In typical Netflix fashion, the streaming giant is already gearing up for the removal of several favorites, including some high-profile movies, series, and a couple of Netflix Originals, ahead of next month. Among these works of art is the beloved isekai anime series, Overlord, as confirmed by What’s on Netflix. All four seasons of Overlord depart Netflix on July 1, about three weeks away, which may not be enough time for fans to revisit the 52-episode series.
While this may be saddening, several other options are available to stream Overlord. Crunchyroll currently streams all four seasons but may not be as easily accessible as Netflix. Hulu offers Overlord, too, but unfortunately, only Season 1 is available on the streamer. Meanwhile, for physical media collectors, retailers list each collection for around $30-40, depending on the format.

Crunchyroll announced recently that Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom is finally available to stream on the platform.
Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom brings the story to a close twelve years after Momonga Aka Ainz Ooal Gown (voiced by Satoshi Hino in the original Japanese and by Chris Guerrero in the English dub) started to play his favorite video game. Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord shows an interesting take on a typical isekai series. With the isekai genre expanding each season with countless releases, Overlord shines as a standout anime in the genre.
There’s a plethora of anime and manga where the protagonist is trapped in an RPG world, but what makes Overlord stand out is its rich narrative and characters, especially the protagonist. The story follows Ainz on his journey as he decides to rule over the new world he’s been teleported to and turn it into a utopia for himself and his allies.

Not to forget, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom is the first theatrical film from the franchise, which brought the popular anime series to the big screen. Amid rumors of Season 5 being green-lit, Overlord’s author challenged the most acclaimed tropes of the isekai genre, which he intentionally reshaped in his series.

Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord shows an interesting take on a typical isekai series. There are plenty of anime/manga in which the protagonist is stuck in an RPG world, and their goal is to escape from it. But not in Overlord, because when the protagonist becomes the most powerful demon sorcerer, the last thing he wants to do is give it up.

Ainz’s instant decision to stay in the game world is refreshing, to say the least. Another refreshing take is that instead of creating a beautiful game avatar, the protagonist takes the form of a skeletal undead. But why did Mayuyama abandon visuals so easily?

Whether someone loves or hates the isekai genre, Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord has something to cater to everyone. The series provides a fresh perspective on common isekai tropes, which can be refreshing for isekai lovers. As for those on the fence, they probably won’t find any of the aspects that give the genre a bad reputation among fans. In a lot of ways, Overlord sets itself apart from most isekai anime-manga series.

However, Maruyama spelled out the exact thing during an interview that made Overlord stand out. And it’s the protagonist, Ainz Ooal Gown, who is the life and soul of the series. His characterization gives the much-needed depth to his story usually lacking in most isekai shows. Maruyama spoke at length about different aspects of Overlord and the thought process behind Ainz, so let’s delve into it!

Despite being one of the best fantasy anime stories in recent years, Overlord has persistently failed to attract a larger fan base compared to other series. This made many in the anime community scratch their heads, wondering why a series as well-constructed as this one could not connect with everyone on a deeper level.

Interestingly, the author of the series, Kugane Maruyama, had foreseen this. In an interview, he admitted that he had never thought Overlord would even gain the number of fans it has now. This raises a very important question about what contributes to a series’ popularity and why, despite its many strengths, Overlord has not been able to gain a larger and more devoted fan base. The answer to that was already conveyed by the creator.

Overlord is currently one of the most popular isekai franchises, and the concept of the genre is being taken literally in a new exhibit. Filled with art and other aspects related to the series, it's also the home of a gigantic statue that's worth reincarnating for.
Given the forward title of the "Overlord Exhibition," a new exhibit based on the series celebrates the history of the isekai smash hit. It's all in honor of the release of Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, the newest movie in the franchise. Most importantly, however, the event gives fans a look at just how huge the anime movie's protagonist would be in real life.

In July 2015, Season 1 of Madhouse's hit isekai anime, Overlord, premiered on Japanese television. Nearly 10 years later, Satoshi Hino, who voices main protagonist Suzuki Satoru/Ainz Ooal Gown, has shared his views on why the series continues to resonate with audiences both in and outside Japan.
Based on the titular light novel series created by author Kugane Maruyama and artist So-bin, Overlord belongs to isekai's "media transfer" sub-genre. As the name suggests, this genre typically features a main character who dies and is reborn into the world of a TV show or video game they played shortly before dying. In a recent interview with Mantan Web, Hino reflects on his experiences voicing Overlord's lead character -- an ordinary office worker who is reborn as a skeletal warrior inside an online video game known as "Yggdrasil."

Overlord revolutionized and popularized modern isekai setups with its unique vision and influence. The series featuring a lich and his dungeon sets it apart from other isekai stories, showcasing originality. Despite being over-saturated, every isekai fan should watch Overlord to appreciate its impact and iconic status.
With Overlord joining Netflix's massive catalogue, anime fans have a fresh chance to watch the classic isekai series. While it seems a bit quaint now, this only belies how impressive Overlord was at the vanguard of today's trends of inhuman protagonists, power fantasies, and the use of game mechanics. With the popularity it commands even today, now is the best time to go and see what the excitement is all about.
Even with the wide variety of shapes and escapades isekai stories place their heroes in, none have tried copying the setup of a lich and his multi-floor dungeon. This attests to both...

Finding a worthwhile isekai title can be daunting, but these ten manga stand out with original stories and captivating characters. Most isekai manga are adaptations of light novels or anime, but these titles are well worth readers' time. The Eminence in Shadow, The Faraway Paladin, and Overlord offer fresh takes on the isekai genre with unique protagonists and exciting journeys.
Given the trending popularity of the genre, it may be difficult to assess which isekai manga is actually worth reading, and which is but another uninspired addition to the ubiquitous genre instead. Most isekai stories begin as light novels, which then get an anime and/or manga adaptation once they are popular enough. For manga fans, then, isekai is not always the go-to choice.
