Netflix's Sequel Pilot To Lisa Bonet & Marisa Tomei's Iconic 1980s Sitcom Adds New Cast Members
Image
Decades after A Different World ended, the Cosby Show spinoff is gearing up for a sequel, and it finally has a cast. The original A Different World show ran from 1987 to 1993 and followed Lisa Bonet's Denise Huxtable and Marisa Tomei's Maggie Lauten as they attended an Hbcu (Historically Black College or University). After the second season, however, Bonet and Tomei both left the show due to Bonet's pregnancy. Tragically, several A Different World cast members have died since the show's conclusion, including Lou Myers (Vernon Gaines), Diahann Carroll (Marion Gilbert), and Rosalind Cash (Dean Hughes).

According to a report by Variety, Netflix is already planning an updated cast for its sequel show. While there is no word about what will happen to the late actors' characters, the pilot has cast six series regulars already. Chibuikem Uche will be playing Kojo, Maleah Joi Moon will be Deborah, Cornell Young will be Shaquille,...

Netflix's 'A Different World' Spin-Off Just Cast Dwayne and Whitley's Daughter Plus Five Others
Image
After the news that Netflix has ordered a pilot for the upcoming spin-off to the 1987 seriesA Different World, six series regulars have been added to the cast, including someone to play Dwayne and Whitley's daughter, according to Deadline. Chibuikem Uche, Maleah Joi Moon, Cornell Young, Jordan Aaron Hall, Alijah Kai Higgins, and Kennedi McClure are all now a part of the call sheet. According to Deadline, the series will follow Whitley Gilbert-Wayne's (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne's (Kadeem Hardison) youngest daughter, Deborah, during her time at an Hbcu. It's not been confirmed if the series will be returning to the fictional Hillman College (though with Whitley's penchant for legacy it wouldn't be surprising for the show to go in that direction). Moon has been cast as Deborah, giving fans their first look at Dwayne and Whitley's children. According to Deadline, Netflix has declined to comment on the casting.

‘A Different World’ Sequel Series Pilot at Netflix Adds Six Series Regulars
Image
Netflix’s followup to “A Different World” has added six cast members to the pilot, Variety has learned from sources.

Chibuikem Uche has been cast as Kojo along with Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel.

Netflix declined to comment.

The followup to “A Different World” was first reported to be in development in August 2024, with the pilot being announced in March. As reported at that time, the new series would return to Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university, and follow the daughter of original series characters Whitley and Dwayne.

Felicia Pride serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project. Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood also serve as executive producers. Werner produced the original show via The Carsey-Werner Company, while Allen also produced and...

Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Spinoff Pilot Sets 6 Series Regulars
Image
Exclusive: Netflix’s A Different World spinoff pilot has cast 8 in leading roles. They are Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Higgins as Haggins, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel, Deadline has learned.

Netflix declined to comment.

As Deadline reported previously, the streamer will shoot a pilot for A Different World, a sequel to the 1987 sitcom, which will chronicle Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter’s time at an Hbcu. The project had been in development at the streamer since last year, and the commissioning of the pilot is part of that process.

The pilot is a one-off and not part of a strategy shift, sources said. The pilot model in general is more often employed in comedy as a proof of concept for tone, chemistry among the ensemble cast, comedic timing and other key ingredients of a successful series.

Who Killed Simon Kelleher in One of Us is Lying?
Image
Simon's death was intentional, involving a deadly prank and a lack of EpiPens. The real killer framed others, exposing dark secrets and leading to a deadly confrontation. Canceled after season 2, unresolved mysteries and questions leave fans wanting more.

Peacock's One of Us is Lying is a riveting teen mystery based on Karen M. McManus' 2017 novel of the same name. This now-canceled series joins a list of teen shows with edgy premises but is sadly marked by a season 2 cliffhanger that will likely never be resolved. The series follows a Breakfast Club-esque group of five teens who walk into detention, but the gossiper Simon Kelleher (Mark McKenna) doesn't make it out alive.

Simon meets a quick and untimely demise during the first episode, which begs the question of how someone dies in detention. While death from boredom can be easily ruled out, in the show, Simon's death is much more complicated.

Vampire Academy and One of Us Is Lying Canceled at Peacock
Sisi Stringer and Daniela Nieves in Vampire Academy (2022)
Peacock is reworking its slate, and it's bad news for fans of YA dramas Vampire Academy and One of Us Is Lying.

Deadline reported Friday night that both series had been canceled after their most recent runs on the streaming service.

Vampire Academy came from Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and was expected to be a big hit for the service, but Deadline notes that the numbers didn't justify a second season.

"St. Vladmir's Academy isn't just any boarding school — it's a hidden place where vampire royals are educated and half-human teens train to protect them from the savage 'Strigoi' vampires who would like to see them destroyed," reads the logline for the series.

Vampire Academy stars Daniela Nieves (Snowfall) as Royal Moroi vampire Lissa Dragomir, Sisi Stringer (Mortal Kombat) as Rose's Dhampir Guardian Rose Hathaway, and Kieron Moore (Sex Education) Dhampir Guardian Dimitri Belikov.

One of Us Is Lying Cast and Showrunner Preview Season 2's Big Shift, New Friendships, & More
Erica Saleh
One of Us Is Lying Season 2 is a significant step up from its predecessor.

Armed with a compelling mystery, excellent characters, and just enough darkness, it is one of the year's best shows.

TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with showrunner Erica Saleh and cast members Annalisa Cochrane (Addy), Chibuikem Uche (Cooper), Marianly Tejada (Bronwyn), Cooper Van Grootel (Nate), and Jessica McLeod (Janae).

Saleh teases that One of Us Is Lying Season 2 picks up in the immediate aftermath of the message from Simon Says.

The teenagers vowing to go their separate ways after Jake's (Barrett Carnahan) death is now impossible because they've been forced back together to find out who is texting them.

The showrunner cautions that they also need to find out how much this person knows, but through all of that, the teenagers have to asses just how much they trust each other.

One of Us Is Lying Season 2 Review: Stellar Mystery Brings Darkness to Bayview
Marianly Tejada, Cooper van Grootel, Annalisa Cochrane, and Chibuikem Uche in One Of Us Is Lying (2021)
Telling another mystery after the original is dead and buried is tough.

Many mystery series struggle to follow up that first big hook, but One of Us Is Lying Season 2 manages to elevate the mystery and the stakes to leave viewers with a sense of dread.

TV Fanatic got the chance to screen the entire season ahead of launch, and you'll be glad to know that the series takes things in a drastically different direction.

That's not to say there were any significant flaws with the first season. It's just that taking things in a different direction as opposed to reinventing what made the first season successful is a sign that the creatives are confident in their storytelling.

We pick back up with Addy (Annalisa Cochrane), Cooper (Chibuikem Uche), Bronwyn (Marianly Tejada), Nate (Cooper van Grootel), and Janae (Jessica McLeod) in the immediate aftermath of that text.

Hiding the truth is a recipe for disaster.

Your First Look at One of Us Is Lying's Action-Packed Season 2

We're not lying about this TV news. Peacock's One of Us Is Lying is back for a second season on Oct. 20. And after the dramatic death of Jake (Barrett Carnahan) at the end of season one, the Bayview Four are in hotter water than ever in Peacock's newly released sneak peek. One of Us Is Lying Cast Breaks Down Killer Reveal, Tease Season 2 Mystery
Marianly Tejada, Cooper van Grootel, Annalisa Cochrane, and Chibuikem Uche in One Of Us Is Lying (2021)
One of Us Is Lying is one of the best teen dramas in recent memory.

It had a carefully constructed mystery, excellent character development, and one of the most satisfying finales in years.

TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with Annalisa Cochrane (Addy), Chibuikem Uche (Cooper), Marianly Tejada (Bronwyn), Cooper van Grootel (Nate), and Barrett Carnahan (Jake).

We are about to delve into spoiler territory, so head over to Peacock if you haven't watched the entire series. It's eight episodes of pure fun! The best part about it is that it is best served binged.

I asked the cast what attracted them to the series, and for Marianly, she felt that Bronwyn was a Latin X character she hadn't often seen on-screen, describing the character as a "nerd, with a little bit of sass."

"She's very unapologetic about being a brainiac. And I feel like there's shyness around that...

Elite-turned-One of Us Is Lying showrunner Darío Madrona knows a thing or two about fictional teens and murder mysteries. But don’t mistake the high schoolers in the new Peacock drama (now streaming its first three episodes) for the glam partiers in the Netflix soap.

In fact, if the kids of Elite could give the One of Us Is Lying characters some advice, “they would probably tell them to enjoy themselves more and get out a little bit, maybe do some drugs and hook up with each other,” Madrona jokes with a laugh.
