New ‘Queens of the Dead’ Image Reveals a New Zombie Classic From George A. Romero's Daughter [Exclusive]
Image
Filmmaker Tina Romero is joining the family business. The daughter of the late, great George A. Romero, who might be best known as the visionary behind Night of the Living Dead, will soon release a zombie movie of her own — albeit with an extra touch of flair. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re thrilled to share an image from the director’s upcoming production, Queens of the Dead. Set for a theatrical arrival this fall, the film, which took home the coveted Audience Award at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, follows a mixed group of strangers and friends who are out for an evening of partying when all hell breaks loose and the zombie apocalypse steps out into the night. Together, this mismatched assortment of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies will need to put their differences aside if they have any hopes of making...

Queens of the Dead: zombie movie from George A. Romero’s daughter secures North American distribution
George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and recently, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she’s making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. That movie had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last month – and won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film there! Now, Deadline reports that it has secured North American distribution through Independent Film Company (formerly IFC) and the Shudder streaming service. A specific release date has not yet been announced, but Independent Film Company has let it be known that they...

‘Queens of the Dead’ – Tina Romero’s Zombie Movie Getting a Theatrical Release This Fall
Tina Romero
Tina Romero, the daughter of late horror master George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead), makes her own mark on the zombie genre with Queens of the Dead, and Deadline reports this morning that the film has been acquired by Independent Film Company and Shudder.

Here in North America, Queens of the Dead will shamble into theaters in Fall 2025.

Shudder’s Director of Acquisitions and Productions, Adam Koehler, said in a statement, “We’re beyond thrilled to bring this wildly original vision to audiences—a fearless, glam-drenched ride that’s as funny as it is ferocious. With razor-sharp direction and a fierce cast, Queens of the Dead is a thrilling new chapter in a legacy of horror royalty.”

“The zombie apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play in when it comes to social commentary. I can’t be my dad’s daughter without making an attempt at saying something with zombies,...

Tina Romero’s ‘Queens Of The Dead’ Acquired By Independent Film Company & Shudder
Tomas Matos and Dominique Jackson in Queens of the Dead (2025)
Exclusive: Independent Film Company (formerly IFC) and Shudder have acquired North American rights to the horror comedy Queens of the Dead from filmmaker Tina Romero, daughter of legendary “Godfather of Zombies” George A. Romero.

Paying tribute to the zombies from the elder Romero’s classic zombie films with a fresh, contemporary and queer twist, the film will be released in theaters this fall, after winning the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film in its Tribeca world premiere.

In Romero’s debut feature co-written with comedian Erin Judge, on which we were first to report last July, a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead.

The film’s ensemble includes Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Jaquel Spivey...

Queens of the Dead Review: Slaying, Stumbling, and Surviving
Image
Just when you think the zombie genre has exhausted every possible permutation, a film like Queens of the Dead struts in, covered in glitter and gore, to prove you wrong. This is the feature debut from Tina Romero, and yes, that name carries weight. But while she works in the sandbox her father George A. Romero built, she is building a very different kind of castle.

This film trades bleak social dread for backstage bedlam, setting its story in a struggling drag club on the precipice of a make-or-break show. The curtain is about to rise when the world outside ends, trapping a motley crew of performers inside with their wits, their fabulousness, and an invading horde of the undead. It’s a comedy-forward horror movie that understands survival is a performance in itself.

The Ensemble in the Spotlight

A film set almost entirely in one location lives or dies by its characters,...

Tribeca 2025 Review: Queens Of The Dead, A Next Gen Romero Spawns A Drag Zombie Winner
Image
A struggling drag club transforms into ground zero for a group of plucky survivors during a zombie infestation in Tina Romero’s fantastic debut feature, Queens of the Dead. Dre is desperate. Their drag club had booked one of New York’s hottest queens, Yasmine (Dominique Jackson), in the hopes of drumming some much needed business, but a last-minute cancelation puts them in a tight spot. The house queen, Ginsey (Andrew “Nina West” Levitt) and her catty crew of dancers/wannabes are left to pick up the pieces. That is, unless the prodigal queen Sam/Samoncé (Jaquel Spivey) is willing to return to the life after a panic attack sent them running toward a normal life as a nurse. Amidst the drama, a viral...

Queens of the Dead premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this month.

“The zombie apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play in when it comes to social commentary. I can’t be my dad’s daughter without making an attempt at saying something with zombies,” Romero tells EW. “I did want this to be a film in which I am paying homage to the world and the monster he created, but I’m also introducing my own voice.”

Romero continues, “It’s very much not a film he would make, but it is using his vocabulary and is playing by his rules. As far as the queer element,...

Alex Consani Reflects On Being the First Trans Model to Walk In a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
Image
Alex Consani made history a couple weeks ago while walking in the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The 21-year-old model was the first Trans model to walk in the show, followed by Valentino Sampaio moments later.

In a new magazine interview, Alex looked back on that historic moment, drawing inspiration from Trans models before her and being aware of what her hyper-visibility means.

Keep reading to find out more…

“That was a really impactful moment,” she told Teen Vogue for the October cover story. “It’s crazy, though, because I didn’t even realize I was the first to walk until after I walked the show. I thought that Valentina had already walked a while ago, so having that in my mind took the pressure away.”

“At this level, [there] haven’t been any references,” Alex added. “It’s really impactful to be [among] the first [to walk for Victoria's Secret] because I’m able to take the hate.

‘Fantasmas’ Is Operating on a Level of Brilliance Beyond the Bizarre
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following article contains light spoilers for “Fantasmas” through Episode 3, “Toilets.”]

Sitting in an office as transparently fake as any late-night talk show set, Julio Torres pitches his idea of Crayola’s next great crayon color: clear. The executives across from him are dubious, even angry at his proposal. “Clear isn’t a color,” one shouts. “If it isn’t a color, what do you call this?” Julio asks, gesturing to absolutely nothing. “Call what?” the suit asks. “The space between us — the emotional space,” Julio says, before waxing poetic (as he has before) about a clear glass of water, clear smells, and the clear memories all around them. “Some things aren’t one of the normal colors,” he says. “They don’t play by the rules of the rainbow. […] To color something clear is to acknowledge that some things are different, and that’s just fine.”

Instantly, a smile spread across my face. “Fantasmas,” from start to finish,...

The National LGBTQ Task Force — a nonprofit that describes itself as “the progressive voice of the LGBTQ movement” — has set its sights on Miami as the host city for the 27th annual Task Force Gala on Oct. 14. The ceremony, presented by St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church, will honor Pose breakout Dominique Jackson with a national leadership award during a program that also features co-hosts Latrice Royale and Dyllón Burnside and performances by Anne Steele, Robbie Elias and Tango Libertad.

Taking place in a year that marks the Task Force’s 50th anniversary and in October which marks LGBTQ history month, the event is being presented with the theme “Forever Strong, Unapologetically Queer,” a sentiment that can be applied to the org’s choice to host such an event in Florida, a state that has emerged as a battleground in the fight between conservative lawmakers and LGBTQ citizens.

American Horror Stories season 3 teaser trailer previews four-episode Halloween event
American Horror Stories (2021)
American Horror Stories, a streaming series spin-off from FX’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story, began with a seven episode first season in 2021, and an eight episode second season followed in 2022. For the upcoming third season, the episode count has been shortened to just four – and all four episodes of American Horror Stories season 3 are set to drop on the Hulu streaming service on October 26th! With that date just three weeks away, a teaser trailer has arrived online to give a quick preview of the Halloween (or “Huluween”) event. You can watch it in the embed above.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the same duo that’s responsible for American Horror Story, this series is a weekly hourlong anthology that features a different horror story, some of which call back to the original series, in each contained episode. Obviously the “weekly” part of that description...

‘American Horror Story’ Needs Kim Kardashian
Image
Pregnancy and its various complications have always been fertile ground when it comes to horror. From devil children to… well, it’s always devil children, isn’t it? Which is why the most recent season of American Horror Story: Delicate — which deals with the heartbreaking trials and errors of IVF — could have easily been a joyless slog. Haven’t we seen enough movies where a woman has the audacity to want a child, only to give birth to Damien? Thank God, then, for Kim Kardashian.

Say what you will about Ryan Murphy’s various foibles,...

American Horror Stories season 3 is a four-episode Halloween event on Hulu

American Horror Stories, a streaming series spin-off from FX’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story, began with a seven episode first season in 2021, and an eight episode second season followed in 2022. Both of those seasons had July premiere dates, but obviously that wasn’t the case for season 3. Instead, all four episodes of American Horror Stories season 3 are set to drop on the Hulu streaming service on October 26th, and its premiere is being promoted as a special Halloween event. Actually, they’re calling it a “Huluween event”.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the same duo that’s responsible for American Horror Story, this series is a weekly hourlong anthology that features a different horror story, some of which call back to the original series, in each contained episode. Obviously the “weekly” part of that description is being set aside for the new season.

American Horror Stories season 3: Lisa Rinna cast in anthology series
Image
Lisa Rinna is best known for playing the characters of Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Melrose Place… or at least she was, until she was featured on eight seasons of the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. That may be what most viewers recognize her from these days. But Rinna recently left that Real Housewives show, and now Deadline reports that she has signed on to appear in an episode of the Hulu horror anthology series American Horror Stories.

The episode Rinna will be in is titled Tapeworm, and most of the filming of that episode was already completed before Deadline confirmed her involvement. That’s the only information that’s available at this time.

American Horror Stories is a streaming series spin-off from FX’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story. Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the same...

2023 Emmy nominations ballot: See the 51 Best Limited Series contenders from ‘Accused’ to ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’
Image
This year’s first-round Primetime Emmy nominations ballot includes a total of 51 Best Limited Series hopefuls. This is down from 2022’s unusually high total of 61, yet still much higher than 2021’s 37, 2020’s 41, and 2019’s 35.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members’ selections can now not be greater than the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be five.

Unlike comedy and drama series, which simply appear on the ballot by name, the limited series submissions include plot descriptions and cast lists. Which of the shows listed below do you think will land in the final lineup on...

Inside TikTok Star Dylan Mulvaney’s Rainbow Room Debut
Image
A year ago Monday, Dylan Mulvaney came out as a trans woman and began chronicling her journey on TikTok with her “Days of Girlhood” series.

To celebrate her one-year anniversary, Mulvaney hosted a cabaret show, “Dylan Mulvaney’s Day 365 Live!,” at the iconic Rainbow Room in New York. Before the show, she spoke with Variety on the red carpet about what she’s learned from her very public and unexpected journey.

“It was such an accident, but a very happy one,” Mulvaney told Variety on Monday night. “Going in, I had no idea just how vulnerable I would get and how much I had to learn about womanhood.”

The 80-minute variety show began with a pre-recorded clip of Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) comforting Mulvaney in her dressing room. From there, Mulvaney eagerly entered from the balcony at the back of the Rainbow Room and sang a series of Kate Bush covers.

Her friends fill in dozens of rows, her father is front and center. For the next hour and change, she will sing, dance, cry, have multiple costume changes, and be held by a family that has chosen her again and again. It’s not her wedding. Or her birthday. TikTok Star Dylan Mulvaney On Coming Out As Trans To A ‘Very Conservative Family’ At Age 4
Image
Dylan Mulvaney is celebrating one year of transitioning by reflecting on what it was like to come out as trans at age four and shares an encouraging message to trans youth.

The 26-year-old TikTok star, who accepted the Groundbreaker Award at last month’s Queerties, recalled discovering her gender identity growing up in a “very conservative family.”

“I came out to my mom at [age] 4. I told her, ‘I’m a girl.’ We were very, very religious so she was like, ‘God doesn’t make mistakes.’ But I didn’t know that I could transition. I didn’t know that there were options or resources,” Mulvaney said on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.

Kerry Washington, Zoe Kravitz, Rosario Dawson, SAG-AFTRA and More Urge Congress to Pass Crown Act
Image
Kerry Washington, Zoë Kravitz, Rosario Dawson, Don Cheadle and Niecy Nash-Betts were among the 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members who urged Congress to pass the Crown Act, which prohibits discrimination based on hair style and texture.

In a strongly worded letter sent to the U.S. Senate, SAG-AFTRA encouraged Congress to pass the bill, as it is an essential step to making all workplaces safe for people of color, and it is consistent with the Guild’s efforts to advance equity and inclusion in the media and entertainment industry.

The Crown Act stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.

“The Crown Act is a huge step in ending discrimination based on hair in public education and work spaces,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “People should feel free to style their hair how they feel most comfortable without the threat of prejudice and unequal treatment. The Crown Act will protect...

“American Horror Stories” Review – ‘Bloody Mary’ Gets Lost In Its Own Reflection
Image
‘American Horror Stories’ offers its unique take on a classic trope, but thin characters and predictable plotting result in a shattered episode.

“You light a candle in a room and then you say her name three times…”

There’s a natural shorthand that exists with creepy characters like Bloody Mary that have become omnipresent in pop culture. Not only are most American Horror Story audiences aware of Bloody Mary’s urban legend, but there’s been a demand to see her worked into the series for some time now. The twisted “monkey’s paw” logic that accompanies Bloody Mary and similar specters is ripe material for the horror genre to explore and low-rent Blumhouse material like Wish Upon or Truth or Dare (or Shudder’s Kandisha) do exactly that. American Horror Stories finally finds a suitable story to explore this staple, but “Bloody Mary” is arguably the weakest application of this premise.

"Pose" Alum Dominique Jackson Says a Woman Once Bowed Down to Her at an Airport
Image
Fans may know her as Elektra Abundance-Evangelista, the fierce house mom from beloved series "Pose" with all the confidence in the world and the Naomi Campbell-esque looks to go with it. But while she's just as iconic in real life, Dominique Jackson's wisdom goes far beyond her glamorous persona.

Her portrayal of a beautiful Black trans woman on a major TV show catapulted Jackson into the spotlight, and she quickly became a game changer for trans representation in media. The show - and Jackson's character - inspired audiences so much, she says one woman even bowed down to her in the middle of an airport. "She said that her promotion came because when she was walking in there, she kept thinking, 'Would Elektra walk in here and take "no" for an answer?'" Jackson recalls.

Of course, Jackson's influence doesn't begin and end on television. Jackson has...

‘The Book of Queer’: Alex Newell & EP on Comedy Docuseries’ Historical Importance
Image
For so many queer people, seeing themselves reflected in history books would have been life-affirming and saved them years of pain as children. The Book of Queer is here to deliver that affirmation. The Discovery+ comedic documentary series retells history through the Lgbtqia+ lens it always should have had, showing all who watch that we have always been here, and we’re not going away — loud homophobes be damned. With shows like this, kids nowadays are far from a loss of content teaching them the beauty of Lgbtqia+ history. Each of the five episodes focuses on different historical figures, as told by queer historians, actors, singers, and performers, with Dominique Jackson, Leslie Jordan, Alex Newell, Margaret Cho, and Ross Mathews narrating the installations. Speaking with TV Insider at Discovery+’s Celebrate Pride event during the Tribeca Film Festival on June 9, Newell and Book of Queer executive producer, Pulitzer Prize finalist Dr.
