Wonder spin-off White Bird is now streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK following some lengthy delays.
Released in 2017 and based on the novel by Rj Palacio, Wonder told the inspiring story of August Pullman, a boy with Treacher Collins Syndrome, which causes deformities of the face, and his attempts to fit it at high school. Written and directed by Perks Of Being A Wallflower scribe Stephen Chbosky and starring Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, the film did good business, taking over $300 million on a $20 million budget.
This brings us to White Bird, not a direct sequel but a story set in the same universe, based on the graphic novel novel by Palacio, which was due to be released late last year. Bryce Gheisar played bully Julian in Wonder, and he reprises the role as we see what happened to him after being expelled for his horrific bullying of August.

Nicholas Hoult continues to rise as one of the most exciting young actors in Hollywood, and while he has some exciting projects on the horizon, he has already built a strong career for himself. Hoult has been around for a while, considering his recognition came fairly early with the 2002 Hugh Grant comedy-drama, About a Boy. Since then, Hoult has starred in both independent features and big-budget blockbusters, finding success in most of them.
At only 32, his filmography is already filled with some of the best movies of the last 20 years. He has appeared in smaller independent movies while also taking part in some big franchise movies. He has played the heroic lead the audience roots for and has been just as effective as the chilling villain. With a number of high-profile movies on the horizon, including playing Lex Luthor in James Gunn's Superman, it is a perfect time to look back on Hoult's career.

White Bird, a follow-up to 2017's Wonder, has set a digital release date. Directed by Marc Forster, the film expands the Wonder universe, which grossed $315 million globally. While Wonder focused on Auggie Pullman's challenges with Treacher Collins syndrome in a middle school setting, White Bird shifts to a historical narrative centered on Auggie's bully, Julian (played by Bryce Gheisar), who visits his grandmother (Helen Mirren) in France following his expulsion from school and learns of her survival story during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.
After a limited theatrical run earlier this month, the digital release on VOD offers White Bird a renewed opportunity to connect with home audiences. According to Collider, the movie will be available at home starting on November 1. Viewers will be able to either rent or buy the movie, which is based on the novel by Wonder author R.J. Palacio.

White Bird: A Wonder Story has received a near-perfect audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie acts as both a prequel and a sequel to Julia Roberts' 2017 Wonder, based on the R.J. Palacio novel of the same name, which grossed $315 million at the worldwide box office. White Bird's story, based on Palacio's White Bird graphic novel, follows Julian Albans (Bryce Gheisar) after he has been expelled from Beecher Prep and as he learns about the experiences that his grandmother (Helen Mirren) had as a Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France.
Per Rotten Tomatoes, White Bird has a 99% audience score based on more than 250 verified ratings. The critical score is not as high, but it is still fresh, at 72%. Critics generally preferred Wonder to White Bird, with the 2017 movie receiving an 86% critical score. In 2024, a historical coming-of-age film called White Bird was released as a prequel to the 2017 movie, Wonder, yet most of the original cast did not return due to the new release's unique setting. For context, Wonder is a book-to-movie adaptation that tells the story of Auggie, a young boy with a facial deformity who finds love and friendship in his new school. The movie was a major success, earning $315 million at the box office and 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, the story is continuing through White Bird, a Wonder prequel.
Because White Bird is part of the Wonder universe, many viewers may be expecting to see members of Wonder's original cast in the movie, such as Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, and Owen Wilson. However, none of these actors make an appearance in the 2024 film. In fact, the only actor from Wonder who reprises his role is Bryce Gheisar as Julian. Instead,...

Some of the most compelling moments in White Bird, Marc Forster’s mostly slushy adaptation of R.J. Palacio’s graphic novel of the same name, take place during flashbacks to the 1940s. These are the recollections of an aging grandmother trying to teach her grandson lessons about kindness. They’re also stories of survival, and Forster, with Dp Matthias Königswieser, films them in a way that avoids the trappings of sentimentality.
In them, the German-Swiss helmer behind Monster’s Ball, Quantum of Solace and more recently A Man Called Otto reaches for a specificity and a clear-eyed honesty that liberates parts of this young adult film from narrative contrivance. Unfortunately, too much of the rest of Mark Bomback’s screenplay tends toward saccharine manipulation.

The past decade has seen the release of countless films transparently designed to launch a cinematic universe. From superhero movies littered with crumbs of parallel I.P. at the expense of narrative depth to toy adaptations that attempted crossovers based on little more than shared corporate ownership, virtually every filmmaker of a certain budget was asked to make a few compromises in pursuit of building a lucrative franchise. But even in an era of filmmaking defined by world-building, few could have predicted that “Wonder” would be the genesis of a multi-pronged film series.
If anyone walked out of Stephen Chbosky’s 2017 film — which starred Jacob Tremblay as a middle schooler with facial disfigurement, learning how to navigate the endless cruelty of pre-teens in a story about the importance of kindness — wondering what happened to Julien (Bryce Gheisar), the bully who was ultimately expelled from Beecher Prep, you’re in luck.

In 2017, Julia Roberts starred in the box office hit, Wonder, and now the coming-of-age movie is getting an unexpected sequel starring Helen Mirren. Based on a book by R.J. Helen Mirren stars as a French Jewish grandmother who survived the Holocaust in the family drama White Bird. Concerned about her grandson Julian (Bryce Gheisar), a boy who is struggling to fit in at his new school after being expelled from his previous one for mistreatment of another student, Grandmere (Mirren) recounts her youthful experiences, a story of her past he has never heard, to teach Julian about the lasting power of kindness. In flashback, the grandmother’s story takes us to WWII France, to her old French village in the woods, where the kindness of a non-Jewish boy saved her life.

The 2017 coming-of-age drama Wonder was a major hit when it first released, drawing attention not only to the works of director Stephen Chbosky, but also to R.J. Palacio, who wrote the 2012 novel the film is based on. Palacio also went on to develop a graphic novel spinoff in 2019, titled White Bird: A Wonder Story. Now, a film adaptation of White Bird will be arriving in theaters. Directed by Marc Forster, the movie elevates a somewhat predictable story with strong performances and an emotionally resonant tale.

Set in wartime France, White Bird is the moving tale of Sara, a young girl hiding from Nazi occupiers, and Julian, the classmate who protects her. Adapted from R.J. Palacio’s acclaimed graphic novel, director Marc Forster crafts a story that shines light on humanity’s resilience in even our darkest of times.
Much like Palacio’s earlier work Wonder, which explored a boy learning to accept himself despite bullying, White Bird finds the power in treating others with compassion. This time the setting is German-occupied Alsace in 1942, where Jewish teenager Sara must go into hiding after Nazis raid her town. When her friend Julian offers shelter in his family’s barn, an unlikely bond forms that helps Sara and Julian endure the months-long ordeal.
Forster skillfully brings this nuanced story to cinematic life. Newcomers Ariella Glaser and Orlando Schwerdt anchor the film with moving portrayals of Sara and Julian,...

White Bird, the Marc Forster-directed film adaptation of author R. J. Palacio’s sequel/prequel to her worldwide hit book and 2017 movie Wonder, has taken a long and circuitous route to finally getting a North American release. Frustrating as it has been, this is a film that is well worth the wait and perhaps more timely now than ever.
Shot in the Czech Republic in February 2021, White Bird was initially set as a wide release in September 2022, delayed a month to October then taken off Lionsgate’s release schedule entirely before either of those dates came around. It was then scheduled for an August 2023 opening, but last year’s SAG strike meant another delay until it was finally set several months ago for its October 4 release this Friday.

There is a particular scene in White Bird that made me gasp out loud. The scene was not violent; however, watching a teacher insist on chaperoning the Jewish children pulled from her class because they are her responsibility felt like the equivalent of me yelling out during a horror film, “Don’t go in there!”
You cannot argue against how effective White Bird is in terms of engagement. Watching teachers, priests, and neighbors risk, and at times outright sacrifice, themselves to protect Jewish children is compelling, if not heartbreaking. Disturbingly, this has practically become a Hollywood trope.
There are several scenes like the one I described above. Saviors appear on the screen and vanish from sight, never to be seen again. That’s what makes Marc Forster’s White Bird haunting at times—kindness is an enduring theme, but it comes at the cost of one’s life.

White Bird: A Wonder Story tells a heartfelt story against the backdrop of World War II, and there are different options for where to watch the movie. Entering development in 2019, the movie is a prequel and sequel to 2017's hit movie Wonder, starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. White Bird's cast includes bringing back Bryce Gheisar as Julian, a former school bully to Jacob Tremblay's Auggie, as he lives in Paris. White Bird's story is told from the perspective of his grandmother, played by Helen Mirren, as she remembers her childhood as a Jewish girl in World War II.
The release of White Bird comes seven years after Wonder made $315 million, received very positive reviews to get an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and got an Oscar nomination for Makeup and Hairstyling. This was not the original plan, as White Bird was delayed multiple times even though filming was already complete.

Marc Forster has frequently demonstrated an ability to tastefully moderate the more manipulative or saccharine aspects of popular but somewhat blunt-edged source material, in bestseller screen translations like “The Kite Runner” and “A Man Called Otto.” That knack comes in handy once more with “White Bird,” a graceful adaptation of a YA graphic novel by R.J. Palacio. A “Wonder story” tangentially related to 2012’s “Wonder,” it may get some boost from the connection to that book’s successful 2017 film version with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.
This less-starry affair (with brightest luminary Helen Mirren relegated to a glorified cameo) is a period piece mixing the Holocaust and teen romance, likely to appeal to a somewhat narrower audience — albeit one that will broaden in home formats. Though one can quibble over some of the more simplistic story elements here, the director’s astute craftsmanship delivers a handsome result that hits the...

A new trailer for the upcoming war-drama “White Bird”, starring Helen Mirren, has been unveiled, nearly one year after Lionsgate debuted the official trailer.
In the new two-minute clip, Mirren recounts stories from her character’s dark childhood in Nazi-occupied France, including how she fell in love with a boy who was made fun of in school and dubbed a “freak,” in order to teach her grandson a lesson about kindness.

"You forget many things in life, but you never forget kindness." Lionsgate has debuted a brand new 2023 release trailer for the movie White Bird, formerly known as White Bird: A Wonder Story. This is a sort of "spin-off" from the Wonder movie with Jacob Tremblay & Julia Roberts. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, this is a harrowing WWII survival story. The movie is about a boy named Julian who meets his French grandmother; then it goes back in time as Grandmère tells her heartrending story: how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II; how the boy she and her classmates once shunned became her savior and best friend. From Marc Forster (the director of Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin) White Bird, like Wonder before it, is an emotional story about how empathy for others can...

The next story in R.J. Palacio‘s Wonder saga is here, and if this trailer doesn’t move you, are you even human? Palacio’s Wonder inspired millions of readers to “choose kind” over cruelty. Lionsgate’s White Bird trailer reminds audiences to embrace kindness and learn to tolerate others regardless of heredity or station.
Marc Forster directs from Mark Bomback’s screenplay, which is based on the book by R.J. Palacio. In the White Bird trailer, kindness has the power to save lives. The story revolves around Wonder’s Julian Albans (Bryce Gheisar), Auggie’s antagonizing classmate who “left” Beecher Prep. In the film, Julian visits his Grandmère (Helen Mirren) from Paris and becomes transformed by her remarkable and unforgettable story of compassion and courage.

Children of the Corn is a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, this time by Shudder and directed by Kurt Wimmer.
An adaptation shaped for the modern “sensibility” towards King’s novel, which raises philosophical questions about whether “any time in the past was better”.
I have never read such negative reviews about a film.
Movie Review
Could they have saved themselves the effort of making it? The answer is a resounding “yes”. It’s just another horror telefilm and which with this supposed regeneration of the tale – without covering any new ground – loses almost everything quitessential from the novel and destroys everything that the 1984 film had about it that was good.

Surprise! The Children of the Corn remake has been very quietly released in theaters. The reimagining of Stephen King's tale from director Kurt Wimmer was released in just two Florida theaters over the weekend. Depending on how things go, it may be expanded to more locations from there. At the very least, we now have a new poster, as well as an image from the remake.

Lots of films are based on true stories and real people, but Justin Kurzel’s “True History of the Kelly Gang” may be the only one to admit that even movies based on real life can’t be trusted. The first words we see on the screen in Kurzel’s dark epic, which had its world premiere last fall in Toronto, are “nothing you are about to see is true.” All of those words fade away except the last one, which then forms the first word of the movie’s title.
So the word truth, in this instance, will mean whatever we want it to mean. “True History of the Kelly Gang” is a true history, it’s a made-up story, it’s a vivid dramatization of one angle on an unknowable story and it’s a riff on the cultural mythmaking that John Ford explored when a newspaper editor...

Australia's infamous outlaw and folk hero gets a post-modern, punk rock update. True History of the Kelly Gang treads into familiar territory with a fever dream interpretation. Director Justin Kurzel skips a straightforward narrative with a segmented, wildly stylistic and sexualized approach. It's hit or miss, depending on the scene; but certainly creative and unusual. George MacKay is like lightning striking gasoline as Ned Kelly. His adrenalized lead performance fueled by a stellar supporting cast.
Ned Kelly (George MacKay) writes to his unborn child during the gang's murderous crime spree. He wants his story told in his own words. The film flashbacks to his troubled life as a poor twelve-year-old (Orlando Schwerdt) in colonial Victoria. Ned's mother, Ellen (Essie Davis), sold homemade liquor and herself to a stream of British policemen. Sergeant O'Neill (Charlie Hunnam) delights in mocking Ned's father's crossdressing, then being serviced by his mother.

Sometimes, old can be new again. It isn’t always what story being told, but how it’s being told. In the case of True History of the Kelly Gang, filmmaker Justin Kurzel is taking a unique and almost punk rock approach to the classic Ned Kelly legend. It’s a brash and undeniably different way of telling this story. For some, it will be strange and an immediate turn off. For others, it will be the first time that the Kelly tale has truly come alive. Hitting Digital and VOD on Friday, it at least has the distinction of being unlike anything else hitting screens. The film is a look at the legend of the Australian outlaw. Taking place in the English ruled badlands of colonial Australia, where the Irish endure must endure their violent subjugation, Ned Kelly (Orlando Schwerdt as a child and George MacKay as an adult) will come to oppose them.

Australia 1867. The audience is told that nothing they’re about to see is true as a bushranger named Ned Kelly narrates his story. But his account of his story isn’t necessarily the truthful one. Most are familiar with reading a celebrity’s autobiography for the first time and realizing how the subject’s own words often contradict other texts. Events in their lives are glossed over and changed to fit the image they want the world to see of themselves. Their life almost becoming Arthurian, a legend so mixed with fact and fiction that you begin to question if they were even real. Stories can easily be rewritten, and True History of the Kelly Gang plays with this mythicism with dramatic flair.

While he played a noble soldier in “1917,” George MacKay’s latest film “The True History of the Kelly Gang” casts him as a ruthless, murderous outlaw and gang leader with a taste for blood and revenge.
