Taiwan-based production company Aview Images has joined Indonesian drama “Our Son” as a co-production partner, bringing post-production expertise to the project from award-winning filmmaker Luhki Herwanayogi.
The film, which wrapped principal photography recently in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is eyeing a summer international festival premiere. Led by Kuek Shee Heng and Alice You, Aview Images will handle the film’s sound production, music composition, color grading, and visual effects in Taiwan. This collaboration follows Aview’s recent work on “Tale of The Land” with Indonesia’s KawanKawan Media, which marked the first-ever Indonesia-Taiwan co-production.
The drama, produced by Indonesia-based companies Catchlight Pictures and Qun Films, tells the story of two childless married couples who unexpectedly find themselves raising a son resulting from an illicit affair between their families.
“‘Our Son’ is deeply personal. It arises from my observations of family interactions in Yogyakarta, where I grew up. The film raises a fundamental...

Following the audiovisual extravaganza of “Samsara”, Garin Nugroho opted for a more “tame” approach, coming up with “Whispers in Dabbas”, a film inspired by the true stories of four legal cases in Indonesian courts, which is having its world premiere in Rotterdam.
Whispers in the Dabbas is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
The four stories are as follows. Grandma Minah, a wage labourer, was accused of stealing cocoa beans; Tukirin, a farmer, was charged for using hybrid corn. Daniel Frits Maurits an activist, was accused of breaking the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, essentially for raising awareness against illegal shrimp farming through Facebook; Sorbatua Siallagan, an indigenous elder from the Dolok Parmonangan community in North Sumatra was accused of occupying land within Tpl’s (a pulp and paper company) concession area. Although the actual defendants had different lawyers, Nugroho included Puspa in the story, a novice lawyer that handles...

Asian cinema is under a global spotlight right now. Thanks to the success of movies like Parasite and the rising profile of Asian actors and TV shows, east Asian productions are surging in popularity with mainstream and arthouse audiences alike. While recent hits such as Past Lives and Tainted Love are garnering plenty of attention, and we eagerly wait for Lulu Wang’s Expats to drop, here are four seriously underrated East Asian movies to check out in 2024.
Breathless (2009)
Director: Yang Ik-june
Directed by and featuring Yang Ik-june in a lead role, 2009’s Breathless is a great example of Korean cinema that’s very much a hidden gem. Exploring the unlikely friendship between a hard-nosed debt collector and a student, the movie delivers an unflinching portrayal of the harsh realities of life.
The narrative unfolds as Sang-hoon (Ik-june) and Yeon-hee (Kim Kkobbi), two strangers from different ends of the spectrum dealing with great personal distress,...

Spin-off to “Love for Sale” and “Love for Sale 2”, “Arini by Love. Inc” follows one of the trends of the selections Netflix makes from Indonesia, which seem to focus on impression and the popularity of their cast, rather than actual substance. Let us take things from the beginning though.

The intro shows Arini, the protagonist, getting chased in the night, before the story goes back three years into the past. Then, Arini goes to the office of Love.inc, a dating service(?) that works also as a kind of school, in order to train the people hired (?) on how to eat, speak, dance, and in general conduct themselves in order to succeed in dating. However, the secluded environment also seems to hide a number of secrets, which Arini discovers with the help of Tiara, a woman who initially...
