All You Need Is Kill Fantastia Review — Anime Version of Light Novel Is Visually Stunning but Melodramatic
Image
Adapting a famous novel is a monumental task for any filmmaker, particularly if that novel has already received an acclaimed adaptation. Yet, that is exactly what first-time feature director Ken’ichirô Akimoto did with All You Need Is Kill, and while enough of his ambitious swings pay off that the film stands out, several of its elements leave something to be desired.

All You Need Is Kill Review

All You Need Is Kill is adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel and follows a young soldier who finds herself trapped in a time loop after being killed by an otherworldly threat. If this premise sounds familiar, that’s because it probably is. The novel from which this movie is adapted was also the inspiration for 2014’s Tom Cruise actioner Edge of Tomorrow, a big-budget spectacle with a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie (the Mission: Impossible franchise) and Jaz and John-Henry Butterworth (Ford v.

An Anime Adaptation of the Story That Inspired Tom Cruise’s ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Is Finally Coming to Theaters
Image
Live. Die. Repeat. Over a decade ago, we became familiar with that motto when we saw Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible film series) fight for his life, only to start over after he dies multiple times in Edge of Tomorrow. What many people don't know is that the blockbuster hit is based on a light novel by Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. This year, the story is being adapted again — but this time as an anime movie. Gkids announced today that All You Need Is Kill has been acquired for distribution, and the first screening is already set up. The movie will debut at this year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival this weekend.

All You Need Is Killwill tell the time travel story from a different perspective than the light novel and Edge of Tomorrow. The story takes place in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, and centers around a gigantic alien plant that is...

Gkids Acquires Multiple Territories For Japanese Action Sci-Fi Animated Feature ‘All You Need Is Kill’ – Annecy
Image
Exclusive: Gkids has acquired multiple territories for Japanese animated action sci-fi drama All You Need Is Kill, including for North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

The movie is based on the eponymous best-selling novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka which also inspired Doug Liman’s 2014 live-action adaptation Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

The directorial debut of Kenichiro Akimoto, with a script written by Yuichiro Kido, the new animated adaptation world premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this week in the Midnight Specials section.

All You Need Is Kill is produced by Warner Bros. Japan with animation production by celebrated Japanese animation house Studio 4°C.

Studio 4°C, which is also at Annecy this year with Yasuhiro Aoki’s drama ChaO in the main competition, will be hosting a studio presentation at the festival on Friday, in the presence of...

Annecy Review: ‘All You Need Is Kill’ Is ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Gone Anime (Complimentary)
Image
If Ken’ichirô Akimoto’s new anime feature “All You Need Is Kill” feels familiar, that’s because it is. The film is an adaptation of the Japanese light novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe that also inspired “Edge of Tomorrow,” the 2014 Tom Cruise hit directed by Doug Liman.

Liman’s film, a sci-fi thriller about an ordinary man (Cruise), forced into battle during a massive alien invasion and cursed with having to relive the same day over and over and over again, took plenty of liberties with the source material. Akimoto’s new take, written by Yûichirô Kido and Hiroshi Sakurazaka takes its own liberties, but it keeps the novel’s much better title — and also maintains the flinty charm of the Liman movie.

As “All You Need is Kill” opens, Earth is dealing with the arrival of Darol – a massive outer space plant whose intentions are unknown.

Food Wars Creator Recommends the Next Hit Shonen Jump Action Comedy Series
Image
Yuto Tsukuda, the creator of Weekly Shonen Jump's hit culinary comedyFood Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, recently promoted an up-and-coming fellow Shonen Jump IP. The manga in question is Shinobi Undercover, a zany action-comedy revolving around a ninja and a high school girl.

Tsukuda's new recommendation was shared by @WSJmanga, an unofficial Shonen Jump news hub on X (formerly Twitter). Shinobi Undercover, which was created by Ippon Takegushi (story) and Santa Mitarashi (art), revolves around a ninja named Todaka who lives and works in modern-day Japan. One day, he is ordered to protect a cheerful but klutzy high school student named Aoi. In order to be a proper guard, he masquerades as Aoi's fellow classmate. According to the X post, Tsukuda is particularly fond of the "moe" (cute and/or innocent) attributes of the lead character.
