The Shootouts Perfect ‘Rust Belt’ Country on New Album ‘Switchback’
Image
It was just about 10 years ago when singer-songwriter Ryan Humbert had an epiphany, one where he realized what he was doing musically wasn’t exactly where his heart and soul wanted to be.

“When we started this band it was literally like a bolt of lightning shot through my body,” Humbert tells Rolling Stone. “I felt like this is what I should have been doing all along.”

Humbert is describing the creation of his group the Shootouts, a rising country act based out of Akron, Ohio. Self-proclaimed “Rust Belt Americana...

Billy Strings, Tyler Childers, and the War and Treaty Triumph at 2023 Americana Honors
Image
When Tyler Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards, he let loose with an acceptance speech for the ages, denying the very term “Americana” and pointedly declaring himself a country artist.

“As a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said onstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium that year. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.”

Despite that sharply worded speech,...

Logan Ledger’s ‘Ripple’ Cover Would Make Jerry Garcia Proud
Image
Logan Ledger has a new album of original material coming later this year, but in a bit of spontaneity the California singer-songwriter puts his own spin on a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple.”

A track off the Dead’s 1970 American Beauty album, “Ripple” was written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter; Garcia handled vocals on the recording. Here, Ledger remains faithful to the original, with producer Shooter Jennings creating a warm, easygoing soundscape.

“I’ve long been a fan of the songs of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter.

Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours Set for Stagecoach 2023
Image
Stagecoach, the three-day country music festival in Indio, California, has announced its 2023 lineup. As in years past, it’s typically eclectic, with not-quite-country artists like Bryan Adams, Melissa Etheridge, and Zz Top joining headliners Luke Bryan, Kane Brown, and Chris Stapleton.

Sunday’s lineup, headlined by Stapleton, should be particularly appealing for fans of the Red Dirt and songwriter scenes: Turnpike Troubadours, Tyler Childers, Parker McCollum, Ryan Bingham, country-roots buzz band 49 Winchester, and even Yellowstone star Luke Grimes stack the bill. Lainey Wilson, Valerie June, Kaitlin Butts, Madeline Edwards play Sunday too,...

T Bone Burnett
Watch Logan Ledger’s Acoustic ‘Starlight’ Performance
T Bone Burnett
Logan Ledger takes a stripped-down approach to his song “Starlight” in a newly released video, turning the rockabilly-tinged number into a yearning acoustic ode.

Previously released as a single in 2019, “Starlight” will also appear on the California native’s upcoming self-titled debut album, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. Opening with a swirling, psychedelic guitar intro, the song settles into a walking rhythm and sets the stage for Ledger’s emotive croon. “Starlight will be the only light/When I can hold you tight again,” he sings, handling the...

Crooner Logan Ledger Blends George Jones, Chris Isaak to Make ‘Country Noir’
Rising country crooner Logan Ledger recently released the first two singles from his eponymous debut album, produced by T Bone Burnett and due in October. “Starlight” and “Imagining Raindrops” form a resounding introduction for the California native, who works in an aesthetic best described as “Country Noir.”

“Starlight,” with its cosmic country meets Bakersfield vibe, straddles the line between Buck Owens and Dick Dale, while “Imagining Raindrops” is a wistful, classic ballad full of sorrow and warbling pedal steel. Ledger sings both like a modern George Jones with an appreciation for Chris Isaak’s stylish,...
