A 95% Rotten Tomatoes HBO Show Gets an Exciting Season 2 Update 3 Years Later
Image
Mare of Easttown was released as a limited series on HBO in 2021. Three years later, creator Brad Ingelsby says he is open to developing new episodes.

"We're always open to revisiting Mare," Ingelsby told reporters during an HBO press conference via Deadline. "I would welcome the chance if we could craft the story. Mare's journey was so emotional, and it was hard to come up with an emotional story. It's hard to come up with one that could compete with losing a son and having to confront that. There are a lot of plotlines we could explore [but] I want to give Mare some space before we build up another emotional trauma. That's hard to jump back into."

Jean Smarts New TV Success Is A Great Reminder To Watch Her 3-Year-Old HBO Drama With 95% On Rt
Image
At the 2024 Emmy Awards, Jean Smart walked away with the trophy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series thanks to her career-best performance as comedian Deborah Vance in Hacks. Of course, the Emmy-winning Hacks is far from the only Smart-starring HBO series that's worth a watch, especially considering the actor appeared in both Watchmen and Mare of Easttown. After rising to prominence for her leading role in Designing Women (19861991), the actor went on to win an impressive six Emmys. Smart earned all of these accolades for her comedic chops in Frasier, Samantha Who?, and Hacks.

Still, Smart has also given her fair share of standout dramatic performances. The acclaimed performer's other Emmy-nominated roles have all been TV dramas, ranging from The District and Harry's Law to Fargo and 24. More recently, Smart made waves in the aforementioned HBO limited series Watchmen and Mare of Easttown, proving that she has...

See Jean Smart's Sweet Date Night With Her Son Forrest at the 2022 SAG Awards
Jean Smart
Jean Smart brought one very special guest to the 2022 SAG Awards: her youngest child, Forrest. The 70-year-old actress walked the red carpet at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. with the teen on Sunday, Feb. 27. It was certainly a big night for Jean. Not only was she nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series category for her work in Mare of Easttown—in which she played Helen Fahey, the mother to Kate Winslet's character Detective Mare Sheehan—but she also took home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her role of Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance in Hacks. And while...

How to watch SAG Awards
Image
The 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards have arrived. After last year’s truncated ceremony, which was pre-taped due to the severity of the coronavirus pandemic last winter, the 28th annual SAG Awards will once again take place live from Los Angeles with major celebrities and nominees in attendance at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. Here’s how to watch the 2022 SAG Awards online and on television.

How to watch the SAG Awards

There are a number of ways to watch the 2022 SAG Awards online. As usual, the SAG Awards will air on linear television on both TNT and TBS, beginning at 8 p.m. Et. Cable subscribers can watch the SAG Awards online at those network’s websites by using their cable provider login. SAG Awards nominee profile: Jean Smart (‘Mare of Easttown’) looks to make history
Image
Last September, the limited series “Mare of Easttown” entered the 73rd Primetime Emmys ceremony with seven major nominations, including one for star Kate Winslet and three for supporting players Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson, and Jean Smart. In the end, Nicholson triumphed over Smart and joined Winslet and Peters in the winners’ circle. Now, the Screen Actors Guild has given Smart another chance at victory by nominating her for the guild’s Best TV Movie/Mini Actress award. Nicholson is out of the picture in this case, but, since SAG does not separate lead and supporting TV performances, Smart now faces the challenge of defeating Winslet.

Aside from Winslet, Smart’s competitors in this category are Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). Coolidge is a total SAG newcomer, while Erivo and Qualley each have one 2020 film bid under their belts for “Harriet” (individual) and...

For ‘Mare of Easttown’ Makeup Artist Debi Young, Authenticity Is All About the Details
Image
At some point makeup artist and designer Debi Young began talking about eyebrows and it felt as though a new window into film and television had been thrown open for me.

Young, Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (Muahs) Award-nominated for her work on HBO’s lauded limited series “Mare of Easttown,” had been describing her process for styling makeup for period pieces. She explained that if she’s doing a film set in the 1930s, she doesn’t want every woman sporting a 1930s eyebrow.

“Most people carry their looks. Whatever they think looks good on them, they don’t change every year with the trend,” Young said. “If somebody thought they looked good in the 1920s with a skinny brow, I like to pop one or two of those in [the design] because a person will carry that look from the 1920s into the 1930s.”

What she described is something...

With ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ ineligible, what the heck will win Best Limited Series at Critics Choice Awards?
Image
Last year, the Critics Choice Awards honored “The Queen’s Gambit” with major victories for Best Limited Series and Best Limited Actress (Anya Taylor-Joy). It later won a whopping 11 trophies at the Emmy Awards, though Taylor-Joy was bested by Kate Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”) in the actress race. Now that Netflix’s chess-themed miniseries is ineligible, what will take its place in the winner’s circle at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards? It’s time for some fresh blood.

The eight nominees for Best Limited Series are “Mare of Easttown” (HBO), “Maid” (Netflix), “WandaVision” (Disney+), “Dopesick” (Hulu), “The Underground Railroad” (Amazon), “Midnight Mass” (Netflix), “It’s a Sin” (HBO Max) and “Dr. Death” (Peacock).

Jean Smart is looking to rack up her first — yes, first — individual SAG Award nomination(s)
Image
It’s no lie: Jean Smart has never been nominated for a solo Screen Actors Guild Award. Despite being an 11-time Emmy nominee and four-time champ, she reaped her to date only SAG Award nom as a member of the “24” ensemble in 2007. But after bagging the comedy actress award for “Hacks” and a limited series/TV movie supporting actress bid for “Mare of Easttown” at the Emmys, she is poised to finally be recognized individually by her peers, with not just one but two solo nominations.

You might be wondering why it’s taken so long for the stars to seemingly align in Smart’s favor at the SAG Awards given her success at the Emmys. While she’s earned all her Emmy nominations within the SAG Awards’ period of existence, bear in mind that before “Hacks,” she had never been shortlisted for a lead performance. Of her nine pre-2021 bids,...

Jean Smart Wins Lead Actress in a Comedy Emmy for ‘Hacks,’ Her Fourth Overall
Image
The Jeanaissance is alive and well. She may not like the term to describe her latest career peak, but there’s no denying that legendary actress Jean Smart is on a roll, having won her fourth Emmy Award on Sunday night.

Smart was named outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her critically acclaimed role as stand-up Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s “Hacks.” This is her first lead acting win following victories in the supporting comedy actress (for “Samantha Who?”) and guest comedy actress (for “Frasier”) categories. She was also nominated last year for supporting actress in a limited series or movie for another HBO show, “Watchmen.”

Smart received a standing ovation as she accepted the award, dedicating it to her late husband, Richard Gilliland.

“Before I say anything else, I have to acknowledge my late husband who passed away six months yesterday,” Smart said. “I would not be here without him,...

Jean Smart Is A Stand-Up Star In ‘Hacks’: “I’m Prejudiced Against People Who Don’t Have A Sense Of Humor”
Image
“There isn’t light without dark, there isn’t comedy without tragedy,” Jean Smart says, sitting back in her pink paisley print chair. She’s talking about the vast variety of roles on her resume. Lately, in Hacks, she’s Deborah Vance – A Joan Rivers-esque Vegas stand-up comic with a hosting sideline on QVC, and in Mare of Easttown, another HBO show, she’s Helen Fahey, the feisty, big-hearted mom to Kate Winslet’s beleaguered blue collar cop.

But Hacks is where she really gets to showcase her ability to balance the comedic with the tragic; belly laughs with perfectly-pitched pathos; wise-cracking warmth with wounded loneliness. As Deborah, Smart walks that line so elegantly, so subtly, we never notice her making the switch.

“Someone asked me recently, ‘How do you switch from comedy to drama sometimes in the same character in the same show?’” she says. “And I guess...
