One hidden comedy movie to stream on every major platform this week
Image
These seven comedy picks didn’t get the hype they deserved — now’s your chance to catch up.

There is a lot of content out there. So much that it’s easy to miss some seriously great movies and shows buried under the weekly avalanche of buzzy new releases. That’s where this list comes in. Each week, I’ll pick one under-the-radar genre gem from each of the major streamers — stuff you might’ve never heard of (and that’s exactly the point). This week’s theme? Comedy movies. Next week, it’ll be something totally different (I’m full of surprises). So let’s get to it — here are my favorite under-the-radar comedy movies to stream on every major platform right now.

7 under-the-radar comedy movies to stream this week (one per platform):

Peacock: ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’

Apple TV+: ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’

For Worse Review: Candid Moments Amid Palm Springs
Image
“For Worse” marks Amy Landecker’s first turn behind the camera in a narrative feature, and she wears multiple hats—as writer, director and lead actor—with deliberate economy. Story kicks off when Lauren, a recently divorced and sober Los Angeles mother, trades her real-estate routine for an experimental commercials acting class. That choice functions as the film’s inciting incident, setting her on a path that threads personal reinvention through ensemble comedy.

Landecker structures the screenplay around two key phases: the claustrophobic intimacy of acting exercises and the sprawling chaos of a Palm Springs wedding. Each sequence builds on the one before, so that the narrative feels like a tight spiral rather than a series of disconnected gags. Lauren’s arc hinges on three narrative questions: Can she reclaim desire after motherhood? Will her midlife vulnerabilities yield genuine connection? And can a woman of her age hold her own among twenty-somethings without sacrificing authenticity?...

‘For Worse’ Review: Amy Landecker Struggles to Make Sparks Fly in Her Directorial Debut
Image
In perhaps the single most charming scene of For Worse, Lauren (Amy Landecker) shares a cigarette with Dave (Bradley Whitford). The characters are near strangers, tossed together by weird and annoying circumstances. But in that moment, their chemistry feels immediate, loose with warmth and crackling with possibility. It just feels right to see them together; this is the kind of connection rom-coms are built around.

Unfortunately, it comes late enough into the 90-minute movie that when it does arrive, you’re left to wonder why the preceding hour-plus hasn’t had more of this spark. For Worse isn’t all bad; bits of it are intriguing and the rest is too anodyne to get worked up about. But it’s hard to shake the disappointment that this is just an okay movie, when it seems like it should’ve been a good one.

Though Landecker has previously established herself as...

‘For Worse’ Review: Amy Landecker’s Thoughtful and Deeply Feminine Debut Celebrates New Beginnings at Any Age
Image
In life, things have to get a lot worse before they can get a little better. In “For Worse,” the versatile and immensely watchable “Transparent” star Amy Landecker’s good-natured narrative feature debut as a writer and director, life gets considerably chaotic for Lauren, a sober and recently divorced West Coast mom trying to give a different direction to her life with her newfound freedom.

It used to be that characters like Lauren — usually defined by that somewhat cringe-inducing and overused “women above a certain age” phrase — were a rarity in cinema. But these days — especially considering several terrific recent releases of all sizes like “Suze,” “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” “The Idea of You” and even “Babygirl” — we don’t seem to be living in that same cinematic world anymore, one that refused to acknowledge the existence, realities and complex sexual desires of women, well, above a certain age.

Sabrina Carpenter Compares Meeting Paul McCartney With ‘Stranger Things’

Sabrina Carpenter stopped by The Late Show to promote her new holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas, and to discuss her six Grammy nominations. During the conversation with host Stephen Colbert, the pop singer recalled hearing the Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon” for the first time as a child and immediately falling head over heels for Paul McCartney.

After downing an espresso martini, Carpenter told Colbert that she has always wanted to be a singer and that writing a song is her favorite thing to do. “Is it true the Beatles inspired you...

‘A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter’: All The Songs You’ll Hear
Image
Sabrina Carpenter does have the same initials as Santa Claus, so it only makes sense that she would have a musical comedy holiday special with guest stars on Netflix. The singer’s 50-minute segment, A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter, streaming as of the evening of Friday, Dec. 6 contained several familiar faces, both musically and in the comedy and acting worlds.

Sadly, there was no sign of Marcello Hernández’s Domingo, but Nico Hiraga played an impressive modern day Ebenezer “Ebby” Scrooge. Carpenter performed musical duets with powerhouse singers Tyla, Shania Twain, Kali Uchis and Chappell Roan while she acted alongside Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Kyle Mooney, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele and Jillian Bell.

She was pitched several “Nonsense” outtros that ranged from bad to “not the worst.” She sang several songs from her holiday EP “Fruitcake” in addition to some Christmas classics like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,...

All of the Songs in Sabrina Carpenter’s Netflix Special, Including Her Duet with Chappell Roan

It’s not your mama’s Christmas special. After a whirlwind year Sabrina Carpenter hosted her first variety special on Netflix.

“You could have been anywhere tonight..But instead you’re here half-watching a big screen while scrolling social media on a smaller screen and for that I’m forever grateful,” she said to her studio audience.

“A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter” leans into the popstar’s old Hollywood glamour look with a touch of her signature raunchy twist.

The Grammy-nominated singer joined forces with talented guest stars, including duets with Tyla, Chappell Roan, Kali Uchis and Shania Twain. A couple of the star’s celebrity friends also stopped by, including Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Nico Hiraga, Kyle Mooney, Owen Thiele, Megan Stalter, Kyle Mooney and Jillian Bell.

The 5 Best Moments From Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Nonsense Christmas’ Special, Including That Chappell Roan Duet
Image
“It’s the ho, ho, ho-iest special of all!”

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Nonsense Christmas” show arrived on Netflix on Friday. Highlighting her 2023 “Fruitcake” EP, the 49-minute show was chock-full of celebrity appearances, sketch comedy and a blend of her festive tunes and Christmas classics with Carpenter’s signature remixed lyrics.

While some of Carpenter’s holiday tracks are as Nsfw as her beloved “Nonsense” outros and “Short n’ Sweet” lyrics, her Netflix special — directed by Sam Wrench — had the challenge of remaining TV-14. As Carpenter sang, “You can watch with your aunties, I might mention panties, but don’t fret, it’s TV-14,” before saying, “which means I’m allowed to say ‘fuck’ three times. Fuck! Just one left.”

“There are comedy specials, and there are musical specials, and there are holiday specials. But who does musical comedy holiday specials? A lot of people,” Carpenter quipped midway through her “It...

‘Sweethearts’ Review: Kiernan Shipka Leads a Reductive, Raunchy Rom-Com That Examines Love and Life’s Complexities
Image
Decades after “When Harry Met Sally” asked audiences if adult men and women can be friends, yet another romantic comedy poses the same question of a contemporary collegiate crowd. However, in director Jordan Weiss’ “Sweethearts,” which revolves around two besties breaking up with their hometown romances over a holiday weekend, the time-honored query waits until the last minutes to develop, while a separate pair of screwball-comedy plotlines haven’t properly concluded. Though the film contains a talented ensemble and compelling sentiments about self-acceptance and platonic friendship, it plays like two half-baked screenplays mashed together, bound by wafer-thin connections.

Ben (Nico Hiraga) and Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) have been best friends since childhood and are determined to stick together through their adulthood, starting with attending the same college in the same dorm at Densen University. Outside of their tightknit bond, however, is a world full of complications, from Ben’s roommate Tyler...

Kiernan Shipka's Thanksgiving-Themed Romantic Comedy Is A Streaming Hit On Max
Image
Holiday movies have been with us for some time, but we now live in an era of the holiday streaming movie. This year, Hulu managed to get Ben Stiller for their Christmas effort "Nutcrackers," while Max recruited Kiernan Shipka, who played Sabrina Spellman in two seasons of Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," for the Thanksgiving-themed rom com "Sweethearts."

Since "Sabrina" was canceled due to the global pandemic, Shipka has appeared in "Back to the Future"-like slasher comedy "Totally Killer," and Roku's TV remake of "Swimming with Sharks." In 2024, she had small parts in the box office record-breaking "Twisters," and Oz Perkins' hit horror effort "Longlegs." But alongside Nico Hiraga, she's the star of "Sweethearts," which comes from co-writer and first time director Jordan Weiss.

The film sees Shipka play Jamie, a college freshman who has been friends with Hiraga's Ben since the eighth grade. The two friends...

Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga in Sweethearts (2024)
This New Max Original Updates ‘When Harry Met Sally’ for the newer generation
Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga in Sweethearts (2024)
Romantic comedies have long been the bread and butter of feel-good cinema, and Sweethearts (2024) boldly steps into the genre with a fresh perspective. Directed by Jordan Weiss and written by Sarah Rothschild, the film draws inspiration from the classic When Harry Met Sally but reinvents its storytelling for contemporary audiences. Anchored by a charismatic cast, including Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga, Sweethearts offers a heartfelt exploration of love, friendship, and growing up in today’s world.

What Is Sweethearts About?

At its core, Sweethearts revolves around two high school seniors, Jane and Will, whose paths intertwine on an unforgettable prom night. Jane, a fiercely independent loner, and Will, a laid-back yet secretly vulnerable teen, come together under unexpected circumstances. Their night unfolds into a chaotic yet heartfelt journey through small-town America, exploring the dynamics of their personalities and the complexities of their lives.

Sweethearts' When Harry Met Sally Reference Explained & How It Sets Up The Biggest Twist
Image
Warning: This article contains Major Spoilers for Sweethearts!Sweethearts replicates When Harry Met Sally's iconic scene but does it with a twist, subverting viewer expectations while still deepening Ben and Jamie's love for each other. The HBO Max original rom-com takes a lot of inspiration from Rob Reiner's classic, presenting two best friends who navigate troubling relationships while being evidently perfect for each other. Sweethearts' early reviews praise its bold subversion of the romantic comedy and its fun dialogue, offering a raunchy but very authentic college experience of love and relationships.

Jordan Weiss' directorial debut smartly plays with long-established genre tropes, offering a reverse love story about characters who want to break up with their significant others during Thanksgiving celebrations. Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga brilliantly lead the Sweethearts cast, showing an old married couple-type dynamic similar to Harry and Sally's charming bickering. Like its predecessor, the movie...

'Sweethearts' Writers on How a Road Trip and 'Superbad' Inspired Kiernan Shipka's Nontraditional Rom-Com

More often than not, coming-of-age films are set in high school, but Sweethearts shows that the college experience can be just a formative. Max's latest original film follows best friends Ben (Nico Hiraga) and Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) as they try to maintain relationships with their high school sweethearts while in college, miles away from home. Soon they come to the conclusion that long-distance dating is preventing them from enjoying life on campus, such as attending frat parties and making new friendships. After an eventful night, Ben and Jamie agree on a break-up pact and hope to put it into action during their Thanksgiving break. As they head back to their hometown, determined to break up with their significant others, things don't run as smoothly as they hoped.

‘Sweethearts’ Director Told Kiernan Shipka and Gen Z Cast to Flag Anything That Was Too ‘Millennial Cringe’
Image
This story includes spoilers about the Max original “Sweethearts.”

First-time director Jordan Weiss and partner Dan Brier wanted to write a coming-of-age comedy based on their own male-female friendship.

The two best friends first met at a young writers group, but “Sweethearts,” their Max original movie, is the first project the two have actually written together.

“It grew out of a road trip that we went on in 2019, where we were just driving across the country,” Brier said. “Because we met fresh out of college, there were a lot of stories and people and worlds that we didn’t know about each other’s past.”

From there, the characters and the world of “Sweethearts” was born. Weiss told TheWrap that Jamie and her lack of female friendships was a lot like herself as a freshman in college, and Brier said that the leads’ relationship mirrors much of his own relationship...

Kiernan Shipka's New Holiday Rom-Com Caps Off A Massive Year Of Movies For The Actress
Image
Sweethearts marks Kiernan Shipka’s fifth 2024 movie release, showing another prolific year for the active actress. Sweethearts’ early reviews praise its leads’ chemistry and the script’s subversive writing and dialogue. Shipka stars alongside Booksmart’s Nico Hiraga in the New Line Cinema college rom-com comedy about two best friends who make a deal to break up with their high school partners on Thanksgiving. Shipka’s Sweethearts character contrasts strikingly with her other 2024 roles, deviating from the actress’ usual horror and dramatic parts, and demonstrating she can offer an easygoing and comedic performance.

Shipka got her start at age 7 and currently has over 53 credits — many of which she took on even before landing her popular role of teen witch Sabrina Spellman in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Her most notable projects include playing Jon Hamm and January Gones’ daughter, Sally Draper, in Mad Men, as well as voicing Jinora in The Legend of Korra.

How Jordan Weiss’ ‘Sweethearts’ Delivers a Twist on the Classic Friends-to-Lovers Trope
Image
Spoiler Warning: This story includes major plot details for the comedy “Sweethearts,” currently streaming on Max.

The trick to Jordan Weiss’ new comedy ‘Sweethearts’ lies in the unexpected. The filmmaker has seen the YouTube comments about the trailer and says audiences are in for a surprise because the end is anything but predictable.

Her directorial debut follows two freshmen childhood friends, Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) and Ben (Nico Hiraga), who decide to break up with their high school partners simultaneously. The chemistry between Shipka and Hiraga’s characters is so undeniable that it begs the question: Is this a friends-to-lovers story?

Speaking with Variety, Weiss says, “I love the debate that movie [‘When Harry Met Sally’] explores: Can men and women be friends? Because I’ve always been a girl with a lot of guy friends. I created ‘Doll Face,’ which was literally about a girl, like, having lost touch with...

“Sweethearts” does not disappoint in delivering college nostalgia and a party playlist to match.

‘Sweethearts’ Review: Generic College Comedy Offers Too Little to Be Thankful For
Image
There are already multiple movies about that first, chaotic weekend when college freshmen return home. And the standards aren’t especially high; the genre includes the Pauly Shore comedy “Son-in-Law” and the Hallmark-ian romance “Turkey Drop.” But “Sweethearts,” a sex comedy lacking in sex, silliness or subversion — just one would do — barely clears the bar.

Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga (“Moxie”) are Jamie and Ben, platonic besties who head off to college together. They’ve committed to long-distance relationships with their high school sweethearts, but soon realize they’d rather be single. So, like millions of students before them, they decide to break up with their partners during Thanksgiving weekend.

After a few listless mishaps, they return home to Ohio where the unsuspecting Claire (Ava DeMary) and Simon (Charlie Hall) await. Jamie is convinced the break has to happen immediately, so they enlist their other Bff, Palmer (Caleb Hearon), to help organize the night.

‘Sweethearts’ Review: Max’s New Thanksgiving Friend-Com Is a Fun If Underwritten ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Response
Image
It’s generally never a good idea, as a romantic comedy, to invoke “When Harry Met Sally” and remind audience members that they could be watching an influential all-time great example of the form instead of one of its many derivatives. But “Sweethearts,” a new Max original, earns its shout-out to the Nora Ephron classic better than most. At the tail end of the Thanksgiving comedy, male lead Ben (Nico Hiraga) sits down with his parents after dinner to watch the 1989 Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan vehicle, only to find the iconic “Men and women can’t be friends” speech hits a bit too close to home.

That’s a question that’s been hanging over his relationship with Bff Jamie (Kiernan Shipka of “Mad Men” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” fame) for a while now. Tight-knit since eighth grade and now attending the same college, the two do practically...

Sweethearts Cast & Character Guide
Image
Warning: This article includes minor spoilers for Sweethearts.

Sweethearts includes a cast led by star Kiernan Shipka but is otherwise comprised of up-and-coming actors who show their potential. The Max original movie puts a twist on the holiday rom-com by centering it on Thanksgiving a holiday thats otherwise been ignored by the genre. Though Sweethearts reviews are mixed, the movie will appeal to fans of the anti-rom-com which follows rom-com tropes and formulas while subverting expectations and challenging the realistic nature of the genre. The films in this sub-genre have messier main characters, show imperfect love, and have different conclusions about popular themes.

Sweethearts hits all the right notes for the anti-rom-com, exploring two best friends as they make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts. Part of the reason the movie thrives is because of the incredible cast that creates likably unlikable characters. The most recognizable name is Kiernan Shipka,...

Sweethearts Review: Kiernan Shipka & Nico Hiraga Carry A Subversive Rom-Com With Fun Writing But Low Energy
Image
Sweethearts is an anti-rom-com that follows two best friends who decide their high school relationships are holding them back as college students. Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) is lethargic and emotionally closed off from befriending others while maintaining a lackluster long-distance relationship with her jock boyfriend. Meanwhile, Ben (Nico Hiraga) is smothered by his vain and obsessive girlfriend, preventing him from committing to his studies. They realize they're in a slump and, no longer emotionally invested in their partners, they make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts before Thanksgiving.

Sweethearts is a comedy directed by Jordan Weiss, centering on two college freshmen who face the challenge of ending their high school relationships during a chaotic Thanksgiving Eve. The film explores themes of friendship and growing up as the characters navigate the pressure of breakups and newfound independence.

Sweethearts Review: Breaking Up and Breaking Through
Image
“Sweethearts” follows Jamie and Ben, two best friends who navigate the turbulent seas of freshman year at Densen College. They are dedicated to maintaining long-distance relationships with high school sweethearts Simon and Claire. Still, they soon find that these connections are more limiting than beneficial. Jamie finds herself faking interest on phone calls. At the same time, Ben struggles to participate in campus life while being constantly digitally monitored by his girlfriend.

After a wild night out with their roommates, the two plan to break up with their significant others on Thanksgiving Eve. This is more than just breaking relationships; it’s about reclaiming their college experience and personal independence. The strategy appears easy but proves to be anything but pushing them into a series of comedic and emotionally difficult situations.

Palmer, Jamie, and Ben’s high school companions, who took a gap year in France, weave his way into their journey.
