainesville, Ga.

Wesley Lowery recently visited this town in the northeastern portion of the state, part of an effort to create a report for “60 Minutes Plus,” the new streaming-news counterpart to the venerable CBS newsmagazine. Lowery, one of a handful of correspondents hired for the Paramount Plus series, focuses on the plight of health care workers amid the coronavirus pandemic. “A lot of them haven’t had much relief,” notes the journalist, who takes a few minutes to discuss his work even though he has just about 48 hours before his story is slated to go out over the digital ether.

TV counterparts such as Lesley Stahl or Bill Whitaker usually get 12 to 13 minutes to tell their stories. Lowery says he may get as many as 20 to 30. “We are at a time when,...

Peacock to Debut Millennial-Focused News Show ‘The Overview,’ Hosted By NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz (Exclusive)
Image
Wearing a dark gray hoodie and framed by neon lights in a garage, NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz is forgoing the traditional suit and anchor’s desk as he explains to viewers the growing conversation around climate change, as exemplified by California’s shrinking Salton Sea. The graphics are snappy, the aerial footage is grand, and the explanation is conversational — that is to say, very millennial-friendly.

This is “The Overview,” Peacock’s new younger-skewing news show that will debut on NBCUniversal’s streaming service on Jan. 16, as Variety has exclusively learned. Three episodes will premiere on the service at launch, followed by weekly Saturday episodes.

Schwartz, an NBC News and MSNBC correspondent who has covered the 2020 election, immigration issues along the U.S.-Mexico border and the Olympics, leads something of a journalistic double life. He speaks both to the older demographics who watch traditional linear broadcast and cable news as...

NBC News Launches Streaming Morning Show Amid Pandemic – From a Real Studio
NBC News Now’s new streaming show “Morning News Now” co-anchor Savannah Sellers jokes that “launching a show during a global pandemic is no joke.” She’s got that right. With her and co-anchor Joe Fryer streaming from a studio at 30 Rock rather than remotely from their homes, a whole new set of challenges (and advantages) have arisen. “Like many things over the last six months, our launch was pushed back. [It was] originally meant to launch in April,” Sellers told TheWrap ahead of the show’s Oct. 12 launch. “Instead, most of the team was hired and trained remotely. We’ve gotten to know our colleagues over Zoom and have been having all our planning meetings over phone calls, video chats, etc.” Streaming from a studio again has made these two journalists very happy, indeed. “We’re so excited to be anchoring from an actual studio,” Fryer said. “Both of us have...

NBC News Sets Launch of Morning Show on 24-Hour Streaming Service, After Six-Month Covid Delay
Image
NBC News Now, the 24/7 streaming service from NBC News, was going to expand its live coverage to the East Coast’s morning hours in April. Then the coronavirus hit.

Six months later, the four-hour weekday “Morning News Now” is now ready to roll, starting Oct. 12 — and not a minute too soon, as the already-clamorous news cycle hits a new crescendo. The show will be anchored by Savannah Sellers (above left), NBC News correspondent and co-host of NBC’s “Stay Tuned” series on Snapchat, and NBC News correspondent Joe Fryer (above right). It’s set to air 7-11 a.m. Et Monday-Friday.

But NBC has a morning show: the long-running “Today” program, which also has a companion online service that streams around-the-clock. Janelle Rodriguez, senior VP of editorial for NBC News who oversees NBC News Now, argued that “Morning News Now” won’t cannibalize “Today” viewership (or vice versa).

TV News Hopes NBC’s Democrat Debate Spurs More Than a Political Windfall
NBC News is gearing up to cover two sprawling Democratic debates. But the trappings around them may remind viewers of another network staple: “Sunday Night Football.”

How To Watch Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding Online
Prince Harry
Let’s assume that you, like me, were not among the 600 guests to receive an invitation to attend the wedding of Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Nor will we be among the thousands invited to stand on the grounds of Windsor Castle to watch the wedding party enter and leave. Thankfully, the Internet has us covered.

Here are some ways to watch the royal wedding, which is scheduled for 7 Am Et/zero dark ugly Pt on Saturday.

YouTube

The Royal Family will live-stream the festivities on the Royal Family’s official YouTube channel — that’s the feed Deadline will use Saturday morning. The coverage will follow the wedding procession, the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, and wedding day happenings along the way. The footage will be available afterwards so people can watch at their convenience, whether they’re from Blighty or anywhere else on the globe.
