Chernobyl (2019)
The U.K.’s Broadcasting Press Guild held its 46th Television and Radio Awards at London’s Banking Hall on Friday, with “Chernobyl” and “The Virtues” among the winners.

The Bpg Awards, given for work commissioned or premiered in the U.K. and screened in 2019, are selected independently by TV and radio correspondents, critics and previewers.

“I’m proud to say that, for the second year in a row, a record number of votes were cast for the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, which is testament to the enduring qualities of the Bpg and the continued vibrancy of British television,” said Bpg chair Jake Kanter.

“Chernobyl” (Sky Atlantic) was named best drama series, while “The Virtues” (Channel 4) won the award for best single drama or miniseries.

Film and TV director Michael Apted was awarded the Bpg Jury Prize for the “Up” series, which began in 1964 with a profile of 14 seven-year-old...

‘Maudie’ Director Aisling Walsh Reveals How She Tempted Oscar-Winner Glenda Jackson Back To Screen In BBC Drama ‘Elizabeth Is Missing’
Glenda Jackson in Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971)
Oscar-winner Glenda Jackson, who picked up Academy Awards for 1971’s Women In Love and 1974’s A Touch Of Class, returns to the screen for the first time in 25 years in BBC drama Elizabeth Is Missing.

The actor, who swapped film and TV for politics in 1992 when she became a Labour MP, was persuaded back to screen by Aisling Walsh after the Maudie director signed up to helm the 90-minute drama adaptation of Emma Healey’s dementia mystery.

Walsh told Deadline, “I thought of Glenda immediately when I read the script and knew she was no longer an MP and had seen her in King Lear and wondered if this was something she might fancy doing. We got in touch, I went to New York to meet her and we had a chance to talk about it. If you’re lucky you get the actor you first thought of.”

But then, the music starts playing, the lights go up, and they are surprised to hear the first notes of a song that means a lot to them.

Separately, ITV Studios Germany has also optioned the format, which has been snapped up in ten countries including Finland.

Stv produces series including ITV entertainment format Safeword, which has been remade for VH1 in the U.S.

‘Safeword’ Producer Stv Productions Signs With Wme As It Eyes U.S. Expansion
Exclusive: Safeword and Sex Tape producer Stv Productions is gearing up for an aggressive push into the U.S. and has signed with Wme for representation.

This comes after the company, which is the production arm of the eponymous Scottish broadcaster, hired former Tinopolis and NBC Universal executive David Mortimer as its content chief.

Stv Productions will work with the Hollywood talent agency across genres as it looks to develop dramas and entertainment formats for UK, U.S. and international markets. It was previously repped by CAA but Mortimer has previously worked with Wme during his time at A Smith & Co. and Magical Elves owner Tinopolis, where they were instrumental in helping sell Paradise Hotel to Fox, and via his own Sony-backed indie Fever Media.

MD Mortimer joined Stv at the end of last year and has been tasked with growing the scale of the production business, developing...
