10 Reasons Solo Leveling Became the Most Popular Anime of 2025
Image
Solo Leveling Season 2 has shattered Crunchyroll servers at least twice with the number of anime fans tuning in for new episodes every week; its popularity is leveling up higher than the mana readings in Sung Jinwoo's second hunter evaluation. The series has surpassed One Piece — a mainstream anime with 21 seasons to its name — by garnering over 600,000 reviews on Crunchyroll without even having finished its second season.

As with any piece of media that reaches such insane heights of popularity, many anime fans are asking: what makes Solo Leveling so deserving of this kind of attention? While fans are bound to have criticisms about the quality of such a super-hit anime, Solo Leveling is still undeniably enjoyable by the overwhelming masses because of everything it does right.

Solo Leveling Has the Subtlety of a Boss Raid… and the Predictability of One Too
Image
Many Solo Leveling fans already know how the anime will unfold, having read the manhwa or novels. While the adaptation makes some changes, it still follows the major plot beats. Like most adaptations, there’s a divide between those familiar with the source material and anime-only viewers. However, even without reading the manhwa, fans can pick up on foreshadowing and common theories to predict future events. Solo Leveling isn’t particularly subtle with its storytelling—while some secrets remain, the general direction of the plot and key character fates are often easy to anticipate.

Character deaths play a major role in Solo Leveling. From the very first episode, the brutality of Sung Jinwoo’s world is clear, marked by the sudden, widespread deaths of his comrades. Nearly every arc has reinforced this theme, solidifying the anime’s dark tone. As a result, fans expect casualties—it’s just a matter...

Solo Leveling Season 2 Episode 9 Review – Sung Jinwoo Is More Than Just a Good Action Hero
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for Solo Leveling Season 2 Episode 9.

I have been seeing a lot of negative remarks and lower ratings for this episode of Solo Leveling, and I cannot seem to understand why. The way the story has gone, it shouldn’t be surprising that Sung Jinwoo will be balling his eyes out when his mother wakes up from the mana equivalent of a lifelong coma. This is a guy who was being pushed around and humiliated because he was the Weakest Hunter of Mankind.

He could have quit at any moment and found a mundane job, but he didn’t. Instead, he endured all of that and kept going, getting bruised and thrashed at on a daily basis because of one reason alone; his family. He got up every day for the sake of his sister and mother.

Solo Leveling Reveals More About The Eternal Sleep & It's More Serious Than Fans Realize
Image
Gates aren’t the only way the world has changed in Solo Leveling. Magic’s arrival introduced magical objects, a renewable energy source, and Eternal Sleep Disease. Jinwoo has a personal stake in the disease, as his mother is one of its many victims. While awakened individuals seem immune, everyone else lives with the constant threat of it. With no routine screenings, symptoms appear without warning. Since the story began, Eternal Sleep Disease has loomed as a key plot device.

This disease is just one way gates impact ordinary people. While the anime doesn’t focus on them, there are moments that explore how non-hunters have adapted. Strong hunters become celebrities, and the industry around them is highly profitable. Even those who never enter a gate still feel their effects—gates can appear anywhere, forcing society to adjust. Most of the time, they’re little more than an inconvenience, like traffic.

Solo Leveling Episode 19 Review – The Importance of Forgetting Sung Jinwoo
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for Solo Leveling and Solo Leveling Ragnarok.

Solo Leveling has been on this streak of delivering great episodes without a gap. Even if they are fillers or simply being used to set up succeeding episodes, they hold value and thus grab the audience’s attention. Despite this advantage, one thing the manhwa always lacked in, at least that is what I believe, is the extensive focus on Sung Jinwoo.

An ant from Jeju Island | Credit: A-1 Pictures

Now, one can argue that a protagonist makes up for a big chunk of the story and therefore requires a majority of the attention. You wouldn’t be wrong to think so either. However, then what would be the difference between a diary entry and a proper story?

Those that focus on a singular character and nothing beyond that could be regarded as fictional autobiographies. The main...

Solo Leveling (2024)
Discover How ‘Solo Leveling’ Rose to Fame and Sparked Its Own Global Subculture!
Solo Leveling (2024)
Solo Leveling is a South Korean web novel written by Chugong, later adapted into a manhwa (webtoon) and an anime. It follows the story of Sung Jin-Woo, a weak hunter who unexpectedly gains the ability to “level up” like a video game character, becoming the world’s strongest hunter.

Originally published on KakaoPage in South Korea, Solo Leveling was later officially translated into English by Webnovel (2016–2018). The webtoon adaptation, featuring stunning artwork by Dubu (Jang Sung-rak), ran for 179 chapters across two seasons. Solo Leveling (with a global release through platforms like Crunchyroll) is produced by A-1 Pictures with Shunsuke Nakashige as the director, Noboru Kimura as the scriptwriter, Tomoko Sudo as the character designer, and Hiroyuki Sawano as the composer.

Following its success, a compilation film titled “Solo Leveling: ReAwakening” was released in theatres from November 29 to December 12, 2024, summarising the first season and previewing the initial episodes of the second season.

Can't Get Enough Out of Solo Leveling? This Underrated Anime From 2024 Deserves Your Love
Image
Despite there being very different stories and settings, Go! Go! Loser Ranger has a lot in common with Solo Leveling. Both anime explore dark and morally ambiguous topics to enhance their setting and rely on very interesting world building as a hook. Solo Leveling's Sung Jinwoo and Go! Go! Loser Ranger's Footsoldier D start off as underdogs who are climbing their way up in unexpected ways. D has nothing like the system helping him along the way, but being a monster in a world of humans gives him an edge.

Both these worlds were dramatically changed when monsters started showing up. For the hunters of Solo Leveling, gates pose a present threat that humanity has no way of permanently stopping. Contrary to this, the Dragon Keepers have defeated the monsters in Go! Go! Loser Ranger. In both anime, there's far more going on behind the scenes than would first appear.

Solo Leveling’s English Dub is The Best Way to Watch the Anime Thanks to One Person
Image
Solo Leveling’s Sung Jinwoo had an ability that no one else in the world did, until now. Sung Jinwoo’s English voice actor, Aleks Le, may very well have become the Player in his own version of the System, as his career continues to level up at a pace on par with the Shadow Monarch himself. While the debate between whether watching anime dubbed or subbed will perhaps never go away, Aleks Le is making a real case for being the ideal Sung Jinwoo.

Aleks Le doesn’t only voice Solo Leveling’s Jinwoo. He has played a plethora of big-name iconic anime characters throughout his career, from Demon Slayer’s Zenitsu to Mashle’s Mash Burnedead. However, it’s hard to imagine a role better suited for Le than Sung Jinwoo. It also helps that, with a bit of makeup and the right wardrobe, Le genuinely looks like Jinwoo,...

“He immediately regretted it”: Sung Jinwoo’s Inferiority and Flaws Are the Biggest Reasons Why Solo Leveling Fans Find Him Relatable
Image
You know a character is well-written when even the voice actor relates to them immediately. There are plenty of voice actors who have expressed this sentiment, but none are as dedicated as Aleks Le, as of late.

The Vietnamese-American voice actor provides the English dub for Zenitsu from Demon Slayer, Jiji from Dandadan, and most famously, Solo Leveling’s Sung Jinwoo. He’s done a phenomenal job of portraying the hunter and it’s all thanks to Chugong’s excellent writing of his character.

The reason why Sung Jinwoo works so well as a character is because he isn’t the typical stoic anime protagonist nor is he selfless. He’s a human being who does act on his selfish needs and realistically knows that the hero lifestyle isn’t for him.

Solo Leveling’s success rests on his shoulders and Aleks Le,...

The next phase of Sung Jinwoo’s journey has finally begun, and it is only going to get better as he unlocks his potential even more through the System. Of all the manga and manhwa in the past few years, very few titles have managed to leave a lasting impression on their viewers, like Solo Leveling. Solo Leveling Season 2's premiere and -ReAwakening- gave fans a glimpse of the excitement to come. Now, popular voice actors Taito Ban and Reina Ueda reveal an inside look into the two of the season's most important characters.

Solo Leveling voice actors Taito Ban (Sung Jinwoo) and Reina Ueda (Cha Hae-in) sat down with Real Sound to talk about Season 2, discussing the development of their characters. Jinwoo's path was described as "not bright, and he is heading in a dark direction," leaving Ban feeling "painfully sympathetic" to his character's "unyielding feelings" and "desire to become stronger." The voice acting industry was described as a "world where you compete with what you're born with," akin to Jinwoo himself, who was limited by his class -- unchangeable for most. Jinwoo is arguably Ban's biggest role, previously playing The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten's Amane Fujimiya. This put major pressure on him when auditioning.

‘Solo Leveling: ReAwakening’ Debuts Just Outside the Box Office Top Five in Limited Release

While every film in the top five at the box office this weekend fell significantly from its previous weekend haul, most of the newcomers also failed to wow in their debuts. One of the new premieres was Solo Leveling: ReAwakening, the anime film starring Taito Ban, Aleks Le, and Reina Ueda, which opened to $2.4 million, leaving it in the #6 spot this weekend. Solo Leveling fell over $2 million short of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which returned to theaters to celebrate its 10th anniversary and grossed $4.4 million despite only playing in 165 theaters. This is a whopping $26,000 per theater, which stacks up impressively well against Solo Leveling: ReAwakening at $2,800 per theater. 'We'll See a Side of Cha Hae-in That Isn't So Composed': Solo Leveling Season 2 Gets Hype New Admission
Image
The Japanese-language voice actor for Solo Leveling's Cha Hae-in, Reina Ueda, has revealed more about what viewers can anticipate from her character during the anime's upcoming Season 2, teasing a less "composed" look than what viewers have likely come to expect.

Via Animate Times, anime voice actors Taito Ban (Sung Jinwoo), Reina Ueda (Cha Hae-in), Miyu Tomita (Han Song-Yi) and Chikahiro Kobayashi (Kim Chul) attended a Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- event where they gave some insights into Season 2. Notably, Ueda revealed that her character "has an impressively composed demeanor that seems almost inhuman. I think that in Season 2, we'll be able to see a side of Hae-in that isn't so composed, but has a higher heart rate. In expressing the expressions and inner thoughts that weren't seen in Season 1, it was actually very difficult to be conscious of not making too many changes, while still showing a different side of her."

Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- is the Best Way to Watch Season 2s Premiere
Image
This review contains spoilers for Solo Leveling's anime and manhwa. Proceed with caution.

In Solo Leveling, Hunters awaken to their powers all at once, and never grow stronger, no matter how much they train. However, some Hunters undergo a rare Second Awakening, suddenly receiving an additional power boost that substantially increases their rank in Hunter society. Director Shunsuke Nakashige's new film, Solo Leveling -ReAwawkening-, feels like the moment of the animes own Second Awakening, as it once again unlocks a new level of power that itll carry into its highly anticipated Solo Leveling Season 2.

Based on the light novel written by Chugong, Solo Leveling was always meant to be a resounding success. Much like its main character, Sung Jinwoo (aka The Worlds Weakest Hunter), Solo Leveling rose from relative obscurity to becoming an anime powerhouse that cant be stopped seemingly overnight. Solo Leveling Adr Director Had One Demand from Sung Jinwoo’s Voice Actor that Helped Him Avoid Any Harsh Comparisons

The comparison between the dubbed version and the subbed version of an anime series is one of the most serious topics in the industry. Fans have always compared the two different dubbings to find out which is better, and Solo Leveling was certainly not an exception to this. However, the series somehow managed to satisfy both categories of fans.

The unique story of Solo Leveling follows the adventures of Sung Jinwoo, the weakest hunter, and his struggles to become the strongest hunter in a world filled with monsters. In the Japanese version, Sung Jinwoo is voiced by Taito Ban, and in the English version, Aleks Le takes on this responsibility. In a recent interview, the English...
