Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Review: Endearing Animated Story Could’ve Gone Deeper
Image
Being a teenager is hard. Countless movies and television shows have been dedicated to that fact. DreamWorks' latest animated features posits the same thing, but with a unique twist: Being a teenager is hard, but being a teenage kraken is harder. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken mixes the fantastical with the realistic in portraying its titular heroine's journey of self-discovery and growth. Coming in at a very slim hour and a half, Kirk DeMicco's movie (co-directed by Faryn Pearl) is sometimes too speedy for its own good, and anyone who has seen a single trailer will already know its biggest plot twist. Despite all that, though, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is saved by a stunning voice cast and its sweet depiction of family, especially when it comes to its central mother-daughter duo.

Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) is your typical teenager, grappling with schoolwork and anxiety-inducing crushes. These issues are made...

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken – Review
Image
Things have certainly gotten interesting recently with the Summer box office. Usually, we’d be talking about the records being broken by the superhero franchises or the big action-adventure “tentpoles”. Then a big switch happened last weekend when the first two spots in the weekly Bo “Top Tens” were animated features. Studio wisdom was the notion that animated flicks would “cancel each other out” hurting the ticket sales on both. Nope, not this time, though the rapid downhill trajectory of a certain scarlet speedster aided their performance. Could this brand-new animated feature snag a spot in the top five with the other two holdovers? Mind you, that globetrotting archeologist will crack his bullwhip into the upper slots on the roster. However, families may want to return to the sea after that recent Disney live-action remake and dive into the adventures of another mythical nautical being, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

Wait a sec,...

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Review: A Waterlogged Coming-of-Age Story
Kirk DeMicco at an event for The Croods (2013)
Kirk DeMicco’s Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken feels torn between being a story of racial difference and offering a compelling vision of teenage growing pains. Sweet but narratively thin and didactic, the latest from DreamWorks Animation always seems as if it’s trying to find its footing, which is apt insofar as its main character, a 15-year-old champion mathlete named Ruby (Lana Condor), is trying to understand her place in the world.

Ruby goes through high school wondering why her parents, Agatha (Toni Collette) and Arthur (Colman Domingo), are so strict about keeping her away from sea water. And, unfortunately for Ruby, that includes not being able to attend her high school prom, as it’s set to take place on a massive cruise ship in the ocean. One day, while flirting with Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), Ruby accidentally pushes her would-be paramour into the ocean, and upon diving in after...

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Review: A Clever Girl Power Message with Vivid Animation
Image
A blue-skinned,15-year-old "mathlete" with a strict mother and dreams of going to the prom learns she's a princess with extraordinary abilities. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken delights with a clever take on the trials and tribulations of growing up. Her adolescent journey is humorously complicated by a big secret. Ruby and her family are sea creatures — drum roll please — masquerading as Canadians. She endures a frightening physical transformation, a duplicitous peer, and unrealistic expectations to find her true self. The film delivers a sweet girl power message with vivid animation that the entire family will enjoy.

Ruby (Lana Condor) has a serious crush on the cute skateboarder she tutors. She desperately wants to attend her high school prom with the charming Connor (Jaboukie Young-White). But there's a big problem that goes against her mother Agatha's (Toni Collette) cardinal rule. Under no circumstances should Ruby or Sam (Blue Chapman), her precocious little brother,...

It was the second consecutive drama series in the mold of This Is Us launched by NBC that did not go beyond one season, following last season’s The Village. Council of Dads ranks as one of NBC’s lowest rated drama series of the season. It joins fellow freshman NBC series Bluff City Law, Lincoln Rhyme, Perfect Harmony, Indebted and Sunnyside which all have been canceled. The one NBC first-year scripted show to make it to Season 2 is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

Council of Dads Cancelled at NBC
Michael O'Neill, J. August Richards, Tom Everett Scott, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, and Blue Chapman in Council of Dads (2020)
We've got some bad news, Council of Dads fans.

NBC has decided to not move forward with a second season of the series.

While no official announcement has been made by the network, sources close to the show have confirmed the cancellation.

So, that means Council of Dads Season 1 Episode 10 will ultimately serve as the series finale, as well as the season's.

Council of Dads was a newcomer this season, often compared to NBC's popular family drama This Is Us.

It was created by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, both known for their work on ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

The cast and crew are heartbroken over the news that they won't be able to continue the story of the Perry family.

Inspired by the book "The Council of Dads" by Bruce Fieler, the series followed the story of Scott Perry and his family.

Before his death, Scott recruits three of his...

Council of Dads Star Blue Chapman & Family Celebrate Pride With Their Own Mini Parade
Blue Chapman
The coronavirus pandemic may've derailed Pride celebrations across the country, but not for Blue Chapman and his family. Over the weekend, Blue and his loved ones held their own mini-Pride parade in honor of both Pride month and the up-and-coming actor's 9th birthday. During an exclusive chat with E! News, Blue's mom Jennifer Brookings Chapman said it was "important for us to celebrate," even if it meant celebrating on a smaller scale. "Obviously, we're very big on Pride, I have two kiddos that identify in the LGBTQ community, so it's important for us to celebrate," she told E! News. "And, rightfully so, there weren't public celebrations this year for Pride, but we wanted to...

Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Faithe Herman in This Is Us (2016)
‘Council of Dads’: TV Review
Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Faithe Herman in This Is Us (2016)
The long-tail effect of “This Is Us” — the only network drama launch in recent memory to achieve its particular alchemical blend of popular and critical acclaim along with awards attention — remains very much in effect, as evidenced by “Council of Dads.” This new NBC drama would seem to take its network-mate as a template, incorporating, through shifts through time, a foundational family trauma that gives way to a clan whose structure’s unconventionality is, perhaps its strength.

Which means that “Council of Dads” — in which the widow and children of a recently deceased pillar of his community are attended to by a council of dads — has an unshakable solidity to its foundation. At its core, the family story here works, and mysteries seeded through time are intriguing enough to make staying tuned seem like an appealing proposition. Where “Council of Dads” falters is when it ventures too far onto the...

Council of Dads: Grade the Premiere
Tom Everett Scott
NBC convened its Council of Dads this Tuesday night, with a sneak preview airing more than a month ahead of its Thursdays-at-8/7c premiere. Will you (remember to) follow the family drama to its regular home?

Inspired by Bruce Feiler’s book of the same name, Council of Dads‘ verrrrry table-setty pilot opens up in the summer, where we meet Scott and Robin Perry (played by Tom Everett Scott and Prison Break‘s Sarah Wayne Callies) and their already sizable Georgia family: Luly (Love Is___‘ Michele Weaver), Scott’s daughter by another woman, who is waiting to hear about a...

‘Council of Dads’ Review: NBC Tries to Recreate ‘This Is Us’ Magic With Uneven Results
Tony Phelan
When Bruce Feiler was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his early forties, the author and television personality concocted a creative plan to ensure that his young twin daughters would grow up with all the love and wisdom he wanted to share with them, care of a “council of dads” who would step in should he pass away. Feiler then assembled a six-man council to do just that, tapped to pick up the slack after Feiler’s passing and guide his kiddos through a tough time with love and care. Feiler never had to activate his so-called council, though he did write a bestselling book about the scheme, and it eventually spawned Joan Rater and Tony Phelan’s gentle if scattershot NBC drama “Council of Dads.”

Like NBC’s other tearjerking family drama “This Is Us” — there’s certainly no coincidence that the pilot of “Council of Dads...

‘Council Of Dads’ Premiere Pushed Back By Two Weeks On NBC
Michael O'Neill, J. August Richards, Tom Everett Scott, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, and Blue Chapman in Council of Dads (2020)
NBC has delayed the launch of its new drama series Council of Dads. Originally scheduled to premiere on March 10, Council of Dads now will debut on Tuesday, March 24 at 10 Pm Et/Pt, immediately following the season finale of This Is Us.

The scheduled shift was revealed in a New Amsterdam promo that aired last night on NBC. The hit medical drama series will now air March 10 and 17 in its 10 Pm time slot

NBC has made a big investment in sophomore New Amsterdam, which was recently given a massive three-season renewal. The scheduling tweak will give the Ryan Eggold-starring series two more airings in the coveted post-This Is Us slot where it has excelled, logging its best Live+ Same Day numbers since the fall last night.

Under the new arrangement, the Council Of Dads premiere still will benefit from the and buzz generated by the This Is Us Season 4 finale,...

NBC Moves ‘Council of Dads’ Series Premiere to Follow ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Finale
Michael O'Neill, J. August Richards, Tom Everett Scott, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, and Blue Chapman in Council of Dads (2020)
NBC has shifted back the series premiere of its new drama “Council of Dads” by two weeks so that it will now air immediately after the Season 4 finale of “This Is Us.”

The freshman show will also be changing weeknights when it returns, as it was originally scheduled to settled into the Dan Fogelman-created drama’s 9 p.m. Tuesday slot once that series ended its current run. Now it’s going to Thursdays, with “Ellen’s Game of Games” taking over the time period from “This Is Us.”

“Council of Dads,” which was set to debut at 10/9c on Tuesday, March 10, will now premiere in that same hour on Tuesday, March 24, just after the final episode of the fourth season of “This Is Us.”

NBC 2019 Fall Schedule: Manifest, Will & Grace Pushed to Midseason!
Stability is the name of the game at NBC as the network heads into the 2019-20 TV season.

With only one new drama and two new comedies on the fall schedule, the network is keeping things simple.

New Jimmy Smitts legal drama, Bluff City Law is taking the 10/9c post-The Voice slot.

NBC typically uses that slot to launch new dramas, but given that The Voice has been fading this season, there's a good chance it won't be the solid launch pad it once was.

This move leaves Manifest off the fall schedule to allow for uninterupted 2020 run, which is probably a good thing given the serialized nature of the series.

The Good Place is moving to 9/8c on a permanent basis for its fourth season. It will be sandwiched between new comedies, Perfect Harmony and Sunnyside.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Will & Grace are both being held for midseason.

The...

‘Council Of Dads’ Drama Picked Up To Series By NBC
NBC has given a series order to drama pilot Council of Dads, from Doubt creators Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Universal TV.

The project, inspired by Bruce Feiler’s best-selling memoir, had been a standout throughout the pilot process. Having a similar sensibility to This Is Us, Council of Dads is considered a potential companion for the hit family drama.

Council of Dads, starring Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Tom Everett Scott and J. August Richards, marks NBC’s third new series pickup for next season, joining legal drama Bluff City Law starring Jimmy Smits and Kal Penn’s immigrant comedy Sunnyside. All three come from NBC sibling Uni TV.

Feiler’s memoir The Council of Dads: My Daughters, My Illness and the Men Who Could Be Me was first adapted for TV eight years ago as a half-hour comedy by Peter Tolan, which went to...
