Being home for a new, fresh take on the legacy of one of the most iconic children’s shows of the 21st century is no small feat, but Colombia was ready to take on the challenge when it came to Paramount+’s “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado.”
Shot in Colombia over 53 days between July and September of last year, with production services provided by leading local company Tis Studios, Alberto Belli’s “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado” employed 401 Colombians as part of the crew. The film also had Colombian actors as key members of the cast, including Maria Cecilia Botero as Abuela, Oscar Rodriguez as Tio Nico, Valentina Acosta as Maria Elena and George Slebi as Papa Cole.

In recent years, the theatre world has witnessed a massive influx of Broadway shows based on films. Stage adaptations of Hollywood hits like Back to the Future, Moulin Rouge, and Beetlejuice have been dominating Broadway, both in terms of ticket sales and critical reception. Even lesser-known works, like the 2007 Israeli film, The Bands Visit, have been brought to the stage, and even gone on to win the coveted Tony Award for Best Musical. Now, with the massive success of these adaptations, audiences must begin to wonder what films may be getting reborn on the stage next.
Of course, not every major motion picture can be seamlessly translated to a different medium. Big-budget films that rely on complex visual effects and numerous locations are often impossible to properly convey on stage. However, films that rely on only a handful of characters within a relatively contained setting typically have excellent potential when...

Talk about a Renaissance! Laverne Cox received the ultimate compliment on Monday night when she attended the U.S. Open to cheer Serena Williams on.
The 50-year-old “Inventing Anna” star was seated in the stands at the Usta Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, wearing a face mask. That paired with a black sheer top, brown leather pants, and hoop earrings made several people mistake Laverne for Beyoncé online and in broadcasts from the match.
Coincidentally, Laverne shared a video of herself getting ready set to Beyoncé’s song “Pure/Honey,” ahead of the match. Once the comparisons were made, the Emmy-nominated actress gushed about the moment online.

Over the course of 59 animated entries, Walt Disney Animation Studios has come a long way, not just when it comes to the technology used to weave their classic tales, but in overall ability to simply tell a story. The 60th entry in the Disney animated canon, Byron Howard, Jared Bush, and Charise Castro Smith’s lavish “Encanto” feels like , even if its story ultimately tries too hard to wrap up that nuance in a very tidy bow.
Mirabel Madrigal (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) comes from an exceptional family — quite literally. A magic candle has blessed several generations of Madrigals with special powers, from super-strength to the ability to talk with animals. Unfortunately for Mirabel, she’s the only one without any said powers, causing strife between her and her Abuela Alma (Maria Cecilia Botero). When Mirabel starts to believe the magic in the candle is fading, she becomes determined to...

“Encanto” is a lively, lovely, lushly enveloping digitally animated musical fairy tale. It’s the 60th animated feature produced by the Walt Disney company, and to borrow a phrase from the old Disney TV series, it’s set in a wonderful world of color — a rapturously imagined, rainbow-gorgeous village tucked inside the misty green mountains of Colombia, where the members of the Madrigal family lead a magical existence. The ornate designer tiles of La Casa Madrigal, their idyllic mansion, turn into a synchronized army of domestic helpers, and each family member is endowed with his or her own superhuman gift. Actually, one of them has no gift. That would be the heroine, Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz), who is just like us — which means, within her family, that she’s the odd girl out.

There is no doubting Lin Manuel Miranda’s musical creativity, which soared to new heights after his stage musical Hamilton blew away all those that saw it. Again based on his own stage musical and directed by Crazy Rich Asians’ John M Chu, his latest creation In The Heights transforms the streets of Washington Heights in Manhattan into a vibrant Latinx community with nothing but dreams, optimism, and a feel-good party atmosphere.
There are no airs and graces or a complex, convoluted storyline with this one; it is a simple ode to the family community spirit amongst the Latin community. This community has often been portrayed as gangland thugs or street corner hoes, here they are finally being given an all-singing, all-dancing positive role. Despite the raw deal they are constantly given and the overwhleming adversity of their lives, they still keep on dreaming for bigger and better lives with...
