Justin Bieber Wasn’t Melting Down — He Was Locked In
Image
In between standing on business in paparazzi clashes and dodging endless rumors about his personal life, it turns out Justin Bieber was busy in the studio, making a genuinely interesting album. Swag is full of well-chosen collaborators — Gunna, Sexyy Red, Cash Cobain, Lil B, Dijon — confessional lyrics, and even surprisingly self-aware skits recorded with Druski.

In the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, we break down the last few years of Bieber’s life and career, with Jeff Ihaza (who wrote a smart piece on Bieber’s...

Cash Cobain on Justin Bieber ‘Swag’ Collaboration: “We Were Just in There Being Free”
Image
Those even casually familiar with hip-hop have already long-known Cash Cobain as one of the most-promising, fastest-rising rapper-producers in the game. A week since Justin Bieber’s Swag released, the rest of the music world may be getting to know that too.

Cobain delivered one of the best features on Bieber’s latest album, released on July 11, the highest-profile moment in the rapper’s career so far, with Cobain taking the opening verse on Swag’s title track.

As Cobain, a member of Xxl’s 2024 Freshman class, tells The Hollywood Reporter, that collaboration started earlier this year after he saw Bieber posted his song “Trippin on a Yacht” online. He Dm’d Bieber after, writing that “we had to make some fire together.”

“We were chopping it up since then, and then one day, he was in New York and he was like, ‘Yo, pull up on me,’” Cobain says.

Justin Bieber Reshares Post Describing Clipse Fans as “Bitter Grown Men Who Collect Kaws Dolls”
Image
This past Friday, Justin Bieber unexpectedly went head-to-head with Clipse by releasing his surprise new album, Swag, on the same day as their highly anticipated reunion project, Let God Sort Em Out. Over the weekend, he reshared a post on his Instagram Story that praises Swag and disses Clipse’s new project, as well as their fans.

“Justice is served,” wrote Kerwin Frost, a fashion designer who first gained attention due to his interviews with celebrities including Tyler, the Creator, Sza, and Post Malone. “[Justin Bieber] emptied the clip.”

“This is the only album that matters right now,” Frost continued. “This album is way better than the Clipse. Clipse is for bitter grown men who collect Kaws dolls and shop at Kith and Union.”

Frost later responded to Bieber reposting his message by writing, “Birds of a feather, crash out together.”

Kaws is an artist and designer known...

Justin Bieber Finally Had ‘100% Creative Freedom’ on ‘Swag’ After Scooter Braun Split: Source
Image
Freedom sounds good on Justin Bieber’s Swag. On Friday, the pop king marked his return with his new album, and a source close to the musician tells Rolling Stone it’s “the purest form” of Bieber we’ve ever seen, especially after “breaking away” from longtime manager Scooter Braun.

“Breaking away from Scooter Braun and his team has been something that Justin has wanted for so long, and now that he’s fully free, he could finally share this album with his fans and with the world,” says the source.

Justin Bieber Proves He’s More Than Ok on the Genuinely Pretty Great ‘Swag’
Image
Just in case it’s not clocking to you, Justin Bieber is so standing on business right now. The pop superstar is back with his excellent new surprise album Swag, a comeback he announced only hours before it dropped. It’s been four years since we’ve gotten new music from Bieber, and he’s got a lot to say, since he’s been through it in recent years. It’s got slick R&b, raw voice-memo rock-guitar sketches, experimental collabos with Mk.gee and Dijon. He throws down with Cash Cobain,...

Justin Bieber ‘as we’ve never heard him before’: What the critics are saying about the surprise album ‘Swag’
Image
Earlier today, Justin Bieber shocked the music world by releasing his first album in four years with less than 24 hours' notice.

And now Swag, the Canadian pop star's seventh studio album, is out in the world, and critics are weighing in on their initial reactions to the record.

Across the board, music writers are recognizing this as something other than a triumphant pop return for Bieber, who has become a father since 2021's Justice. Swag is emotional and confessional that feels at least somewhat new for Bieber.

"Within a couple tracks of Swag, it’s pretty clear this is Bieber as we’ve never really heard him before — stripped of most of his usual big pop trappings, with a much more organic-sounding, alt-r&b-focused sound aided by recognizable sonic architects like Dijon, Mk.Gee and new primary artistic partner Carter Lang supporting his tender ballads of love and devotion," writes Billboard's Andrew Unterberger.

Justin Bieber Addresses Rumors of Marriage Struggles on New Album ‘Swag’: ‘I Ain’t Walking Away’
Image
Justin Bieber is still a wife guy on his new album Swag. The singer announced the surprise album less than 12 hours before its release, with billboards and a flurry of Instagram posts signaling its arrival.

With how fraught the past few years of Bieber’s life and career have been, many were curious about what the sound and themes of his new album would be. Since 2021’s Justice, Bieber’s been relatively quiet on the career front. He canceled most of his Justice tour dates, needing to prioritize his physical...

Justin Bieber Releases Surprise New Album Swag: Stream
Image
And just like that, Justin Bieber dropped his seventh studio album, Swag.

The new album album, released via Def Jam, was announced just yesterday (July 10th) via billboards posted in various cities around the world, including Los Angeles, New York City and Reykjavik, Iceland. Bieber shared a host of videos and photos on his Instagram account, including some that revealed the album’s 21-song tracklist.

Swag is the first new Bieber album since his 2021 full-length, Justice. Guest contributors include Lil B, Dijon, Gunna, mk.gee, Daniel Caesar, Sexxy Redd, Druski, and Cash Cobain.

The album arrives during a tough year for the pop star; just last month, he took to Instagram to report feeling “broken,” writing, “Don’t you think if I could have fixed myself I would have already?”

That admission followed a Bieber representative issuing a statement denying that the pop star was ever a victim of Sean “Diddy” Combs,...

Well…

Fans Are Sure Justin Bieber Is Teasing A New Musical Era With Intimate Photo

However, fans are convinced that this dry spell is about to end after the ‘Ghost’ hitmaker shared some cryptic posts on Instagram.

It all started on Sunday, Oct. 20, when the newly minted father, 30, took to Instagram to share a carousel of pics that got fans raising their eyebrows. In some of the pics, it looks as if Bieber is in the studio working on some new tunes on pianos, keyboards and sound boards.

Mk.gee Is Working with Justin Bieber on New Music
Image
In a seemingly unlikely pairing, Mk.gee (aka Michael Gordon) has been recruited by Justin Bieber to write and record new music.

The rising indie rocker opened up about hitting the studio with Bieber in a new interview with The New York Times. “He’s searching,” Mk.gee said. “Anything that comes out of his mouth: That’s pop music. You can really do pretty wild stuff behind that, just because it represents something.”

Mk.gee continued by explaining that he’s not necessarily chasing a pop sound, but rather “the promise of pop music” while carving out his own path. “Experimentalism has no meaning unless it’s done on the grandest scale,” he said. “I just don’t want to join somebody else’s citadel. I want to build my own thing, my own castle with my friends, because that’s what needed. And if people want to come,...

The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat – Review
Image
Okay all you music biopic fans, just keep reading the title past the first two words. This should give you a hint that it’s not the “rags to riches” tale of the 60s talented titanic trio from Motown. Actually, this story is set quite a distance from Detroit. way down in North Carolina. And yes, much of the flashback sequences are set in the 1960s, but the title refers to a nickname given to three childhood friends. And if you’d guess that the ploy revolves around their “ups and downs”, romances and challenges, well you’re perhaps familiar with the novel this film is based upon…or you picked up the gist of it from the poster. So, get those tissues ready to wipe away the tears inspired by The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat.

After a brief flash-forward, the film focused on three middle-aged women strolling toward the aforementioned eatery.

Clairo Unveils Live at Electric Lady EP: Stream

Clairo is the latest artist to record a Live at Electric Lady EP for Spotify. Listen to the her contribution to the series below.

Claire Cottrill recorded new versions of songs from both of her albums, 2019’s Immunity and 2021’s Sling, at the famed New York City studio. The tracks have been performed live for several years now, so the recording offers the kind of comfortable, lived-in performance that allows the artist and her band to really let loose. Singles “Bags” and “Amoeba” especially stand out in these jaunty iterations; Clairo’s vocals and melodies on are on full display compared to the studio versions’ meticulously crafted sheen.

“I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to perform at Electric Lady,” Clairo said in a statement. “A huge thank you to everyone involved!”

Clairo Shares Charitable Demo for Unreleased Song “For Now”: Stream
Image
Clairo unveiled the new charity single “For Now” via Bandcamp, with proceeds benefiting the non-profits For The Gworls, which supports Black, transgender people to cover rent, gender-affirming surgeries, and more, as well as Everytown, the coalition set on ending gun violence in the United States.

The self-described demo, which the Boston singer-songwriter announced via Twitter on April Fools’ Day, offers few tricks but instead delivers a tender vocal take that embodies the fleeting bliss of a new romance. Backed by spare instrumentation aside from the keys-based bedrock and some light woodwind accompaniment, Clairo lets the devastation of her love’s limited run linger in the chorus as she sings, “I’m loving you for now/ Until it all breaks down.” Stream “For Now” below.

Despite her complete lack of Bandcamp activity since 2016, the singer’s decision to return to the platform was likely due to the charitable intent of the demo’s release.

Clairo Releases ‘For Now’ to Benefit For the Gworls, Everytown for Gun Safety
Image
Clairo released a new demo called “For Now” on Bandcamp. Proceeds from the song will benefit For the Gworls, which raises funds to help Black transgender people with financial aid for rent, medical and travel financial assistance; and Everytown for Gun Safety, which seeks to prevent gun violence by advocating for evidence-based solutions.

On the nimble, keys-led ballad, Claire Cottrill quietly professes her devotion to a person. The lyrics find her eschewing diving too deeply into the thoughts behind what’s happening in favor of enjoying being swept away by the feelings of the moment.
