Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprise their True Detective roles in a new ad calling for more television and film productions to shoot in Texas.
Per Variety, the new ad shot by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolato, McConaughey and Harrelson discuss the potential benefits of bringing Hollywood productions to Texas while driving on the highway, similar to the many conversations Rust Cohle and Marty Hart would have during the first season of the show. A few of the lines featured in the ad are clever twists on memorable quotes and monologues from the series, such as McConaughey telling Harrelson, "“Hollywood is a flat circle, Wood," which is a slight tweak on Rust Cohle's, "Time is a flat circle" from season one. McConaughey would also deliver a monologue in the ad, which also amends a scene from the show's first season, saying, "This industry is like somebody’s memory of an industry,...

Crime dramas typically do everything they can to throw the audience off the trail of the story's mystery, and sometimes supernatural or surreal elements come into play because of this. Making the audience question what's real and what's imagined is a great way to build unreliable narrators and a sense of dread throughout the episodes. Sometimes, these aspects of the plot can get so outlandish that the series becomes almost absurdist. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing since this distinguishes the show from the competition. There is no shortage of supernatural series and crime dramas out there.
There are many underrated recent detective TV shows that use these elements to make their stories unforgettable since a surreal tone sets apart a thriller series. TV is flooded with true crime dramas and docuseries that terrify the audience through realism. However, utilizing surrealism to communicate the horrors that people are capable...

While “True Detective” celebrated its fourth installment at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, showrunner Issa López revealed she’s already deep into writing Season 5.
“I’m deep, deep, deep in the writing and just in the smack of it,” López told TheWrap on the Emmys red carpet at the Peacock Theater. “It’s very strange to be submerged in another universe and then come back here and be talking again about Ennis.”
Even still, López, who created, wrote and directed all six episodes of “True Detective: Night Country,” noted Season 5 will exist in the “same universe” as Season 4, which made several references to the HBO drama series’ inaugural season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, including some supernatural elements.
“The references are going to be more to Season 4,” López said of Season 5, adding that supernatural elements will still be present. “It’s the same universe, and the magical realism is my brand,...

Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. The event included insightful conversations with Indigenous and Native creators, talent, and industry executives such as “Reservation Dogs” showrunner Sterlin Harjo, Bird Runningwater from “Fancy Dance,” Kali Reis from “True Detective” (who was joined by co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and showrunner Issa López) and many more. The program highlighted Indigenous storytelling and the achievements of Indigenous communities in film and TV and even included a surprise message from director James Cameron.
The event also explored how the industry is faring in creating opportunities for Indigenous talent on and off-screen. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indigenous Native Americans becoming U.S. citizens, as President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924, inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I.

HBO’s “True Detective” took over television in 2014 with Woody Harrelson and Mathew Matthew McConaughey as two gritty detectives struggling to solve a seemingly impossible string of supernatural murders. Ten years and three seasons later, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis have taken over for “True Detective: Night Country,” ushering in the most-viewed season of the series to date.
As part of the Variety Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, Variety‘s deputy awards and features editor Jenelle Riley sat down with Reis, co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and creator Issa López to talk about how they brought the latest season of “True Detective” to life.

Kali Reis discusses the ambiguous ending of True Detective: Night Country and Navarro's fate. Audiences can interpret Navarro's fate in multiple ways due to the open-ended nature of the finale. HBO’s officially renewed True Detective for season five. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, was the most-watched season overall, drawing in 12.7 million viewers. It was also the first season that focused on women in the leading roles, and the first with Issa López in charge as writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer.
Showrunner Issa López will return in the same capacity for season five, and has just signed a new multiyear overall deal with HBO. The deal means López will create new content, including season five, for HBO and Max.
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” stated Issa López. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true.

There's more True Detective where Night Country came from.
Per HBO, True Detective has been officially renewed for Season 5. This follows the success of the show's fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, which was developed by Issa López, marking the first season of the series not to include the creative involvement of original creator Nic Pizzolatto. López will be returning to develop Season 5 of True Detective as well. The renewal also comes as part of a new overall deal López signed to create exclusive content for HBO and its streaming platform, Max. Season 5 will be one of the first projects developed as a part of the deal.

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.

We’re getting down to the wire with just two episodes left of HBO’s hit series True Detective: Night Country, and season four has been such a mystery. However, with episode five – the penultimate episode – we’re finally starting to get some answers.
The action in episode five begins on December 31st – the 14th day of night.
The episode opens with a sobering moment as skeletal remains are being cremated. The bones are those of State Trooper Evangeline Navarro’s sister, Julia, who committed suicide in episode four. As her ashes are being prepared, Navarro (Kali Reis) is there silently watching.
Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) interviews Otis Heiss, who she mistakenly believed was Raymond Clark at the end of episode four. She asks if he knew Clark before their recent encounter and Otis says he didn’t,...

The fourth season of True Detective dubbed True Detective: Night Country, has been keeping audiences guessing over these last four weeks with its intriguing blend of supernatural thriller and procedural detective story. Now, two-thirds of the way through the season, it seems as if all the pieces have been set, and the mystery is going to unravel.
Showrunner and director Issa López, along with her collaborators, have done an excellent job so far of fleshing out the northern Alaskan town of Ennis, where, for one week a year, the sun doesn't rise.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he’s not creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show. He has made his lack of involvement with the new season very clear on social media, where he even went so far as to refer to one element of the new episodes as “stupid”. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season. To find out what Lopez thought of Pizzolatto’s comments, Vulture reached out to her – and did get a response.
Screen caps of the comments Pizzolatto has made can be found on reddit. In response to a fan who said “I really hope Matthew (McConaughey) had enough respect for...

With just a few episodes left in True Detective: Night Country, we seem to be no closer to finding out what happened to the researchers at the Tsalal Research Facility. One thing is for certain: Night Country is unlike any of the previous three seasons of the Emmy Award-winning series.
Episode three ended with two jaw-dropping scenes. In one, Dr. Anders Lund sat up in his hospital bed and, in a demonic voice, said, “Hello, Evangeline. Your mother says hello. She’s waiting for you.” In the other, a cell phone video shows Annie saying, “My name is Annie Kowtok. If anything happens to me…” before the phone is ripped away and she screams.
As episode four opens, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) can’t sleep, so she watches the video of Annie Kowtok again.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for True Detective: Night Country Season 4, Episode 4, “Part 4.”] The cold dark days of True Detective: Night Country‘s ongoing story grow a tad more frigid in the latest installment as Christmas Eve arrives for Detective Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Detective Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis). While the holiday season may brighten most spirits, things are dimming for this duo as they deal with personal struggles and the ongoing mystery behind Annie K’s (Nivi Pedersen) murder after uncovering a horrifying video at the end of Episode 3. As Danvers sets her sights on the case, she continues to drift further apart from her stepdaughter Leah (Isabella Star Lablanc). Although viewers see a bit of softness from Liz as she checks on Leah in her sleep, their contentious relationship boils over when the teen vandalizes the Silver Sky Mines office building, spray painting the word “Murderers,” across the entrance. “True Detective: Night Country” reached 2.7 million viewers with its third episode on Sunday night, which notably aired in competition with the NFC championship game. This marks a 5% increase compared to the previous episode.
The season has now seen two consecutive weeks of growth, as Episode 2’s 2.6 million viewers on Jan. 22 marked a 28% improvement from the premiere’s 2 million viewers. (These numbers come from a combination of Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel as well as streams on Max through each episode’s first night of availability). Additionally, these episodes continue to grow on Max: Episode 1 jumped from 2 million to 7.5 million viewers after one first week and now sits at 10.7 million viewers, while one week of streaming availability for Episode 2 boosted it from 2.6 million to 8 million viewers.
Thus far, “True Detective: Night Country” is outpacing “Succession” Season 4 and “The White Lotus” Season 2, HBO’s most recent comparable titles.

Viewership of “True Detective: Night Country” saw a 28% increase with its newest installment on Sunday night. After the season premiered with 2 million viewers last week, Episode 2 reached 2.6 million viewers.
These numbers, which combine Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO with first-party data from HBO regarding streams on Max through each episode’s first night, represent success for “Night Country,” which is the fourth installment of “True Detective.” For comparison, the majorly acclaimed fourth season of “Succession” premiered in with 2.3 million viewers — while enjoying the benefit of concluding its third season more recently while “True Detective” has been off the air for five years —then dipped down to 2 million with its second episode. Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” which more closely matches “True Detective’s” anthology style, premiered with 1.5 million viewers, and while data is unavailable regarding Episode 2, Episode 6 set a then-series high of 2.3 million viewers, which “Night Country” has already surpassed.

True Detective made a strong return to HBO on Sunday night.
The premiere episode of Night Country delivered about 2M viewers across Max and linear telecasts, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
This is a pretty strong showing for True Detective, which returned for its fourth installment five years after the Season 3 debut. It’s not entirely accurate to compare Night Country‘s performance to Season 3, considering it was released before the launch of Max.
To help put the numbers into perspective, The White Lotus Season 2 debuted with 1.5M cross-platform viewers, while Euphoria managed 2.4M for its Season 2 debut. The final season of Succession came out of the gate with 2.3M for its premiere episode.

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. Set in the remote town of Ennis, Alaska, Night Country follows former partners Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote facility. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.
True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. Looking back, 2014 was truly a different time: Obama was in office, skinny jeans still reigned supreme and “True Detective” established itself with an unabashed emphasis on masculinity. Three years earlier, Ryan Murphy had revived the anthology series with “American Horror Story,” but it took the imprimatur of HBO, massive movie stars and a “serious” genre like crime to give the format real prestige. In pairing Matthew McConaughey with Woody Harrelson on a journey through the bayou, creator Nic Pizzolatto elevated some of that genre’s clichés and left others intact — including a marginal presence for women, crowded into bit roles as wives and villains to make room for portentous monologues and four-minute tracking shots.

Pet Sematary has been sequelized, rebooted, and now with the arrival of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines it has a prequel. Adapting Stephen King’s works for the screen is a risky enough proposition, creating new stories based on them even more so as anyone whose seen a few Children of the Corn sequels or reboots can attest. King himself however seems to be happy with this film and tweeted:
“In the book, this is the story Jud Crandall tells Louis Creed to try and dissuade him from using the Pet Sematary,” wrote King. “The screenplay takes a few liberties, but it’s a fine story. David Duchovny is excellent. The secret, as always, is caring about the characters.”

"True Detective" has been a rough beast. The first season felt like it came out of nowhere, and proceeded to blow our minds in the process. Arriving at the height of The McConaissance, when Matthew McConaughey stopped making awful rom-coms and reminded us all he was a great actor, the first season, created by Nic Pizzolatto and helmed entirely by Cary Joji Fukunaga, was the very definition of must-see TV. A strange, funny, existential bit of pulp, the series featured McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as mismatched cops looking into ritualistic murders. That first season occasionally hinted at the supernatural while never fully embracing it, and despite its bleaker-than-bleak nature, ended on a surprisingly hopeful note. After all, that season concluded with McConaughey's miserable Rust Cohle commenting: "Well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light's winning."

Premiering almost exactly 10 years after the launch of the first season and almost exactly five years after the Mahershala Ali-centric third season — time being a flat circle, as the now-punchline goes — True Detective: Night Country is perched precariously in conversation with, and in contrast to, the show created by and steered by Nic Pizzolatto.
Created by Issa López, who wrote or co-wrote most of the season and directed all six episodes, Night Country is, in some ways, a throwback to the first season, bringing back the uncomfortable intersection of true crime narrative and supernatural undertones. The season also includes direct nods to imagery and dialogue from the first season — generally unnecessary citations that feel like a sop to the Pizzolatto-worshipping corner of the fandom, since otherwise Night Country is at odds with the previous seasons in terms of theme and overall perspective.

True Detective has had a long and storied history on the small screen.
After a critically adored freshman season, the series returned with a dud of a follow-up that seemingly ended the franchise.
Almost four years later, we got True Detective Season 3 -- a marked improvement on the sophomore season.
Now, we're getting True Detective: Night Country, a new chapter in the anthology series.
Below, we've rounded up everything we know about True Detective: Night Country.
What is True Detective Night Country About?
We have a synopsis from HBO:
When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace.
The White Lotus Season 3: Everything We Know
To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
