"Saw X Was A Love Letter": What Made Latest Franchise Sequel Work Explained By Previous Movie's Director
Image
Saw X is the latest installment in the Saw franchise, serving as a prequel to Saw II, and features returning cast members and new additions to the cast. The success of Saw X is attributed to the producers giving fans what they wanted, with familiar characters like Billy the Puppet and John Kramer playing prominent roles in the film. The film's nostalgic elements, focus on Kramer, and post-credits scene hint at a continuation of the franchise, with a confirmed eleventh film set to arrive in theaters in 2024.

Released in theaters on September 29, 2023, Saw X is the latest movie in the horror franchise and serves as a prequel to Saw II. Tobin Bell reprises his role as John Kramer with Shawnee Smith and Costas Mandylor also making their grand returns as Amanda Young and Detective Hoffman. In addition to bringing back familiar faces, Saw X introduced new cast members such as Synnøve Macody Lund,...

Saw X director wanted the film to feel like the final send-off for the Jigsaw character
Image
Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise, is currently in theatres (you can read our review Here) – and so far the movie has pulled in almost $60 million at the global box office, so we’re probably going to be seeing a Saw 11 sooner than later. In fact, the producers were already talking sequel before the movie was released. But during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter (and also edited the first five films, plus Jigsaw) said he intended for the movie to feel like the final send-off to the Jigsaw character.

When asked about what could be coming next for the franchise, Greutert said, “Well, we’ll just have to see what the future of Saw is. There are so many directions we could go, but for me, there’s no obvious one coming out of this film.

Saw X Cinematographer Talks Recreating Original Feel & Bringing Back Iconic Franchise Visuals
Image
Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for Saw X!

Cinematographer Nick Matthews was hired to work on Saw X due to his previous work in gritty films and music videos, not necessarily horror. Matthews was a fan of the Saw franchise growing up and felt a deep connection to the movies and their impact on culture and cinema. Matthews praised director Kevin Greutert's methodical and collaborative approach, and their goal was to bring back the original feel and visuals of the early Saw movies while still adding their own unique touch.

The Jigsaw franchise is back and better than ever with Saw X. The latest horror sequel sees Tobin Bell returns as John Kramer just weeks after the original movie as he is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer with only months to live. After being conned by a group of scammers into believing he was cured with an experimental medical procedure,...

‘Saw X’ Film Review: Best Film Of An Otherwise Messy Horror Franchise
Image
Kevin Greutert‘s Saw X takes place between the first two films of the Saw franchise and focuses on its protagonist, John Kramer/The Jigsaw Killer (Tobin Bell).

Kramer goes to a clinic outside of Mexico City and undergoes a procedure that he hopes will cure him of his brain cancer.

After he completes the operation, Kramer finds out that it was a scam that had many other victims who were also conned into having this procedure done on them.

In response, Kramer kidnaps the five people who deceived him: Dr. Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund), the daughter of the doctor who conducted the procedure, Finn Pederson (Donagh Gordon), Gabriela (Renata Vaca), Diego (Joshua Okamoto), Mateo (Octavio Hinojosa) and Valentina (Paulette Hernández).

Much like the previous films, Kramer forces his captors to survive death traps.

Cecilia, early on, reassured Kramer that the procedure would work, saying that his time was not up yet.

Saw Composer Charlie Clouser Sets New Record, Surpassing Star Wars' John Williams
Image
Composer Charlie Clouser has achieved a milestone by scoring ten movies within the Saw franchise, surpassing the legendary composer John Williams. Clouser humbly admits that he doesn't compare himself to Williams in any other aspect, but kept track of the number of sequels to see if he could catch up. Clouser's music has become a significant part of the Saw franchise, being compared to Tobin Bell's character, and is considered indispensable to the films.

Charlie Clouser, the composer known for his work on the Saw franchise, has achieved a milestone with the release of Saw X. He now holds the distinction of being the first American composer to score ten movies within the same franchise. This has propelled him past the legendary composer John Williams, who was known for scoring all nine movies in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga. While Clouser is humbled by this achievement, he admitted in...

Who Is Amanda In Saw? Jigsaw's Apprentice & Future After Saw X Explained
Image
Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Saw X.

Shawnee Smith reprises her role as Amanda Young in Saw X, offering one of her most memorable performances yet. Saw X takes place before Saw III, giving Amanda the chance to return and show a different side to her character and relationship with Jigsaw. Amanda's loyalty to Jigsaw is tested in Saw X, and seeds of dissent are shown that foreshadow her future conflicts in the Saw franchise.

Amanda Young returns in Saw X, and the character has a long history in the Saw franchise. Shawnee Smith previously portrayed Amanda Young in the first three Saw films, and her demise in Saw III has largely left her out of the Saw franchise since. However, like Jigsaw himself, the Saw movies like to play games. Saw X takes place before the events of Saw III, giving Amanda the chance to return and...

[Review] Saw X is a Gruesome Game of Scams and Schemes
Image
The Saw franchise, notorious for its mind-bending traps and twisted morality, is back with Saw X, a semi-prequel that finds its place snugly between the first and second films. Directed by Kevin Greutert and crafted by writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, this chapter promises a fresh, albeit macabre, spin on the series.

We’re thrown back into the twisted world of John Kramer, and who better to lead us than the brilliant Tobin Bell? His return is a real treat, a silver lining to the franchise that had to say goodbye to him way too soon. Bell isn’t just back; he’s delving deeper, giving us more layers to John Kramer than we’ve seen before. Saw X takes a slightly more cinematic route, allowing us a peek behind the curtain. Instead of just the menacing voice behind a tape recorder and the architect of deadly traps, we...

Saw X Producers Admit Regret Over Killing Off Tobin Bell's Jigsaw Early in the Series
Image
Though he's long been dead in Saw lore, Tobin Bell's Jigsaw remains one of the horror genre's most popular characters, and the franchise's producers showing soem regret over killing off the character so early.

In the original Saw, it was revealed that the events of the film had been orchestrated by Bell's John Kramer, aka "Jigsaw." It was also revealed how the character had terminal cancer, and he pulls off one last "game" before his death in the second sequel, Saw III. Jigsaw has been referenced with continued special appearances in the following sequels, though he wouldn't have as big of a presence in any of the films again until the newest installment, Saw X, which is set in between the first and second movies.

Tobin Bell
Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review), playing in theaters now. The sequel blends the old with the new, including relocating the lethal terror to Mexico. ‘Saw X’ – Producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules Celebrate Milestone Sequel and Discuss the Gory Traps [Interview]
Tobin Bell
Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review). But they’re not the only franchise mainstays that worked to bring the gory sequel to life.

Director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D), the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.

Greutert, Bell, and Smith aren’t the only returning franchise vets either; producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules launched the franchise in 2004 alongside James Wan and Leigh Whannell and have been with the franchise the entire way.

With nearly twenty years of franchise lore, history, and experience with Jigsaw and his gnarly traps under their belts, few know Saw quite like Burg and Koules.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with the tenured producers about Saw X and how much input they have on John Kramer’s lethal traps.

Saw X First Reactions Celebrate the Latest Entry From the Horror Franchise
Image
Saw X has been called one of the best additions to the franchise, with critics praising its emotional story and respect for the original film. The movie starts as a character study, focusing on Tobin Bell's portrayal of Jigsaw, before diving into gory revenge and intense traps that will satisfy fans. Saw X brings back the essence of the original film, infusing a more human element and deeper insight into the character of John Kramer.

The story of John Kramer aka Jigsaw takes another dark turn in Saw X, the most recent entry in the popular horror series, which first reactions are already calling one of the best in the franchise. Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, the new film brings back Tobin Bell as Kramer who, desperate for a cure for his illness, travels to Mexico in hopes of undergoing a miraculous but expensive treatment.

Saw X Has a Record-Breaking Runtime But Tobin Bell's Jigsaw Return Could Have Been Even Longer
Image
Saw X is the longest installment in the franchise, with a total runtime of 118 minutes, but it could have been even longer. Director Kevin Greutert revealed that the first cut of the film was longer than intended, so he had to trim it down and remove some scenes. Previous Saw movies focused on trap-to-trap flow, but Saw X has more story expansion, returning to John Kramer's character and giving the script more substance.

Kevin Greutert, director of Saw X, confirms that the new installment of the horror saga could have been much longer, even though its runtime is already a record-breaker for the franchise.

After trying to take a different path away from the figure of John Kramer with Spiral, Saw returns to his roots with a new chapter within the main story. Saw X takes place a few weeks after the end of the first film, released in...

Saw X Director Says 'There's No Obvious New Direction' for the Future of the Franchise
Image
The future of the Saw franchise is uncertain, even for the director of Saw X. Saw X explores John Kramer's story and takes place between the first two movies. It focuses on his search for cancer treatment in Mexico, only to discover a terrible fraud against him. Expanding the franchise with new spinoffs could be a possibility, learning from the setbacks of the 2021 movie Spiral.

The future of the Saw franchise beyond its tenth movie is uncertain, even for the director behind Saw X. The premiere of the latest installment in the horror saga is just around the corner, presenting a new story to connect the whole mythology of one of the most influential franchises within the genre. Filmmaker Kevin Greutert has been part of the saga since the very beginning, joining original creator James Wan as an editor on the first movie, and reprising his role for the...

Saw X promo celebrates the return of Amanda Young
Image
John “Jigsaw” Kramer, played once again by Tobin Bell, is front and center in the upcoming Saw sequel Saw X – which is indeed the tenth installment in the franchise, but takes place between the events of the first movie and Saw II. Director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, has said that we’ll be seeing more of Jigsaw in this new movie than in any other Saw movie… and due to its place in the timeline, we’ll also be seeing the return of Shawnee Smith as his protégé Amanda Young. That’s why a new promo posted on the official Saw social media account celebrates the fact that we’ll be seeing the return of Amanda when Saw X reaches theatres on September 29th:

‘Saw X’ Director Promises We’re Getting More of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw Than Ever Before This September
Image
Coming to theaters on September 29, tenth franchise installment Saw X celebrates the 20th anniversary of the franchise with a direct sequel to the original classic. Tobin Bell is back as Jigsaw, who is still very much alive at this stage on the timeline, and director Kevin Greutert promises in a new chat with Empire that he takes center stage this time around.

“Kramer is the centre of the story,” Kevin Greutert tells Empire, who goes on to explain that Saw X will feature John Kramer aka Jigsaw “more than in any other Saw.”

Greutert elaborates, “[Saw X] is an emotional journey that you go on with John Kramer, and less a slaughterhouse that you experience from the point of view of the victims.” He also notes during his chat with Empire, “Obviously there will be people that can’t handle it, but I think it has a good chance of...

Saw X lands an R rating for grisly bloody violence and torture
Image
The new film in the Saw franchise – which is going by the title Saw X since it’s the tenth installment – is set to reach theatres on September 29th, and it’s said to be the longest Saw movie yet. Judging by the rating it has just received from the Motion Picture Association, it sounds like it’s going to be delivering plenty of the stuff Saw fans want to see over the course of that extended running time, as it has earned an R rating for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use. The frequently used tagline has been “If it’s Halloween, it must be Saw“, but it could just as easily be “If it’s grisly bloody violence and torture, it must be Saw“.

Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter director Kevin Greutert (who also edited the first five films,...

‘Saw X’ Officially Rated “R” for “Grisly Bloody Violence and Torture”
Saw (2004)
The Saw franchise returns to the big screen in less than one month with brand new movie Saw X, the events of which take place between the original Saw movie and its first sequel.

Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith both return for Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.

The film has been officially rated “R” by the MPA this week for…

“Sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use.”

It’s interesting to note that the MPA listing for Saw X lists Jigsaw 2 as an alternate title for the film. Given the new movie is very much a Jigsaw-centric tale, that seems fitting.

The cast for Saw X also includes Renata Vaca (“Midnight Family”), Paulette Hernandez (“Crown of Tears”), Joshua Okamoto (“Control-z”), Octavio Hinojosa (Come Play With Me), Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (The Sandman) and Michael Beach (Dahmer).

Lionsgate teases, “The return of...

Now, per The Direct, it's been reported that the official runtime for Saw X is 118 minutes, or 1 hour and 58 minutes — putting it just under two hours long.

Saw (2004)
The trailer for the new film in the Saw franchise – which is going by the title Saw X since it’s the tenth installment – arrived online over the weekend, giving a preview of this story that’s set between the events of the first Saw and Saw II. Now a new image from the film has been unveiled, giving a look at a character who is able to return to the series because of its place in the timeline: Amanda Young, played by Shawnee Smith! The image can be seen at the bottom of this article. Saw X is set to reach theatres on September 29th.

‘Saw X’ – New Image from the Upcoming Sequel Reveals Shawnee Smith’s Return as Amanda Young
Image
The official trailer for Saw X debuted over the weekend, officially confirming that Shawnee Smith will be back as franchise villain Amanda Young in the upcoming movie.

This morning, Lionsgate has released another brand new sneak peek at Saw X, giving us a fresh look at Amanda’s return. How is Amanda Young still alive, you ask? Well, the upcoming Saw X is a direct sequel to the original Saw, meaning it takes place before the events of Saw II. It wasn’t until Saw III, you may recall, that Amanda and Jigsaw were both killed off.

Smith’s Amanda started out as a survivor of one of Jigsaw’s early traps, ultimately becoming an accomplice to the torturous madman – and as a result, a horror icon in her own right.

Tobin Bell is also back for Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.

The cast for Saw X also...

Saw X Trailer Teases Horrifying Return of Jigsaw and Amanda: Watch
Image
The first Saw X trailer has been unleashed and, along with glimpses of Tobin Bell’s’ reprisal of the long-deceased villain John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his latest arsenal of lethal torture devices, the new preview teases the return of Shawnee Smith’s victim-turned-accomplice Amanda from the horror franchise’s original trilogy.

The reunion between psychotic mastermind and protégé marks the first time Bell and Smith have shared the screen since 2006’s Saw III, which saw the demise of both characters. Bell has starred in almost every subsequent entry of the franchise via flashbacks, while Smith’s Amanda last appeared in 2009’s Saw VI. Although the role she’ll play in this round of Jigsaw’s “games” has yet to be revealed, Saw X has been confirmed to take place between the first and second installments.

It’s unfair to say any victim in the Saw series deserves to be put...

‘Saw X’ Trailer: Jigsaw Wants to Play His Most Personal Game Yet
Image
Jigsaw lives! So do all of his deadly puzzle traps in the first official trailer for “Saw X.” Lionsgate pulled the curtain back on the new installment in the horror series at Midsummer Screen Festival on Saturday evening.

While the plot for the 10th entry in the “Saw” franchise has been kept under wraps, the project has long teased the return of Tobin Bell as the series killer kidnapper Jigsaw. The actor originated the role in 2004’s “Saw” but died at the end of “Saw 3.” Even so, the character was a driving creative force and Bell signed on for several sequels, appearing in flashbacks as the series contorted itself into one of the most labyrinthine chronologies in modern franchise filmmaking.

“Saw X” arrives only two years after the series’ previous installment, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw.” Led by Chris Rock, that entry bore few connections to the existing series.
