Per Variety, the new ad shot by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolato, McConaughey and Harrelson discuss the potential benefits of bringing Hollywood productions to Texas while driving on the highway, similar to the many conversations Rust Cohle and Marty Hart would have during the first season of the show. A few of the lines featured in the ad are clever twists on memorable quotes and monologues from the series, such as McConaughey telling Harrelson, "“Hollywood is a flat circle, Wood," which is a slight tweak on Rust Cohle's, "Time is a flat circle" from season one. While “True Detective” celebrated its fourth installment at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, showrunner Issa López revealed she’s already deep into writing Season 5.

“I’m deep, deep, deep in the writing and just in the smack of it,” López told TheWrap on the Emmys red carpet at the Peacock Theater. “It’s very strange to be submerged in another universe and then come back here and be talking again about Ennis.”

Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. HBO’s officially renewed True Detective for season five. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, was the most-watched season overall, drawing in 12.7 million viewers. It was also the first season that focused on women in the leading roles, and the first with Issa López in charge as writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer.

Showrunner Issa López will return in the same capacity for season five, and has just signed a new multiyear overall deal with HBO. The deal means López will create new content, including season five, for HBO and Max.

“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” stated Issa López. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true.

We’re getting down to the wire with just two episodes left of HBO’s hit series True Detective: Night Country, and season four has been such a mystery. However, with episode five – the penultimate episode – we’re finally starting to get some answers.

The action in episode five begins on December 31st – the 14th day of night.

The episode opens with a sobering moment as skeletal remains are being cremated. The bones are those of State Trooper Evangeline Navarro’s sister, Julia, who committed suicide in episode four. As her ashes are being prepared, Navarro (Kali Reis) is there silently watching.

The fourth season of True Detective dubbed True Detective: Night Country, has been keeping audiences guessing over these last four weeks with its intriguing blend of supernatural thriller and procedural detective story. Now, two-thirds of the way through the season, it seems as if all the pieces have been set, and the mystery is going to unravel.

Showrunner and director Issa López, along with her collaborators, have done an excellent job so far of fleshing out the northern Alaskan town of Ennis, where, for one week a year, the sun doesn't rise.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he’s not creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show. He has made his lack of involvement with the new season very clear on social media, where he even went so far as to refer to one element of the new episodes as “stupid”. With just a few episodes left in True Detective: Night Country, we seem to be no closer to finding out what happened to the researchers at the Tsalal Research Facility. One thing is for certain: Night Country is unlike any of the previous three seasons of the Emmy Award-winning series.

Episode three ended with two jaw-dropping scenes. In one, Dr. Anders Lund sat up in his hospital bed and, in a demonic voice, said, “Hello, Evangeline. Your mother says hello. She’s waiting for you.” In the other, a cell phone video shows Annie saying, “My name is Annie Kowtok. If anything happens to me…” before the phone is ripped away and she screams.

For comparison, the second season of “The White Lotus” premiered to 1.5 million viewers across platforms, while the first episode of “Euphoria” Season 2 delivered 2.4 million cross platform viewers. Those seasons of “The White Lotus” and “Euphoria” ultimately tallied around 15.5 million and 19.5 million viewers per episode, respectively.

The premiere episode of Night Country delivered about 2M viewers across Max and linear telecasts, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.

This is a pretty strong showing for True Detective, which returned for its fourth installment five years after the Season 3 debut. It’s not entirely accurate to compare Night Country‘s performance to Season 3, considering it was released before the launch of Max.

To help put the numbers into perspective, The White Lotus Season 2 debuted with 1.5M cross-platform viewers, while Euphoria managed 2.4M for its Season 2 debut. The final season of Succession came out of the gate with 2.3M for its premiere episode.

Looking back, 2014 was truly a different time: Obama was in office, skinny jeans still reigned supreme and “True Detective” established itself with an unabashed emphasis on masculinity. Pet Sematary has been sequelized, rebooted, and now with the arrival of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines it has a prequel. Adapting Stephen King’s works for the screen is a risky enough proposition, creating new stories based on them even more so as anyone whose seen a few Children of the Corn sequels or reboots can attest. King himself however seems to be happy with this film and tweeted:

“In the book, this is the story Jud Crandall tells Louis Creed to try and dissuade him from using the Pet Sematary,” wrote King. “The screenplay takes a few liberties, but it’s a fine story. David Duchovny is excellent. The secret, as always, is caring about the characters.”

"True Detective" has been a rough beast. The first season felt like it came out of nowhere, and proceeded to blow our minds in the process. Arriving at the height of The McConaissance, when Matthew McConaughey stopped making awful rom-coms and reminded us all he was a great actor, the first season, created by Nic Pizzolatto and helmed entirely by Cary Joji Fukunaga, was the very definition of must-see TV. A strange, funny, existential bit of pulp, the series featured McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as mismatched cops looking into ritualistic murders. That first season occasionally hinted at the supernatural while never fully embracing it, and despite its bleaker-than-bleak nature, ended on a surprisingly hopeful note. After all, that season concluded with McConaughey's miserable Rust Cohle commenting: "Well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light's winning."

Premiering almost exactly 10 years after the launch of the first season and almost exactly five years after the Mahershala Ali-centric third season — time being a flat circle, as the now-punchline goes — True Detective: Night Country is perched precariously in conversation with, and in contrast to, the show created by and steered by Nic Pizzolatto.

Created by Issa López, who wrote or co-wrote most of the season and directed all six episodes, Night Country is, in some ways, a throwback to the first season, bringing back the uncomfortable intersection of true crime narrative and supernatural undertones.
