Winona Ryder’s 95% Rated Movie Inspired TV Series That Anti-Trump Supporters Don’t Want You To Watch
Image
Winona Ryder’s cult classic Heathers may’ve earned a 95% rating and a permanent spot in dark comedy history, but its TV reboot stirred up a whole different kind of buzz, and not the good kind. Inspired by the original’s razor-sharp take on teen chaos, the series tried to modernize the madness, but ended up getting slammed for its controversial characters and themes.

Anti-Trump supporters weren’t having it, calling out the show for what they saw as tone-deaf commentary. The result was delays, backlash, and a quiet burial. It’s a reboot that had all the right ingredients except the cultural timing.

15 Box Office Bombs That Became Cult Classics
Image
Some of the greatest movies in cinema history began as a box office disappointment. There are several factors that go into whether films become blockbuster hits or box office bombs. Film history has proved that some of these factors have worked against great films, resulting in a poor box office performance.

These factors could vary, such as poor marketing efforts, as seen in the case of The Iron Giant, a badly made theatrical cut like the Blade Runner theatrical cut, or unfavorable circumstances like in the case of Donnie Darko.

Fight Club was one of the box office bombs that went on to become a cult classic | Credits: 20th Century Fox

However, these films were lucky because the audiences gave them a second chance, and they are now considered cult classics. From Alfred Hitchcock’s classic to IMDb’s top-rated film, here are the films that were initially ruled out...

Winona Ryder Didn't Know One Of Her Best Films Flopped At The Box Office
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

A movie doesn't have to be successful to be a classic. Take "Heathers" — written by Daniel Waters, directed by Michael Lehmann, starring Winona Ryder.

Ryder, fresh off "Beetlejuice," played another death-obsessed teenager. Unlike gothic outsider Lydia Deetz, though, Veronica Sawyer from "Heathers" is in the in-crowd. She hangs out with Westerburg High School's trio of mean girls, all named Heather, but feels disillusioned. So her new bad boy lover J.D. (Christian Slater) convinces her to pull a lethal prank on queen bee Heather Chandler (Kim Walker).

"Heathers" is the template for other biting black comedy teen movies, from "Mean Girls" to "Jennifer's Body." It even inspired a "Heathers" musical! But it only made $1.1 million on a $3 million budget.

Entertainment Weekly's oral history of "Heathers" (published in 2014 for its 25th anniversary) has some explanations for why it flopped. Distributor New World Pictures...

Heathers True Spiritual Successor Was This 28-Year-Old Supernatural Movie, Not Clueless
Image
Heathers is conventionally put in a lineage with Clueless and Mean Girls as female-driven teen comedies that define the movies respective generations. This easy comparison overlooks the dark tone of Heathers, making The Craft a more fitting companion. While Heathers and Clueless are both about popularity and high school cliques, putting them in dialogue just for sharing a setting is too simplistic.

Heathers starred Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, a girl trying to join the Heathers popular crew. By contrast, The Craft is about four girls who are not just unpopular but actively targeted. Robin Tunney led the cast of The Craft as Sarah Bailey, who has a similar arc with magic as Veronica had with popularity: first she sees it as a tool but then realizes it can be a weapon. Every Clueless character gets their happy ending, but not everyone escapes the end of The Craft much like Heathers.

The Character Winona Ryder Was Urged Not To Play Became One Of Her Most Iconic
Image
During recent interviews for the theatrical release of Beetlejuice 2, Winona Ryder opened up about some of her past film roles, including Heathers, admitting that she almost turned down one of the most iconic roles of her career. The role of Veronica Sawyer in Heathers is one of Winona Ryder's most notable, but she almost didn't play the part. When she was offered the role back in the late 1980s, Winona's agent 'begged' her not to take the role due to its dark nature, claiming that it would ruin her career before it had even begun.

Since the film's initial release in 1989, it has become a cult classic in its own right. Although Heathers didn't perform well at the box office, it has since become a lot more popular in recent years, showcasing the range of Winona Ryder's acting abilities. Heathers was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2010 and has...

Winona Ryder Recalls Agent Begged Her Not To Take ‘Heathers’ Role
Image
Although the film catapulted Winona Ryder to cult queen status, not everyone was onboard with her role in 1988’s Heathers.

The Academy Award nominee recalled that her agent begged on bended knee for her not to take the part of Veronica Sawyer in the “very subversive” teen dark comedy from writer Daniel Waters and director Michael Lehmann.

Recalling the audition process, Ryder said in a video for Harper’s Bazaar, “I wasn’t considered pretty enough, so I went across the street to the Beverly Center, to the Macy’s counter. They had them do a makeover on me. Then I went back and I was like, ‘Please!’

“But my agent at the time literally got down on her knees, she’s like, ‘Please, you’re gonna destroy any chance of a career,'” recounted Ryder.

“But I actually did lose a job right when it was coming out. I...

Winona Ryder's Best Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Ranking a certain actor of director's work by their Rotten Tomatoes scores often throws up some surprises. For instance, Sean Connery's finest film, according to the site, is "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," and Hugh Jackman's actual best performance in 2013's "Prisoners" is ranked eighth on his Rotten Tomatoes page. Oh, and Tim Burton's highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes isn't even a movie he directed. In other words, the ubiquitous Tomatometer is not always the most accurate guide, especially when it comes to comparing an individual's Rt scores in a straightforward ranking.

Sometimes, though, taking a look at an actor's filmography on the review aggregator can highlight some of their lesser known roles — roles which are actually worthy of being at the top of the Rt rankings. Take frequent Burton collaborator Winona Ryder, for example, who first worked with the director on 1988's "Beetlejuice," in which...

Stars: Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, Peter Dawson | Written by Daniel Waters | Directed by Michael Lehmann

Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) is the leader of the “Heathers”, a clique of mean girls running their Ohio high school. “They didn’t think I was pretty enough”: Winona Ryder’s Claim to Fame Role in ‘Beetlejuice’ Almost Cost Her Another Job in a Cult-classic Dark Comedy
Image
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice opened up a whole lot of opportunities for Winona Ryder in Hollywood. However, the film almost cost her another critically acclaimed role in her career. Lydia Deetz was a weird character and Ryder had to ditch her looks to transform into the character. When she met with the makers of Heathers in the new look, they did not initially want her in the role.

She was eventually able to convince them and star as Veronica Sawyer in the film. Beetlejuice was a critical and commercial success, even winning an Academy Award for Best Makeup. While Heathers failed at the box office, it went on to become a cult-classic dark comedy film.

‘Heathers’ – 1980s Satire Is Sharper Than Ever 35 Years Later
Image
“When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be”

The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch.

‘Heathers’ Exposes the Dark Heart of High School [The Lady Killers]
Michael Lehmann at an event for Because I Said So (2007)
“Are we going to prom or to hell?”

What’s the most important decision a teenager can make? Is it what to do with 5 million dollars two days before aliens blow up the planet? Is it what kind of corn nuts make the best pre-fraternity party snack? According to Michael Lehmann’s dark cult comedy Heathers, the most important decision a teenager can make is whether or not to die by suicide. But what if it’s not a decision at all? What if a hot killer couple blasts through the halls of their suburban high school dressing up their murders as altruistic revenge? The Lady Killers conclude Bad Romance month by putting on their red power scrunchies and fucking each other gently with chainsaws on a very special episode covering one of the hottest killer couples of all time.

Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) may be so “very,” but she...

Horror has a long history of these roguish young lovers, some so bad they commit cold-blooded murder. But they’re not all monsters.

Every once in a while, a cinematic boyfriend manages to be attractive, kind, and non-murderous, all while supporting his girlfriend as she runs away from the film’s true villain. Rospo Pallenberg presents us with two appealing boyfriends in the 1989 slasher Cutting Class. Brian (Donovan Leitch Jr....

15 Actors With Impressive Movie And TV Careers
Image
Actors typically find fame in either film or television, but some of the world’s greatest performers have impressive careers in both movies and TV. Kelsey Grammer is globally recognizable as Dr. Frasier Crane, one of the most iconic TV characters of all time, but his movie career never took off. Similarly, Matt Damon is one of the most famous movie stars on the planet, but his most prominent TV role is a four-episode arc as Liz Lemon’s boyfriend, Carol Burnett, on 30 Rock. Actors with major roles in both film and TV are rare.

It’s difficult enough for actors to achieve success in one medium, so the actors who manage to become big stars in both are in a league of their own. Olivia Colman made the transition from a sitcom supporting player to an Oscar-winning movie star. John Cena brought new depth and humanity to one...

It's Showtime! Beetlejuice 2: New & Returning Cast Guide
Image
Beetlejuice 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s classic horror comedy, with an exciting cast playing both new and returning characters. Coming several decades after the 1988 release of the original Beetlejuice, the follow-up revisits many of the central characters as their lives are again turned upside down by the titular "ghost with the most." While a few of the original actors are back for Beetlejuice 2, the sequel also keeps things fresh by introducing some recognizable additions to the ensemble. There are also unconfirmed rumors that Burton’s long-time collaborator Johnny Depp will appear in Beetlejuice 2.

A second Beetlejuice movie has been in the works for a long time, with a rumored sequel project titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian marking the first attempt all the way back in 1990. The detailed plot of Beetlejuice 2 hasn’t been revealed yet, but a brief first look at the cast is...

Which Winona Ryder Character Are You, Based On Your Zodiac Sign?
Image
With Stranger Things set to end after five seasons, the timing for Winona Rider to reclaim her unforgettable role as Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice 2 is near perfect for sparking nostalgia in longtime fans. Now that studio Plan B has begun early development of the film and Ryder is confirmed to return, all that is left to anticipate is the possible reprisal of Michael Keaton’s titular bio-exercist.

Though Ryder has acknowledged that she knows little about the future blockbuster, it's safe to assume that she will continue to grace audiences with her immeasurable talent, especially given her amazing performance as Joyce Byers. Knowing this, which of her many distinctly memorable character portrayals correspond with each zodiac sign?

Aries – Rina (Lucas)

Even at a young age, Winona Ryder pulls off an impressive performance as Rina in the movie Lucas, a coming-of-age movie about a nerdy and awkward teenage boy...

The Daily Stream: Heathers: The Musical Is Finally Available On Streaming? How Very!
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Production: "Heathers: The Musical"

Where You Can Stream It: The Roku Channel

The Pitch: In 1988, director Michael Lehmann, armed with a deeply satirical script by Daniel Waters and tour de force performances by Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, changed the teen movie genre forever. The film was "Heathers," the edgy, snappy, pitch-black response to the John Hughes and Brat Pack era of teen cinema.

"Heathers" is considered one of the most iconic coming-of-age films ever made, but was a box office flop at the time of release. And yet, thanks to home video rentals and endlessly quotable lines, "Heathers" is one of the strongest examples of a cult film crossing the threshold into bonafide classic territory. That film is...

Heathers: The Musical Trailer: The Broadway Sensation Comes To Roku
Image
The list of musical adaptations is getting dangerously long and after a few painful disappointments, even theater kids are starting to question reality. Alas, the past few years have made it very clear that at some point, we'll have to accept that the movie-to-musical pipeline (not to be confused with the movie-to-musical-to-movie pipeline) is here to stay. And even though I still shudder every time I remember that "Shrek The Musical" exists, it's always thrilling to learn that another musical is on the way. This time the title in question is "Heathers: The Musical." An adaptation of the 1988 film, "Heathers," this high-energy black comedy spent months on London's West End where it was filmed and will now stream as a Roku Original. Starting September 16, you can check out "Heathers: The Musical" anywhere that The Roku Channel streams.

Sometimes for better and, other times for worse, "Heathers" has seen quite the resurgence over the past decade.

Pete Davidson, Lee Pace, Chase Sui Wonders, Amandla Stenberg, Rachel Sennott, Maria Bakalova, and Myha'la in Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
7 Movies That Inspired ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies,’ According to Director Halina Reijn
Pete Davidson, Lee Pace, Chase Sui Wonders, Amandla Stenberg, Rachel Sennott, Maria Bakalova, and Myha'la in Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
In “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” a dysfunctional group of rich kids who have long outgrown each other hole up in one of their parents’ mansions during a hurricane. When they’ve had enough of getting crossed and making TikToks, they turn to an old pastime: a Mafia-like game called “Bodies Bodies Bodies” that always ends in tears and hurt feelings. This time, though, the stakes aren’t just emotional: after the power cuts out, actual bodies begin to drop. Inside one of these chronically-online narcissists lurks a killer – who could it be?

If that synopsis makes the film seem difficult to categorize, it’s by design. “When [writer Sarah DeLappe] and I started to work together, we both felt that the biggest mistake you can make with a group film – and especially the slasher, or whatever genre you want to call this – is to have all the cliches,” director Halina Reijn said in an interview with TheWrap.

"Heathers: The Musical" on The Roku Channel
"Heathers: The Musical", streams exclusively September 16, 2022 on The Roku Channel:

"...the first day of school, 1989, and 'Veronica Sawyer' is frustrated with the hellish competitive social hierarchy at 'Westerburg High School', where nerds and underclassmen are pushed around by brutish, idiot jocks like 'Ram Sweeney' and 'Kurt Kelly'.

"After trying to defend her best friend, the cheerful, overweight 'Martha Dunnstock' aka 'Martha Dumptruck', Veronica longs for the days when life was simple and everyone was friends.

"She wishes desperately to be above the drama, but there is only one elite clique who can do that: the 'Heathers', the three most beautiful, most popular girls in school, including weak-willed head cheerleader 'Heather McNamara', bulimic, personality-lacking yearbook committee chair 'Heather Duke' and 'mythic bitch queen' of the school, 'Heather Chandler'.

"When Veronica uses her talents as a forger to get the Heathers out of detention,...

Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Heathers (1989)
The Planned Heathers Sequel We'll Sadly Never See
Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Heathers (1989)
Hey, Dan Waters! What's your damage? We want a "Heathers" sequel! If you're one of the many fans of this '80s cult classic, you may have spent a lot of time agonizing over not just which plaid blazer to wear to school (never the red unless your name is Heather Chandler) but also the unknown possibility of whether Veronica and the Heathers will finally get a sequel to their teen angst body count.

"Heathers," written by Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann, starred a young Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, a high school girl who befriends the popular girls at Westerburg High School. The girls all happen to...

Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Heathers (1989)
Heathers: 5 Things That Hold Up Today (5 That Didn't Age Well)
Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Heathers (1989)
Content warning: the following article contains discussions/depictions of teen violence, bullying, suicide, and homophobia.

While most movies reflect the time period in which they're made, teen movies in particular have a lot to say about society. The 1989 film Heathers is much darker than most in the genre. It tells the story of Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), who is in a group of popular girls all named Heather. When attempting to teach Heather Chandler (Kim Patton) a lesson, Veronica and J.D. (Christian Slater) end up killing her.

Like other teen movies that don't get that much attention at first, Heathers became a cult classic, and while fans love its depiction of high school life and how it talks about subjects that other movies don't, there are definitely some problems with it. While much of Heathers is still relevant today, other parts bring up some issues.

Heathers Week: Lisanne Falk on the Relatability of Heather McNamara and Why Heathers Continues to Connect with Teens 30 Years Later
With his feature film debut Heathers, director Michael Lehmann set the world of high school comedies ablaze with his timelessly satirical examination of the horrors of the teenage experience. With its blisteringly pitch-black tone and its razor-sharp dialogue, one of the biggest reasons Heathers continues to resonate with audiences—whether it’s fans who first saw it three decades ago or new generations of fans who continue to discover it to this very day, thanks to the home media market and various streaming platforms that feature Heathers—is the film’s engaging and ingenious cast, who were all able to bring both the memorable characters and screenwriter Daniel Waters’ iconic dialogue to life.

While the entire ensemble of Heathers all played their part in establishing the film as a cult classic in the making, it’s the core quintet of young actors—Winona Ryder (Veronica Sawyer), Christian Slater (J.D.

Michael Lehmann at an event for Because I Said So (2007)
What’s Your Damage? Why a ’Heathers’ TV Adaptation Hasn’t Worked — Yet
Michael Lehmann at an event for Because I Said So (2007)
As “Heathers” approaches the 30th anniversary of its U.S. premiere, television has made yet another failed attempt to pay homage to Michael Lehmann’s 1989 pitch-black high school comedy. The cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater inspired a whole genre of dark school comedies that tried to emulate the film’s quippy dialogue, heightened style, and satirical look at the grim realities of teenage life.

Add to that list of imitators The CW’s Archie Comics melodrama “Riverdale,” which presented its second musical episode on Wednesday. This time around, it featured the Broadway musical “Heathers,” which is a more heartfelt and navel-gazing adaptation of the movie. Even though the gothic “Riverdale” would seem like a good fit for this homicidal high school tale, the show managed to fail in honoring both the film and stage versions of “Heathers.”

In fact, it didn’t even try. There’s no...

‘Riverdale’ to Stage ‘Heathers’ for Next Musical Episode
Riverdale (2017)
The next musical episode of “Riverdale” may be less bloody but it’ll have no shortage of death.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the showrunner of the CW teen dramedy, revealed on Twitter on Thursday that the “Riverdale” kids will be taking on “Heathers: The Musical” in the show’s next musical episode.

Airing Wednesday, March 20, the episode will, confusingly, see Josie (Ashleigh Murray) take on the lead role of Veronica Sawyer, with Veronica (Camila Mendes) playing Heather McNamara. Betty (Lili Reinhart) will step into Shannen Doherty’s shoes as head mean girl Heather Duke, and bad boy Sweet Pea (Jordan Connor) will play J.D. Once again, Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) will direct.
