The off-Broadway musical Heathers is now officially open and an extension has been announced!

The musical’s stars Lorna Courtney, Casey Likes, McKenzie Kurtz, Elizabeth Teeter, and Olivia Hardy hit the red carpet at the opening night gala performance on Monday (June 30) at New World Stages in New York City.

Also spotted on the carpet was co-star Kerry Butler, who is a Broadway veteran best known for shows like Hairspray, Xanadu, and Beetlejuice.

The off-Broadway revival of the fan-favorite musical was originally scheduled to have a limited run through September 28, but it was announced on opening night that the run has been extended through January 25, 2026.

Exclusive: The upcoming Off Broadway revival of Heathers The Musical has announced the casting of its title trio: McKenzie Kurtz (Broadway’s Frozen and The Heart of Rock and Roll) will play Heather Chandler; Olivia Hardy (Broadway’s Kimberly Akimbo) will play Heather Duke; and Elizabeth Teeter (Broadway’s Beetlejuice) will play Heather McNamara.

Kurtz, Hardy and Teeter join the previously announced Lorna Courtney (Broadway’s & Juliet), who will star as Veronica Sawyer, and Casey Likes (Broadway’s Back to the Future), who has been cast as J.D.

Additional casting will be announced next week.

Ryder, fresh off "Beetlejuice," played another death-obsessed teenager. Unlike gothic outsider Lydia Deetz, though, Veronica Sawyer from "Heathers" is in the in-crowd. She hangs out with Westerburg High School's trio of mean girls, all named Heather, but feels disillusioned. So her new bad boy lover J.D. (Christian Slater) convinces her to pull a lethal prank on queen bee Heather Chandler (Kim Walker).

Village Roadshow Pictures has teamed with Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment for the U.K. release of the live-captured version of hit West End production “Heathers: The Musical.”

The live-event style distribution strategy marks a first for both companies and will see a series of events premiering at more than 320 screens across the U.K. and Ireland from March 28 through May 6. In addition to screening the musical, each event will feature a bonus 10-minute special titled “Behind the Scenes at The Other Palace,” named for the London venue where the musical was filmed in 2022 as a Roku original for the North American market. Sky VIP also ran a preview screening on March 21 in 30 Vue cinemas across the U.K.

Similar licensing strategies in other international markets are expected to follow.

The list of musical adaptations is getting dangerously long and after a few painful disappointments, even theater kids are starting to question reality. Alas, the past few years have made it very clear that at some point, we'll have to accept that the movie-to-musical pipeline (not to be confused with the movie-to-musical-to-movie pipeline) is here to stay. And even though I still shudder every time I remember that "Shrek The Musical" exists, it's always thrilling to learn that another musical is on the way. This time the title in question is "Heathers: The Musical." An adaptation of the 1988 film, "Heathers," this high-energy black comedy spent months on London's West End where it was filmed and will now stream as a Roku Original. Sometimes for better and, other times for worse, "Heathers" has seen quite the resurgence over the past decade.

In “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” a dysfunctional group of rich kids who have long outgrown each other hole up in one of their parents’ mansions during a hurricane. If that synopsis makes the film seem difficult to categorize, it’s by design. “When [writer Sarah DeLappe] and I started to work together, we both felt that the biggest mistake you can make with a group film – and especially the slasher, or whatever genre you want to call this – is to have all the cliches,” director Halina Reijn said in an interview with TheWrap.

Roku is set to release a live capture of the West End stage show “Heathers: The Musical” as a Roku Original special on the Roku Channel. The special will be available to stream in the U.S. on Friday, Sept. 16.

While most movies reflect the time period in which they're made, teen movies in particular have a lot to say about society. The 1989 film Heathers is much darker than most in the genre. It tells the story of Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), who is in a group of popular girls all named Heather. When attempting to teach Heather Chandler (Kim Patton) a lesson, Veronica and J.D. (Christian Slater) end up killing her.

Like other teen movies that don't get that much attention at first, Heathers became a cult classic, and while fans love its depiction of high school life and how it talks about subjects that other movies don't, there are definitely some problems with it. While much of Heathers is still relevant today, other parts bring up some issues.

This time around, it featured the Broadway musical “Heathers,” which is a more heartfelt and navel-gazing adaptation of the movie. Even though the gothic “Riverdale” would seem like a good fit for this homicidal high school tale, the show managed to fail in honoring both the film and stage versions of “Heathers.”

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the showrunner of the CW teen dramedy, revealed on Twitter on Thursday that the “Riverdale” kids will be taking on “Heathers: The Musical” in the show’s next musical episode.

Airing Wednesday, March 20, the episode will, confusingly, see Josie (Ashleigh Murray) take on the lead role of Veronica Sawyer, with Veronica (Camila Mendes) playing Heather McNamara. Betty (Lili Reinhart) will step into Shannen Doherty’s shoes as head mean girl Heather Duke, and bad boy Sweet Pea (Jordan Connor) will play J.D. Once again, Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) will direct.
