Brielle Brilliant’s feature directorial debut Firstness starring Tim Kinsella, Spencer Jording and Caleb Cabrera snagged the U.S. narrative feature grand jury prize at Outfest, which just wrapped up a 10-day run in Los Angeles. On the documentary side, Vivian Kleiman’s No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics, an examination of LGBTQ comedy talent, won the top prize in the respective nonfiction category.

The story of struggling single father Keith (Tim Kinsella), his non-binary child Tavi (Spencer Jording), and the recently released prisoner, Julian (Caleb Cabrera), whom Tavi befriends, Firstness is the début feature-length work by artist and filmmaker Brielle Brilliant. It recently screened at OutFest Los Angeles, where it made quite an impression due to its gentle pace and unusual style. Towards the end of the festival I connected with the director to ask them why they chose this particular story, and this moment, so break through into features.

Set in the wide open landscapes of New Mexico where everything seems tactile yet insubstantial, Firstness is the début feature film by established artist Brielle Brilliant, and one of the more unusual works at this year's Outfest Los Angeles. Functioning in many ways as a critique of established form, it follows three lost souls who are looking for their own ways of perceiving, understanding and communicating with the world around them, a process that emphasises their status as outsiders but could ultimately lead to a form of liberation.
