Tom Hanks' Daughter Fears When Her Dad Dies She Will Feel Different About Disneyland
Image
The fear of losing a parent heightens as you get older. Memories become more vivid, and the destinations you visit as a child become personal landmarks. For Tom Hanks's daughter, E.A. Hanks, Disneyland is that landmark, and in her new memoir, "The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road," she opens up about how his death could change what was once her happy place. The California theme park serves as a second home for E.A., who stated that she visited during monumental moments in her childhood, from birthdays to Thanksgiving. It's also where she and her dad developed a deeper bond.

According to E! News, the 42-year-old wrote, "Disneyland has been more constant in my life than any house I have ever lived in. I have spent Thanksgiving there. I have spent Christmas there. I have spent more birthdays than I could count there." What...

E.A. Hanks, Daughter of Tom Hanks, Reveals ‘Abusive,’ Traumatic Childhood
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Tom Hanks has been described as “America’s dad,” due to his warm, paternal onscreen persona.

And the screen legend’s private and public lives are in alignment there, as he enjoys close relationships with all four of his adult children.

But that doesn’t mean that all of the Hanks kids enjoyed happy, healthy upbringings.

In fact, Tom’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth — who goes by E.A. Hanks professionally — is soon to release a memoir detailing her chaotic and damaging childhood.

Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
E.A. Hanks, the daughter of Hollywood icon Tom Hanks and his late first wife, Samantha Lewes, is breaking her silence on the profound and lasting scars of her “abusive” childhood. In her upcoming memoir, “The 10,” the 42-year-old writer bravely details the abuse she endured, revealing how its effects continue to shape her life today.

Tom Hanks’ Daughter E.A. Hanks Unveils Harrowing Details of Abusive Childhood in Explosive New Memoir

In raw and honest prose, E.A. recounts the pervasive instability of her mother’s home, where basic necessities and consistent care were often absent. She reveals a startling struggle with “personal hygiene,” explaining that “only sporadically did I ever have an adult telling me to brush my teeth, for example, let alone how or why I should.” This lack of fundamental guidance led to a shocking realization in her 30s that she hadn’t seen a dentist in over a decade.

Micaela Wittman Reteams With Director Arthur De Larroche On Dramedy ‘We’re Already There’; Truman Hanks, Jon Bass & Elsie Hewitt Among Others Set
Image
Exclusive: Micaela Wittman and Arthur De Larroche, the indie filmmaking duo behind Remy & Arletta and Clairevoyant, are reteaming on We’re Already There, a dramedy currently in production in New York City.

De Larroche is directing from his script written with Wittman, who leads the cast. Others appearing include Truman Hanks (A Man Called Otto), Jon Bass (Miracle Workers), Elsie Hewitt (Industry), Kevin William Paul (Broadway’s The Outsiders), Jonah Feingold (At Midnight), Jessica Baglow (Gentleman Jack), electronic musician Marc Rebillet (80 for Brady), Francesca Keller (Anyone Else But Me), and Morgane Bensadoun (Blue Bloods).

A dialogue-driven film in the spirit of My Dinner with Andre, We’re Already There follows a disillusioned young artist (Wittman) as she navigates a single day in New York City, grappling with career setbacks, personal revelations, and industry politics, while juggling self-doubt and ambition in the cutthroat world of entertainment.

Joaquin Acrich and Lily Drew (Mike Birbiglia’s The Old Man & the Pool) are producing alongside Manic, the production company from Wittman & Larroche launched last summer.

The Manic duo comes to the project after collaborating on Remy & Arletta and Clairevoyant, which saw Wittman star with De Larroche directing. An adaptation of the same-name bestseller, which premiered at Outfest, the former is a coming-of-age drama that follows Wittman’s Remy as she attempts to balance her relationship with her alcoholic mother and her longtime best friend, Arletta. The film came on the heels of the duo’s 2021 mockumentary Clairevoyant, which follows a spoiled 21-year-old aspiring guru as she attempts to find the meaning of life while filming her journey with a makeshift camera crew.

As an actress, Wittman was recently announced to be starring opposite Julia Fox and Ashley Moore in the sapphic romance, Perfect. She has also been seen in Netflix’s Shirley Chisholm biopic Shirley, as well as such series as The Dropout, Sharp Objects, Atypical, Teen Wolf, and Modern Family.

De Larroche has also appeared as an actor in both Remy & Arletta and Clairevoyant, among other projects. Prior to Clairevoyant, he helmed the indie features American Bistro and If God Wants.

Focused on young adult, female-led and genre agnostic films, Manic’s initial development slate also included the action horror pic Rager, high-concept YA romance I Suck, and female buddy comedy Night on the Town, as we were first to report.

De Larroche is repped by Stewart Talent; Hanks by CAA; Bass by Gersh, Rise Management, and Ziffren Brittenham; Hewitt by Buchwald, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Myman Greenspan Fox; Paul by Artists & Representatives and Lasher Group; Feingold by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole; Baglow by Asteria Artists; Rebillet by UTA and Crush Works; Keller by Rebel Creative Group; and Bensadoun by Carol Shaginaw Talent Agency and Brave Artists Management.

Tom Hanks turns 67-years-old today, and was saluted by his actor/singer wife Rita Wilson via Instagram.

Tom Hanks Admits He Hates Some of the Movies He's Been In
Image
Tom Hanks doesn't like all of his movies; in fact, he admittedly hates some of them. In a discussion with The New Yorker, published on May 28, the Oscar winner got honest about filmmaking and how sometimes movies that have the potential to turn out good end up being total flops.

"Ok, let's admit this: We all have seen movies that we hate," Hanks said. "I have been in some movies that I hate. You have seen some of my movies and you hate them." He then laid out five "points of the Rubicon" that all moviemakers pass through when creating and releasing a project that indicate how it'll be received.

"The first Rubicon you cross is saying yes to the film," he explained. "Your fate is sealed. You are going to be in that movie. The second Rubicon is when you actually see the movie that you made. It either...

Who Plays Young Tom Hanks In A Man Called Otto
Image
Tom Hanks plays against type in A Man Called Otto, and as the movie delves into the grumpy character's backstory, audiences encounter a younger version of Otto. Casting a convincing younger version of a face as recognizable as Hanks' is no easy feat, but director Marc Forster made the ideal choice to effectively pull it off.

The movie relies on multiple flashbacks to explain the tragedy that has made Hanks' Otto Anderson such a cynical grouch to the new family that moves in next door to him. In order to ensure that the flashbacks in A Man Called Otto maintain the proper gravitas needed to effectively tell the story, it was important that the younger version of Hanks not be distracting. Forster came up with a unique idea to make it work, which was fully embraced by the prolific cinematic legend.

‘A Man Called Otto’ (2022) Movie Review: Tom Hanks As Tom Hanks
Image
A Man Called Otto is a movie directed by Marc Forster starring Tom Hanks.

A remake whose only appeal lies in seeing Tom Hanks handle the role of a grouch… to reconvert the character to his own kind, sensitive and simple style.

One of its charms: we get to see Tom Hanks’ son, Truman Hanks, play Otto as a young man.

Storyline

Otto is one of those neighbors no one wants to have: grumpy, picky, gossipy and bitter. A new family moves into a nearby house, which will cause Otto’s life, about to end, to change forever.

Movie Review

A Man Called Otto is one of those easy, simplistic, crowd-pleasing movies that give “good vibes” everywhere and that, in essence and without satisfying almost anyone, leave a feeling that the world can still be a nice place full of nice people with a charming neighborhood.

A feelgood movie, they will say,...

‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: A Cranky Hanks Heads a Blah Humbug of a Movie
Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
Tom Hanks has worked his high-wattage, regular-guy-hero amiability for so long that he was bound to experiment with a year like 2022 eventually. In the summer, he gave us an oily, flesh-packed Colonel Tom Parker with that strange barbed-wire accent in “Elvis,” then he took on Geppetto in the year’s other, forgettable “Pinocchio,” and now he’s been fitted for grumpypants, frown lines, and a self-made noose as a suicidal sourpuss in “A Man Called Otto.”

But we know Hanks by now, and what kind of curmudgeon he’d want to play, which means you don’t have to be familiar with the source material of “Otto” to guess within the first few minutes — when he’s being obnoxious to a perfectly kind hardware store cashier, but in that isn’t-it-cute-how-mean-he-is way — that this is one of those movies typically described in terms of “surrendering” to “charms,” and “winning you over.

Will Tom Hanks Ever Retire? ‘I’m Not Working for the Sake of Working’
Image
Is Tom Hanks ever going to retire?

At 66, the actor has appeared in almost 80 feature films during his four-decade tenure in Hollywood. At the New York premiere of his newest film, “A Man Called Otto,” Hanks cast doubt on the prospect of retirement.

“No, I don’t have any desire [to retire],” Hanks told Variety on Monday night. “I’m not working for the sake of working. I’m in a very lucky position. It’s got to be fabulous. Rita and I talk about it all the time, which is there’s only two reasons go to work: It’ll be good or it’ll be fun. And if it’s neither one of those, I’ll stay home until the cows come on. I don’t need to do anything.”

The circumstances were much different for Otto, the character Hanks plays in the reboot of the Swedish film “A Man Called Ove.

Hanks is married to actor Rita Wilson, and they have two children: Rapper and actor Chet Hanks and Truman Hanks, who pops up in Tom’s new movie “A Man Called Otto.” Hanks’ son from a previous marriage is Colin Hanks, whose most recent acting roles included “The Offer” and “A Friend of the Family.”

“Look, this is a family business,” Hanks said in the interview. “This is what we’ve been doing forever. It’s what all of our kids grew up in. If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year.”

“The thing that doesn’t change no matter what happens,...

Tom Hanks dismisses ‘nepo baby’ debate
Image
Tom Hanks, America’s Dad, gave an interview this week while promoting his new film “A Man Called Otto.” During the conversation, he waved away recent discussion about nepotism in Hollywood, which came to an apex with a large New York magazine feature. Hanks, an A-lister who broke into the industry on nothing but his talents, the status quo.

“Otto” features his son Truman Hanks, and his wife, Rita Wilson, wrote a song for its soundtrack and is a co-producer. “Look this is a family business. This is what we’ve been doing forever. It’s what all of our kids grew up in,” he said rather matter-of-factly. “If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year.”

A Man Called Otto Review: Tom Hanks Is A Grouch In Flawed Crowd-Pleaser
Image
A Man Called Otto is a warm, if overly saccharine movie that is uplifted by the ensemble cast led by Tom Hanks. The film — an American take on the 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove, which is itself an adaptation of the 2012 novel Fredrik Backman — is a slow burn, and Hanks’ curmudgeonly character can grate on occasion, but the story’s heart is in the right place. Even when things can get unnecessarily overwrought and inane, David Magee’s script reigns it back in. A Man Called Otto aims to be a crowd-pleasing, heartwarming film, and, despite its many flaws and speed bumps, is a success on that front.

Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks) is a grumpy old man. He hates conversing with people, throws a fit when anything is out of place in his small suburban neighborhood, and has a generally unpleasant demeanor that puts off his neighbors. It’s...

Film Review: ‘A Man Called Otto’ is O-t-t-Oh No for Tom Hanks
Image
Chicago – Tom Hanks finds himself – as the title character – stranded in a slough of artificiality in this clumsy manipulative attempt at a crowd pleaser. He plays a grump in “A Man Named Otto,” a remake of a 2015 Swedish film. The setting has been transferred to the grey rust belt of Pittsburgh, and Hanks is a widower with a lot of chips on his shoulder about the world today.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Otto sees himself surrounded by idiots. He also has both the obstinance and time to complain, whether its cars driving around his housing complex’s gate, or being charged for six feet of an item when he only wanted five feet. His patience is further tested by the changing nature of his neighborhood and a Hispanic family that moves in across the street. The husband Tommy (Manual Garcia-Rulfo) is a clumsy nitwit and the wife Marisol (Mariana Treviño) is a talkative-but-kind...

‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Tom Hanks, Mariana Trevino & A Cat Make This American Remake Irresistible
Image
When you have an international best seller that was on the Nyt list for 42 weeks and then made into a multi-Oscar-nominated Swedish film that became the third-most successful in the history of that country Ingmar Bergman called home, you might wonder what the need was for an English-language American remake. The answer is a chance to give Tom Hanks a role he can run with and, more important, to bring a very human, often funny, character-driven story back to light in a time that needs it more than ever.

‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Tom Hanks Is a Grumpy Old Man in This Limp Remake
Image
Despite recent reports to the contrary, Tom Hanks will always be known as the nicest guy in Hollywood. But is Tom Hanks such a “nice guy” that he can only play against type in the most obvious, literal way? A murderous villain is too far a stretch; a double-crossing commander is perhaps not juicy enough. No, when Tom Hanks wants to really throw a sour wrench onto his all-American good-guy bread and butter, he has to play a grumpy old man. Not just any grumpy old man: an embittered, persnickety, widower with a secret heart of gold. The question isn’t whether he pulls it off well enough, but if he should have tried in the first place.

Adding to the pile of ham-fisted and unnecessary American remakes of successful international films, “A Man Called Otto” . A remake of the 2016 Swedish comedy “A Man Called Ove,” based on Swedish writer Fredrik Backman’s 2012 bestseller,...

‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Tom Hanks Plays a Florid Grump
Tom Hanks in A Man Called Otto (2022)
In “A Man Called Otto,” Tom Hanks plays one of those misanthropic over-the-hill loners who never misses a chance to vent his spleen. Giving a hard time to everyone is what gets him through the day; you might call it his hobby. From Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol” to Alan Arkin in “Little Miss Sunshine,” we’ve seen this sort of get-off-my-lawn curmudgeon many times before. But with the right actor and the right script, it’s a formula for yocks (and for gently rediscovered humanity) that audiences never get tired of — and Hanks, make no mistake, is the right actor for this role. For years, when he was America’s top movie star, Hanks was routinely described as our own James Stewart, the soul of guy-next-door decency, but going back to his earliest performances in films like “Bachelor Party” Hanks has always had an edge to him. That’s...

‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Tom Hanks in a Predictable but Touching Portrait of Grief and Resilience
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The poster for A Man Called Otto invites us to “fall in love with the grumpiest man in America.” But really, was there any doubt, considering that he’s played by Tom Hanks? The inevitable transformation of the title character from ill-tempered sourpuss to lovable softy wouldn’t generate much suspense anyway, since the film is a remake of the hit 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove, adapted from the best-selling novel by Fredrik Backman. Add to that the fact that you have the modern-day inheritor of Jimmy Stewart’s mantle playing the lead, and you can pretty much predict the film’s every beat.

But that doesn’t it make any less enjoyable or moving, thanks to its reliably effective redemption arc, narrative structure and Hanks’ enduring appeal. Unlike the Swedish film’s lead actor, Rolf Lassgard, who was genuinely intimidating in his curmudgeonliness,...

Best Times Hollywood Kids Played Their Parents' Characters On-Screen
Image
One of the holiday season's most anticipated releases is the Tom Hanks comedy-drama A Man Called Otto, based on the bestselling novel "A Man Called Ove" by Swedish author Fredrik Backman. In the film, Hanks' son Truman Hanks makes his second big screen appearance, this time playing the younger version of Hanks' character Otto Anderson. Call it nepotism, call it brilliant casting, call it a bit of both, but there's a long tradition of Hollywood kids being cast as earlier personas of their celebrity parents. Here are some of the most memorable performances by celebrity children playing younger versions of their moms and dads:...

Nordic Giant Sf Studios Boss Michael Porseryd Discusses ’A Man Called Otto,’ Company’s Production Strategy
Image
Sf Studios, the 104-year old Nordic giant, has crashed into the awards season with Tom Hanks’ “A Man Called Otto,” which it produced with Playtone and fully financed.

Buzzed about as a potentially strong Oscar candidate since its first official screening in L.A. last week, the Sony Pictures film is a remake of “A Man Called Ove,” the Swedish hit also produced by Sf Studios. The 2015 film, adapted from Fredrik Backman’s global bestseller, earned two Oscar nominations.

Sf Studios’ CEO and president Michael Porseryd told Variety that the 50-million film with Hanks underscores the banner’s commitment to theatrical movies and its drive to own intellectual property rights for content it finances.

“The biggest difficulty we’re facing right now is to get audiences back into theaters, but when a movie works in cinemas, the payback is much bigger than when dealing with a streamer,” said Porseryd, who...

Tom Hanks Talks Working With A Cat & His Son Truman In ‘A Man Called Otto’ – Contenders LA3C
Image
Following in the footsteps of a massively successful novel, and then the Oscar-nominated 2015 Swedish blockbuster A Man Called Ove, Tom Hanks stars in the English-language remake, A Man Called Otto. It was reinvented to take place in Pittsburgh but still features a central character who is about cranky as they come — a lonely widower who basically wants to end it all but who, with the help of a group of memorable neighbors and one colorful cat named Schmagel, finds hope and heart and a reason for living.

Hanks of course plays that title character, and it not only is a role perfectly suited to the two-time Oscar winner’s vast talents, it also gives him a chance to try some comedy again on the big screen, something he hasn’t done in quite a while. Hanks and director Marc Forster joined...
