Who Is The Last Ronin? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Story, Explained
Image
Even if you're not a big fan of the heroes in a half-shell, odds are, you're at least vaguely familiar with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Though the superheroes had relatively humble origins in a black and white comic book published in 1984, it wasn't long before Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, along with their rat father figure Master Splinter, became pop culture icons.

Co-created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Ninja Turtles gained true fame beginning with their legendary '80s animated series, before the 1990 live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie took things to new heights. Yet, back when it was still primarily the comics driving the characters forward, Eastman and Laird crafted a story that would eventually go on to become one of the most beloved stories in the history of this franchise, regardless of the medium. That story eventually made its way out into the world in...

Undead Oddities: Six of the Weirdest Zombies in Horror Movies
Image
Thanks to a fluke in Night of the Living Dead’s original copyright notice, the modern concept of “zombies” has been in the public domain since the release of Romero’s masterpiece back in 1968. That’s why it’s no surprise that so many filmmakers have gone on to reappropriate and update these undead flesh-eaters for new audiences, often changing their mythology and behavior in order to better suit their respective stories.

Naturally, some takes on these shambling corpses are stranger than others, and that’s why we’ve decided to compile a list celebrating six of the weirdest zombies in horror movies. After all, when it comes to breaking the rules, no one does it better than the horror genre!

Before we begin, I think it’s worth noting that we’ll defining “zombie” as any form of cannibalistic ghoul derived from an infectious outbreak – so there’s no...

I'm Calling It: Tmnt Is About to Reverse One of Its Most Controversial Moves to Date With a Big Revival
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4!I am certain that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is ready to undo the most controversial moment of the franchise. Anyone only familiar with the cartoons and movies probably thinks I sound dramatic, but those who have seen just how unbelievably dark the Tmnt comics can get know I'm talking about the death of Splinter. For many fans, it was genuinely blasphemous to kill Splinter.

However, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 by Jason Aaron, Chris Burnham, Brian Reber, and Shawn Lee gives me the impression that Splinter's inevitable return has been foreshadowed. Mind you, the foreshadowing comes through the ramblings of a madman named Donatello, whose badass rebrand has driven him crazy.

As easy as it would be to dismiss both Donatello and his ramblings in this issue, I think there is at least a method to the madness - if not from Donatello, then from the story itself.

Donatello has revealed to his brothers that Splinter is alive again, bringing an iconic character back to the franchise in a truly haunting fashion.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 by Jason Aaron, Chris Burnham, Brian Reber and Shawn Lee shows readers what Donatello has been up to in the Tmnt's new era. As it turns out, Donatello has been held captive in a mutant zoo and forced to fight for his life. When his brothers finally reunite with him, an unhinged Donatello declares, "Master Splinter is back from the dead!"

Donatello is referring to a dead, decaying rat on his shoulder, and he's the only ninja turtle...

Peter Renaday, a longtime and prolific voice actor best known as the voice of rat sensei Master Splinter in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series, died Sunday, September 8, at his home in Burbank, California. He was 89.

News of his death was shared on social media by friend and Turtles costar Townsend Coleman, who voiced the character of Michaelangelo on the immensely popular generational touchstone animated series of the 1980s-’90s.

10 Best Superhero Team Movies
Image
When people think of superheroes, usually singular names come to mind: Spider-Man, Iron Man, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. However, many of the best superhero films are based on teams. What makes team films fun is the diversity of powers and abilities featured in one film. Not only that but there is a natural added layer of complexity when juggling multiple personalities.

Producing a good superhero team movie is not easy. Many superhero team movies focus too much on singular characters, relegating others to supporting roles, and some feature so many characters that it feels like a gigantic, convoluted fan service. The best superhero team movies feel like they have more than one protagonist, with multiple characters having similar importance despite their different attributes.

10 Unbelievably Dark Moments from the Original Tmnt Comics
Image
The original Mirage Studios Tmnt comic series is significantly darker and more mature than the modern kid-friendly version. The Turtles were originally trained to kill, and their brutal actions showed them in a murderous light right from the start. Dark moments in the original Tmnt comics include gruesome deaths, disturbing alien encounters, and ruthless killings by the Turtles themselves.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a team of four radical mutant teens who like to goof off, have fun, and casually save the world from total annihilation. At least, thats how theyve come to be known. However, in the original Mirage Studios Tmnt comic series, the Turtles were much, much darker. There were no bright colors, no pizza time, and certainly no Cowabungas to be had in the original series. Instead, fans got an edgy black and white indie comic featuring four hardcore mutants living in the sewers of New York,...

Jackie Chan Had A Major Role In Disney's Mulan & You May Have Never Seen (Or Heard) It
Image
The huge success of "Aladdin," particularly the success of Robin Williams' performance as the Genie, changed everything for American animation. Disney started using more and more celebrities in its voice casts until the art of voice acting became something big-name actors would talk about as being an "easy" gig they could do in their pajamas in a short few days, while studios turned stunt casting into a marketing ploy that hurts the movies themselves.

While we most commonly associate this practice with American voice casts, in reality, Disney does this abroad too — with A-list actors and celebrities doing voices in international dubs for their movies. One such actor who has done dubbing for a Disney movie is Jackie Chan, the legendary action star and physical comedian. Chan has also had a long and prolific career in animation (he even had his own animated series!), playing characters in "Kung Fu Panda,...

With a visual cel-shaded look that is reminiscent of Sony’s animated Spider-Man movies and adding to the otherwise expansive comic book lore by introducing a new villain called Superfly (voiced by Ice Cube) to the mix, this newest entry into the turtle’s theatrical career seems to already be a surefire success with the movie already crossing one hundred million dollars globally at the box office and holding a very high score on rotten tomatoes both with audiences and critics.

Considering the fact that we are all now going to have to wait a good amount of time for the inevitable sequel (as Mutant Mayhem did have a mid-credits scene that teased some very familiar villains), both old...

Tmnt: Shredder's Revenge Dimension Shellshock Dlc - Release Date, Price, New Characters
Image
A Dlc expansion for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, titled Dimension Shellshock is on the way, and will bring a new game mode, playable characters, and more. The pixel art beat-em-up game originally released on all major gaming platforms in 2022, eventually making its way to mobile devices in early 2023 as well. Very well received upon release, Tmnt: Shredder's Revenge pays homage to the classic arcade games featuring the iconic shelled heroes, and the Dimension Shellshock Dlc will only serve to broaden the experience.

Shredder's Revenge has a relatively short Story Mode, but a large cast of playable characters, challenges to complete in every episode, and both local and online multiplayer help boost replayability. Dimension Shellshock seems to be a moderately sized expansion for the moderately sized Shredder's Revenge, delivering new content but not expanding the game's story. The Dimension Shellshock Dlc will also be accompanied by the game's second free content update.

Tmnt Gives Jackie Chan the Best Master Splinter Scene
Image
The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, now playing in theaters.

When it comes to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adaptations, it's safe to say the Heroes in a Half Shell are the main focus. Some iterations do give Master Splinter his time in the limelight. But it's usually reserved for when villains like Shredder and the Foot invade the sewers and come looking for a brawl.

Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem drastically switches this up, though, with Jackie Chan's Master Splinter. Here, Splinter, as pacifist as he is, has to go on the offensive. In the process, the film produces the best Splinter action sequence ever for a couple of endearing reasons, reminding audiences why Splinter is the emotional anchor of the property.

Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem's 10 Biggest Easter Eggs
Image
The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, now in theaters.

As Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem takes place, the Heroes in a Half Shell definitely feel like kids today. It's a modern glow-up with the 15-year-old Turtles being written for a Gen Z audience who just want to live up top and feel "normal." As expected, Master Splinter rebukes this notion, so he can protect his boys as much as possible.

It leads to a generational divide, with two distinct eras at play in a very meta way. As the heroes end up finding themselves in the midst of a scary war, it results in Mutant Mayhem unraveling quite a few Easter eggs. Not just in terms of the source material, but pop culture in general, to inform why these boys are the way they are.

Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem Radically Changed the Utroms - For the Better
Image
The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, now playing in theaters.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem heavily changes a lot of what fans know about the Ninja Turtles. From how the teenage turtles act to the world around them, things are quite different from the franchise's other continuities. This can be seen in how the movie's secondary antagonist references a classic species from previous shows and comic books.

Cynthia Utrom attempts to use the turtles to harness the power of the mutagenic ooze. Interestingly, her last name is the same as an alien group from the original comics and the franchise's 2003 cartoon. The suggestion is that these extraterrestrials now have a much more earthbound origin. While this might be the biggest change among many in Mutant Mayhem, it's mostly for the better.

This post contains spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" follows the long tradition of reimagining the long-running franchise with every new adaptation, each new film and TV series changing character backstories, motivations, and relationships. In the case of "Mutant Mayhem," we get a brand new origin story for Master Splinter that's more meta and quite hilarious, a completely different Baxter Stockman, a redesign for the Turtles that highlights the teenage part of "Tmnt," and a radically different dynamic between the Turtles and classic villains like Bebop and Rocksteady.

The film also introduces new characters, such as the villainous Cynthia. She leads the Techno Cosmic Research Institute (Tcri) that hired Baxter Stockman to develop a mutagen that could create mutant creatures to be used as weapons. Played by Maya Rudolph, Cynthia is cool, funny, very weird, and threatening. Of course, arguably the most...

Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem's Ending, Explained
Image
The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, now playing in theaters.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the Heroes in a Half Shell face their biggest test. Granted, it's their first large scale mission after beating down thugs in Manhattan over the course of a few months. Still, it's not something one would expect 15-year-olds to be capable of handling.

The evil Superfly (played by Ice Cube) fully accounts for them as he hatches a plan to wreak havoc on New York, and he's desperate to mutate the wildlife population. In the process, he hopes to spread this mutation plot across the world, killing off or enslaving the pockets of humanity that remain. Luckily, the brothers band together and get much-needed assistance, creating a wild, explosive Mutant Mayhem finale.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director credits Spider-Verse with opening the door to unique animation
Image
When CG animation began to take hold following the release of Toy Story, there was a period where a lot of the movies looked quite similar. Little by little, the various animation studios added their own stylistic flourishes, but it wasn’t until the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were it felt like there was a real mainstream departure from the previous style. Since the success of Spider-Verse, we’ve seen more animated movies embrace a unique style, including the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

While speaking with THR, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe credited Spider-Verse with giving them more confidence in their style. “The first Spider-Verse really opened a lot of doors,” Rowe said. “It really made it okay for studios to take chances on a film looking unique and maybe having a little bit more sophistication and emotional maturity in its storytelling.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Features The Same Villainous Plot As The First X-Men Movie
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."

Most of us agree that the remarkable diversity present among human beings is a net good, a quality that provides the world with culture, perspectives of all kinds, and a richness to life. Of course, these differences can lead to people's implicit biases taking hold, and whether it's discrimination based on things like class, race, creed, or lack thereof, life can become increasingly frustrating, difficult, and even dangerous for those in the minority. Wouldn't it be so much easier for people in this situation to have a way to flip the circumstances, to either become the majority themselves or, in a more extreme fashion, get rid of everyone else (or somehow homogenize them)?

It's that dark fantasy which many a social parable has delved into, so it's no surprise that two films about misfit, outcast superhero teams feature villains...

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” – 15 Horror Icons Who Appeared in Nickelodeon’s 2012 Animated Series
Image
While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.

If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.

While there’s an inherent connection to horror in the various mutants and monsters that pop up throughout the franchise, no rendition embraces the genre nearly as much as this one. In addition to references to classics like Alien, Friday the 13th, and The Evil Dead, the series employed several notable horror actors throughout its 124-episode run.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Ending Explained: Can I Kick It?
Image
This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist. This article also contains major spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."

When Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" comic book in 1984, they were deliberately riffing on several comic books of the early '80s that were already quite popular. Yet their concept was so out there, it looks increasingly bizarre on paper the longer you look at it: a quartet of baby turtles becomes mutated and anthropomorphized, grow into wisecracking teenagers, get trained in martial arts by a mutant rat who raises them (and names them after famous Renaissance artists), and fight crime. How could these outrageous characters and their wacky story be easily accepted?

The answer, as it turned out, was "easily and rapidly.

Which Ninja Turtle is the Strongest, According to Leonardo
Image
Leonardo is the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the most skilled in weapons combat and ninjutsu. This means that he is the most qualified of his brothers to accurately assess which of them is the strongest on the team, and according to Leo, one Turtle brother stands out above the rest.

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles consisted of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, and all of them were led by their father and master, Splinter. While they started on an equal playing field, Leonardo quickly proved to be the most focused, which directly translated to him being more skilled than his brothers. So, once they started going out on patrol, Master Splinter decided that Leonardo would be the Tmnt's leader, a position Leo took very seriously - and still does to this day. However, despite the fact that Leonardo was the most focused and skilled, he still wasn’t the strongest,...

90s Tmnt Fans Were Robbed of Splinter’s Secret Mutant Power
Image
Mutants in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe aren’t usually granted superhuman abilities like those of other franchises, though that didn’t stop Master Splinter from obtaining his own ‘mutant power’. Unfortunately for the ‘90s Tmnt fans, they were robbed of seeing it in the classic cartoon, as this particular power wouldn’t be utilized to its fullest extent until the current continuity of Idw Publishing’s Tmnt comic book series.

The mutants that exist in Tmnt are mostly former humans or animals that took on one major trait from the other. For instance, the Ninja Turtles themselves originated as regular turtles, until they were mutated and became anthropomorphic. Meanwhile, Bebop and Rocksteady were originally humans who mutated into a humanoid rhino and a humanoid warthog. In both cases, however, the mutants-in-question didn’t receive any special powers aside from perhaps heightened strength and agility - which is something...

Tmnt Confirms the Real Reason the Turtles are the Best Ninjas
Image
It’s a known fact that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the best ninja warriors in their established universe, but it seems fans may have been inadvertently misled as to why/how that’s the case. That is, until the current Tmnt continuity seemingly confirmed the real reason why the Turtles are the best ninjas–a secret that was exposed with the introduction of the newest Fifth Turtle.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proved their mettle in the first installment of the original Tmnt comic book series by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. In it, the Turtles murdered Shredder, who was the leader of the elite group of assassins known as the Foot Clan. Shredder was arguably the greatest ninja in the world, and the Ninja Turtles killed him when they were just teenagers. So, how did this happen? Fans have been led to believe that Master Splinter’s fighting style is unparalleled,...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: Early versions of the movie included Shredder
Image
When you think of the various villains of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you likely think of Shredder. Although the leader of the Foot Clan has been the arch-enemy of the Turtles for decades, Shredder won’t be featured in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, but that wasn’t always the case.

While speaking with io9, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe revealed that early versions of the movie included Shredder as the main villain.

“The early version of the film [was] very different from what you’re seeing on screen,” Rowe said. “They were just in high school the entire movie. Shredder was the villain. And then part of the process of making this—and that’s one of the amazing things about animation—is because you don’t have to do a live-action shoot on a compressed schedule, you have a lot of time to...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: Does Zombie Kid still like turtles?
Flamer Gamer360, Brady Noon, Nicolas Cantu, Shamon Brown Jr., and Micah Abbey in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
“I like turtles.” Perhaps the most iconic phrase in modern history was uttered by ten-year-old Jonathan Ware at the 2007 Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon. With his zombie face paint freshly applied, Jonathan aka Zombie Kid was approached by Kgw local news correspondent Nancy Francis. After being asked to comment on his face paint, Jonathan’s response gave birth to one of the biggest viral videos. Sixteen years later, Paramount Pictures tracked Zombie Kid down to ask him his opinion on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. I think you already know what he’ll say.

When asked if this is the actual Zombie Kid, the official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Instagram account responded, “Oh yeah, he’s back.” The early reactions to the film have been fairly positive and I’m digging the stylized animation. The studios seem pumped about the project as well as they have already...
