‘Lead Belly’ Review – Examination of Childhood Trauma Suffers from Non-Linear Storytelling [Panic Fest ’25]
Image
Sometimes children will learn unhealthy coping mechanisms from their parents, especially when the parents are struggling with mental health issues, substance abuse, or abusive relationships themselves, leading to a vicious cycle with lasting impact on emotional well-being. Lead Belly presents a moving narrative around childhood trauma, which successfully uses supernatural themes to convey its message, but the nonlinear storytelling doesn’t always work in the film’s favor.

Written, directed, edited, and scored by Stephen King Simmons (The Parker Sessions), Lead Belly is a coming-of-age story set in 1997 about two brothers attempting to cope with childhood trauma and their parents’ divorce. Kyle (Bastian Carrasco Betemps) and his older brother Marcus (Liam Foehl) have become estranged from their father Michael (Danny James) due in large part to his alcoholism and how it has affected their family, especially their mother Sara (Emily Ashby). Michael drinks and passes out, which leads to a near tragedy,...

The Blue Diamond's Barbara Crampton On Bold Indie Short, Supporting Indie Filmmakers & Hysteria! Cameo
Image
Barbara Crampton is returning to the surreal horror world she does so well in The Blue Diamond. Crampton is one of the most iconic names in the horror genre after making her breakout debut in Brian de Palma's Body Double, with some of her most notable projects being in such H.P. Lovecraft adaptations as Re-Animator, From Beyond and Suitable Flesh, as well as acclaimed indie hits You're Next, We Are Still Here and Jakob's Wife, among others. The star has also found frequent success in the soap opera genre, starring in Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless and Guiding Light, among others.

Crampton stars in The Blue Diamond as Jacqueline Diamond, the founder and CEO of a lifestyle brand largely inspired by skiing and snowing, having amassed a dedicated following through her company. The short film primarily centers on Jacqueline's estranged daughter, Alison, who reluctantly...

’10/31 Part III’ Review
Image
Stars: Jennifer Nangle, James Morris, Emily Ashby, Derric Hyde, Rose Spencer, Taylor Rhoades, Yasmin Qudah, Brucellious Morris Jr., Justin P. Martin, Rosaria Eraso | Written by Michael Ballif, Jacob Perrett, Melissa Sapienza, Todd Martin, Zane Hershberger | Directed by Michael Ballif, Jacob Perrett, Brad Twigg, Zane Hershberger

It’s taken a few more years than expected but 10/31 Part III has finally arrived and it wastes no time getting down to business with several faux trailers that range from old-school Eurosleaze, “The Slaughter”, to “Night of the Halloweenies” a parody of Night of the Demons, zombies lay siege to a radio station in “Radio Tower Road” and a pair of slashers “Candy Killer” and my favourite, the 70s grindhouse styled “A Stranger’s Treat”.

As with the original and the first sequel, 10/31 Part III begins with Jennifer Nangle appearing in her Malvolia persona and giving us an introduction to what we’re about to see.
