“Azadi, Hodgepodge That Has Interesting Interludes” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Azadi in Malayalam directed by debutant Jo George, attempts to create a paradigm of suspense within the confines of a hospital where a pregnant prisoner Ganga (Raveena Ravi) is confined for her child birth.

The film is about how her husband gets her out into freedom. However, there are way too many twists and turns, none of them too convincing or even plausible, to give the narrative the flashy fillip it aspires to.

Much of this pyramid of mounting tension seems unnecessarily twisty. The only thing that appealed to me was the husband Raghu (Sreenath Bhasi)’s mulish determination to get his wife out of the hospital and her prison term.

The character is not shown as a superman ploughing his way through formidable gauntlet of goons and cops. Raghu gets routinely thrashed to the ground. But he gets up and just keeps up coming back to get his wife.

As Audiences Get Ready For Loveyapa, Subhash K Jha Revisits The Tamil Original
Image
Whenever I see a truly original Indian film I feel like doing cartwheels. And if it is original and engaging, like this Tamil film, nothing like it. Love Today is almost entirely devoted to doing a savoury probe into the culture of the smartphone.

The phone is indeed the central character of the devious plot. Director and leading man Pradeep Ranganathan, who wrote the screenplay based on his own short film App(a) Lock, is a man of ideas. Though saturated in schmaltzy sweetness and foreseeable solutions to tangles in the repartee-heavy plot, the screenplay, in spite of its filminess (as in filmy and flimsy), succeeds in tearing out a telling point on how pathologically dependent modern relationships have become on the content of one’s phone.

The film aptly begins at a smartphone factory, where we see phones being churned out. It then moves to a phone outlet, where...

Veeramae Vaagai Soodum review: You need veeram and masochism to endure Vishal's film
Image
ReviewThu Pa Saravanan’s film is so full of cliches and convenient coincidences that I wondered if the title ‘Kaadhil Poo Soodavum’ would have been more suitable since that’s what it demands from the audience.Sowmya RajendranVeerame Vaagai SoodumVeeramae Vaagai Soodum translates to ‘it is bravery that will wear the crown of victory’. The ‘king’ on the hunt for this crown is Porus (Vishal), named after an ancient king who is said to have stood up to Alexander’s might. If that inspires visions of a mighty hero striding across the screen and fighting an awe-inspiring battle, you should considerably lower your expectations. Thu Pa Saravanan’s film with Vishal in the lead is so full of cliches and convenient coincidences that I wondered if the title ‘Kaadhil Poo Soodavum’ (a difficult-to-translate Tamil phrase that implies gullibility) would have been more suitable since that’s what it demands from the audience.
