In preparing for his role in Paramount’s upcoming thriller “The Running Man,” Glen Powell says his first call was to his mentor, Tom Cruise, who is also well known for his running style. Powell said on Thursday at CinemaCon that he was advised, “film yourself running as soon as possible. You don’t look as cool as you think you do,” which got a big laugh from the audience.
“The Running Man” star joined director Edgar Wright and cast members Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo to discuss the upcoming action thriller (production wrapped last week) and the theatrical experience, in conversation with Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley.
Powell said his enthusiasm for cinema was elevated further from watching his friend Cruise. “He’s a guy that doesn’t hide his excitement about what this means, you know, the theatrical experience, and working hard and investing and putting your body...

Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is racing to a prime lunchtime spot at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
The filmmaker will join the stars of his Paramount Pictures action thriller — Glen Powell, Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo — for CinemaCon’s creative community luncheon scheduled for April 3 inside Caesars Palace’s Octavius Ballroom. The lunch conversation, typically held on the final day of the convention, will be moderated by Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley. Past participants include Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Elizabeth Banks, Jerry Bruckheimer, Patty Jenkins and Jon M. Chu. The annual lunch is sponsored by Fathom Entertainment, Mobile Moviegoing and BeforeTheMovie.
It’s not Powell’s only commitment that day. The in-demand multi-hyphenate is also set to receive star of the year honors later that night during the Big Screen Achievement Awards. Powell, who has just boarded Barry Jenkins’ The Natural Order at Universal, snags the prize after Netflix’s Hit Man,...

Following the film winning the TIFF People’s Choice Award last fall, audiences are getting their first official look at Mike Flanagan’s life-affirming flick “The Life of Chuck.”
Flanagan trades the usual scares of “Doctor Sleep” and “The Haunting of Hill House” for a story about life and what it means to move forward when all hope is lost. Adapted from Stephen King’s novella, “The Life of Chuck” is split into three distinct parts and told in reverse order, following the mysterious life of seemingly ordinary accountant Chuck Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). The cast also includes Jacob Tremblay, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthew Lillard, Karen Gillan and Mia Sara, with Nick Offerman narrating.
“The universe is large and it contains multitudes, but it also contains me,” Chuck says in the teaser as he stands on the street in his suit.

Issa Rae has been vocal about her disappointment with Hollywood’s stalled efforts to tell a wider array of stories. And the situation on that front has grown even more dire since she last opined on the subject.
During a Saturday keynote conversation at South by Southwest, the creator and actress revisited the subject in the wake of many Hollywood’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts shuttering or rebranding in the wake of the second Trump administration’s hard-line stance against Dei. “I think diversity needs a better publicist,” said Rae. “The anti-dei, the immediate retraction of any efforts to level the playing field and focus on our stories, I think it [comes from] a big misunderstanding and a fear.”
Rae went on to joke that her own publicist was too busy to take diversity on as a client.
Echoing some of her past frustrations, she also spoke a bit more optimistically about Hollywood’s executive ranks.

Issa Rae is working to spotlight the history of Black television with her upcoming HBO docuseries “Seen & Heard,” which she discussed at length in a keynote conversation at SXSW.
The moderator, Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley, described the first episode of “Seen & Heard” as focusing on how studios in the past “used Black audiences” and then “abandoned them as soon as it was convenient.” Rae said she wanted to dive into that history because “it sounds like a conspiracy” on the surface, but producing the documentary proved to her just how that trend had played out.
“It’s one thing to say it. You might have heard someone say that in the history of television and the history of particular networks,” Rae said. “But to have the actual creators, showrunners and writers chronicle the history of that is undeniable. We wanted to make a comprehensive history and showcase, with evidence,...

There’s a new frontrunner in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Director: Brady Corbet for “The Brutalist.”
The American filmmaker has broken his tie with Sean Baker (“Anora”) to claim the No. 1 position on our chart for the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Note that it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things could keep changing as our experts, editors, and users continue to update their predictions.
The A24 fictional drama centers around Adrien Brody‘s character László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor who emigrates to the United States in the 1940s in the hopes of achieving the American Dream. While László is waiting for his wife (Felicity Jones) to join him, he starts working with his cousin (Alessandro Nivola) at a furniture store, and he eventually comes into contact with a wealthy industrialist (Guy Pearce).

Ridley Scott may not have been present for the first major screening of “Gladiator II” on Friday night on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles, but the 86-year-old director was the favorite topic of conversation for stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen and Fred Hechinger in the post-screening Q&a.
Mescal — who plays Lucius Verus, the grown son of Russell Crowe’s character from the first “Gladiator,” released in 2000 — spoke in awe about Scott’s ability to shoot the film’s elaborate opening battle sequence, which involved Pedro Pascal’s Roman general leading a fleet of ships invading a city on the North African coast.
“I think we shot that over nine days,” the actor said. “I don’t know any other director who could do that.”
Mescal was, understandably, nervous before the first shot.

“Gladiator II” screened for the first time on Friday, October 18 at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, and based on early reactions on social media from film critics and influencers, it is “a big, bloody and bad ass action spectacle,” a “true epic and Ridley Scott’s best in years,” and an all-caps “Masterpiece.”
Though official reviews are embargoed until a later date, the early reactions highlighted Scott’s direction, Mescal, Pascal, and Washington’s performances, and the overall production values of the sequel worthy of its Oscar-winning predecessor.

Oscar producers Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, Molly McNearney and Rob Paine, as well as music director Rickey Minor are days away from the 96th Academy Awards.
But they took time out on Wednesday afternoon to share insight into what to expect from Sunday’s ceremony. In a conversation moderated by Jacqueline Coley, Awards Editor at Rotten Tomatoes, Kapoor said this year’s theme is “human connection, emotion, inspiration and creativity.”
A major highlight that has both fans and producers excited is the news of five former winners presenting to the five nominees. The idea was inspired by Bill Condon when he produced the 81st Academy Awards. Kapoor said the team had done a deep dive into past ceremonies and that stuck with them the most. Said Kapoor, “It was this lovely storytelling and again it came down to connection. It was past winners speaking to present nominees and that lovely connection and that human interaction.

The media was not quick to embrace Black creatives nor has Juneteenth long been something on its radar. But as different voices enter the culturally and politically shifting landscape, the newly recognized federal holiday — which honors the emancipation of the last enslaved people here in the United States on June 19 — could, or at the very least should, pop up more on screens large and small.
Channing Godfrey Peoples made her directorial debut against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020 with “Miss Juneteenth“: a feature film starring Nicole Beharie and Alexis Chikaeze as a mother-daughter pair navigating their opposing dreams for the young girl’s future. Before that, “Juneteenth” was the title of Season 1, Episode 9 in Donald Glover’s beloved “Atlanta”: a boundary-breaking FX dramedy about Blackness and celebrity with a surrealist twist.

Wright recently spoke out at a Q&a following a SAG Awards screening of the new Marvel Studios blockbuster alongside co-stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livinalli and filmmaker Ryan Coogler, moderated by Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley.
“I remember just that moment of going to my phone and seeing every possible American number calling me,” Wright recalls about that tragic and confusing day. “I went to my email and someone was saying, ‘My condolences.’ And I’m like, my condolences for what? I just spoke to you last night about a script, why are you emailing me that?
