Nearly two years have gone by since we heard that Dafne Keen of Logan and His Dark Materials and Sophie Nélisse of Yellowjackets and The Book Thief had signed on to star in Whistle, the latest horror film from The Hallow and The Nun director Corin Hardy. Filming took place in Ontario, Canada at the end of 2023 – and now, the movie is about ready to make its way out into the world. It was recently announced that Shudder and Independent Film Company had picked up the distribution rights, and while a specific release date has yet to be confirmed (we only know the movie is coming to theatres sometime in 2026), a teaser trailer has now dropped online. Its premise is a bit unusual, but the teaser reveals just how freaky the film could very well be, filled with some intense and horrific moments. The preview also touts how the film comes from the executive producers of The Monkey, Evil Dead Rise, and Longlegs. Check out the video below.

Justin Linis a filmmaker now synonymous with the Fast & Furious franchise, having directed six installments, including the fan favorite, Tokyo Drift. What many might not know, though, is that his roots are in indie filmmaking, bringing his sophomore film, Better Luck Tomorrow, to Sundance in 2002. In his return to the festival, Lin casts aside high octane and big budgets for his take on real-life missionary John Allen Chau's final days. In Last Days, we follow John Chau (Sky Yang) from his beginnings as an aimless student to his extreme descent into missionary life that led him to North Sentinel Island.

In 2018, 26-year-old American evangelical missionary John Allen Chau went on the most dangerous mission of his life. He secretly journeyed to North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal in an attempt to convert its small population to Christianity, despite their strident insistence on staying disconnected from the rest of the world. As he tried to make contact with the people of the island, he was killed by arrows. His body was never recovered.
Now, Justin Lin’s Last Days seeks out to provide a coherent characterization of the young evangelical. Chau (Sky Yang) is presented in this misaligned attempt at character-based drama as an over-eager obsessive who never knew how to exercise caution or stop proclaiming his passion for Jesus to the world. A passionate evangelical from a comfortable California suburb, he doesn’t appear to have ever had or wanted any other profession than carrying the gospel to...

Plot: The true story of John Allen Chau (Sky Yang), a devout American Christian missionary who was killed while trying to contact an isolated tribe on North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean.
Review: Justin Lin is best known nowadays for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Justin Lin is no stranger to making movies built around spectacle. After all, he directed more Fast & Furious movies than any director working today before stepping away from the franchise (twice). He returns to something much smaller scale after his “Fast X” exit with “Last Days,” a narrative feature based on the true story of American missionary John Allen Chau, who visited and was killed by the isolated Indigenous Sentinelese people on their island off the coast of India after he tried to convert them. While this project seems like it could provide a fresh start for Lin and a return to his roots — he launched his career at Sundance with the indie drama “Better Luck Tomorrow” — it ultimately falls flat.
Unfortunately, instead of using the opportunity to offer up a nuanced, more incisive portrait of the man beyond the headlines, “Last Days” is a film that is so contrived,...

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains spoilers.
You’ve seen it so often, you might roll your eyes, but in “Last Days,” it really happens: American missionary John Allen Chau could have died as he approached North Sentinel Island, had the Bible in his breast pocket not absorbed the blow of a hostile Sentinelese arrow. What was Chau doing halfway around the globe, trying to convert a tribe that had nearly zero contact with the outside world? That’s the mystery director Justin Lin attempts to solve with “Last Days,” prompting an unexpected return to Sundance more than two decades after “Better Luck Tomorrow” launched his career there.
In the interim, Lin has directed no fewer than five “Fast & Furious” movies, which makes this independent production a conspicuous downshift from exorbitantly budgeted studio fare. Chau’s story has been told multiple times, from the Outside magazine article that served...

Justin Lin is best known as the filmmaker behind the revitalization of the Fast & Furious franchise, starting with Tokyo Drift and including the fan-favorite Fast Five. However, after departing the franchise, he decided to return to his independent roots with Last Days, a film based on a powerful story. Unfortunately for Lin, this is not a particularly auspicious return to less spectacle-driven fare.
Last Days Review
Last Days is a dramatization of the final days in the life of John Allen Chau, a 26-year-old Christian mercenary who traveled to North Sentinel Island in the hopes of reaching the North Sentinelese — one of the most isolated native tribes in the world. It’s a fascinating story that has tons of articles and books about it, but Last Days seeks to give Chau’s tale the big-screen treatment.

Director Justin Lin was last at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 with his breakout indie teen crime drama Better Luck Tomorrow. Twenty-three years later, he is back with yet another indie project, Last Days, and clearly hoping to rekindle the fire that got him attention in the first place. Since 2006’s Tokyo Drift, Lin has been the go-to guy for the Fast & Furious franchise with five of them, most recently Fast 9 in 2019, as well as the most recent big-screen film in another hugely popular franchise, 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond.
Now this veteran director, after a few stops and starts and financing woes, has managed to do a film on his own terms again. And the appeal of making it is obvious, not only because it focuses on a young Asian–American young man and his Chinese immigrant father, but because it definitely affords him the opportunity to tell a...

Justin Lin's latest movie, Last Days, makes its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival today in Park City, Utah, but if it hadn't been for Keanu Reeves, the Fast & Furious director might not be screening his film at all. Lin tackles the subject of John Allen Chau in the biographical drama, chronicling the events that led up to the young missionary attempting to make contact with a remote tribe living on an island in the Indian Ocean.
Speaking with The Wrap during the Sundance festivities, Lin shared with the outlet that there was a moment he wasn't sure Last Days was ever going to get made after financing for the project fell apart. That's often the case with independent productions, but in this situation, it was Keanu Reeves who came to the rescue not because he was looking for any sort of producing credit, but simply because he wanted to help.

When director Justin Lin’s new indie feature “Last Days,” about 25-year-old missionary John Chau who was killed when he made contact with an isolated tribe, ran into financial woes, the filmmaker (also known for blockbusters in franchises like “Fast and Furious” and “Star Trek”) fortuitously got a call from Keanu Reeves.
Sitting with TheWrap’s Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Lin shared that the film ran into trouble while getting off the ground. Reeves helped turn things around.
“It was this one moment where everything fell apart,” Lin said. “I think with all independent experiences you just don’t know. It’s a roller coaster. At that point, I thought it was all going to be done. We have angels along the way that come and really help us. In this case, I got a call from Keanu Reeves who heard that...

The Sundance Film Festival has been a launchpad for many directors, including Justin Lin, whose debut film Better Luck Tomorrow premiered there in 2002. The movie, about ambitious Asian American teens dabbling in crime, earned critical praise, including a glowing review from Roger Ebert, who called Lin ‘a rising star’ and compared the film’s polish to that of big-budget productions.
After Better Luck Tomorrow, Lin’s career skyrocketed. He directed Tokyo Drift, the third film in the Fast & Furious series, and turned the franchise into a global phenomenon with five entries under his belt.
Alongside those, he directed Star Trek Beyond and worked on TV hits like Community and True Detective. Lin credits his Sundance debut with opening the door to a wide range of opportunities, saying, ‘I just wanted to try everything.’
Now, after two decades of blockbuster projects, Lin is back at Sundance with Last Days, his first indie film in years.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” movies are back, and this time they’re longer than ever. Not better, for the most part. Just longer. Unlike many director’s cuts — including Snyder’s own “Justice League” — the updated versions of “Rebel Moon” don’t change the narrative very much. There’s a little more backstory and a lot more fake-looking CGI blood, but “Rebel Moon — Chapter 1: Chalice of Blood” and “Rebel Moon — Chapter 2: Curse of Forgiveness” tell the same tale as before and make about as much of an impact.
The story of “Rebel Moon,” in case you missed it the first time, tells the tale of Veldt, a small farming village in outer space. When the evil Motherworld comes to take the town’s grain, a fugitive in their midst named Kora (Sofia Boutella) embarks on an epic quest to find warriors who will risk their lives to save her village,...

Plot: Delve further into the mythology and madness of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi saga in the viciously sexier, bloodier world of Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora, a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war who share a common need for redemption and revenge. Snyder said that there would be an hour of extra content in each of these director’s cuts – and now the Netflix listings for the director’s cuts, which sport the titles Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness have revealed just how much more Rebel Moon we’re going to be getting when these versions of the movies drop onto the streaming service on August 2nd. Neither of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon movies received an overly warm response from critics or, for that matter, sci-fi fans. Now, though, both Part One: A Child of Fire and Part Two: The Scargiver are getting a second chance on Netflix with R-Rated director's cuts.
According to the Justice League helmer, these will allow fans to "experience Rebel Moon the way I've envisioned it," a peculiar statement when the first two versions being released on streaming (rather than in theaters) should have meant Snyder had the creative freedom to do as he saw fit.

We’ve known from the start that director Zack Snyder intended to released extended director’s cuts of his movies Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) and Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver (read our review of that one Here), which were rated PG-13 in their shorter form. At the start of this month, we learned that the director’s cut of Rebel Moon: Part One has been given a R rating for brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language. Now the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that the director’s cut of Rebel Moon: Part Two has been rated R for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, strong sexuality, nudity and some language.
We don’t know a release date for the director’s cuts just yet, but Snyder has said that the director’s cuts...

Despite being lambasted by critics, the Rebel Moon movies have pulled in a lot of viewers and performed very well for Netflix, which means we will most...
