Danielle Pinnock on playing Alberta in CBS’ ‘Ghosts,’ representation, and what’s next for the hit comedy
Image
For the last four years, Danielle Pinnock has been a ghost — and she couldn't be happier. As one of the large, spirited cast of CBS's Ghosts, Pinnock plays former Prohibition-era jazz singer Alberta, who died on New Year's Eve 1928 after accidentally drinking poisoned moonshine. But in Pinnock's hands, Alberta's living her very best afterlife as the show wraps up its fourth season and looks forward to the now-guaranteed two seasons more ahead.

Part of Pinnock's joy in the role, as she tells Gold Derby, comes from the way Alberta is written. "A lot of times what happens when you see any actor of color playing on broadcast television, we almost become decorations on a Christmas tree where we're just fun to look at, but no one really cares about our storylines," she says.

Not so with series creators and showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. That's very true with Alberta,...

‘Ghosts’ Star Danielle Pinnock on Alberta’s Bachelorette Party Blunder & Jazz Age Flashback
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ghosts Season 4 Episode 15, “The Bachelorette Party.”] Ghosts turns its spotlight over onto jazz spirit Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) for its latest episode as she welcomes back her great-grandniece Alicia (Ashley D. Kelley) for “The Bachelorette Party.” The newly-engaged Alicia decides to hold her special bachelorette weekend at Woodstone, but as Alberta eavesdrops on her conversation with living proprietor Sam (Rose McIver), the singer is horrified to discover her descendant is engaged to a musician. Initially, Alberta claims her concern comes from experience, recalling an occasion when she parted ways with a musician boyfriend and never heard from him again. It turns out that it wasn’t the man who abandoned her, but rather she abandoned him; she worries Alicia’s fiancé will behave in a similar fashion to herself. Alberta’s concerns aren’t entirely unwarranted when she overhears one of Alicia’s bridesmaids having a questionable conversation with the groom-to-be.

‘Ghosts’: The Spirits of Woodstone Uncover a Potential Cheating Scandal in First Look (Video)
Image
Ghosts is celebrating Alberta’s (Danielle Pinnock) descendant Alicia (Ashley D. Kelley) in the upcoming episode, “The Bachelorette Party,” but is a cheating scandal afoot? That’s the big question the spirits of Woodstone seem to have in an exclusive sneak peek clip, above, as Alicia’s fiancé serves up some suspicious behavior. In the scene, embedded above, Alicia’s fiancé briefly crashes the party to deliver some flowers to the bride-to-be, noting that she’s “the most beautiful girl in the world.” CBS Meanwhile, standing in the room alongside the commotion is pantsless ghost Trevor (Asher Grodman), who leans over to Alberta to say, “Yeah, this guy seems like he’s the worst.” The remark seems to imply that Alberta hasn’t been sold on her descendant’s fiancé quite yet. “Run, Alicia, save yourself,” Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) adds sarcastically while watching on alongside Flower (Sheila Carrasco). “Alright, the flowers are kind of nice,...

‘Ghosts’ Star Danielle Pinnock Gives Big Update on Season 3 Cast & Storylines
Image
Ghosts was one of many shows pushed back due to this summer’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with its third season now premiering on February 15, 2024. But the good news? Production is almost back up and running. Danielle Pinnock, who plays 1920s Prohibition-era jazz singer Alberta on the hit CBS sitcom, revealed the news at the red carpet premiere for her new Amazon MGM holiday film, Candy Cane Lane. “We start shooting on Saturday. I fly down to Montreal. We’re going back, baby!” Pinnock told Deadline. “We did a table read — those scripts are good!” She also shared that Season 3 is expected to shoot “only ten episodes this season,” as opposed to the lengthier first two seasons (18 episodes for Season 1 and 22 episodes for Season 2). This is because of both the delays caused by the strikes and co-star Sheila Carrasco expecting her first child. Ashley D. Kelley and Danielle...

‘Shucked’ Set to Vacate the Nederlander Theatre, but Looks to Move to Different Broadway House
Image
Shucked, a best musical nominee at last season’s Tony Awards, will end its run at the Nederlander Theatre on Jan. 13.

However, the show’s producing team, led by Mike Bosner, is looking to move to another Broadway theater, if one becomes available after that date. That may be a tough proposition, given the many spring shows that have already been announced or are waiting in the wings.

The musical already has a North American tour in Fall 2024, as well as a planned London production at a Cameron Mackintosh theater in Winter 2024 and in Sydney in Spring 2026.

Shucked opened at the Nederlander Theatre on April 4, and was met with largely positive reviews. The show was nominated for nine Tony Awards and won one, for Alex Newell as best featured actor in a musical, Newell, along with J. Harrison Ghee in Some Like It Hot, became the first openly nonbinary actors to win Tony Awards.

Danielle Pinnock (‘Ghosts’): ‘I came in full guns blazing’ for Season 2 [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“This season was really important for me as an actor,” reflects Danielle Pinnock about working on Season 2 of “Ghosts” in our recent webchat. She continues, “I had a lot of imposter syndrome for season 1. This was my first time being a series regular, and I was a replacement. I was wondering whether I’m good enough to do this. Season 2 was taking the reins of the vehicle, having that confidence I can go anywhere. I didn’t want to half-ass anything; I came in full guns blazing.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

SEERose McIver interview: ‘Ghosts’

The CBS sitcom is set in a manor haunted by people who have died there over the course of history. When Sam (Rose McIver) inherits the property, she has a near death experience which allows her to see and hear the ghosts. In the collection of ghouls, Pinnock plays Alberta Haynes, a prohibition era jazz singer,...

Emmy spotlight: It’s time to sing Danielle Pinnock’s praises for her hilarious performance in ‘Ghosts’
Image
The CBS comedy “Ghosts” has won over fans with its slick humor and the chemistry of its ensemble cast. Each character is so deeply established and entertaining that it would be easy to see why any given performer could be singled out as an audience favorite. One of the show’s shining stars is Danielle Pinnock, who plays Alberta Haynes, a jazz singer who was murdered and still doesn’t know by whom. The character’s self-proclaimed grandeur is hilarious, while Pinnock’s singing ability and the corresponding ego she gives Alberta is a joy to watch. She may be sitting in 28th place in our current Emmy odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, but Pinnock is absolutely in this race.

Last year, we saw surprise nominees in many acting categories, which is indicative of the quality of performances on TV today. Sarah Niles (“Ted Lasso”) deservedly made it into...

‘Shucked’ Broadway Review: Corn Comedy Stalks New York
Image
Puns grow knee-high – and in bawdier moments a bit higher – in Shucked, the new musical comedy that combines the winking hayseed humor of Green Acres and Hee Haw with the decidedly urban, gently subversive camp that peppered the Off Broadway scene in the ’90s with kitschy fare like Ruthless!, The Real Live Brady Bunch and Theatre-a-Go!-Go!’s Valley of the Dolls parody.

The musical comes by its unlikely spiritual DNA honestly, or however it can, through the combined and disparate talents of book writer Robert Horn and composers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.

Consider that pedigree for a moment: Horn won a Tony for 2019’s Tootsie, and has written for Dame Edna, Designing Women, Bette Midler and RuPaul. Clark and McAnally have stacked up a big barnful of CMA Awards, Grammys and country music hits. Together this trio is a match made in some bizarro Broadway cornfield of dreams,...

Danielle Pinnock & Ashley D. Kelley on Bringing ‘Alberta’s Descendant’ to ‘Ghosts’
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ghosts Season 2, Episode 18, “Alberta’s Descendant.”] Ghosts is no stranger to family reunions, but the latest installment, “Alberta’s Descendant,” delivers some of the show’s biggest twists for everyone’s favorite flapper, Alberta (Danielle Pinnock), thanks in part to a visit from her sister’s kin, Alicia (Ashley D. Kelley). The actresses, who play family onscreen, are separated by the plane of the living and the spiritual worlds, as Alicia checks into Woodstone and informs Sam (Rose McIver) that she’s related to Alberta. Curious to know more about this descendant, Alberta pushes Sam to pry for information and eventually learns that Alicia’s interested in learning more about her relative’s past with the help of the Alberta-obsessed “creepy” Todd (Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll). While they may be related onscreen, Pinnock and Kelley’s bond runs deeper behind the scenes as both performers met over 15 years ago at Temple University.

“Home Team,” a Netflix film that stars Kevin James as New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, has announced its full cast, including new additions Taylor Lautner and Rob Schneider.

7 Fun Body-Positive TV Shows You Can Watch Now (Instead of Netflix’s ‘Insatiable’)

To the degree a real fat girl might have a sway to her hips,...
