'Blade Runner 2099' Producer Offers Disappointing Release Update
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss in The Matrix (1999)
Science fiction is a genre that can leave its audience in awe or can induce existential dread. While Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix is well known to make the audience question their reality, Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner made fans ponder over what makes us really human. While there are no definitive answers, Denis Villeneuve elaborates on the themes of Scott’s film in his follow up Blade Runner 2049. Now, fans of the franchise are eagerly waiting for the Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099 to take forward the world built by the two directors. But it sounds like they’ll have to wait some more.

Blade Runner 2099 series is set fifty years after the events of the Villeneuve-directed film that starred Ryan Gosling. And while the movies had male protagonists, Harrison Ford and Gosling, respectively, the series will feature Euphoria star Hunter Schafer along with Oscar-winner...

Black Mirror Has An Addictive Companion Video Game You Likely Never Knew Existed
Image
Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror" has been darkly interrogating our relationship with media and technology since 2011, and since we're more into our screens than ever, it stands to reason that this show, which is essentially "The Twilight Zone" for our times, is more disturbingly relevant than ever.

A veteran gamer who got his start as a reviewer for the magazine PC Zone, Brooker takes the video game medium seriously. He's far from a scold as far as gaming is concerned, but he does have piercing insight into the ways in which people can become unhealthily obsessed with these virtual environments. We can grow irritated when a game throws a particularly difficult mission or seemingly unbeatable boss level in front of us, yet we get so attached to avatars or characters that it feels like a death in the family when/if they expire.

It's possible that no film or television...

Image
The Black Mirror: Plaything creator revealed that the new sci-fi short's ending meant exactly what fans had suspected it did.

Plaything is the fourth episode of the beloved Netflix series' seventh season and stars A-listers Lewis Gribben and Will Poulter.

The short film, which takes place in the same Black Mirror universe as the hit streaming spin-off movie Bandersnatch, follows a video game programmer, Colin Ritman, and a journalist reviewing it, Cameron Walker, as they become consumed by the digital creatures created by Ritman and his team.

All 34 ‘Black Mirror’ episodes ranked, including ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ and ‘Eulogy’
Image
Every new season of Black Mirror launches a feverish debate over which episode was the best. Emmy voters gave three consecutive Best TV Movie awards to "San Junipero" (2017), "USS Callister" (2018), and "Bandersnatch" (2019), but how does the entire fandom rate the best and worst installments? We've consulted the cumulative IMDb scores for all seasons and have come up with the definitive ranking of Black Mirror episodes. Can you guess the No. 1 choice?

Season 7 was released in April 2025 and brought the total number of episodes and specials to 34. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series began on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix (and becoming a worldwide phenomenon) in 2016. The show took a four-year break after Season 5, thanks in part to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, but that just gave people even more time to relive their favorite episodes from the beginning.

One Of Black Mirror's Most Popular Episodes Could Get A Proper Sequel
Image
The seventh season of "Black Mirror" just dropped on Netflix on April 10, and it included something new for Charlie Brooker's anthology TV series: a true sequel to a previous installment. 2017's "USS Callister" was enormously popular when it premiered in season 4, so it makes sense that in season 7, we got "USS Callister: Into Infinity," a feature-length episode following up on that story. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, though, Brooker actually planned for another "Black Mirror" story to get a sequel first.

"I did work out the storyline for a completely different sequel for 'Bandersnatch,' which was going to be called 'Banderstruck,' but I never got to do it," Brooker revealed, specifying that he would have written a sequel to the show's innovative interactive special that came out in 2018. In that special, we, for lack of a better term, "control" main character Stefan Butler (Fionn Whitehead...

The ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 episodes ranked, from worst to first
Image
Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

As for the other new episodes,...

‘Black Mirror’ Star Will Poulter Talks Returning as Colin After ‘Bandersnatch’: ‘We Can Exist Multiple Times’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Black Mirror” Season 7, Episode 4, “Plaything.”

While most “Black Mirror” guest stars don’t get the chance to return to the Netflix series, Will Poulter was among the few stars to get a second call from creator Charlie Brooker, who asked him to reprise his “Bandersnatch” role as video game creator Colin Ritman for Season 7’s “Plaything.”

“[Charlie] alluded to me that because of Colin’s time-traveling qualities, and … the suggestion that he kind of existed in different time periods, there was a chance that he could visit again,” Poulter told TheWrap. “I was very, very grateful when I got that call — it was only a few months before we ended up shooting … I had an absolute blast doing it.”

Though Colin comes to several untimely deaths across “Bandersnatch’s” multiple endings, “Plaything” sees Colin in the ’90s as he introduces a new video game to a journalist named Cameron,...

Black Mirror Season 7's Plaything Gives Bandersnatch Only Half A Sequel
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 7.

When news broke that Netflix's long-running dystopia series "Black Mirror" would be revisiting the world of "Bandersnatch," speculation was rampant. Would the follow-up episode take on the same choose-your-own-adventure format as the groundbreaking interactive film did seven years ago? Would it choose one of that story's multiple endings as the "true" ending and continue on from that point, or would it embrace the butterfly effect and its many branched paths? The truth, it turns out, is a lot more mundane.

The episode in question, "Plaything," opens by speedrunning a police encounter much as a typical crime procedural would. Viewers see Cameron Walker (former "Doctor Who" star Peter Capaldi) — an erratic older man with long, gray hair and a meek attitude — get picked up for shoplifting a bottle of wine in a convenience store. Cops use some handy dandy future tech to...

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Episode 4: ‘Plaything’ – Recap and Ending Explained
Image
‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 rolls on with Episode 4, ‘Plaything,’ a story that digs into the grunge of the 1990s and drags it into a freaky near-future mess. This one’s got Charlie Brooker’s fingerprints all over it—tech gone wrong, human obsession, and a vibe that leaves you uneasy. We’re following Cameron, a guy whose life gets tangled up in a video game that’s more than just pixels on a screen. It’s got that ‘Black Mirror’ knack for making you question what’s real and what’s worth caring about.

Peter Capaldi takes the lead as an older Cameron, with Lewis Gribben playing his younger self, bouncing between two timelines that collide in a wild way. Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry pop in too, bringing back their ‘Bandersnatch’ roles as Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur. It’s a trip down memory lane with a dark twist, and...

Black Mirror: Plaything Review — Peter Capaldi Shines in an Otherwise Disappointing Episode
Image
Like many anthology shows — Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story and Mike White’s The White Lotus come to mind — Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is starting to become less standalone and more interconnected in nature. Serving as a pseudo-sequel to the interactive film Bandersnatch, season 7’s Plaything shows a lot of promise, but its short runtime holds it back from ever delivering on its potential.

Black Mirror: Plaything Review

Plaything follows a former journalist over two periods: a near future in which he is being interrogated as a murder suspect, and the 1990s when he is experimenting with a mysterious, unreleased video game. This is one of the more twist-centric episodes this season, with its success riding or dying based on the audience’s reception to a reveal that happens about two-thirds through, and that moment, unfortunately, does not tie the episode together quite as well as its creators clearly hoped.

How Netflix Turned a Terrifying ‘Black Mirror’ Plot Device Into a Real-Life Video Game
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the Black Mirror season seven episode, “Plaything.”]

For the first time in Black Mirror’s seven seasons on Netflix, viewers of an episode can play one of its terrifying plot points on their phones as the episode unfolds.

In “Plaything” — one of six new episodes from creator Charlie Brooker now streaming — a video game journalist (played by both Lewis Gribben and Peter Capaldi) becomes obsessed with a game called Thronglets developed by the legendary developer Colin Ritman, marking a return for actor Will Poulter. (Yes, the episode is something of a sequel to the 2018 Black Mirror interactive film Bandersnatch.) That obsession ultimately leads to a dystopian future, as the game (or rather the “throng” that exists within the game) seeks more power and to break free from the constraints of their PC home.

Netflix, of course, is in the video game business now. And Black Mirror viewers can now play Thronglets for themselves,...

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Review: Excellent Cast and Dazzling Sequels Fuel Rich New Batch of Episodes
Image
“You’re so pretty when you’re alive.”

In an era of appointment television where series like “The White Lotus” and “Reacher” seem to occupy space to the tune of millions of viewers each week, Netflix is sticking with its bingeable model with the drop of another must-see title. “Black Mirror,” the British television series famous for its convoluted anthology episode premises akin to the modern version of “The Twilight Zone,” returns for Season 7 with a new concept that feels familiar. An A-list cast in almost every episode, the series presents sequels to a couple of its highest-rated plots to date.

The result works wonders with a talented cast and storylines that continue to impress, while leaving room for other installments to entertain with original commentary on humanity’s reliance on evolving technology — often to heartwrenching resolutions.

Black Mirror 'Plaything' Ending Explained: Peter Capaldi, Lewis Gribben
Image
What if your sentient Tamagotchi persuaded you to merge as one, erasing negative emotions like anger and jealousy to create a more evolved version of you? That’s the goal of the adorable artificial life at the center of the Black Mirror episode “Plaything,” which is now streaming — along with the rest of Season 7 — on Netflix.

In the present day, with unkempt hair and sneakers that are falling apart, Cameron Walker (Peter Capaldi) doesn’t look like much of a threat when he’s arrested for stealing liquor. During his interrogation with Detective Chief Inspector Kano (James Nelson-Joyce), however, we learn there’s a lot more to the introverted computer nerd.

Back in 1994, younger Cameron (Lewis Gribben) is a gaming journalist who receives a special invite from genius programmer Colin Ritman (Will Poulter) to demo a top-secret project for Tuckersoft. Colin has created sentient lifeforms called Thronglets and disguised them...

Black Mirror season 7 release date, time, what to expect
Image
Charlie Brooker was on to something when he created Black Mirror, a British anthology series that explores the dark side of technology and its impact on modern society. While initially a Channel 4 series, the show gained international recognition after Netflix picked it up, allowing Brooker to expand his vision even further. Six seasons have been released so far, with a highly anticipated seventh season set to be released on the streaming platform soon. We're talking about a batch of new episodes available to stream tomorrow!

Unlike the previous season, which had five episodes, Black Mirror season 7 will feature one additional episode, bringing the total to six episodes. This marks the first time since the fourth season that the show has featured this many episodes. Brooker has referred to this installment as having a touch of "Og Black Mirror." Personally, that sounds like something I'd be really excited to watch,...

Black Mirror Season 7
Image
Streaming on: Netflix

Episodes viewed: 6 of 6

In 2023, writer Charlie Brooker decided to do something different with the sixth season of Black Mirror, his long-running, darkly dystopian tech-noir anthology series. Worried about repeating himself, he played with the format of the series, in order to avoid simply being, as he put it, “the show about consciousness being uploaded into a little disc”. Now back with a seventh season, he has perhaps made peace with that reductive description: this is a very Black Mirror-y run of episodes, packed with several consciousness-upload stories, plenty of familiar-but-different ground covered again. It suggests a new sense of confidence — a comfort in its own identity.

That can be seen in the show’s first sequel episode, ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’, a hugely enjoyable feature-length follow-up to the 2017 Star Trek riff ‘USS Callister’. Still following the spaceship of digital clones, the gang (led by Cristin Milioti...

Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’-Inspired New Tech “Leaks” Online Ahead of Season 7
Image
Breaking news: Charlie Brooker is developing a new piece of tech that will redefine reality.

The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday received in their inbox the ultimate Easter egg to promote season seven: A leaked internal and confidential email from Tckr Systems Communications preparing the Black Mirror creator for the launch of a new product called Nubbin.

Black Mirror viewers will recognize the Nubbin as the headpiece that many characters across six (and soon to be seven) seasons of the Netflix dystopian series place on their temple before they head into some sort of immersive escapade with their virtual consciousness.

(If you haven’t guessed by now, this is not a real product announcement. But it is a real Easter egg… so, let’s keep going!)

Included in the “leaked” email is a live website introducing the implantable technology, while also making users aware of its risks. [Writers note: Anyone interested in Nubbin should check out the FAQs section, and then go watch season six episode “Joan Is Awful” before engaging with this product.]

'Blade Runner 2099' Shouldn't Copy the Original Sci-Fi Movie
Image
Prime Video has developed a strange reputation over the last few years for expanding beloved sci-fi/fantasy franchises. Following up on the success of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Prime Video will be turning its attention to the world of Blade Runner, as filming recently wrapped on the upcoming series, Blade Runner 2099. She’s set to play Olwen, a Replicant nearing the end of her life, and she’ll be joined by an ensemble cast including Hunter Schafer, Lewis Gribben, and Tom Burke (most...
