As My Hero Academiaprepares to close the curtain for the anime’s final season, it’s given fans enough time to reflect upon the highs and lows of the series. Not every installment of the franchise proved to be a sensational hit, but one important member of the production steps in to defend the most controversial arc, The Cultural Festival.
The Culture Festival was a surprising shift in tone and pacing for anyone not familiar with the manga’s storybeats. After the heavy and climactic conclusion to the Shie Hassaikai Arc involving the students’ confrontation with Kai Chisaki and his criminal organization, My Hero Academia then focuses on the students preparing for school activities back in a normal setting.

In March 1999, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure creator Hirohiko Araki published the final installment of "Golden Wind" -- one of the manga's most memorable story arcs. Recently, Viz Media announced its acquisition of the arc's official light novel sequel, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Purple Smoke Distortion.
Purple Smoke Distortion is written by Japanese author Kohei Kadono, who bases the story on an original concept developed by Araki. Initially published in Japan on Sept. 16, 2011, the novel is finally receiving an official English translation by Viz. As detailed on X (formerly Twitter), Purple Smoke Distortion's narrative is set directly after Golden Wind and revolves primarily around Pannacotta Fugo, a former member of the Passione crime organization. In addition to spotlighting the new volume on social media, Viz Media has also made it available to pre-order on Amazon for approximately US$28.00 (tax not included). According to the listing, the title's official release is scheduled for Apr.

My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi has finally gotten some rest following the big ending of his hit series last year, and it turns out he's already working on his next big series. While details are sparse, Horikoshi has confirmed he's hard at work on a new series, which will do something My Hero Academia never could.
Horikoshi was a relative newcomer when My Hero Academia took off, having been in the manga industry for a little while but not having had a real hit to his name. 10 years on, however, and Horikoshi is one of the most well-known mangaka in the entire world, and his next project is highly anticipated by fans of My Hero Academia.

Since Kohei Horikoshi’sMy Hero Academia debut in 2016, the anime’s evident success has cemented its legacy as a shōnen favorite with its striking take on hero culture that fundamentally differs from the classic Western formula. Lately, the series has been under intense criticism as a result of the manga’s controversial ending.
These criticisms pose a threat to the franchise’s cultural footprint, but it seems the anime’s final season may fix some controversial moments detailed in the source material. At Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles this past weekend, Kohei Horikoshi revealed to ScreenRant that the final season will feature new scenes exclusive only to the anime.
Now that the seasoned mangaka’s preoccupation with the manga is over, Kohei Horikoshi will be heavily involved in the title’s final season production, where he will steer the story’s momentum in a different direction that may receive better reception.

My Hero Academia fans now know a surprising new detail regarding Dabi’s origins. The series creator, Kohei Horikoshi, revealed that the fan-favorite villain was originally designed as a direct homage to Marvel’s Ghost Rider. Although the concept was ultimately dropped, Dabi was once envisioned with a ride that blazed with his flames, along with a “giant patron” to back him.
This initial vision would have strongly reflected Ghost Rider’s supernatural edge. A subtle nod to this still exists in the series through Dabi’s brief mention of motion sickness during the Overhaul arc, which has been stated to be a leftover from when he was meant to ride into battles.

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular Shonen manga and anime series of all time. Rightfully so, as Kohei Horikoshi’s masterpiece represents the true essence of classic Shonen series.
Be it a compact narrative, thrill, or an action-packed storyline, My Hero Academia is a prime example of what made Shonen the reigning king of the anime industry in the first place.
However, there is one key aspect of storytelling that many of the classic Shonen series failed to fully utilize. Unfortunately, Horikoshi’s series, too, had fallen victim to that. The ongoing spin-off, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes by Furuhashi Hideyuki, has only made it glaringly obvious.

The video was posted on Toho animation's official YouTube channel on April 7 and reached the milestone in 11 weeks. This was an anime adaptation of one of my favorite manga, so I couldn't take my eyes off the video and enjoyed it. I was continually overwhelmed by the exhilaration of the battle scenes, the speed with which they moved around in the moonlit night, and the beautiful light effects. My favorite part in the opening video is the scene at the end where the three vigilantes stand in front of the neon sign that says 'All Right.

Since the beginning of the My Hero Academia franchise, quirks have been established as the strongest power structure in the universe. In fact, the original series consistently pointed out in the beginning that it was the only thing missing from Deku’s character development as the protagonist.
However, the spinoff has subtly hinted that maybe quirks are not the most important thing in the world. In fact, the story has established a major character who is still making a significant impact on the plot without any powerful abilities up his sleeve.
This character is none other than Knuckleduster, one of the strongest characters from My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Knuckleduster’s physical prowess and his iconic tools, combined with his wits, are proof that Deku would have become a hero without any quirk, much less the strongest quirk of all in Mha.

My Hero Academia, as a series, made its name from its high-stakes battles, unique characters, and its quirk-based powerscaling method. But creator Kohei Horikoshi envisioned his creation to chart a different direction. He wished to take a deep dive into the concept of heroism, not just through epic fights but also with societal questions that surround being a hero in a world filled with chaos.
While the main series struggled to deliver on this ideology, its spin-off manga, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, is steadily gaining momentum towards Horikoshi’s vision. Introduced as a prequel to the original series, Vigilantes explores the grey area between the Hero Society’s polished front. The story revolves around Koichi Haimawari, a quirkless fanboy, who takes every opportunity to save the innocents from the evildoers.

My Hero Academia fans are learning more about the creation of the hit series now that it's over, thanks to an art exhibition in Japan. The exhibition reveals which part of the story Kohei Horikoshi struggled with the most, and the answer may surprise you.
Kohei Horikoshi is, of course, the creator of My Hero Academia and the writer/artist behind the series. His work is highly influenced by Western properties, like comic book superheroes and Star Wars, to name a few of the more obvious ones. The story of My Hero Academia is far greater than the sum of its parts, however, and as such has become a majorly influential series all its own. It's not unusual to celebrate successful manga series with art exhibitions like this, and this one is notable for featuring a large amount of original art, although photography is prohibited at the exhibition.

After years of speculation and divided fan reactions, My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi has finally addressed the ambiguity surrounding one of the series’ most hotly debated character moments and relationships. In a newly published interview from the My Hero Academia Kohei Art Exhibition pamphlet, Horikoshi breaks his silence on the relationship between Izuku Midoriya and Ochako Uraraka in regard to Chapter #431’s emotional final scenes.
Horikoshi’s comments offer fans insight into why romance hasn’t played a larger role in the series, even as certain relationships became fan favorites. Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, has opened up about one of the most controversial aspects of the Shonen Jump series' controversial epilogue. The final season of the My Hero Academia anime will air this fall.
Horikoshi, who concluded his popular superhero series in December 2024, addressed one of the many critiques fans and critics had about the 38-page epilogue included in Volume 42, the final manga collection. Despite being heavily teased throughout the series -- including the short-lived "Epilogue" arc -- Izuku "Deku" Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka are not officially together by the end of the series. Although the two lovebirds are shown to be holding hands, a definitive confirmation of love, such as a kiss, was denied for the most popular pairing in the series. It's a bitter pill for IzuOcha shippers, especially compared to other Shonen Jump series finales like Undead Unluck that didn't hold back on who ended up with whom.

Shonen is a genre that many love. The question is, what is it about the genre that makes fans get all pumped and fired up? Is it because the protagonists never give up? Or because they never lose a fight, always powering up in dire straits? Whatever it is, the essence of Shonen is to get the viewers to admire the tenacity and the willpower of the characters.
Then what about characters that come off as crybabies? The characters that break out of the set tropes. Many characters in Shonen may not feel very ‘hero-like’; they are deeply emotional and vulnerable. Such traits may not seem to align with Shonen, but this is exactly why such characters are so important. The same can be said for Deku from My Hero Academia.

At the beginning of My Hero Academia, All Might was the #1 hero. By the finale, he had become one of the weakest heroes. This downfall of the strongest character is nothing surprising in anime. It is a long-held tradition, passed down from series to series.
All Might’s existence is what inspired Deku to become a hero. He was the image of hope for civilians, and budding heroes dared to dream of becoming like him. Yet, the greatest character was nerfed off-screen in a battle with All For One. Mha adapted one of the most commonly used tropes in anime, but that doesn’t mean it sits right with fans.

Fans of My Hero Academia are preparing to witness the end of an era. The anime story that has already become a shonen classic is gearing up to debut its final season, and after much anticipation, the first trailer of the final season just dropped. Season 8 of the series will bring the saga of Izuku Midoriya (voiced by Daiki Yamashita in the original Japanese and by Justin Briner in the English dub) and Class 1-a to a climactic close, and it all starts rolling out this October.

If you picked up My Hero Academia: Vigilantes expecting another round of screaming teenagers and power-scaling chaos, surprise: That’s not what you’re getting here. Sure, it’s still a shonen spin-off. But Vigilantes is creating its own laid-back, emotional atmosphere, and quite frankly, that’s what makes it so much better.
It’s not about climbing the hero rankings or unlocking er cool quirks. It’s about this guy with a simple sliding ability, just helping people on the streets of Naruhata. No fame. No ego. Just vibes. And somehow? It hits way harder than the main series.
Koichi from Vigilantes: The hero next door (literally)
Koichi Haimawari from My Hero Academia: Vigilantes isn’t trying to be All Might or anything like that. He’s simply here doing his best to help his neighborhood while staying out of trouble and occasionally being a human skateboard. That’s it.

In a recent comment tied to My Hero Academia’s final art book, creator Kohei Horikoshi stirred the fanbase by teasing the idea of a potential spin-off. The series, which is nearing its anime conclusion, has already left a massive legacy across anime, merchandise, and fandom spaces. But now, it seems Horikoshi may not be entirely ready to close the door, especially if it means exploring the world from a different angle.
The teaser came from an alternate universe (Au) artwork featured in the newly released art book in Japan, according to Shueisha. The steampunk-inspired piece was not just a flashy costume change, it offered a peek into a radically reimagined world. According to Horikoshi, he was working under a tight deadline and did not have time to fully paint the piece. Quirks define everything in the sprawling universe of My Hero Academia. A good quirk can make or break an individual in society. While Kohei Horikoshi has shown us several explosive powers with intricate complexities, he failed to show us how even the most mundane of quirks can be made awesome through creativity. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has taken up this job by showing us the evolution of Koichi Haimawari’s Slide and Glide (a mundane quirk). The simple quirk steals the spotlight, and by the end of the series, it transforms into something extraordinary.
My Hero Academia has always overlooked the potential of simple abilities. Vigilantes, however, has embraced the underwhelming and has crafted a narrative that makes the ordinary feel extraordinary, and even heroic in ways. This is something the main series hasn’t been able to achieve.

My Hero Academia honored Akira Toriyama's legacy with a special illustration published one month after his shocking death in March 2024. This insightful information comes from a recently published My Hero Academia artbook by the series' artist and author, Kōhei Horikoshi.
Released in Japan on June 4, 2025, My Hero Academia Ultra Artworks featured 240 pages of official artwork by series creator Horikoshi that has been released throughout the years. This newly released artbook is more than just a printed collection of what has been available for years, as it also includes commentary by Horikoshi about the creative process behind his most memorable works. One artwork -- a colored illustration for Chapter 419 -- was a surprising tribute to Toriyama's most famous series. The colored page was released in Weekly Shonen Jump in April 2024, one month after the public announcement of Toriyama's death.

Episode 9 of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes revealed something troubling about Koichi Haimawari’s childhood. The episode revealed that the young sliding and gliding vigilante could fly as a child. This ability, however, was buried within his subconscious due to his worried mother disciplining him out of fear of his flying somewhere dangerous.
This action has sparked a heated debate among fans: Shoko Haimawari deliberately suppressed her son’s quirk through physical discipline, thus nerfing him beyond imagination. Koichi’s remarkable quirk devolved due to his mother hitting him with her quirk to stop him.
While a few fans are defending Shoko, calling her a protective mother, we are here to ask them to stop defending her, because the harm caused by her actions has forever nerfed our protagonist. Her approach, while motivated by love, was misguided. Let’s see why My Hero Academia: Vigilantes fans should reconsider defending her and...

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has been lying to us (those are some serious allegations). The gripping spin-off of the wildly popular My Hero Academia has captivated fans with its focus on vigilantism. The anime’s protagonist, Koichi Haimawari, also known as (say it with us) The Crawler, is a vigilante who operates in Naruhata.
For much of the series, we were told that Koichi’s quirk is Slide and Glide, an ability that allows him to slide across surfaces with minimal friction. Koichi uses this quirk to help people out by cleaning trash and chasing small-time criminals in Naruhata.
However, this may not be his real quirk. Episode 9 of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has revealed that everything we know about his quirk is false (kinda). The episode shows Koichi gliding through the air to save Makoto, and this begs the question: What is the true nature of Slide and Glide?...

Okay, so let’s talk about something that is harder than a Detroit Smash to the face. Koichi’s childhood in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Episode 9 gave us some hero moments, some genuinely adorable romance scenes, and, oh boy, some rather tear-inducing flashbacks of Koichi’s troubled childhood, courtesy of his mom. And trust us, this wasn’t your typical ‘strict-but-loving anime parent’ situation. It was rather harsh to witness.
If you ever had the thought, “Well, my parents meant well, I guess,” then Koichi’s past is going to make you feel it. It’s not just rough stuff we’re talking about here; this was full-on emotionally stunting, physically slapping, childhood dream-crushing stuff. But weirdly enough, this dark twist didn’t just break our hearts, it also made Koichi’s character finally soar (literally and metaphorically). So, let’s dive in.

I first came across the universe created by Kohei Horikoshi when My Hero Academia’s anime was first released way back in 2016. It was a unique series, and the hype around it motivated me to go on a journey filled with heroes and the thing that made them special: their quirks. These quirks more or less determined their place in the My Hero Academia world.
The strongest quirk made its user the strongest character in the series, and even though quirkless characters had their place, they were not essential to the main storyline. However, this opinion of mine changed quickly when My Hero Academia: Vigilantes came out with its anime adaptation.
The whole concept of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is based around characters who are either quirkless or have the weakest quirk, but they still manage to make an impact in the world. The best example of this was seen through Knuckleduster’s character,...

With plenty of action-infused bangers and wild assassin stories, the anime landscape is full of energy and hype in 2025. While the big action-packed shonen like Sakamoto Days and My Hero Academia: Vigilantes latch on to the hype with their hero/dad drama and wild vigilante motivations, there is a diamond in the rough, quieter series just waiting to burrow its way into hearts.
Catch Me at the Ballpark is a criminally underrated gem, a comfy slice-of-life contrast to the fight-infused shonen as its story is rooted in baseball vibes and real talks.
There are no fancy powers or epic showdowns; just baseball games, cold beers, stadium cheers, and heartfelt moments. It reminds you that anime can be subjective, and sometimes you don’t need a big explosion to create something beautiful and memorable.

Alright, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has me hooked. This spin-off takes a dive into the messier, street-level side of Hero Society with Koichi’s underdog hustle and Knuckleduster’s brutal smackdowns. It’s gritty, it’s realistic, and it gives us a good look at the cracks in the hero system long before Deku’s time.
And Stain’s rant about how “fake heroes”? It was thought-provoking in Episode 6, and then the Episode 8? Wow! It was like Hideyuki Furuhashi wrote it to show us that Stain was right, as he introduced a new character.
Captain Celebrity, the top-ranked Pro Hero in America, comes to Japan with a huge ego that just annoys me. His pretentious behaviour, his over-the-top behavior, and his entire “oh no I will save everyone” thing are so irritating. I mean, if he epitomized what it means to be a hero, I’m starting to agree with Stain’s point of view.

Hideyuki Furuhashi has established himself as a household figure owing to projects like Mha: Vigilantes. But there are some underrated series from Furuhashi that the anime community might have overlooked.
The 2012 series, K Project, is one such little gem that slipped through the cracks, and it deserves way more love than it got. With a solid 7.45 rating on MyAnimeList shows, the show has this cool mix of supernatural action and mystery.
The story follows a young guy named Yashiro Isana who gets caught up in a crazy world of psychic “Kings” and clans. Sounds intriguing, right? But sadly, it fell off the radar and got drowned out by the bigger shounen hits.
That slow start hides an underappreciated thrilling ride

In the world of My Hero Academia, traditional games hardly exist in their original forms. The Olympics are the biggest sports event in our world, and the same was true in the Mha universe before Quirks became prevalent. I guess once people have quirks like super speed, it becomes useless to find the limits of the human body. People would obviously take advantage of their Quirks to excel in sports.
Thus, common sporting events have been replaced by the U.A. Sports Festival in which students of U.A. High School display their abilities to their fullest. So, rather than exploring the potential of the human body, it focuses on exploring the potential of Quirks. But the appearance of Emperor Yotsuura in Vigilantes made me think of an idea.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is absolutely winning us over, right now! This prequel has Koichi Haimawari, a college dude zipping around using his Slide and Glide Quirk, pulling off a low-key hero stint. Vigilantes has got a cool, gritty comic-book feel.
But you know what is crazy? Fans are losing their minds after witnessing a single scene in Episode 7, where a ‘soccer’ villain, Emperor Yotsuura, is overshadowing Blue Lock, the soccer anime that is supposed to rule the sport.
Are you telling us that a superhero show outshone a sports series at its own game? Sounds crazy but it might be the case as Vigilantes has got people freaking out over some stellar ‘soccer’ moments in their latest episode.

In the world of Western comics and superhero stories, few teams are as iconic as DC Comics’ Justice League. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes seems to agree, as seen by its latest episode in which the show paid tribute to the iconic superhero team. While the anime didn’t name drop the iconic team, the narration and the images used were enough for us to realize who the anime was referring to (either that or it was referring to the Seven from The Boys).
Get ready, y’all, because we are going to dissect this reference and help you understand why such references make My Hero Academia: Vigilantes one of the best superhero anime.

Honestly, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes started off like your typical spin-off: slow, somewhat clunky, and with cameos that shouted, “Hey, do you remember him?” It was like it was trying too hard to be a part of the Mha hype train without really doing anything of its own. But if you held out until the end, you found a secret gem.
Because Vigilantes didn’t just find its footing, it sprinted. The story developed into something gritty, realistic, and really heartfelt. And by the end of the manga? A ton of fans were far more excited about Vigilantes chapters than the main series. The only real problem? That painfully slow start. Oh, and that final battle felt like it dragged forever in real time. But here’s the good news: the anime might be able to fix all of that. For real.
