Writer-director Leah McKendrick has rounded out the cast for her Netflix rom-com Voicemails for Isabelle, starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, on which we were first to report earlier this summer.
Newcomers to the ensemble include Nick Offerman (Sovereign), Lukas Gage (Companion), Harry Shum Jr. (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Ciara Bravo (Last Days), Megan Danso, Toby Sandeman (Running Point), McKendrick, Spencer Lord (The Last of Us), and Gil Bellows (Patriot).
The film tells the story of Jill, who copes with her sister’s death by leaving her voicemails chronicling her chaotic life in San Francisco. When the number is unknowingly reassigned, an elusive Austin real estate agent begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages.
Producers on the project include Todd Black, Becky Sanderman, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch for Escape Artists. David Bloomfield is exec producing for Escape Artists.

The Last of Us season 3 is officially in the works on HBO, but it's going to be a while until the new season is released.
After The Last of Us season 2 finale aired on HBO and HBO Max in May, we were hoping the wait between seasons wouldn't be as long as the wait between the first two seasons. While it might not be a full two years between seasons, it sounds like it's going to be close between season 2 and season 3.
In a new interview with Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys revealed that The Last of Us season 3 will premiere in 2027. That's the first time we've seen the HBO boss confirm that there's no chance we'd see the third season next year.
Bloys also mentioned that they haven't decided if The Last of Us season 3 is the final season or not.
Here's what he told Variety:

It is fair to say that The Last of Us Season 2 ended on a sour note for those rooting for the exploration party from Jackson. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) ventured off to Seattle in hopes of finding and killing Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) following her role in the death of Joel (Pedro Pascal). The divisive Last of Us season 2 finale left Ellie in a precarious position, after Abby finally uncovered her location within Seattle. The ambush of the Wlf soldier has already claimed the life of Jesse (Young Mazino) and now, Ellie and Tommy (Gabriel Luna) will be at Abby's mercy when the series returns.
The arrival of Abby only came after Ellie had decimated a significant portion of the crew that came to take out Joel. Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer), two of Abby's friends, were killed by Ellie, albeit one of those deaths was tragically accidental.

The Last of Us, HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama based on the PlayStation video game series of the same name, will return for a third season of mushroom monsters and character-driven storytelling. Like Season 2, Season 3 will be based on the game The Last of Us Part II, and tell the story from the perspective of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the traumatized soldier who (spoiler alert) tortured and killed Joel (Pedro Pascal) in front of his adopted daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey) early in Season 2. Abby is a playable character in the game, so the shift in perspective is an established part of the story, and an important element in establishing its themes of empathy and forgiveness.

HBO's second season of The Last of Us adapts the hit 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II, the long-awaited sequel to the 2013 PS3 game that ended up being as divisive with fans as it was critically and financially successful. Whereas the first season of the series was tailored to adapt the entirety of the first game, the dual narrative of The Last of Us Part II warranted multiple seasons in the eyes of showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. With that decision also came numerous narrative changes from the game, some of which were especially evident in the Season 2 finale.
One of the massive changes came towards the end of the season 2 finale, in which Ellie (Bella Ramsey) makes it to the aquarium in Seattle, where she believes Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) is hiding. Instead, she finds Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer) hiding out, where a tense confrontation ensues.

There were plenty of Easter Eggs throughout the second season of HBO's The Last of Us. Like all good video game adaptations, there were nods and references to the surce material upon which it was based, but The Last of Us had some major ones. For example, there have been multiple hints that the rat king could be coming in season 3.
However, there were five particularly important ones in the season 2 finale. The best part is that they directly connect to everything that will happen to Abby in season 3 and beyond.

HBO kick-started the age of the great TV antihero. Tony Soprano was a mobster who ordered the deaths of several people throughout the run of the show, helping The Sopranos become a generational TV show. The siblings on Succession were constantly trying to one-up each other with escalating acts of amorality, and we couldn't stop watching. Game of Thrones gave us a bench full of fascinating scoundrels, liars and killers, from the Hound to Arya Stark to pretty much every member of the Lannister family, and we loved them all. When I think of HBO, I think of a network unafraid to plumb the darker depths of human nature, with a lot of great TV series to show for it.
The newest generation of HBO shows includes big-budget hits like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, both of which are made in the image of Game of Thrones.

The Last of Us Season 2 has finally wrapped, and not everyone was thrilled about Ellie’s three-day trip to Seattle being brought to life. Many fans believed the violence and action were severely toned down, especially compared to the original game. While the showrunners earned some points for the drama and creative changes, not all were well-received.
Major spoilers for the season finale will be discussed beyond this point.
The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Changed How Certain Characters Died in the Game
While the final episode of The Last of Us Season 2 followed the same story beats as the original game, along with unnecessary additions like giving Ellie a detour to Scar Island for no reason, some fans felt a little let down with the execution. The main issues of this episode were how the deaths of Owen and Mel were handled compared to the original version.
Sometimes changes aren’t necessary.

The second season of The Last of Us has ended. Haunted, bloodied, and broken, it is clear that Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is not in a good place. The season has been marked by Ellie's quest for revenge against Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) following her murder of Joel (Pedro Pascal). That journey brought her to Seattle where, in the finale, she ends up killing Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer), two of Abby's friends. But this was not a trip sanctioned by Jackson, as the council had voted against it. Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) ventured off to Seattle anyway, but Ellie always believed Jesse (Young Mazino) had voted in her favor. A confrontation in the Season 2 finale revealed otherwise.
The Last of Us creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were quizzed during a press conference on why Jesse is seemingly more opposed to Ellie in the series, than he is in the video game.

HBO shared a press release this weekend, touting a massive 37 million global viewers per episode of The Last of Us season 2.
However, on Sunday night, the divisive finale drew 3.7 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S. As The Wrap (via GameFragger.com) was first to note, The Last of Us' season 2 finale suffered a 55% drop from the 8.2 million cross-platform viewers who tuned into the previous finale.
Addressing that, the press release is quick to point out, "The audience will grow significantly due to low viewing levels over the Memorial Day holiday weekend." While that remains to be seen, this is still a significant drop in viewership from the season 1 finale.
While Memorial Day weekend admittedly didn't go in the show's favour, we'd be remiss not to point out that the season 1 finale had strong competition in 2023 when it went head-to-head with the Oscars.
Season 2 also premiered to 5.3 million cross-platform viewers,...

Season 2 of The Last of Us concluded Sunday night with an audience of 3.7 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S., per HBO.
This is significantly lower than the Season 2 premiere episode’s 5.3M viewers, but the network says it expects there to be significant growth after the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That potential for growth is evidenced by the fact that Season 2 is already amassing more average viewers over time than Season 1.
According to HBO, Season 2 is tallying nearly 37M global viewers per episode and growing. For context, the Season 1 premiere eventually went on to generate nearly 32M viewers in 90 days post-premiere, which is the largest audience for an HBO and Max debut season ever.

Owen tries to shoot Ellie but she manages to kill him first, the bullet passing through his neck and slicing open Mel's. However, it's revealed she's pregnant, begging Ellie to cut out her baby as she dies.
Speaking with Variety, Ramsey explained how they approached The Last of Us season 2 finale scene where Ellie kills Owen and Mel. The actor unpacked how the moment is reflective of Joel (Pedro Pascal), in particular the monstrous side of him that would kill anyone in his way.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 2, episode 7!The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin has teased how Kaitlyn Dever's role as Abby in season 3 will impact Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) as more of her story is revealed. The Last of Us season 2 ended with Abby arriving at the theater where Ellie and her group are staying, ambushing Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and killing Jesse (Young Mazino). She seemingly shoots the show's main character before a flashback starts of her time in Seattle two days earlier, hinting at her being the central figure in season 3.
While attending The Last of Us season 2 finale press conference, ScreenRant asked how the show will approach Ellie and Dina's relationship as the story progresses. Mazin explained how centering the romance was an important aspect of how season 2 was structured, and that, going into season 3, Abby will become a very similar story anchor.

"The Last of Us" season 2 is tough to watch at times. Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) brutally beats Joel (Pedro Pascal) to death in just the second episode. There are horrifying torture scenes in the war between the Washington Liberation Front (W.L.F.) and Seraphites. But perhaps no aspect of the season is darker than watching Ellie (Bella Ramsey) descend deeper and deeper into dissociated cruelty on her quest for vengeance.
The motivation is entirely understandable, but that doesn't make it any easier for us, or Dina (Isabela Merced), to watch. Ellie's drive to kill Abby is complicated -- it's pure anger mixed with guilt that she and Joel never had a chance to fully mend their broken relationship. Ellie takes him with her in spirit on her journey to Seattle, where she employs a few of the tricks he taught her -- including one seen multiple times in season 1.

If you choose revenge, dig two graves. This quote has circled around stories of violence for centuries, but rarely has it felt more disturbingly appropriate than at the end of The Last of Us Season 2.
I sat through the finale with that sinking feeling in my chest, the kind that’s born not from action but from accumulation. Grief. Rage. Regret. And a creeping sense that something essential is slipping away. It’s been a short but brutally dense seven-episode season, and now we’re here: the finale titled Convergence. Or, more accurately, another beginning!
There’s a proverb that says, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” and boy, did I expect so much more from this finale after the season’s slow burn buildup. Instead, it felt like we got a rushed sprint with a couple of missed steps, leaving me wondering why the storytelling didn’t...

The season 2 finale of The Last of Us finds Ellie on the hunt for Abby, but the situation in Seattle is worsening.
Isaac Dixon, the leader of the Washington Liberation Front, takes the war to the Seraphites/Scars by heading to their island with his men (Abby is M.I.A.). Ellie also winds up there and is captured by the Scars after her boat capsizes.
They're about to hang and gut her, but an explosion in the distance distracts them (as Isaac presumably unleashes hell on the savage group of survivors). Following that largely pointless diversion, Ellie makes her way back to the mainland, where she confronts Mel and Owen.
She inadvertently kills the two of them and is horrified to realise that Mel was pregnant. It seems her desire for revenge has been extinguished, but after reuniting with Tommy, Jesse,...

This article contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" season 2, episode 7.
Just two episodes into its second season, "The Last of Us" killed one of its two main characters when Pedro Pascal's Joel died in moment of pure, pit-of-your-stomach horror. While the season has understandably struggled to follow this early intensity spike with similarly punishing scenes, it has nevertheless delivered many moments that will no doubt linger in the viewers' minds for a long, long time. One of them comes in the intense, flashback-driven episode 6, "The Price," which reveals the dark truth about Eugene (Joe Pantoliano) and adds an extra scoop of heartbreak in Joel's death by showing that his broken relationship with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) was starting to improve just before Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) killed him.
"The Last of Us" season 2, episode 7 wraps up the dark, complex sophomore season with a tense mission at the Seattle Waterfront Aquarium.

Warning: The following piece contains spoilers about The Last of Us Season 2 finale
The Last of Us ended its traumatic second season with the death of another beloved character.
During Sunday’s season finale, Jesse (Emmy Award nominee Young Mazino) was killed by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), an act of further retaliation against Ellie (Bella Ramsey) after she murdered Abby’s friends.
“You can't just commit acts of violence, walk away, and have your story end,” The Last of Us cocreator Craig Mazin said after the Season 2 premiere in April, establishing the moral ground rules of the episodes to come. “The repercussions create more of them, not fewer of them.”
Those ripple effects have been felt all season. After tracking Abby to Seattle, Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) became unwittingly embroiled in a war between the Washington Liberation Front (Wlf) and a religious group known as the Seraphites. Against the backdrop of their cyclical violence,...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments, including the ending, in the Season 2 finale of “The Last of Us,” currently airing on HBO and streaming on the service known at present as Max.
The final scenes of Season 2 of “The Last of Us” are as intense as the show has ever been, and that really is saying something. On her third day in Seattle, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) attempts to pilot a tiny dinghy across Seattle harbor in a driving thunderstorm to get to the pier-side aquarium where she believes Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the woman who killed her father Joel (Pedro Pascal), is located. Instead, a massive wave washes Ellie into the territory of the Seraphites, a.k.a. the Scars, a violent religious sect who string up and disembowel anyone they believe to be an enemy. That’s exactly what they almost do to Ellie, until she’s saved...

This article discusses events of "The Last of Us" season 2, episode 7 and the video game series, so proceed with caution unless you're immune to spoilers.
Did "The Last of Us" just become a show that killed both of its two central characters within the span of a seven-episode season? The season 2 finale certainly wants viewers to think so when Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) turns her weapon at Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and a gunshot cuts the screen to black.
Fans of Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us Part II" video game already knew that Joel Miller's (Pedro Pascal) death was coming, and "The Last of Us" season 2, episode 2 -- titled "Through the Valley" -- delivered an even more devastating version of his death than anticipated, thanks to some tactically added details. Now, the finale's cliffhanger strongly suggests that Joel's surrogate daughter and current main protagonist has joined the show's list of dead main characters.

The “Last of Us” Season 2 finale begins the only way it can — in pain. Jesse (Young Mazino) treats a screaming Dina (Isabela Merced) by removing the crossbow bolt that pierced her leg in “Feel Her Love” and deduces, through her insistence that she “can’t die” and refusal of any alcohol to numb the pain, that she is pregnant with his child. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) makes it back to their theater shelter hours later and immediately checks on Dina, who in turn washes Ellie’s wounded back. Ellie recounts her encounter with Nora (Tati Gabrielle), informing Dina that all the former Firefly told her about Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) whereabouts is that she is by a “wheel” and “whale.”
“I just kept hurting her,” Ellie says, shocked by the violence she herself unleashed. When Dina says Nora may have gotten what she deserved, Ellie replies, “Maybe she didn’t,” before...

The final moments of “The Last of Us” Season 2 are bound to raise questions about what Season 3 will look like.
Season 2 came to a close after a mere seven episodes, right as Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) collided after Joel’s death back in Episode 2. A quick cut to black and the tease of a jump back in time are bound to have fans wondering just where Season 3 is going.
Luckily, this is still all in line with how “The Last of Us Part II” video game played out. Here’s what happens and what to likely expect when Season 3 of the series returns to HBO.
How Season 2 Ended

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the Season 2 finale of HBO’s The Last of Us.
The Season 2 finale of The Last of Us makes it hard to continue rooting for Ellie.
What started as a quest to seek vengeance for Joel has, at this point, spiraled out of control. Even as Jesse and, eventually, Tommy try to convince her it’s time to go home, she’s fueled by (and blinded by) this hatred for Abby.
As a result, by the end of the episode, Ellie is inadvertently responsible for the deaths of at least three more people. She kills Mel, who is pregnant, and Owen while trying to interrogate them about Abby’s whereabouts. Eventually, she gets what she’s asked for when Abby arrives at the theater to confront her — and kills Jesse in the process.

HBO has already decided to move forward with another season of The Last of Us, the hit video game adaptation starring Pedro Pascal, but up until now, updates on the third season have been few and far between. The series comes from acclaimed, Award-winning scribe Craig Mazin, and Neil Druckmann, writer and director of both installments in The Last of Us video game franchise. One of the biggest changes in The Last of Us Season 2 has been the restructuring of the narrative to better fit a television story than a game story, including moving flashbacks and readjusting the order of scenes.
Collider’s Christina Radish recently caught up with Mazin to chat about The Last of Us, and she asked how easily the new order fell into place, to which he confirmed, “It’s never easy.” Mazin then spoke about how the team was “confronting” these challenges as they began work on the third season,...

He regularly beats his sons, but explains to Joel that he's trying to be better than his father by not putting them through what he went through, so that's…something.
Generational trauma is the theme here, with this instalment exploring how the violence inflicted on Joel by his father ultimately passes down to Ellie.

Dakota Johnson is a matchmaker who gets more than she bargained for in the new trailer for Materialists. The rom-com-with-a-twist comes from the writer/director of the Academy Award-nominated film Past Lives. The film was first announced in February 2024, with producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films attached to the project, along with David Hinojosa of the 2Am production company. A new trailer from A24 just dropped.
Materialists stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. The very brief plot synopsis reads, “A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.” The newly released trailer is a major throwback to the style of trailers from the 80s and 90s, with very few of the usual modern-day trailer “hit” sound effects, Madonna’s “Material Girl” plays throughout and it even features a trailer narrator. Every choice has consequences. After two years of a highly anticipated wait, the record-breaking Emmy award winning HBO series The Last of Us returns.
Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season, which saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) massacre a team of doctors who were hoping to cure civilization from the zombie-like disease ravaging the surviving population. The only problem with this plan is that the cost of a potential vaccine came at the expense of fatally experimenting on the mysteriously immune Ellie (Bella Ramsey)—a price Joel wasn’t willing to pay. Now, as a result of their respective actions while searching for safety, Joel and Ellie will be forced to face repercussions from their individual pasts.
Some new faces will appear in Season 2 of The Last of Us, all of whom are from the video game. Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Tati Gabrielle and more will bring these characters to life.

The Last Of US Season 2, Episode 5 Teaser Finally Introduces A Terrifying Threat From The Video Game
In this week's episode of The Last of Us season 2, "Day One," Ellie and Dina narrowly escape from a horde of infected, with Ellie taking a bite in the arm in order to protect the woman she loves.
Of course, Dina had been kept in the dark about Ellie's immunity, and was fully prepared to shoot her in the head to prevent her from becoming a ravenous killer. Fortunately, Ellie is able to convince Dina that she will not turn, and the latter expresses her relief by first telling Ellie that she is pregnant with Jesse's child, and then instigating their first roll in the hay.
The episode also featured a recreation of what has become almost an iconic moment from the game, as Ellie plays a rendition of Ah-ha's "Take On Me" for Dina after discovering a guitar in a run-down music shop.
"[In the show], it's like, I'm fully embracing not...

The episode also featured a recreation of what has become almost an iconic moment from the game, as Ellie plays a rendition of Ah-ha's "Take On Me" for Dina after discovering a guitar in a run-down music shop.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for this week’s episode of “The Last of Us,” which is available now to stream on Max.
The previous episode of HBO’s “The Last of Us“ ended with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina’s (Isabela Merced) arrival in Seattle in pursuit of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), unaware that they’ve stumbled into an ongoing war between militia group Washington Liberation Front (Wlf) and the cult group Seraphites. This week’s episode, “Day One,“ gives a closer look at the cruelty this intense battle inspires from both sides. As Dina puts it, “What the f*ck is wrong with Seattle?”
That question is directly inspired by the aftermath of a grisly scene in which the Seraphites, a primitivist cult known for their facial scars and eerie whistles, had strung up and disemboweled a group of Wlf soldiers with a message referring to their Prophet written in blood.

The Last Of US Season 2, Episode 4 Teaser Features Isaac's Debut... And Dina Pulling A Gun On Ellie!
As The Last of Us season 2 continues, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) must walk "The Path" for the first time in over five years without Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal).
In this week's episode, Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) decide to set off to Seattle to track down and execute Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) - and any of her allies that happen to get in their way - as revenge for her murder of Joel in "Through the Valley," but they vastly underestimate the size of the force that awaits them.
In the final shot, we see an entire army of Wlf (or "Wolves") soldiers patrolling the streets as Ellie and Dina approach the city on horseback.
Now, HBO has released a preview for next Sunday's episode, and in introduces the man who leads the Wlf, Isaac (Jeffrey Wright), in their war against Fedra (Federal Disaster Response Agency) and, more pertinently for this particular story,...

Much has been made about The White Lotus' domination in the acting categories at the Emmys. It received eight nominations for Season 1 in limited in 2022 and improved to nine for Season 2 in drama in 2023. You know what other show got nine acting nominations that year? The Last of Us.
It was easy for the dystopian drama's haul to be overshadowed that year between The White Lotus' increase even with the genre switch and Succession matching its own record of 14 nominations in one year for its final season. But few, if anyone, saw the Last of Us coming in acting. It was "only" predicted to snag six acting bids in Gold Derby's odds. And now for Season 2, it can do even better.
What was notable about The Last of Us' nine nominations was that the show achieved it without any supporting players. Season 1 was a very guest-forward installment, and the nominations...

The first episode of season two of The Last of Us was mostly faithful to the second game. While episode 2, “Through the Valley,” has one storyline that is very different from the game, it also adapts one of the most divisive moments in The Last of Us Part II.
The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 — “Through the Valley” — Spoiler Recap
The episode opens with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) walking through the hospital in Salt Lake. She sees a vision of herself that warns her not to open a door. “He’s dead,” she says. “Don’t go in there, his brains are on the floor.”
Abby wakes up in the lodge overlooking Jackson. The group talks of a plan to raid the city to find Joel, not having realized that the settlement was so large. Abby suggests that they ambush a patrol and scare them into giving up Joel’s location.

As someone who has never played the video game and has attempted to avoid all spoilers, I can genuinely say I was not at all prepared for The Last of Us season two, episode two. But seriously, how could anyone, without having listened to potential spoilers, be prepared for the devastating turn of events?
Fellow The Last of Us neophytes felt the same way, sharing their heartbreak on social media. One commenter even said they weren’t sure they’d watch another episode. While, thankfully, that sentiment wasn’t widely shared, it just goes to show the love we all felt for Joel, played to perfection by Pedro Pascal.
In the aftermath of the episode, HBO released a nearly 10-minute behind-the-scenes video featuring interviews with series creator Craig Mazan, director Mark Mylod, director of photography Catherine Goldschmidt, VFX supervisor Alex Wang, and actors Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Kaitlyn Dever.
