Mark Ruffalo leads a task force chasing violent home invaders in this new seven-episode crime drama.
Image via HBO Max trailer
I’m still not over “Mare of Easttown” — it has one of the best drunk-acting scenes I’ve ever seen and an ending so shocking I just sat there, disoriented and kind of thrilled. So, when I heard creator Brad Ingelsby was back with a new HBO series, I was all in. “Task” looks like another gritty, emotionally messy crime drama set in suburban Philly, but this time we’ve got Mark Ruffalo leading a task force and Tom Pelphrey pulling off a string of violent home invasions. With a stacked cast, weekly episodes, and a trailer that hints at something deeper than just good guys vs. bad guys, “Task” is already one of my most anticipated shows of the fall. Here’s everything you need to know about “Task.

Apple TV+ seems determined to lead the charge when it comes to intelligent sci-fi storytelling. With shows like Severance and Foundation under their belt, the streaming giant now introduces Murderbot, an adaptation of Martha Wells’ acclaimed The Murderbot Diaries. The show premiered its first two episodes this week and instantly struck a chord with fans of moody androids, space-corporate conspiracies, and high-functioning social anxiety.
Set in a corporate-run galaxy where planets are managed like franchises and private security units are leased like coffee machines, Murderbot introduces us to a SecUnit who has hacked its own governor module—giving it free will. But freedom, it turns out, is complicated. Especially when you’ve committed a massacre in your past and your handlers think you’re just another asset on the books.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the first two episodes and a look into the haunting question that Episode 2 leaves us with.

HBO Max has debuted the first teaser trailer for Mark Ruffalo's new crime drama, Task, and provided a release window. The upcoming TV series comes from Brad Ingelsby, the creator of HBO's hit 2021 miniseries Mare of Easttown, which starred Kate Winslet as the central detective. Now, Task is taking a similar crime-drama angle, with Ruffalo stepping in to play the head of an FBI task force.
The Task teaser trailer was posted today on the official YouTube channel for Max, providing a look at Ruffalo in action as the down-and-out Tom Bradis. The clip sees Ruffalo's character called back to the field to lead a group of under-experienced agents, played by Alison Oliver, Fabien Frankel, and Thuso Mbedu, to put an end to a string of home invasions. HBO gets down in the trenches this Thursday with a trailer for Task, an upcoming crime series from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. The new, hard-boiled preview stars Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey, with Ruffalo playing an FBI agent, saddled with an inexperienced crew hoping to end a string of violent robberies in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
Pelphrey leads the gang of criminals trying to make ends meet in a world where the odds are against them, and the promise of always putting a hot meal on the family table remains in flux. The Task trailer, set to the song “Patience” by Guns N’ Roses, paints a grim picture of Philadelphia living, where resorting to theft is seemingly better than legitimate options to get ahead. Audiences can expect Task to take a hard look at societal issues plaguing everyday Americans, with some themes that could hit close to home.

After teasing subscribers with some first-look images, the streaming platform formerly known as Max decided to unveil the first trailer for its upcoming thriller series Task. The show stars Mark Ruffalo (All The Light We Cannot See) and Tom Pelphrey (Ozark) on opposite sides of the law. Ruffalo's Tom Brandis has to command a task force that needs to investigate and put an end to a series of home invasions led by Pelphrey's Robbie Prendergrast in Pennsylvania. HBO Max also revealed the release window for the series: We can expect to see it this September.
The trailer for Task suggests that it will be a high-stakes kind of thriller and reveals that we will follow the story from two distinct POVs. On one side, we will follow Tom and his team. He's not really happy with the people selected for the task, so chances are that they will have their differences.

HBO has released a trailer for its upcoming series Task, which suggests things won’t end well for at least one of its lead characters.
Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey star in the drama from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. The series is scheduled to premiere in September on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.
Ruffalo plays an FBI agent who’s put in charge of a task force of otherwise fairly inexperienced officers to end a string of violent robberies led by an unassuming family man (Pelphrey). Watch the trailer — soundtracked with “Patience” by Guns n’ Roses — below.

‘Children of Blood and Bone’ is a 2018 romantic fantasy novel by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi. It’s her first book and the start of the ‘Legacy of Orïsha’ trilogy. The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young girl trying to bring magic back to the kingdom of Orïsha after the ruling class, the kosidáns, wiped out the maji, her people who once wielded magic.
Adeyemi spent 18 months and 45 drafts writing the novel, drawing inspiration from books like ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘An Ember in the Ashes,’ West African mythology, and Yoruba culture. She was also influenced by the pain of police violence against Black Americans.
The book was a huge success. It debuted at number one on ‘The New York Times’ Best Seller list for young adult books and received praise for tackling themes like oppression, racism, and slavery. It’s also a coming-of-age tale about young people finding the power to make change.

The following contains spoilers for Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2, now streaming on Netflix.
As Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 unfolds, the story smartly shifts away from Richter Belmont. It's not that he isn't a focal point, but many characters felt peripheral and under-serviced in Season 1. This change allows more time for his grandfather, Juste, to be fleshed out as a warrior seeking to rekindle his magic, for example.
Another character who was unfairly sidelined in Season 1 was Annette (Thuso Mbedu). She was treated as a supporting character who powered up with her magic and help Richter in times of need. That was just the tip of the iceberg with her, though. The Netflix anime was awfully light on her most crucial trait: her culture. It was disappointing as it was set up to be a nuanced and crucial arc in her development. Thankfully, this new season makes amends and dives deep into Annette's tribe and their spirituality.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Castlevania: Nocturne. With an epic battle between the forces of good and evil, the return of beloved characters, and the introduction of new threats, there is a lot going on in Castlevania: Nocturne's second season, but between the dramatic moments, there are several emotional storylines. Olrox (Zahn McClarnon) and Mizrak (Aaron Neil) deal with relationship issues, Maria (Pixie Davies) reacts to her mother becoming a vampire, and Richter (Edward Bluemel) and Annette (Thuso Mbedu) realize they have feelings for each other. But one of the most emotional stories quietly went to the jaded Juste Belmont (Iain Glen). When the character was introduced in Season 1, he was a grumpy old man who couldn't use his magic and was too closed off to be there for his orphaned grandson. However, by the end of Season 2, Juste has changed by coming to terms...

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2.Castlevania: Nocturne's second season launches straight into the building confrontation, continuing the story of Erzsebet Báthory's (Franka Potente) growing power, Alucard's (Richard Dormer) arrival, and Richter (Edward Bluemel), Annette (Thuso Mbedu), and Maria's (Pixie Davies) efforts to stop her. Yet, a few elements not from Season 1 play a role in the story, and the most mysterious addition is the silent and frightening Mephistopheles. In truth, the shadowy figure does little in the plot, but he contributes a level of creepiness to every scene he is in. Always appearing near death, Mephistopheles has many names. While Olrox (Zahn McClarnon), who sees him the most, refers to him as Old Man Coyote, Mizrak (Aaron Neil) calls him a devil, but whatever he is called, he seems dangerous.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Castlevania: Nocturne.Castlevania: Nocturne's second season resolved much of the show's story. Beginning minutes after Season 1's conclusion the new episodes explore the heroes' next steps as Alucard (James Callis), Ritcher (Edward Bluemel), and Annette (Thuso Mbedu) look for a way to stop Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente) and Drolta (Elarica Johnson) from uniting Sekhmet's soul and Maria (Pixie Davies) faces the darkness within herself. While humanity was saved again in the last episode of Netflix's Castlevania: Nocturne, it still left plenty of key pieces of setup for Season 3.
The latest season of the Castlevania sequel series, Nocturne, came to an explosive end with the defeat of Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente), the self-declared Vampire Messiah, and her loyal servant, Drolta (Elarica Johnson).
However, that doesn't mean that the adventure is over for Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel), Maria Renard (Pixie Davies), and Annette (Thuso Mbedu). The season concluded with both groups splitting up, potentially leaving them vulnerable to new dangers.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2.The second season of Castlevania: Nocturne, the sequel to Netflix's original Castlevania series, concludes with its heroes successfully defeating Countess Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente), a self-proclaimed Vampire Messiah intent upon plunging the world into eternal darkness. To call the conflict a hard-won victory is an understatement, especially since Nocturne's protagonists couldn't have triumphed without special intervention. Thanks to Annette (Thuso Mbedu), the soul of Sekhmet (Nicola F. Delgado), the ancient goddess whose powers the tyrannical Erzsebet intends to inherit, returns to the mortal realm long enough to thwart Erzsebet. But why is Sekhmet such an integral part of Erzsebet's bloodthirsty plans?...

Picking up where Season 1 left off, Maria is in a bad place after her father, the Abbot (Richard Dormer), tried to sacrifice her to the vampires only for her mother, Tera (Nastassja Kinski), to take her place, getting turned into a vampire herself. This tragedy sets Maria on a dark path. In Season 1, she was a young vampire hunter and revolutionary, and she still is that. However, Season 2 shows her struggling with a darkness that can be seen in her powers.

Mufasa: The Lion King is continuing to roar its way to success. The latest Lion King movie has thrived in a slow January, competing against a small field consisting of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and several other new releases. Wolf Man and One of Them Days were poised to top the box office over the holiday weekend. Even with Martin Luther King Day offering a chance for a booming box office, it has been a slow week. Still, despite only a trickle at the box office, Disney's lions are thriving.
According to a report by Variety, the Lion King prequel is expected to end the weekend with $209.8 million domestically and $588.4 million worldwide. With that total, it has officially become the 10th 2024 movie to reach the $200 million milestone domestically. It sits ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which earned $196 million, and just behind Sonic 3's $218 million total.

"Castlevania: Nocturne" season 2 sets up a lot of interesting threads for a potential season 3 and wraps up most of the big arcs from season 1. At the same time, the show hasn't fully answered one of its biggest mysteries, which has to do with the new kind of night creatures created by Abbott Emmanuel (Richard Dormer).
In the original "Castlevania" series, night creatures are created by devil forgemasters, human sorcerers who use a specific breed of dark magic to channel souls from hell into dead bodies, transforming them into monstrous creatures. These forgemasters each channel their spells through a specific, unique tool, and the monsters they create are loyal to them. In most cases, the souls channeled into the night creatures don't seem to be the same ones that the bodies housed in life, but there are some apparent exceptions to that rule. In general, though, night creatures are shown to be pretty mindless.
