Applications are now open for the 22nd edition of Screen International’s Screen Stars of Tomorrow, our annual portfolio of new talent from the UK and Ireland.

The submissions window is open from April 16 until May 30, 2025.

Applications are open to UK and Irish citizens and long-term residents of either country. There is no upper or lower age limit, but applicants should be at an early stage in their film career, demonstrate exceptional promise and be ready to progress to the next level.

Rising screen star Deba Hekmat, who caught the eye of critics for her first lead role in buzzy British indie drama “Last Swim,” has signed with Olivia Bell Management in the U.K.

The Kurdish-British model, actress and writer — who was born in Iran but moved to the U.K. as a child — received acclaim for her performance in Sasha Nathwani’s well-received feature debut, only her second film credit. The track captures the confusion and frustration of youth, but also the euphoria and overwhelming sense of possibility it can instill, even in the face of a cruel world. Conclave and The Brutalist tied with four wins at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards, announced on January 16th during a ceremony hosted by David Tennant. Anora, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Wicked, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul each picked up two awards, and David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) was the recipient of this year’s Ee Rising Star Award.

Adrien Brody, Mikey Madison, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin took home their first BAFTA Film Awards wins. The BAFTA 2025 winners have been announced, and it was an exciting night celebrating the best in British and international cinema. From Edward Berger’s Conclave sweeping multiple categories to The Brutalist making a late surge with wins for Best Director and Best Actor, the evening was filled with surprises and emotional speeches. Mikey Madison’s unexpected win for Anora had everyone talking, while Emilia Perez and Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl continued their strong awards season run. Hosted by David Tennant at London’s Royal Festival Hall, the ceremony honored industry legends and rising talents, making the BAFTA Awards 2025 a night to remember.

This evening saw the cream of the crop of thespian artists as well as filmmakers assemble at London’s Royal Festival Hall for this year’s BAFTA awards hosted by David Tennant.

This year’s nominations saw 12 nominations for ‘Conclave,’ 11 nominations for ‘Emilia Pérez,’ While ‘The Brutalist’ received 9 nominations. 7 nominations for ‘Anora,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked.’

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.

Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".

Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."

A somewhat surprising addition to the night (though perhaps not given their presence on the soundtracks for both Better Man and Anora) was a performance of "Greatest Day" by Take That.

As for the winners, it was a good night for Conclave, which won Best Film, another Adapted Screenplay trophy for writer Peter Straughan, Best British Film and Editing and A Real Pain, which went home with Original Screenplay for...

“Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.

Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.

The winners of the 2025 London Critics’ Circle Film Awards have been announced!

Zoe Saldana, Ralph Fiennes, and Mikey Madison were among the top winners at the awards show that took place on Sunday night (February 2) held at the Mayfair Hotel in London, England.

Along with winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez, Zoe was also honored with the Derek Malcolm Award for Innovation while Daniel Craig was honored with the Dilys Powell Award for excellence in film.

Brady Corbet’s epic American immigrant saga “The Brutalist” has been given the top prize by the U.K.’s leading film writers and broadcasters.

At the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday night, the feature was named film of the year in a ceremony that saw the honors widely shared across a number of titles, although notably both “The Substance” and “A Complete Unknown” came away empty-handed.

Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller “Conclave” took two awards, including British/Irish film of the year and actor of the year for Ralph Fiennes, while RaMell Ross’s radical Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” was recognised with director of the year and the technical achievement award for Jomo Fray’s first-person cinematography.

Elsewhere on the night, Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy “A Real Pain” was another multiple prizewinner, awarded screenwriter of the year for the actor-filmmaker, and supporting actor of the year for co-star Kieran Culkin.

Amsterdam-based Piece of Magic Entertainment has acquired distribution rights for France and Benelux for Luna Carmoon’s “Hoard,” which is BAFTA nominated in the outstanding debut by a British filmmaker catagory. The deal was brokered by Alpha Violet, a sales company based in Paris.

The film was also nominated at the European Film Awards in the European Discovery Prix Fipresci category, and competed at the BFI London Film Festival in the first feature competition section.

At the British Independent Film Awards the film was nominated for supporting performance (Hayley Squires), joint lead performance, best debut director (Carmoon), breakthrough performance (Saura Lightfoot-Leon), casting (Heather Basten), and production design (Bobbie Cousins).

Sunrise Films previously acquired the film for the U.S. and Canada. Vertigo Releasing holds the rights for the U.K. and Ireland.

Sunrise Films has secured North American distribution rights to British film “In Camera,” the feature debut from writer-director Naqqash Khalid, following lead actor Nabhaan Rizwan’s nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star Award. The deal, inked with Together Films, sets the film for an April 15 release.

The film stars Rizwan as Aden, a young thespian trapped in a series of nightmarish auditions who decides to forge his own path after facing multiple rejections. BAFTA winner Amir El-Masry (“2021”) rounds out the cast of the formally inventive drama that takes aim at film industry prejudice and social hypocrisy through the lens of a struggling British Asian actor’s experience.

“Self-reflexive satirical filmmaking of this nature is relatively rare on the British independent scene — perhaps, in part, because financing and producing features at all is such a strenuous endeavor that artists are loath to bite any of the various hands feeding them,” wrote Guy Lodge,...

Conclave emerged the favorite among the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards voters, scoring 12 nominations including Best Film, Director, Leading Actor, and Supporting Actress. Emilia Pérez was close behind with 11 nominations, followed by The Brutalist with nine and Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked with seven.

Overall, 42 films earned BAFTA Film Awards nominations, and 14 of the 24 performance nominees are BAFTA Awards first-timers.

Winners will be announced on February 16th.

The 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in, with 42 films receiving nods on Wednesday morning. Congratulations are in order for Rich Peppiatt and his Kneecap crew and cast — the movie became one of the British Academy’s most nominated debut films ever, just behind Rocks (2019) and Billy Elliot (2000).

Peppiatt himself became the most nominated debut director ever with 4 nods, just ahead of Billy Elliot‘s Stephen Daldry (3).

The Irish hip-hop “print the legend” biopic on the Belfast-based rap trio — boasting Michael Fassbender among its ensemble — scored six nominations overall on Wednesday, including for outstanding British film, outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer and best casting for Carla Stronge.

Artists like Throbbing Gristle, Anna Domino, Silver Apples, Suicide, Dean Blunt, and Laurie Anderson offered a huge prop of character within these films. They could set each film in a specific time and place, or, in the case of Civil War, give a punk, psychedelic energy to a near-future world.Staying through the end credits is important...

Kneecap went into the awards ceremony leading the 2024 nominations with 14, Love Lies Bleeding had 12, The Outrun received 9 nominations, 7 nominations each for Bird, on becoming a guinea fowl and unicorns, 6 for Hoard and Civil War. As 2024 nears its end, that can only mean one thing — awards season is upon us! And while various Critics' Circle and Guild bashes have already gotten underway, tonight was the first major event of the season on this side of the pond: the British Independent Film Awards. Hosted by Peter Serafinowicz at London's Roundhouse, the ceremony saw Rich Peppiatt's barnstorming Irish rap trio biopic Kneecap — already one of Empire's Best Movies of 2024 — emerge as the night's biggest winner. In all, the film (which is streaming now on Prime Video UK) picked up seven gongs on the night, including Best British Independent Film, Best Joint Lead Performance for Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh, and Best Debut Screenwriter for Peppiatt.

“Kneecap,” the hit Irish comedy biopic about the Belfast rap group of the same name, has landed the top honor at the British Independent Film Awards and a total of seven BIFA awards overall.

Writer/director Rich Peppiatt’s debut feature — which went into Sunday’s ceremony already having won four BIFA craft awards — was named best British independent film, with Peppiatt winning best debut screenwriter and Kneecap bandmates Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh (who all play themselves) winning best joint lead.

Elsewhere on the night, which was hosted by Peter Serafinowicz, Rungano Nyoni won best director for her sophomore feature “On Becoming A Guinea Fowl,” exploring buried secrets in a middle class Zambian family. The film’s lead star Susan Chardy won breakthrough performance.

Meanwhile, Sandhya Suri, writer/director of Hindi-language crime thriller “Santosh,” won best screenplay. “Santosh,” which is the U.K.

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” won best film, director, screenwriter and actress at the 37th European Film Awards, which were held Saturday in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The best film nominees included narrative features “The Room Next Door,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” “The Substance” and “Vermiglio,” as well as documentaries “Bye Bye Tiberias,” “Dahomey,” “In Limbo,” “No Other Land” and “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” and animated films “Flow,” “Living Large,” “Savages,” “Sultana’s Dream” and “They Shot the Piano Player.”

Hoard writer-director Luna Carmoon, Didi filmmaker Sean Wang and Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau are among 43 Bafta Breakthrough members for its 2024 cohort.

The 43 names consist of 21 UK creatives, 13 from the US and nine from India. The selected members hail from film, games and television, and will receive one-to-one meetings, career guidance, full Bafta voting membership and access to screenings and networking events in the year-long initiative.

Spotlighting 43 “must-watch” creatives working across film, games and television in the U.K., U.S. and India, the flagship talent initiative is supported by Netflix and aims to provide a springboard for young creatives in costume design, production, casting, editing, games design, performance, directing, composing and cinematography.

Whilst the eyes of the world may be locked firmly on the other side of the Atlantic this morning, back here in Blighty there is at least some positivity still to be shared yet. Having shone last year when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, the independent British cinema scene has continued to shine throughout 2024, with revered greats, rising stars, returning masters, and bold new narratives all emerging to ensure the flame for indies from these shores has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.

The British Independent Film Awards this year honor two Sundance breakout films, with both “Kneecap” and “Love Lies Bleeding” atop the 2024 nominations list.

Rich Peppiatt’s “Kneecap” (repping Ireland for the 2024 Best International Feature Oscar) leads this year’s nominees with 14 nods, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best British Independent Film. “Kneecap” is based on the eponymous rap group, which star here alongside Michael Fassbender in a fictionalized band origin story.

Following “Kneecap” with 12 nominations is Rose Glass’s “Love Lies Bleeding.” Co-leads Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian are nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance, and the film has also been recognized in the Best British Independent Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay categories.

Additional features that received multiple nominations include “The Outrun,” “Bird,” and “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl.”

Nora Fingsheidt‘s “The Outrun” received nine bids, including Best Lead Performance for Saoirse Ronan, who previously won the BIFA for Best Actress for 2015’s “Brooklyn.” The film is up for the top prize, while Fingsheidt is nominated for her direction and her script with Amy Liptrot.

The nominations for the main categories of this year’s awards, which take place on December 7 in Lucerne, were announced this morning by the European Film Academy.

Fifteen features compete for the best European film prize, up from five last year. This follows a recent rule change which means that films shortlisted for the best documentary and animation categories can also compete in the section.

The European Film Awards has broadened the scope of its prestigious Best European Film category for this year’s ceremony. Documentaries and animated features will now be eligible to compete alongside traditional narrative films for the top honor.

This change is reflected in the nominations announced ahead of the December 7 ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland. A record 15 films are nominated in the expanded Best European Film category, representing a variety of storytelling formats. This includes narrative films like “Emilia Pérez” and “The Substance,” documentaries such as Mati Diop’s “Dahomey” and Lina Soualem’s “Bye Bye Tiberias,” as well as the animated film “Flow” by Gints Zilbalodis.

The directing category also highlights both established names and newcomers. Subversive Irish breakout pic Kneecap and Sasha Nathwani’s gentle yet ambitious debut Last Swim are among the titles that have nabbed mentions on the new talent longlists at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

Both Kneecap and Last Swim pop up on the Douglas Hickox Best Debut Director Award longlist. Other nominees include Hoard, directed by Luna Carmoon, and Karan Kandhari’s Sister Midnight, which debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

All four films also feature on the best screenplay longlist alongside Christopher Andrews’s Bring Them Down starring Barry Keoghan and Christopher Abbott. Other pics on the screenplay longlist include The Ceremony by Jack King and Jed Hart’s Restless.

Overall, the longlists include 31 British features, with 20 fiction and 11 documentary features across four debut filmmaking categories.
