Demi Moore Nominated for Best Actress at 2025 Oscars for 'The Substance'
Image
The time has finally come for Demi Moore, thanks to a body horror movie satire that became an unexpected awards-season favorite. The Substance proves that horror can still break through with voters known for leaning towards more prestigious fare, racking up a total of five 2025 Oscar nominations, including Moore, who earned her first-ever Oscar nod for Best Actress.

The actress, whose career spans 45 years, numerous beloved films, and several box office hits, was one of five names nominated for Best Actress this morning. The Ghost star is competing against Mikey Madison for Anora, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez, and Fernanda Torres for I'm Still Here. While this could still very much be a wide-open race, many believe that the win comes down to Moore (who is riding the wave of a big comeback) and Madison (the young actress who is having a true A Star Is Born moment).

'They Couldn't Shoot My Face Anymore': The Substance Star Admits the Prosthetics Used Damaged Her Skin
Image
The Substance has received critical acclaim after its premiere. The body horror has received several nominations at big awards, and it's expected to gain some potential Academy Awards nominations. Still, the film was physically draining for one of its lead stars.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Margaret Qualley, who plays the younger version of Demi Moore's character, revealed the prosthetics she wore during filming heavily damaged her skin. The actress received several award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for the role, including Critics' Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. However, her involvement came with some big sacrifices.

Demi Moore's Acclaimed 'The Subsctance' is Returning to Theaters for Oscar Season Push
Image
With the Academy Awards in March approaching, a certain modern body horror hit starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley is getting another theatrical release. The Golden Globes have already recognized Moore's stellar performance with a well-deserved win for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, but will the Oscars give The Substance the same chance for recognition?

The film, about an aging actress trying new treatment to get her career back, is returning to theaters on Friday, Jan, 17, to hopefully gain a better chance of being accepted as a nomination for the 2025 Oscars.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat, it explores themes of age and value in a strikingly visual way, and studio Mubi is taking the proactive step to ensure the unconventional film gets a fighting chance at this year's Academy Awards. The Substance will be re-released in more than 350 theaters in the U.S. this week, providing audiences that didn't...

'The Substance' Fans Need to Watch This Japanese Horror Film
Image
Quick Links 'Helter Skelter' Tackles Obsessions with Beauty 'Helter Skelter' Is an Underappreciated Masterpiece Why Fans of 'The Substance' Need to Watch 'Helter Skelter'

The mere mention of Japanese body horror will likely have fans of Tetsuo: The Iron Man's ears perking up. Yet, Japan has been known to thrive in the genre, from movie series like Tomie to modern cult classics like Meatball Machine. One that shines above them all and, dare we say, is even comparable to Shinya Tsukamoto's quintessential film is Mika Ninagawa's Helter Skelter.

While mainly flying under the radar, with distribution and lack of availability on the major streaming platforms, Helter Skelter is a masterpiece worth tracking down or subscribing to one of the smaller platforms that host the feature film. The timing to watch the movie has never been better, as with the fanfare around The Substance,...

Quick Links The Oscars Case Against 'The Substance' The Oscars Case for 'The Substance'

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of the Oscars… or at least one more open-minded to horror? That might actually be the case this year if the Golden Globes are any indication. Coralie Fargeat’s instant body-horror classic, The Substance, has already proved to be one of the biggest sleeper hits of fall 2024, and its buzz only seems to have grown since then. Yet this week may have seen its hype hit new heights, as Demi Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical, unexpectedly beating out Mikey Madison for Anora.

Clearly, the film has resonated with many in the industry, thanks in part to Fargeat’s vicious takedown of Hollywood’s ageist and sexist business practices. Everyone also loves a good comeback narrative, and it’s nothing...

'The Substance' Stars Don't "Respect the Balance" During Surprise Golden Globes Sketch
Image
The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat, tears into the sexist expectations of the entertainment industry, specifically Hollywood, while delivering a terrifyingly nasty body-horror experience. It surprised absolutely no one, then, when its two stars, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, paid homage to the movie while presenting an award at last night's Golden Globes. The Golden Globes are a glitzy, booze, and food-filled night celebrating the best of last year's film and TV offerings. While The Substance was nominated in several categories, the pair couldn't help but make the most of the opportunity to reprise their roles from the film while presenting the Best Television Male Actor award.

When Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley took to the stage to present the award, Moore immediately turned to her co-star and asked, "What are you doing here?" Moore plays failing actress Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance. To rejuvenate her career, she takes a...

Demi Moore Wins Best Actress for 'The Substance' at Golden Globes 2025
Image
The 2025 Golden Globes were a landmark moment for underappreciated actors finally getting the recognition they deserve. FX's Shogun won several major awards, while Colin Farrell took home Best Actor in a Limited Series - Drama for his performance in The Penguin. But the true hero of the night was Demi Moore, who won her first major acting award in 30 years for her incredible performance in The Substance.

Demi Moore won Best Female Actor - Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy (which really rolls off the tongue) for her performance in Mubi's sensational horror movie The Substance. While the film will likely cause some debate about its categorization as a musical/comedy, Moore's award was well-deserved. "I'm just in shock right now," the actress said in her acceptance speech. During the speech, Moore reflected on her long acting career, and the lack of Oscar statuettes and Golden Globes that came from it.

'The Substance' Director Shuts Down the Possibility of a Sequel
Image
Coralie Fargeat, the director of The Substance, commented on the possibility of making a sequel to the 2024 massive horror hit and insisted that there will be "no sequels, no prequels." The Substance is a horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley that blew everyone's mind in 2024 and even garnered some Award-season buzz. Critically acclaimed and very successful among fans of the bizarre, The Substance is a complete shift in tone that we didn't know we needed.

Unfortunately, for those who expected to see more emotionally disturbed characters making an extraordinary decision to put their bodies through the effects of the substance, we have bad news. During an interview with Variety, director Coralie Fargeat was asked about the possibility of a sequel, and she replied as follows:

"Oh no, oh no. The point of this movie is to present fresh things to the world. Like no sequels, no prequels, no number two,...

10 Best Body Horror Movies of All Time, Ranked

Body horror is an interesting subgenre. It tends to butt up against other subgenres like sci-fi horror, werewolf movies, or creature features. However, it's distinct because it is often grotesque and brutal, with scenes depicting harm to the body that make the skin crawl.

Movies that offer the purest form of body horror make the list of the best of all time. These films push human anatomy to its limits, bringing the horror from the inside out where it can't be escaped. Sometimes these movies are hard to watch, and no matter what, they're beyond terrifying.

Demi Moore's Best (And Oscar-Worthy) Performance Came in The Substance

There is a signature moment in Coralie Fargeat's satirical body horror film, The Substance, where star Demi Moore is presented at her most vulnerable. Playing an aging actress who is being put out to pasture by the higher-ups of her aerobics TV show, she is preparing to go out on a date after having already used the black market drug that literally makes a younger version of herself come out of her body. At this point, Elisabeth Sparkle has reverted to her original self. As she prepares to get ready, looking beautiful by anyone's standards, she heads to the door to leave but immediately second-guesses herself and heads back to the bathroom to apply more makeup and add more to her outfit.

Why Sue Doesn't Look Like Elisabeth in The Substance
Image
French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat's newest film, The Substance, has been the topic of numerous discussions online for being the most shocking (and disgusting) movie of the year. While it is both surprising and at times gross, the main reason it has gained so much traction is because of the not-so-subtle commentary on society's unsustainable beauty standards, specifically toward women. The film takes jabs at Hollywood's obsession with youth and beauty concerning women, but it also talks about society's unhealthy relationship with women's youth and beauty.

The body horror film follows a faded Oscar-winning actress named Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who is fired from her decades-long stint leading an exercise show on the morning of her 50th birthday. After getting into a terrible car accident while watching her billboard be taken down, the downtrodden former starlet decides to try something called The Substance, which supposedly creates a better version of the user.

How Gory Is the Substance?
Image
Warning: Spoilers follow for The SubstanceJust over a week into its release, its already clear that The Substance is destined to go down as one of 2024s most talked about films. And the hype is completely justified. Director Coralie Fargeat has made an utter powder keg of a movie, ruthlessly satirizing female objectification and ageism in the entertainment industry while expertly blending body horror with high camp. On top of that, it features career-best performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, both of whom deserve Oscar consideration (despite the Academys notorious stigma against horror).

That being said, The Substance is absolutely not for the faint of heart. Its also not advised to eat before or while watching, as the film is one of the grisliest in recent memory, featuring some of the most viscerally sickening body horror since David Cronenbergs The Fly. The last 15 minutes in particular arguably push the R-rating to its limit,...

Breaking Down The Substance & Its Beautifully Bloody Ending
Image
The Substance is the newest body horror to hit theaters, and it is a brilliantly scathing review of Hollywood beauty standards. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance fits within her typical style of creating worlds that are recognizable, yet detached from reality. The film, which was the result of a joint venture between production companies in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, originally premiered in May this year, before gaining theatrical release on September 20th.

Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, The Substance follows a fading celebrity who uses a black-market drug in hopes of creating a younger, more beautiful version of herself. Giving into the pressures of aging, and being pushed out of the television industry, The Substance acts as a commentary on the monstrous side of giving in to societal standards. The ending of The Substance is bonkers, bloody, and beautiful, but what does it mean?...
