Marshmallow Review: These Woods Hide Unexpected Secrets
Image
Daniel DelPurgatorio’s “Marshmallow” initially invites us into the well-trodden grounds of Camp Almar, a classic summer camp setting that feels almost like a tutorial level for a horror story. We meet young Morgan, portrayed with a palpable sense of vulnerability by Kue Lawrence.

He’s a kid already shouldering the weight of recent grief and a bundle of anxieties, making his arrival at camp feel less like an adventure and more like another trial.

The air is thick with the promise of spooky campfire tales, and you get the distinct feeling that one particular legend—about a sinister figure known only as “The Doctor”—isn’t going to stay confined to fireside whispers for very long. It’s a setup that knowingly winks at the audience, suggesting that while the path looks familiar, the journey might just veer off into uncharted territory.

BA Review: A Heartwarming Blend of Genre and Drama
Image
The films with the most heart and most original ideas almost always come from the super indie sphere. Enter BA, a heartwarming blend of genre and drama written and directed by Benjamin Wong. Wong’s feature debut stars the empathetic Lawrence Kao (Wu Assassins) as Daniel, a single dad on the brink of homelessness, trying to keep his lovely daughter Collette safe and happy. However, that’s not so easy when your dancing career is derailed by a broken leg and you get evicted, opting to go “car camping.” This is what can happen when your one friend can’t let you stay with them, due to being allergic to your dog. Weird circumstances and bad decisions aren’t always reflective of reality, but this...

Lawrence Kao
Ba - Jennie Kermode - 19742
Lawrence Kao
The shift away from single, socially unencumbered heroes that we’ve seen in film in recent years has allowed a number of new ideas to emerge in old stories, and now that it has evolved a step further, beyond just switching in equivalent women, it’s getting more interesting still. Ba is, at its simplest, the story of a man who gets drawn into a high stakes scam which he’s desperate to escape. It has a supernatural element, but what makes it interesting is that hero Daniel (Lawrence Kao) goes through it all whilst trying to cope as a single parent to a nine-year-old girl.

“Ba, are we poor?” Colette (Kai Cech) asks after their accommodation falls through and her takes her on ‘a little car camping adventure’. That is, to an extent, a comparative term, but they’re certainly low on funds. It hasn’t been easy in...

Review: Marshmallow is a Sneakily Unique Campfire Treat
Image
Slashers and sleepover camps are the spaghetti and meatballs of horror cinema. Counselors told campfire legends even before Friday the 13th, their faces ghoulishly illuminated by a dim-wattage flashlight. Daniel DelPurgatorio's Marshmallow follows in the footsteps of every overnight retreat nightmare … until it doesn't. A film titled after the soft and squishy treats that bind s'mores evokes comfort, but quite impressively, after establishing normalcy as a ruse, DelPurgatorio pivots from sweet familiarity. It takes some patience to outlast the film's more mediocre beginnings, yet unlike other stories that paddle in place without going anywhere, Marshmallow lands a payoff you'll be buzzing about for a while.

Screenwriter Andy Greskoviak uses typical coming-of-age blueprints to establish Camp Almar, a bunks-and-bugs escape from civilization where children of different ages spend their summertime breaks. We follow Morgan (Kue Lawrence), a timid, screen-watching boy who is still getting over the unexpected death of his...

Marshmallow trailer: summer camp slasher is heading for an April theatrical release
Image
One of my favorite types of movie to watch is the wilderness-set slasher movie, particularly summer camp slashers, with my favorite film franchise being Friday the 13th. I’m always on the lookout for a new summer camp slasher to watch – which is why the trailer for Marshmallow caught my eye. Hemlock Circle Productions will be giving this film a theatrical release on April 11th, and the trailer can be seen in the embed above.

The feature directorial debut of Daniel DelPurgatorio, who co-directed the animated short film Tales of the Black Freighter (which tied in with Zack Snyder’s version of Watchmen), Marshmallow centers on Morgan (played by Kue Lawrence of The Amityville Murders), an introverted 12-year-old suffering from nightmares who heads to a secluded summer camp. Morgan realizes that a spooky campfire story about the camp has come to life as a mysterious figure starts to stalk the campers,...

Dear Santa's Shocking Ending Sets Up A Perfect Jack Black Christmas Sequel
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Jack Black's Dear Santa movie, plus mentions of a child's death.Dear Santa's final scene includes a shocking turnaround for the Paramount+ Christmas movie, but it also provides the perfect setup for a sequel to be made. As it stands, the Dear Santa cast and crew haven't been recalled to begin production on a follow-up, but if the movie performs well enough over the holidays, continuing the story remains a real possibility. Dear Santa's ending quite clearly teases the desire to make a sequel, and the perfect storyline already exists. So, if Dear Santa 2 receives the green light, penning the script shouldn't be too big of a task.

Although Robert Timothy Smith's Liam Turner initially believes Jack Black's Asmodeus to be the movie's titular character, Santa Claus himself doesn't actually show up, nor is he even confirmed to exist within the context of the story.

Dear Santa Review: Imaginative Paramount+ Film Proves Jack Black's Humor Is What Holiday Movies Need More Of
Image
Having Jack Black and Ben Stiller in a comedy feels just like old times. While the latter makes only a brief appearance, it’s nice that Dear Santa feels so carefree and fun with its humor. It’s been a while since a film aimed at younger audiences had me chuckling along as well, but Dear Santa manages to do that. Whether it’s because of the charming cast — Robert Timothy Smith is delightful as Liam Turner — or the outlandish plot, the holiday film is fully aware of what it’s going for and infuses the storyline with plenty of heart alongside its humor.

Due to a mix-up, young Liam, a dyslexic 6th grader, sends a letter to Satan instead of Santa, leading Satan to appear at his door, delighted by his first-ever fan letter and interested in acquiring a portion of Liam’s soul.

Farrelly Brothers On The Long Road To Jack Black Christmas Movie Dear Santa
Image
Peter and Bobby Farrelly's Christmas comedy, Dear Santa, starring Jack Black, has finally arrived after a decade-long journey. Dear Santa follows the story of Liam (Robert Timothy Smith), a young boy with dyslexia who thinks that Santa Claus "is probably not real." Still, he decides to write Santa a letter, but a spelling error has dire results. Instead of addressing the envelope to the jolly bearded gift distributor, Liam writes "Satan," summoning Black's character, who begins pretending he is Santa. During a recent conversation with Variety, the brothers discussed where the idea for Dear Santa was born and why it took them ten years to get the movie "just right:"

"Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett, who we work with a lot, brought us the idea and they said, 'A kid's writing a letter to Santa, but he misspells it and instead writes it to Satan.' We're like, 'We'll buy that.

Dear Santa Review — Jack Black Stars in Farrelly Comedy That is a Holiday Misfire
Image
Dear Santa is here, and I remember when a Farrelly Brothers comedy used to be a big event. From Dumb & Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, and Kingpin. These guys made some of the best comedies the world has ever seen. Yet, the latter two films had to find an audience with small but steady box office receipts or achieve home video glory to secure their place in history.

Their later comedies were underwhelming, with several misfires. In particular, the team now reunites with Jack Black, who starred in their film Shallow Hal—a movie with a good message but shorter on laughs than expected. Their latest attempt, Dear Santa, aims for a family-friendly version of Bad Santa, but it replaces the dark edge with loads of overdone bathroom humor.

‘Dear Santa’ Review: A Devilishly Fun Jack Black Elevates Paramount+’s Mediocre Holiday Comedy
Image
Christmas-themed movies have become so ubiquitous it’s hard to avoid the feeling that filmmakers have come to think of them as annuities for their retirement accounts. So it’s no wonder that the Farrelly brothers have waded into the territory for the first time, with their new comedy directed by Bobby Farrelly making its debut on Paramount+. And while Dear Santa doesn’t exactly qualify for entry in the filmmakers’ pantheon beside the likes of There’s Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber, it should fulfill its goal of being trotted out annually for holiday consumption alongside the turkey and the eggnog.

Considering that the words “Santa” and “Satan” contain exactly the same letters, it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for someone to come up with the idea for a movie about an 11-year-old with dyslexia who writes a letter to Santa, only to find...

Dear Satan Santa: Jack Black Is A Merry Mephistopheles In First Trailer For The Farrelly Brothers' New Comedy
Image
Paramount has released the first trailer and poster for Dear Santa, which is a live-action adaptation of popular 2017 animated short Dear Satan. The movie marks the return of the directing/producing team of Bobby and Peter Farrelly, and stars Jack Black in the lead role.

Black, who worked with the brothers on Shallow Hal, plays the Devil, alongside a supporting cast consisting of Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker, Kai Cech and Austin Post, aka Post Malone.

The story focuses on a young boy who writes his yearly note to Santa, but the "crappy speller" sends it to the man downstairs instead. Delighted to have a fan, a merry Mephistopheles pays the kid a visit and offers him three wishes... on the condition that he can collect his soul once he's used them up.

Though the project is based on Dear Satan,...

Dear Santa | Trailer released for Jack Black Christmas film
Jack Black
Jack Black is reuniting with the Farrelly brothers for Christmas comedy Dear Santa, and here’s the trailer for the film.

Jack Black and the Farrelly brothers have worked together before. Go back to 2001, and we got Shallow Hal. It follows a man (Black) who is hypnotized into seeing only the inner beauty of women and falls in love with Gwyneth Paltrow. It remains a prime example of the Farrelly brothers’ near-the-knuckle comedy. However, it’s also a film with a rather unpleasant mean streak which has attracted a lot of criticism in the years since its release.

Anyway, to now. Jack Black has reunited with the Farrelly brothers to play a twisted version of Father Christmas in festive film Dear Santa.

Black stars alongside Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, newcomer Jaden Carson Baker, Kai Cech and Austin Post.

Jack Black is the devil in the trailer for the Farrelly Brothers’ holiday comedy ‘Dear Santa’ [Watch]
Image
Peter and Bobby Farrelly and Jack Black are throwing it back to the rude ‘90s/’00s style of comedy they originated in movies like “Dumb & Dumber” and “Shallow Hal” for their straight-to-streaming Christmas comedy “Dear Santa.” Paramount+ released a mischievous trailer for the project on Thursday.

In “Dear Santa,” a nice kid (Robert Timothy Smith) tries to send his Christmas wish list to Santa, but due to a spelling error, the list gets delivered to someone else whose name has all the same letters but arranged in a different order. So devilish Jack Black appears to try to corrupt the boy’s soul before Christmas by encouraging him to misbehave. The kid might turn the devil good before that happens, though. They have a lot to learn from each other.

The trailer features bathroom humor, Post Malone, and lots of Jack Black antics of the sort we haven’t...

‘Dear Santa’ Trailer: Jack Black Is Satan Cosplaying as Kris Kringle in Farrelly Brothers’ Comedy
Image
“Dear Santa” has been 15 years in the making for Bobby and Peter Farrelly.

During that time, the brothers parted ways for solo careers, with Peter Farrelly famously winning Best Picture for “Green Book.” Now, a decade after last working together on “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, the Farrelly Brothers are back together for a subversive new holiday film starring Jack Black.

Black plays Satan, who is summoned by a kid (Robert Timothy Smith) who accidentally sends his letter to Santa Claus to the underworld. Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Post Malone, Hayes MacArthur, Jaden Carson Baker, and Kai Cech co-star.

Ricky Blitt (“Loudermilk”) co-wrote the script with Peter Farrelly; Bobby Farrelly directs. Last year, during an interview for his solo effort “Champions,” Bobby Farrelly told IndieWire, “It’s a much zanier comedy than this one, closer to what we did, I think, originally.”

“It’s a long-percolating movie, like all our movies,...

Dear Santa: Jack Black puts a devilish twist on the Christmas figure in the new trailer
Image
The Farrelly brothers reunite with Jack Black after their 2001 film Shallow Hal in this new Christmas comedy that makes use of the popular joke misspelling of Santa. Paramount has just released the trailer for Dear Santa. The holiday film stars Jack Black, Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Post Malone, P.J. Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker and Kai Cech. While both the Farrellys are involved, only Bobby Farrelly directs the movie while Peter Farrelly writes the screenplay with Ricky Blitt.

The holly jolly comedy centers on Liam Turner (Robert Timothy Smith), a young boy who still believes in Santa Claus. Liam isn’t the best speller, and while writing his yearly note to Santa, he misspells the rotund elf’s name, addressing his wishes to Satan instead. Touched by the boy’s outreach, Satan (Jack Black) visits Liam, bringing the gift of devilish tricks, demonic shenanigans, and laughs to the spirited season.

First Look at Farrelly Brothers' Christmas Comedy, Dear Santa, with Jack Black as Satanta
Image
Paramount+ released a first look at their new Christmas comedy titled Dear Santa starring Jack Black. This is the first film by the Farrelly Brothers in a decade, and there are many questioning whether it will be a successful return for the Dumb & Dumber creators. In the movie, Black plays Satan, who is coincidentally confused with Santa, in the devilishly funny holiday romp.

The premise of Dear Santa follows a young man, Liam Turner played by Robert Timothy Smith, who still believes in Santa. In order to prove all of his disbelieving friends wrong, Liam writes a letter to jolly Saint Nick himself, pleading with the legend to reveal himself. However, a spelling error accidentally addresses the letter to Satan, played by Jack Black. Flattered by the unexpected letter, Satan decides to meet Liam, inciting chaos, mischief, and hilarity.

First Look at Jack Black as Satan Claus in Christmas Comedy ‘Dear Santa’ from the Farrelly Brothers

It’s not a horror movie, to be clear, but we thought you’d at least like to know that Jack Black is reteaming with the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Kingpin, Shallow Hal) for the Christmas comedy Dear Santa this holiday season, with Jack Black playing Satan Claus rather than Santa Claus! EW shares the first images today.

In the upcoming Dear Santa, “Young Liam Turner (Robert Timothy Smith) still believes in Santa. Jack Black And The Farrelly Brothers Working On New Christmas Comedy Dear Santa
Image
Back when Peter and Bobby Farrelly were still making movies as a team, Jack Black starred for them in one of their big comedy hits, Shallow Hal. He's now set to reunite with the sibling duo for new Christmas film Dear Santa.

The Farrellys are also back together for this one — though Bobby is actually directing, while Peter produces and co-writing the script with his brother and Ricky Blitt.

Dear Santa, which sprung from an original idea from Dan Ewen, focuses on a young boy, who in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends it to Satan instead.

This is one that has been on the Farrellys' radar for more than a decade now, originally set up at 20th Century Fox as Dear Satan, but now squatting at Paramount.

The cast also includes Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker,...

Dear Santa: Jack Black is reuniting with the Farrelly Brothers for a Chrismas-themed comedy
Image
Jack Black is reuniting with Bobby and Peter Farrelly for Dear Santa, a Christmas comedy with a twist of satanic panic! Black teamed with the Farrelly Brothers for 2001’s cringe comedy Shallow Hal, starring Black as Hal, a man who falls in love with a 300-pound woman because of her inner beauty. The crude humor film is a product of its time, featuring Gweneth Paltrow and Jason Alexander. Dear Santa is entirely different and sounds like something worth raising your horns for.

According to Deadline, Dear Santa centers on a young boy who, in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends them to Satan instead. Black recently teased the project on social media by posting pictures of himself enjoying an elaborate Christmas display. In the photos, Black poses in the back of a brightly-lit penguin and reindeer standee. The mysterious images sent Black’s loyal fanbase into a frenzy,...
