Sahara

Chuckle Chuckle (2025) by Yuka Nishida Film Review
Image
Fight Club meets Manzai. Yuka Nishida’s feature film debut plays with the viewer’s perception and tells a tragic story within a comedy setting. Serving as her graduation project at Kyoto University of the Arts’ Department of Film Production, the Kyoto-born director follows up on her short film “Karamari-Kun” (2022) and celebrates the World Premiere at Skip City International D-Cinema Festival.

Chuckle Chuckle is screening at Skip City International D-Cinema Festival

Sahara and Setoguchi, two part-time working students in their 30s, meet at a stand-up workshop and form a comedy duo named “Ultrasweet Sourpork”. After many failed castings and a mental breakdown, the duo splits up, and Setoguchi becomes famous with another partner. Sahara is left behind with his messed-up life, working at the shopping mall’s information desk. Created from the pressure of achieving something, one day, suddenly, a “perfect” version of Sahara appears in his small apartment. Equipped with an appalling appearance,...

A Silent Voice Could Have Been Saved as an Adaptation with a Single Change that Still Makes it a Flawed Film
Image
The cinematic release of A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) back in 2016 quickly earned critical acclaim for its beautiful animation and emotional depth. The movie was focused on various topics like bullying, trauma, and redemption. Directed by Naoko Yamada and produced by Kyoto Animation, the movie adaptation of Yoshitoki Ōima’s manga had a lasting impression, but for many fans of the manga, the story had something missing.

While the movie was visually stunning and emotionally resonant, its limited runtime ultimately worked against it, adding a limitation to a rich, layered narrative, making it feel completely rushed and uneven. Had A Silent Voice received an anime adaptation instead of a two-hour film, it may have preserved more of its core themes, character development, and nuanced storytelling.

Sachin Khedekar, Who Turns 60 Today, On Playing Subhas Chandra Bose In Shyam Benegal’s Biopic
Image
Turning 21 this week is Shyam Benegal’s biopic Netajji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero. Sachin Khedekar, who turns 60 today, talks with Subhas K Jha on playing the lead character Subhas Chandra Bose.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has always been a controversial figure. Filmmakers have shied away from delving too deep into Netaji’s life.

Not Shyam Benegal. In 2014 he made a brave if flawed bio-pic on Netaji entitled Netajji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero. The story goes that media baron Subrato Roy commissioned Shyam Benegal to make the best-possible bio-pic on Netaji, budget unlimited.

“So how much do you think you will need to do full justice to Netaji?” the millionaire wondered aloud.

“10 crores?” Benegal whose budgets had never gone beyond 5 crores, ventured boldly.

“Take 60. But give me a bio-pic on Netaji that will never be forgotten,” Subrato offered.

Benegal who had never known such a budget just...

Manga Review: Tail’s Tale Vol. 1 (2018) by Mizu Sahara
Image
by Bayani Miguel Acebedo

Sumomo Yumeka is best known for her work as a Yaoi artist, but from time to time, she will also make some seinen titles, but under a different pen name, Mizu Sahara. To western audiences, Yumeka’s most popular work are titles like “Same Cell Organism” and “The Day I Became a Butterfly”, and her Sahara persona is known for being the author of “Voices of a Distant Star” and “My Girl”. For this review though, we’re going to be looking into the latest title from Sahara, “A Tail’s Tale” or “Okashiratsuki”.

by clicking on the image below

“A Tail’s Tale” is essentially a high school romance between two main characters, Nachi Hiyama and Kaisei Utsumi. Like any romance protagonists, the two actually don’t fit in too well at school. Nachi has a weird skin condition that leaves her with a pale complexion,...

Team Sanda or Gaira? ‘The War of the Gargantuas’ Dares to Ask Which Kaiju Monsters Have Souls
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

In October 2024, we’re doing the Midnight Movie Monster Mash with films that challenge our understanding of evil characters and creatures just in time for Halloween.

First, read the spoiler-free Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, come back for the Bite: a breakdown of all the spoiler-y bits you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.

The Bait: Kaiju Cain and Abel Take Tokyo

As a horror and sci-fi subgenre, Kaiju was built on the promise of towering monsters threatening to squish entire cities on a whim. From North Korea’s bonkers “Pulgasari” (1995) to the global phenomenon that is Godzilla and the MonsterVerse, you’d be hard-pressed to find a mega-monster flick that doesn’t classify as midnight in some way.

But even...

Set Photo From The Walking Dead Finale's Original Ending Reveals Adult Versions Of Judith And Rj Grimes
Image
From the pilot episode to the recent series finale, Judith Grimes has been a handy bellwether for how much time has passed in "The Walking Dead." She started out as just an embryo, the result of a dalliance between Lori Grimes and Shane Walsh. Judith was finally born in a rather traumatic episode of "The Walking Dead" season 3, and steadily grew into a toddler over the next few seasons. A six-year time jump in the middle of season 9 boosted her to nine years old, and by the time the show signed off with season 11's "Rest in Peace," Judith is approximately 11 or 12 years old.

She also has a little brother, Rick Grimes Jr. (aka Rj), the result of Rick Grimes Sr. and Michonne coupling up. As of the end of the series, however, Rick Sr. still has no idea that he has a son, since he was blown off a...
