‘The Rookie’s Cliffhanger Ending Just Solved a Major Problem for the Show
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 7, Episode 8.After Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy's (Melissa O'Neil) breakup last season, The Rookieproved that no couple in the series was safe — that is, at least, for established married couples like Angela (Alyssa Diaz) and Wesley (Shawn Ashmore), and Nyla (Mekia Cox) and James (Arjay Smith). Sure, these couples are not without their problems, particularly this season. In a more trivial storyline, Wesley was jealous after learning through Blair London's (Danielle Campbell) tapes that Detective Graham (Ivan Hernandez) had a crush on Angela.

The Rookie Season 7 Makes Up For Aaron's Exit (But Tru Valentino's Departure Is Still Disappointing)
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from The Rookie season 7, episode 2, "The Watcher."

Sadly, The Rookie fans had to say goodbye to Tru Valentino's Aaron Thorsen during the season 7 premiere, and while his exit is disappointing, the show is redeeming itself via two new characters. ABC's police procedural series, created by Alexi Hawley, follows the personal and work lives of the law enforcement officers from the Mid-Wilshire Patrol Divison of the LAPD, which used to include Aaron. Valentino's Aaron joined the cast of The Rookie after Titus Makin Jr.'s Jackson West left in season 4. Just a few seasons later, though, Valentino also departed the show.

New episodes of The Rookie air on Tuesdays at 10 pm Et on ABC. Season 7 features 18 episodes — eight more than the previous season.

Valentino left The Rookie in season 7 due to creative decisions made by the writers. Based on reports, the actor didn't...

How did The Rookie write off Thorsen? (Who's replacing him?)
Image
The Rookie started Season 7 down one regular cop, so what happened to him? Was the exit on or off screen?

Caution: This article contains Spoilers for The Rookie Season 7 premiere

For those who forgot, Season 6 of The Rookie ended with the cops exposing how corrupt lawyer Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) had used shrink Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell) to get information on cops she could sell to criminals. That exposed scores of detectives to blackmail that hampered investigations.

Nolan worked with the FBI to track Monica down with a big firefight that had him shot in the hindquarters while Monica escaped. However, in the middle of the chaos, recurring criminal “frenemy” Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) escaped prison alongside Jason (Steve Kazee), the abusive drug-dealing ex-husband of Nolan’s wife, Bailey.

As Season 7 opened, the crew tried to track Jason and Oscar, but a drug house bust couldn’t turn them up.

Why Tru Valentino's Aaron Thorsen Left The Rookie In Season 7: Actor & Character Exit Explained
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from The Rookie season 7, episode 1, "The Shot."

The Rookie lost another officer in season 7 — Aaron Thorsen, played by Tru Valentino. Aaron entered the story at the beginning of season 4 as the ABC police procedural TV show's latest rookie, and his training officer was Nyla Harper. When Harper went on maternity leave in season 5, John Nolan took over as Aaron's To before he was ultimately promoted. For two seasons of The Rookie, Aaron worked as a P2 (Police Officer II). However, he also expressed interest in becoming a detective. Unfortunately, Aaron never got a chance to achieve his dream onscreen in The Rookie.

Tru Valentino's Aaron Thorsen was introduced in The Rookie season 4 to replace Jackson West following his tragic death.

Valentino's character was unlike the rookies who came before him as his background story was quite unique. Aaron's family was rich, and he grew up very privileged,...

Here’s How ‘The Rookie’ Wrote Out Tru Valentino’s Aaron Thorsen
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Rookie” Season 7, Episode 1.

“The Rookie” is back after a six-month hiatus, but fans who are excited to return to the Mid-Wilshire Division might be surprised and saddened to see a familiar face is missing. Tru Valentino’s Officer Aaron Thorsen, who joined the series in a recurring role in Season 4 and became a series regular in Seasons 5 and 6, left the show between seasons in August 2024. That means that though there was no fanfare to his exit, the Season 6 finale was his final episode.

At least for now. The Season 7 premiere gives a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it update on the character’s whereabouts, and it very much leaves the door open for Officer Thorsen to return in the future. During a quieter moment in the action-packed episode, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) asks Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) how Aaron’s doing and she reveals that he’s “over in North Hollywood,...

‘The Rookie’ Season 7 Premiere Recap: Flirty Chenford, New Rookies and a Nuke Loose in LA
Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Rookie” Season 7, Episode 1.

Welcome back to the Mid-Wilshire Division and get ready for more sprawling shootouts in the streets of Los Angeles, “The Rookie” is back for Season 7. The action-packed, strike-shortened Season 6 brought a big Chenford breakup that broke fans’ hearts; a shady psychiatrist, Blair London (Danielle Campbell), who even got Tim to open up to her before her; and a devious turn for Monica (Bridget Regan), who emerged as the season’s big bad before escaping in the finale — but not before she and Blair got Mid-Wilshire tangled up in a corruption scandal that cost the lives of officers. Oh, and not only did recurring bad guy and fan-favorite Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) break out of prison, he brought Bailey’s criminal ex-husband Jason Wyler with him.

Naturally, Season 7 picks up in the thick of the action with the team hunting down Oscar and Jason.

The Rookie Showrunner Previews Tim's Season 7 Story Arc, Including New Chenford Developments
Image
The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley has previewed Tim Bradford's (Eric Winter) season 7 story arc, including hints about new Chenford developments going forward. During The Rookie season 6 finale, Tim and Lucy (Melissa O'Neil) still hadn't rekindled their relationship, having previously broken up with one another in season 6, episode 6. He was also fired from his job on the LAPD's Metro Unit last season, having returned to the core Mid-Wiltshire division in the process. He also decides to see detained psychiatrist Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell) about his issues, setting the stage for his forthcoming storyline.

Speaking with TVLine, Hawley teased that Tim will be spending time in The Rookie season 7 trying to better himself mentally, such as going to a veteran's support group. The showrunner indicated his decision to break up with Lucy will come into play, with their potential future together also being considered. While they weren't together by...

One of 'The Rookie's Best Characters Is More Than Comic Relief
Image
Officer Quigley Smitty (Brent Huff) has emerged as a mainstay character of the hit ABC series, The Rookie. Although he only made one appearance during the first season, Smitty gradually became a recurring guest character and eventually a semi-regular part of the cast. At first glance, Smitty comes off as a buffoonish veteran officer of the Los Angeles Police Department's Mid-Wilshire Division. Essentially, Smitty serves as the show's comic relief, but more recent episodes prove that he's more than just the butt of the joke. During Season 6, Smitty was invaluable in uncovering the corruption of Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell) and the defense attorney Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan). Smitty might be a goofball, but he comes through for the Mid-Wilshire division when it counts. It's time to take a closer look at one of The Rookie's most unforgettable characters, Smitty.

The Rookie Season 7 Will Highlight Just How Unnecessarily Bad The Season 6 Finale Was
Image
The premiere of The Rookie season 7 is still months away, but given what's known about the upcoming episodes, it might be safe to say that they won't be as bad as the season 6 finale. ABC's police procedural TV series, created by Alexi Hawley (who is also the showrunner), has had its ups and downs over the years. Unfortunately, The Rookie season 6 and its finale were among its lower moments. But the good news is that the future looks bright as season 7 will seemingly get the show back on track regarding its storylines and execution of said storylines.

The Rookie season 7 will consist of 18 episodes and premiere sometime in early 2025 (ABC hasn't announced an official release date yet).

The bad news is that the wait for The Rookie season 7 will be long as it isn't set to premiere in the fall of 2024. Instead, the ABC police procedural series is slated to...

The Rookie is losing an officer ahead of season 7
Image
The Rookie won't be returning with its seventh season until 2025 but because filming is already underway for the show, news has continued to pour in about the procedural. For instance, it's returning to form with a full order of episodes and there are two new recruits set to make their debut--Miles and Seth, played by Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher. These developments for the show, however, have also come with cast exit news.

TVLine reports Tru Valentino won't be returning as a series regular for season 7. He made his first appearance as Aaron Thorsen back in season 4 and has since become a part of the Mid-Wilshire Division's work family. There's yet to be word on how Valentino will be written out of the show. The Rookie doesn't have a high cast turnover rate. The last departure was Titus Makin Jr. ahead of the season 4 premiere, his character Officer Jackson West...

‘The Rookie’ Shocker: Tru Valentino Exiting Ahead of Season 7
Image
Well, the good news is that this isn’t coming after a finale that left his character’s life hanging in the balance. But the bad news is Tru Valentino will not be part of The Rookie Season 7 cast. Valentino is not returning when the ABC drama comes back in the midseason, TV Insider has confirmed (the news was first reported by TVLine). This comes after Valentino was a series regular, playing Officer Aaron Thorsen, for two seasons; he recurred his first season, the show’s fourth (its second episode was his debut). Thorsen started out as the rookie cop who was well-known at the time for being acquitted of murder. In Season 6, he started going to therapy and seeing Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell), after he was shot on the job in the previous finale. Blair turned out to be dirty and tied up in the season-ending case. That...

The Rookie Season 7 Needs One Major Return After Season 6 Finale's Feds Cameos
Image
The Rookie Season 6 finale featured three cast members from The Rookie: Feds, excluding its main star, Niecy Nash-Betts. Niecy Nash-Betts' absence in The Rookie Season 6 finale was notable, as she was the main face of The Rookie: Feds. Showrunner Alexi Hawley discussed his desire to bring back Feds characters for future seasons but is unsure of Nash-Betts' return due to her busy schedule.

The Rookie season 6 ended with an action-packed (convoluted) finale featuring the guest appearances of three cast members from The Rookie: Feds (which ABC previously canceled after season 1 in 2023), except for its main star. Season 6 of the ABC police procedural crime drama series, created by Alexi Hawley, was shortened due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. The cast and crew produced ten episodes showcasing the takeover of Monica Stevens as The Rookie's primary villain, and the detectives and officers of Mid-Wilshire had to call in backup to take her down.

The Rookie Season 6, Episode 10 Review: The Finale Goes International & Jumps the Shark
Image
The following contains spoilers from The Rookie Season 6, Episode 10, "Escape Plan."

After the historic strikes forced by studios, series like The Rookie returned later in the year than usual. This means their seasons were truncated more than they would've been otherwise. In The Rookie Season 6, Episode, 10, "Escape Plan," the overall story for the season wraps up, but many loose threads are still left dangling. With two operations, one in Los Angeles and the other in Argentina, The Rookie's season finale provides the action fans expected from the "grounded" police series.

When it first aired in 2018, The Rookie was meant to be different from typical network police procedurals. By focusing on beat cops in the Mid-Wilshire Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, the show told street-level stories. However, it's also the sixth season finale of a hit network show. Thus, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox...

‘The Rookie’ Creator Explains Why Those #Chenford Finale Scenes Are an ‘Important Step for the Future’
The Rookie (2018)
Note: The following story contains spoilers for “The Rookie” Season 6 finale, “Escape Plan.”

“The Rookie‘s” strike-shortened Season 6 came to a close Tuesday night with the action-packed tenth episode, “Escape Plan.” Plus, it might have nudged the door open for a step forward in the fan-favorite relationship between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter).

Though the duo didn’t re-spark their romance in the finale, which focused on the takedown of Monica (Bridget Regan) and Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell), there were still some major moments for #Chenford, as the fandom has lovingly dubbed the pair. Those moments included a heroic sequence for Lucy in the heat of action, as well as a quieter, more emotional elevator scene later in the episode, which series creator Alexi Hawley called “the most important step for the future.”

Before he looked toward what’s next, Hawley contended with the past.

The Rookie Season 6, Episode 9 Review: The Squeeze Is a Fun but Lacking Penultimate Episode
Image
The following contains spoilers from The Rookie, Season 6, Episode 9, "The Squeeze."

Part of the fun for audiences with police procedurals like The Rookie is its weekly release and episodic format. Fans can tune in on any random Tuesday to see a few crimes solved and interactions between characters whose slow-burn relationships are easy to understand. Even better, newcomers to The Rookie aren't missing much, even if they haven't caught up with all the show's previous episodes. However, "Squeeze" bucks this self-contained trend, since it's effectively a sequel to last week's episode. As it turns out, the series' overarching story isn't over yet.

In the previous episode, "Punch Card," The Rookie went back to its roots. For all the ways this series and other procedurals like it try to stay grounded, The Rookie is at its best when it occupies a world of unreality. For example, Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neill) just...

The Rookie Finale Preview: Is [Spoiler] Gonna Die? Plus, Will an Upsetting Cliffhanger End the Season?
Image
The table has been set, and the stakes raised, for The Rookie‘s Season 6 finale, airing Tuesday, May 21 on ABC.

A lot happened in this week’s episode, which opened with Bradford (played by Eric Winter) being quickly benched after he was basically framed, by Pearson, for Mad Dog’s death (which was actually a suicide). Chen (Melissa O’Neill) went undercover as a nanny for one of the underworld’s premiere money launderers, only to learn that Monica (Bridget Regan) would be paying visits. Monica got a bead on those who tried to kill her, thanks to “Cruz Castillo” (guest...

The Rookie Season 6 Finale Trailer All But Confirms A Popular Villain Theory (With A Twist)
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from The Rookie season 6, episode 8.

The Rookie season 6's finale trailer hints that Blair may not be the true mastermind. Monica appears to be manipulating Blair in the mysterious crime syndicate. Elijah Stone and Oscar Hutchinson might be the real power players behind the scenes.

Since the premiere of The Rookie season 6, many have sensed one new character is not as good as she seems, and while episode 8 proved these suspicions were correct, the trailer for the finale implies she isn't the evil mastermind of the season. The ABC procedural crime drama television series, created by Alexi Hawley, has introduced numerous "Big Bads" over the course of its six seasons, including great villains such as Rosalind Dyer and Nick Armstrong. Some believed Danielle Campbell's Dr. Blair London, Aaron Thorsen and Tim Bradford's therapist, would join these ranks in season 6.

The Rookie Season 6's Villain Theory Is Looking More Likely After Episode 7
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from The Rookie season 6, episode 7.

Blair may be the villain in The Rookie season 6, as potential clues hint towards her true intentions. Tim sought help from Blair in episode 7, raising concerns about her strategic schemes. The finale of The Rookie season 6 may reveal Blair's true role as a villain, putting the main characters in danger.

The premiere of The Rookie season 6 foreshadowed a big villain reveal, and although they haven't been concretely identified yet, episode 7 further proved that the Big Bad could be hiding in plain sight. The ABC police procedural television series, created by Alexi Hawley, has gone through its fair share of villains over the course of its six seasons, with some being more memorable and iconic (Rosalind Dyer and Nick Armstrong) than others (Elijah Stone). If the popular fan theory concerning the Rookie season 6 bad guy (or gal) is true,...

The Rookie Season 6 Is Foreshadowing A Devastating Breakup For 1 Fan-Favorite Couple
Image
Tim is hiding something from Lucy in The Rookie season 6, sparking a potential breakup. The recurring tension between Tim and Lucy in season 6 may lead to a breaking point. Episode 6 will likely contain a resolution concerning the Chenford drama.

Although only five episodes have aired as of the writing of this article, The Rookie season 6 has featured numerous romantic developments, and one couple is seemingly heading towards an end in the upcoming episodes. The ABC procedural crime series, created by Alexi Hawley, debuted its sixth season's premiere in February 2024 (following production delays related to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes), which addressed the season 5 finale's cliffhanger. Although the show hasn't made much progress on the mysterious villain story introduced in the Rookie season 6 premiere, the episodes have been full of intriguing storylines, including relationship drama.

The Rookie Season 6 Theory Reveals Aaron's New Love Interest Is Actually The Villain
Image
Spoiler alert: This article contains minor spoilers from The Rookie season 6, episode 4.

Danielle Campbell's character, Blair London, may be a villain in The Rookie season 6, complicating Aaron's love life. Aaron and Blair have undeniable chemistry, but Blair's true intentions may not be pure. Blair's potential role as the Big Bad could signal trouble for Aaron's recovery and future relationships.

Aaron Thorsen's life in The Rookie has been complicated as of late, and his newly teased love interest might continue his bad streak. The ABC police procedural crime drama series, created by Alexi Hawley, has told numerous love stories over the course of its six seasons and 100 episodes. As the show's leading man, John Nolan has had his fair share of love interests in The Rookie, so most of the supporting characters have (understandably) also been unlucky when it comes to romantic relationships.

Towards the end of The Rookie season 6 premiere,...
