‘Prom Dates’ Review: A Pact Goes Pear-Shaped in More Ways Than One in Hulu’s Reductive Raunch-Com
Image
In “Prom Dates,” two high school besties are sent reeling after their carefully orchestrated plans for the future take an abrupt turn, forcing them on a wild overnight adventure across town. If this set-up sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because director Kim O. Nguyen and screenwriter D.J. Mausner have combined a handful of ingredients from “Booksmart” and mixed them with some of the farcical odyssey of “After Hours.” However, unlike this teen raunch-com’s brilliantly conceived inspirations, its main friendship dynamic and ensuing shenanigans fail to resonate due to sloppy character construction and a cadre of cringe-worthy circumstances.

As innocent middle schoolers, Hannah (Millie Thorpe) and Jess (Hailey Philip) took a blood oath – one that went hilariously awry – to make their prom night the best night of their lives. But as seniors, the besties are finding that making good on their pact might prove difficult. Hannah (Julia Lester) is struggling with her sexuality,...

Prom Dates review – grating high school comedy is a low-rent disaster

Junky romp from producer Kevin Hart sees two teens desperately search for prom dates with unfunny results

There are good reasons why many American teens stress about prom: it’s expensive, heightened, fraught with status and identity; the photos will haunt you forever; it’s a coming-of-age milestone freighted with significance, thanks in part to countless films and TV shows in which teens stress about prom. To that canon there is now a new throwaway entry: Hulu’s Prom Dates, a cringeworthy comedy produced by Kevin Hart, which posits that in the year 2024, two seemingly self-possessed girls sincerely believe that having a prom date – any prom date, but especially a cool one – is the single most important thing in the world. That it’s the one reason to stay in a cartoonishly terrible relationship, or go on a fishing expedition in search of passable strangers to drag back for one night in high school.

Kyle Newman
Ruby Rose & Hari Nef & Paris Berelc in eSports Comedy '1Up' Trailer
Kyle Newman
"You never go full chicken, Lilly!" Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an eSports comedy titled 1Up, the latest from filmmaker Kyle Newman (of Fanboys and Barely Lethal previously). The film is about a gamer who quits her college sports team due to sexism from all the men, and decides to start her own team to compete in the league and beat the men. This borrows the classic 90s sports comedy movie structure where a frustrated but talented player breaks off and creates an underdog team as they fight to take down their former teammates - except that this is set in the eSports world where racism & sexism is still rampant. Paris Berelc stars as "V", for Vivian, and is joined by Ruby Rose, Hari Nef, Madison Baines, Lolita Milena, D.J. Mausner, Taylor Zakhar Perez, & Naomi Kyle. It does look like direct-to-video quality, but might still be funny enough to enjoy.
