Silence is Golden Review: The Anti-Audience Experience That Actually Works
Image
Richard Bacon’s “Silence is Golden” presents a fascinating inversion of the traditional television audience dynamic. Where most shows depend on audience participation to generate energy, this U&Dave production deliberately weaponizes restraint. Hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the format places 70 studio audience members in an impossible bind: they begin with £250,000 to share equally, but every involuntary laugh, gasp, or utterance costs them £5,000 to £10,000 depending on volume.

The show’s architecture is deceptively simple. Regular panelists Katherine Ryan, Seann Walsh, and Fatiha El-Ghorri oversee a parade of comedians and variety acts whose sole purpose is to crack the audience’s resolve. Each participant wears individual microphones while cameras monitor their every micro-expression. The format transforms the studio into a pressure cooker where natural human responses become financial penalties.

What emerges is less a traditional comedy showcase than a behavioral experiment disguised as entertainment. The audience becomes both protagonist and antagonist, their collective self-control the primary narrative engine.

Jason Mantzoukas Has All the Time in the World to Answer ‘Taskmaster’ Questions
Image
Rafi in The League. Dennis Feinstein in Parks and Recreation. Adrian Pimento in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Derek in The Good Place. If you’ve watched or listened to comedy at any point in the past 15 years or so, you’ve seen and almost certainly been delighted by Jason Mantzoukas. Now the seemingly fearless self-described “maniac” is taking on what may be his biggest challenge yet: the 19th season of Taskmaster.

The British panel show has previously included an American player — Desiree Burch, who appeared in Season 12 — but she’s an ex-pat living in the U.K.; Mantzoukas will be the first American who commuted to star in the show alongside fellow cast members Matthew Baynton, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Stevie Martin and Rosie Ramsey.

When we talked over Zoom last month, Mantzoukas graciously let me go over our allotted time asking every non-spoilery question I had about the new season. So yes, we...

Jason Mantzoukas Is Determined to Scale the 'Taskmaster' House in Season 19 Sneak Peek [Exclusive]
Image
Taskmaster is a show meant for crazy antics. From Rhod Gilbert throwing a javelin at the show’s creator to trying to fill an egg cup with sweat, it’s become bod-standard for the comedians competing on the show to throw all caution to the wind in order to win host Greg Davies’ favor — and the five points that come with it. This season, one of those competitors is Brooklyn Nine-Nine star and How Did This Get Made? co-host Jason Mantzoukas, and Collider is excited to debut an exclusive clip from the Season 19 premiere that proves just how far he’s willing to go for those sweet, sweet points.

When faced with the challenge to “do something really cool,” with a maximum of ten minutes to prepare, Mantzoukas’ immediate question is a simple one: “can I get on the roof?” When (little) Alex Horne shuts him down, his second option...

Channel 4 Takes Celebrity Prank Format ‘Tapped Out’ From YouTube To Linear
Image
Exclusive: Channel 4 is piloting a celebrity prank show on linear that emerged via its YouTube channel.

Tapped Out Prank Stars is a supercharged version of the format that originated on Channel 4.0, with rapper ArrDee, comedian Fatiha El-Ghorri and Jls singer Aston Merrygold set to take on extreme challenges watched by a studio audience.

The move marks the first time a Channel 4 YouTube format has transferred to linear and the pilot will likely air around Christmas.

In Tapped Out, which is hosted by Nella Rose and has featured the likes of Love Island star Chloe Burrows, celebs are pushed to their limits with tricky prank challenges that feature chaotic twists. The longer they can last before deciding to “Tap Out,” the better they do, as the celeb competitor who endures the most time in the increasingly embarrassing tasks thrown at them will be crowned champion. Danny Dyer at an event for Severance (2006)
Mr Bigstuff | Trailer released for Danny Dyer sitcom
Danny Dyer at an event for Severance (2006)
Danny Dyer stars alongside creator and writer Ryan Sampson in Mr Bigstuff, and here’s the trailer for the new sitcom.

Danny Dyer may be better known these days as Mick Carter in EastEnders, but before that, he’d been a steady presence in British film for over two decades, from his debut in Justin Kerrigan’s Human Traffic through The Football Factory and Severance.

The one thing Dyer had never done was lead a sitcom – until now. Mr Bigstuff is created and written by Ryan Sampson, who’s perhaps best known for starring alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie in BBC sitcom After You’ve Gone, and for co-starring in ITV2 sitcom Plebs.

The synopsis, per the British Comedy Guide, reads as follows:

Mr Bigstuff explores broken families, fragile masculinity and carpet sales. It tells the story of two estranged brothers; Glen (Ryan Sampson), a nervy perfectionist striving to live...

Danny Dyer & Ryan Sampson in UK Comedy Series 'Mr. Bigstuff' Trailer
Image
"We don't run from our problems." Sky TV has revealed an official UK trailer for a comedy series titled Mr. Bigstuff, arriving to watch in the UK starting this July (though no US launch yet). The series stars actor Danny Dyer, best known for his various "tough guy" roles like Moff in Human Traffic, Tommy Johnson in The Football Factory, and Mick Carter in Eastenders. When two estranged brothers Glen (Ryan Sampson) and Lee (Danny Dyer) find themselves under one roof in "idyllic" suburbia, their lives start to unravel faster than a cheap carpet. Glen is a nervy perfectionist and carpet salesman striving to live a suburban ideal and Lee is an alpha male with a prescription drug addiction and a tin full of their dad's ashes. Written & created by Ryan Sampson, this "relatable, irreverent comedy about brotherhood, manhood and carpet sales" is set in Essex. Also with Harriet Webb,...

Lenny Henry in True Identity (1991)
Comic Relief | BBC launches this year’s appeal
Lenny Henry in True Identity (1991)
The BBC have launched this year’s Comic Relief appeal, while Lenny Henry has also confirmed that he will step down as host.

Comic Relief launched in 1985 with a telethon that has since become embedded in British culture. Known as Red Nose Day, on account of the red noses sold as part of the appeal, over the years this has led to many classic comic moments, from The Young Ones singing Livin’ Doll with Cliff Richard, to Johnny Depp and Sting appearing in The Vicar Of Dibley, to Billy Connolly running naked through Trafalgar Square and Mr Bean infiltrating both Blind Date and a Torvill and Dean dance routine.

The BBC have launched this year’s appeal with a sketch featuring Alex Jones, Alison Hammond, Davina McCall, Gemma Collins, Dame Joan Collins, Jonathan Bailey, Nick Grimshaw, Rosie Jones and Simon Cowell, which you can see below:

Lenny Henry, who co-founded Comic Relief with Richard Curtis,...

Lenny Henry To Present Comic Relief For Final Time After Nearly 40 Years
Image
Lenny Henry is to present his final Comic Relief this year.

The comedian co-founded the charity with fabled director Richard Curtis in 1985 and has since hosted multiple BBC telethons and been involved closely with the organization.

He said it was time to see “new faces” at the helm but remains life president of Comic Relief – a telethon called Red Nose Day that takes place annually and features comedians, singers and actors trying to raise money for various charities.

“When we first started Comic Relief back in 1985, I never dreamed we’d still be here today,” said Henry, an actor, comedian and creative who recently launched a Banijay-backed indie, Esmerelda Productions. Recent acting credits include The Witcher and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, while he created ITV drama Three Little Birds.

“I thought we’d probably do three shows and that would be it, but fast-forward nearly 40 years,...
