Film Review: Grave Torture (2024) by Joko Anwar
Image
As we have mentioned before, one of the most appealing ‘innovations’ the horror genre has seen during the last decades is its connection with intense sociopolitical commentary. Joko Anwar, in a film that was inspired by his own homonymous short of 2012 (an omnibus where Noboru Iguchi and Erik Matti are also mentioned as directors), achieves just that, to the highest degree. Let us take things from the beginning though.

Sita and Adil are two adolescent siblings who live and work with their parents, who operate a family bakery. Although they face intense competition from the Western franchises that have landed in Indonesia, the family continues to make a living and are in general quite happy. One day though, both of the parents are killed in a suicide bombing, with the assailant being driven to his deed by the concept of grave torture,...

‘Grave Torture’ Cast And Character Guide
Image
Grave Torture is a brand-new Indonesian Netflix Original that is a psychological horror film that explores the themes of death, sin, the afterlife, radicalism, mental health, and abuse. All of these aspects are found in the stories of the characters of the film, which is extensively covered by the writer and director Joko Anwar.

Sita

Faradina Mufti and Widuri Puteri, both actors, portray the roles of older and younger Sita, respectively, in Grave Torture. Sita was the one who was most deeply affected by the death of her parents, as she witnessed them being killed by a suicide bomber. The young girl is disturbed to learn of grave torture, the reason behind the suicide bomber’s radicalization. Sita never processed the pain of losing her parents, and quickly jumped into debunking grave torture theories. As she refuses to get radicalized in the Islamic boarding school, she finds a way out...

Surprise! Netflix Just Released Joko Anwar’s New Horror Movie ‘Grave Torture’ [Trailer]

Joko Anwar’s ‘Nightmares And Daydreams’ Review: Netflix Anthology Series Uses Horror To Critique The Economy
Image
Netflix’s popularity can be attributed to many different movies and shows, but, in my opinion, their horror anthology series Black Mirror was integral to their overnight success because I can remember obsessing over its brutal satire like it was yesterday. Then, the streaming platform’s Indian branch made Lust Stories, and the idea of provocative storytelling featuring Bollywood stars felt promising. Love, Death, and Robots became everyone’s favorite almost instantly, with its vivid style and precise storytelling. And then things sort of went downhill with absolutely trashy products like Ghost Stories, Ludo, Paava Kadhaigal, Pitta Kathalu, Ankahi Kahaniya, Ajeeb Dastans, Feels Like Ishq, Ray, and Lust Stories 2. The only diamond in the rough was Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. And it seems like Netflix has learned the right lesson from it and has brought another anthology series inspired by the works of an acclaimed director: Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams.

‘Impetigore’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Tara Basro, Marissa Anita, Ario Bayu, Christine Hakim, Asmara Abigail, Kiki Narendra, Zidni Hakim, Faradina Mufti, Abdurrahman Arif, Muhammad Abe Baasyin, Mursiyanto, Ahmad Ramadhan | Written and Directed by Joko Anwar

On researching Impetigore I quickly stumbled on why the movie has that slightly strange-sounding punned title: Impetigo (im-puh-tie-go) is a common and highly contagious skin infection that mainly affects infants and children.

So the story is as follows. Maya and her friend Dini discover that Maya might infact inherit a large house out if the city. Struggling with life as it is, they travel together to the Village she was born in, unaware of the curse that has plagued it for years – babies being born without skin

The opening scene to Impetigore is excellent. Perhaps too excellent as it got my hopes up to a point that it never really lived up to that opening exchange. We see...
